There’s something to be said about Québécois and their cleverness. On an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, Quebec was hailed as a gourmand’s Mecca-a place where the general population knew how to live well. It’s all about family, fine dining, and art. It should come as no surprise then that an upsurge in graphic artists turned children’s authors has also emerged there. The results have been witty tongue-in-cheek books with amazing illustrations.

Dubuc is an award-winning children’s book author and illustrator. This parcel of goodness is about a mouse who delivers mail to all his neighbors. I won’t give away which animal homes he visits, but a hint you’ll appreciate is that some of them are mythical creatures. At each home Dubuc illustrates the interior of the home like a diagram or ant farm. I know as a child I loved imagining what insect habitats were like, so I know this would have appealed to the five-year old me. This seems like a suitable nighttime read, although Henry and I were laid out after a heavy lunch and this book for company. Highly recommend with a glass of milk and a digestive biscuit...or three.

Mr. Postmouse has a long day ahead of him. He gets to deliver all manner of deliveries to all sorts of animals.

I applaud the illustrator for all the small details. My boys 5&7 had a lot of fun searching for and discovering all the fun little items found on each page. They especially liked the rabbit burrow's bathroom...they are boys after all.
burrow

Each imaginative creation of each animal's home was fun to inspect: Bear, rabbits, birds, snakes, squirrels, dragon, mole, ants, turtle, crocodiles, octopus, flies in a dungheap (yeah, kiddos liked that one too), Big Bad Wolf (robbery by the Three Pigs in progress in the background), bats, penguins, friendly Yeti, mountain goats, skunks, a chicken coop with a suspicious package delivery, and finally, a very special delivery.

This would definitely be one to buy for a special child.

Thank you Kids Can Press and Netgalley for a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Mr. Postmouse's rounds take him to a variety of animal residences, and through a variety of climates, but our intrepid murine hero lets nothing stand in the way of delivering the letters and parcels entrusted to his care. Whether it be a delivery of nuts for Mr. Squirrel or a worrying package for the hens, Mr. Postmouse always comes through...

Originally published in French as La tournée de facteur souris, this delightful picture-book from French-Canadian author/illustrator Marianne Dubuc has a simple enough text, and wonderfully detailed illustrations. Quite a bit of the enjoyment offered by the book comes from perusing those illustrations, and observing the many different homes, with their diverse layouts and structures. There are plenty of humorous visual details - the fact that the packages delivered to the hens is clearly a fox in disguise, for instance - to keep the reader entertained and engaged. Recommended to anyone looking for fun picture-books featuring animal characters and/or postal deliveries.

Having first discovered Dubuc with the most wonderful The Lion and the Bird, I was pleased to find more of her work in the guise of a pair of picturebooks which follow the story of Mr. Postmouse. Known for building her narratives from the images that she sees in her head rather than having any sort of written story, Mr. Postmouse’s tale is one in which he drops off post and parcels for a range of animals ranging from a thieving magpie to a friendly dragon.

Dubuc’s story has been compared to the work of Richard Scarry and I can see the connection in how the reader is invited to look closely at all the other smaller narratives woven throughout but there is something quirky, warm and tongue-in-cheek that makes it feel different. I particularly loved the cut-away sections of the creature’s homes; those little glimpses into their lives. For me, it contains the same warmth as the Ahlberg’s Jolly Postman books but, perhaps, is a little more light and frivolous in its telling. Whatever the case, I’m going to be buying anything she puts her hands to.

Shortly, Mr. Postmouse is going to be delivering the mail to every animal around the block (so to speak).
Look closely when he delivers to the Rabbit household --- my co-worker and I were not able to contain our laughter!
Marianne has done a marvelous job at illustrating animal "habitats" even if they are in conventional human homes.
Thanks to whomever suggested this author to me!

Charming picture book which follows Mr. Postmouse as he delivers mail to various animal friends at their (often wildly elaborate) homes. The story is simple, but the illustrations are very detailed and clever. If the reader looks closely, they'll have some laughs and learn some secrets about the denizens of this neighborhood. With the animal friends and the bright, cheerful colors, this book is reminiscent of a less-intense, rural version of Richard Scarry's Busytown classics. Recommended for children who like to pore over pictures to find hidden stories that go beyond the text.

