Lost and Found #3

Inbetweeners

Rate this book
An angel and a demon walk into a bar… It should be the start of a joke except Emmett and Phoenix loathe each other the moment they meet. Reluctant and mismatched partners they may be, but they’ve been given a job to do on Earth: persuade the newly dead to move on to the next world.

A friendly word here, a nudge there, all the dead should need is a push in the right direction—but unknown dark forces are working against the pair, and the mission takes a dangerous turn.

From hate at first sight, to toleration, to something more… The clock is ticking. Time is running out and soon Emmett and Phoenix will be torn apart and returned to the worlds they came from. Though neither is willing to go back without a fight…

…. Because being dead has never felt more alive.

Barbara Elsborg

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

I've given up trying to predict this series. I think I might have an idea, but as soon as the pages slip by, I'm proven wrong. Barb always keeps me on my toes and I love it! At first, we bounce between heaven and hell. I always enjoy different perspectives of the afterlife. Emmett and Phoenix take us on a memorable tour of their life after death. Emmett is an angel and despite living beyond the pearly gates, he's miserable and bored. And let's not forget grumpy. He surrendered his memories when he died but of course, he doesn't remember why. His life must have been dreadful. But then we visit Phoenix down below and it's every terror you could possibly imagine. He is also miserable, with good reasons to be. When they are approached with a proposition for a temporary escape from their fate, they can't agree quickly enough. Returning to Earth is a rare gift and both plan to make the most of it. That is until they meet each other. They couldn't be more different and loathe one another on sight. How in the world are they supposed to work together when they can't even look at each other without wanting to throat-punch someone (Nix) or put in earplugs (Emmett)? It doesn't take long till they both realize, neither man is who they first appear to be. This time, first impressions are false impressions. They both have hidden secrets and painful pasts. Slipping into bed together is insane. And peeling back the covers turns into more than they dared imagine.

Things may seem random in the beginning but let me tell you, they are not. Elsborg delivers a curious tale with humor and heart. I was instantly captivated and thought I knew where we were headed, only to discover it was a mirage shimmering ahead. Emmett and Phoenix are under assignment, working for Paranormal Resolutions. Tar is back with a few familiar faces. I can't wait to unravel more clues about his eclectic crew. The purpose of PR is to maintain order in a chaotic world. They control the out-of-control supernatural creatures. Someone is trying to catch souls and collect them. They snatch them while they are in between life and death and sort of hold onto them. No one knows why. Or for what purpose. Our dynamic duo of good and evil is tasked with finding them and stopping them. They might be 'living' again, but they can also die again. They are told to fly under the radar, avoid the papers and the police. With very few clues and lots of questions, their assignment isn't going to be easy. However, the hardest part is working together. Then their animosity turns to attraction. Suddenly, hate melts away, and what's left shocks them both.

The rescue mission of the inbetweeners is the main focus, but there's so much more than that. Bad boy plus good boy. Enemies to lovers. Regret and forgiveness. Love and respect. The ultimate sacrifice. Second chances. Gruesome death. Carnal sex and unexpected romance. Give and take. And I could go on and on, but it'll be more fun for you to pull back some of the covers yourself!

Beware of: A cursory glance would be deceiving. Patience is key. And expect the unexpected.

This book is for: f you're looking for something off the beaten path, Emmett and Nix would be more than happy to show you a wild ride. Take the bike Nix, and show them a good time!

Inbetweeners, the third book in Barbara Elsborg’s incredible new Lost and Found series, is out now. Taking place in the same universe as Double Trouble and What If?, you can read any of these novels as standalones.

All three of these stories have a completely unique feel to them. Other than being centered around the goings on of paranormal characters in modern day London, each book has its own flavor. Inbetweeners is smart and sassy, with clever banter and tons of spicy romance.

It’s an inspired idea, forcing an angel and a demon to work together… and Emmett and Phoenix are polar opposites. By making them share a one bedroom apartment, and spend every moment together, the sexual tension is practically leaping off the page!

Emmet and Phoenix have a limited amount of time on Earth, and the pacing in this story is super fast. With non-stop action, unpredictable twists and turns, and surprises around every corner, I found Inbetweeners completely un-put-downable.

Barbara Elsborg has an absolutely amazing imagination, and I’m pretty much speechless right now lol. Seriously, if you haven’t delved into the Lost and Found series, or explored any of Ms. Elsborg’s phenomenal paranormal romances, get started. Right. The Heck. Now.!

Emmett is so bored in Heaven. Heaven is a dull boring place, no fun nothing, everyone was so happy peppy, and that forever and ever, ugh.
Emmett is a lucky angel he gets the chance to go back to earth and work together with someone named Phoenix.

Phoenix didn’t meet one reasonable soul in Hell, not one, there are only liars and cheaters. (Duh)
Going back to earth for a job seems the best idea.
So here they are, back to earth, with a mission from Hell and Heaven, they have to work together.
The Angel and the Demon have to find out why and who let souls hang on their way to Heaven or Hell.
Working together on it seems, at first sight, a piece of cake, but don’t forget they can’t stand each other.

So, so much fun, it was everything!!

To review this narrative without spoiling is a task, I have to keep it vague. Well, I have to give you something, don’t I?
Maybe I should tell about some funny things, how they hate each other, or maybe about they can talk to dead people, or about the hilarious humour, or the gore, or how desperately Nix wants to be close to Emmett but instead making him mad because he can’t show he’s vulnerable, or maybe about Emmett’s nonexisting memory, or about the whole alphabet of insulting names they call each other and secretly hurt by them, or the hurt they’ve been through on earth, or maybe about the fact now they are back on earth it made them insightful about their past behavior, or about the delicious hate / not hate sex. Nah I won’t tell about those things, LOL. Oh, and certainly not about Cat or Harry, their adorable, endearing sidekick.

The plot was ingenious and from the highest level. I love this author’s mind. When you are familiar with this author’s storytelling, you know you will get a pearl in your hand, and omg, it was a beautiful shining pearl.
Every step, every turn in this book was unpredictable and unexpected, it was a delight for me as a reader.
The author has an amazing way of constructing a story on solid pilers. Captivating af!!
To be honest, I couldn’t find a negative thing to say about this narrative, I enjoyed it immensely, it was consistently good, the humour was tremendously good. The conclusion was epic.

DNF @ 21% so no rating. I didn't think there could be too much banter and dialogue, I was wrong. I need more than this, especially in PNR where worldbuilding is essential.

Elsborg wrote a clever and unique story! A bored angel and a tortured demon assigned a confusing, dangerous task back on earth. Two fascinating, relatable characters at first at odds, then working together to solve a paranormal mystery. Slow burn and worth waiting for. This is the first book I’ve read in the Lost and Found series. I’ll probably pick up the others in the near future.

I discovered Barbara's writing with Jonty (aaahh!!!!) and I've not looked back, having devoured that entire series in about a week.
Lost and Found #3 is opposites attract (possibly my favourite trope), enemies to lovers, good versus bad, set in a unique world. Goodness, we worked hard for our HEA but what a lovely journey. I rarely read PNR and I confess I hadn't read books 1 and 2 in this series but I'm heading back to book 1 tonight!
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

That was wonderful! Well, not the things they each went through before they died, and some of the things that happened when they were working were rather rough, but that ending? Perfect. Emmett is absolutely lovely deep down and Nix is just the right kind of arse to pair with him. I can hardly stand it that the next book is Tar's story.

This was great fun and the whole time I was trying to figure out what was going to happen next. I was biting my nails wondering how all it would end. Although I wish the sex scenes were spicier, they were real and that's sweet.

If you know Barbara Elsborg's writing you know what to expect, great banter and twisted storylines...
So yes, you will not be disappointed with this story of an angel and a demon combo in the starring roles.

I did not expect the good cop/bad cop routine and the Ground Hog Day kinda vibe to the story, it kept me wanting more. I could not work out how she could possibly bring together the story without a tragedy. Silly me.

We have Emmett, an angel who is depressed and bored out of his mind in Heaven ( whaat !) and Phoenix, a demon who is living a life of constant torture in the bowels of Hell (shivers), two totally opposite beings. They are brought back to Earth to help the Paranormal Investigations Agency with a series of gruesome deaths.

Expect fireworks of every kind !
Non stop name calling, constant put downs, aggression and so much hot sexual chemistry. But the more the story unravels and their connections to their previous lives come to light the more their forgiveness and loyalty will surprise you.

Another very enjoyable story, with many great side characters to love.

Angels and demons, enemies to lovers, hurt comfort and a lovely HEA
One of the things I love most about Barbara Elsborg’s books is the depth of her character development. Her characters are rich with histories that inform their present actions and guide their future. In her book Inbetweeners we meet two men who couldn’t be more different—at least on the surface. An angel and demon are brought together to help the newly dead make that final journey to whichever realm they belonged—heaven or hell—because something is preventing those souls from moving on. Emmett, an angel who finds heaven boring, has no memory of his life before he died—by his own choice. Nix, demon who knows why he is in hell, remembers all too well what he did to get himself there. The pair can’t stand each at first because—well, angel and demon. Over time, though, they come to find they aren’t as different as they first thought. As they become closer and their mission becomes more dangerous, they each learn what’s really important in life—and death—and discover that it’s each other. I highly recommend this lovely, wonderful book. I received an ARC from the author for an honest review, but I liked it so much, I bought a copy anyway. Read and enjoy.

The cover! 🧡💛💚💙💜❤️

Even though the ending is somewhat predictable, I was still not quite sure of the conclusion until almost the very end. It could have gone many ways and I love that.