Knihu Pošťák Myšák doručuje by sme mohli zaradiť k obrázkovo-hľadacím knihám.
A horná hranica?

A book about Mr Postmouse's delivery round throughout the locality...seems a simple book but this is so much more! The illustrations aid to create a whole new world that the reader is readily encompassed in when given the tome to read and engage with this.

Personally, I found the narrative alone simple, and if you are someone that only reads a picture book this is definitely going to mean you miss 90% of the text. The illustrations here are the absolute highlight and they make the story witty and enjoyable for a range of ages. Each illustration carries so much more than the couple of sentence of texts accompanied by it and children will enjoy unravelling the stories of each character that Mr Postmouse meets- and children could be easily engaged with making a story for each of the characters afterwards.

A really valuable picture book to communicate the message that there are differences between picture books and picturebooks. Everyone needs to take the time to read and digest every page of this book, to truly understand its worth.

The illustrations within this text are definitely the highlight. All those there is text within the book, I would say it could be more useful and equally weighted with the engagement of the illustrations if there was more substance to it.

Think of all the positive children’s book descriptors you can and they probably apply to this book! The story is relatively simple and charming but the illustrations are phenomenal- so detailed and beautiful giving glimpses into the homes of all the creatures to whom Mr Postmouse delivers the mail. It is fascinating to look at all the hidden, unexpected, yet appropriately quirky features in each home and the pictures enthral children sharing the book. It is the sort of book where you read the text then spend ages sharing, laughing and pointing out different things spotted on each page.

In class this is the sort of book that children will love to keep exploring for the fine detail in the illustrations. It could easily be used as a stimulus for children to design similar homes for other creatures or to write descriptions of the homes as if they were being put up for sale. Definitely a book I’d have loved to share with my daughter when she was younger and one I’d love to use with children in school. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

Mr. Postmouse's Rounds is a charming story with creative, detailed, and humorous illustrations. It follows Mr. Postmouse's mail delivery through his diverse community of animal (and fantastical) friends. As he drops off parcels at each creature's dwelling, he encounters a moment in their lives at home that readers can relate to, such as: Father Bunny preparing a meal for his children; a homing pigeon planning a vacation; Mrs. Alligator sitting down to a good book and snack; mountain goats playing a game of catch, etc. Author/Illustrator Marianne Dubuc does a wonderful job of depicting each animal in his/her own unique domicile above ground, underground, and even underwater. As he wraps up his busy day of deliveries, Mr. Postmouse heads home to bring a very important package for his little mouse's birthday. An entertaining story about how we rely and work with one another in our community. Also, if you like Richard's Scarry's books, you will love Mr. Postmouse's Rounds! This book is wonderful! Mr. Postmouse loads up his wagon and his rounds begin. There's not too much text, but all the magic is in the illustrations, beautiful and full of details (and jokes) to discover. Each page is an amazing opportunity to take a look at the inside of different type of homes, burrows, some under the ground, on trees, or underwater, on the top of the hill, inside the hive and the anthill, and many more.

Dubuc is certainly a skillful illustrator. It's evident in each picture all the care and thought that was put there. All and every page is worth a good few minutes to enjoy, look, laugh, comment and touch it. It's not a book to read alone, but to share.

I highly recommend you to follow Mr. Postmouse in his rounds!

Oh man! I need this book! For me! It is divine! I love love love the illustrations and it reminds me of the Richard Scarry books I read as a child which I adored and read and read and read.

This book has illustrations that are highly appealing. Quite simple in execution but so detailed also. Even the trees have hundreds of individual leaves! One could spend hours looking at each page and I love that about these illustrations!

Overall, I am rating this one a five because I WANT this on my bookshelf permanently. I don't even care whether my children like it or not. I would buy it solely for myself!

(Sure you could use it as an educator too for more serious stuff).