The only thing I am still confused about is the soul kidnapping business. Maybe I skipped a page or two somewhere? It was explained, don't get me wrong, but it didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Anyway, 4.5 stars. Moving onto the Tar installment. YAY! 😀

Barbara Elsborg writes stories that will glue you to the book, making it so hard to stop reading. You will experience such a wide range of emotions, it will strike you hard in the area of your feelings, sway you off your feet, made you abandon your daily life, immerse you in the incredible, fantastic Universe.
I read this book in one go, it was impossible to put down.
Nix and Emmett- both had very traumatic experiences in their childhood, things that happened to them really made me cry and rage against their abusers. And even after death they still can't find peace, then get thrown together into a wild, scary, dangerous game of chase. They meet, instantly dislike each other, but their verbal sparring already has a lot of steam. Nix is sarcastic, abrasive, and gorgeous and that makes him a dangerous adversary to Emmett's high-buttoned and prissy attitude. They have to learn to coexist together to achieve their goal, they will have to be very careful with the lives they were given, which when used up will end the game, which is hard and treacherous. Plus they would have to deal with the memories of the past and unknown future.
A lot of what happened in the book will make you hold your breath, but there are a lot of sweet, tender moments too, both between the characters and other people, they will meet during their journey. Harry was my favorite sidekick and I wished so much that this sweet boy will get his HEA.
It is a mystery/enemies to lovers/fantasy/crime/eternal beings book, that ends happily for our characters. It s a part of a series but can be read as a standalone. I can't wait to read the next installment, and I know that Barbara will never disappoint!

An angel and a demon walk into a bar... Yes, sounds like the beginning of a joke, only neither Emmett nor Phoenix fit the image one might have of angels and demons. Emmett is grumpy and cynical, while Phoenix is sunshine and mischief incarnate. The most unlikely partners, given a mission they weren't prepared for...a mission with an outcome neither would have dreamed of.

This was beyond brilliant! It was different, refreshing and amazingly written. I loved the storyline, the balance between romance, comedy, heartbreak, action and paranormal was just about perfect. And trust Barbara Elsborg to write two immensely compelling protagonists and to slowly unpeeled layers upon layers of their personalities all through the book.

The story was perfectly paced, tension and danger slowly building up. Emmett and Phoenix improvised themselves detectives, painful pasts revealed and feelings steadily growing between them. They were delightful together, snarky, sweet and sexy. The strengthening intimacy and trust between lightened up the story, while there was an escalation in ghostly activities and a malevolent presence became increasingly dangerous. The ghost part of the plotline was fascinating. The lost souls made my heart hurt and some of them were so adorable that I wanted their own stories.

There's everything to love about Inbetweeners. Two main characters that will steal your heart, topnotch humor and snark, a heart-melting romance and a gripping storyline. I laughed so much my face hurt, I cried with heartbreak but I also found so much joy. I loved it and I can't recommend it enough!

What a bizarre read that was! I’m not really one for reading paranormal type books because I can’t take them seriously but with this book, it’s meant not to be taken seriously. Well apart from the serious bits, and then they should be taken seriously, like the message about making the best of every day and that malteasers are the most amazing chocolates ever invented.

“Your life is memories. I mean that’s what it’s all about. You build on them, you cling to the ones that make you happy and you learn to get over the ones that don’t.”

“Haven’t we learnt that lesson? You never know what life is going to throw at you. Every day that you wake up is a gift. If we’ve been given one day to watch the sun rise and set, then we take it.”

Emmett Briscoe is dead. He had an uneventful life, did his best although he got the short stick when it came to parents, and now he’s in heaven. He chose to forget everything about his life and heaven is as dull as ditch water.

Phoenix aka Nix Harding is dead. He also had the short stick when it comes to parents, and now he’s in hell. It really is hell and the other demons are demons.

Nix and Emmett are chosen to do a job which means them returning to earth. Each will have nine lives but when the final life is lost they will go back to heaven and hell.

I giggled along with their antics as they moved from a loathing of each other to being everything good in each other’s lives (or deaths). Poor Emmett loses lives like an eight year old loses teeth, another one gone and another one gone. Being be-headed was a bit spectacular as far as deaths go and thank god, Nix put his head back on the right way around.

I loved the silly banter between them and I absolutely agree that Twix is the worst chocolate. How can it even be called chocolate? It’s more biscuit than chocolate and don’t get me started on kitkats. But malteasers are the king of chocolates. Is there anything they can’t cure? Except having your head chopped off.

Proper loved it.

I feel like a broken record every time I write a review after reading BE's book.
BE is an amazing author!! She writes it, I'll read it! Her imagination is nothing short of amazing!

Emmett and Phoenix are as opposite as you can get.
Emmett has been in Heaven for one year. He has been selected to return to Earth for one job only for the Paranormal Resolutions, after which he will return to his fluffing dull existence.
Phoenix has been in Hell for one year. He too has been selected to return to Earth for one job only for the Paranormal Resolutions, after which he will return to his torturous existence.

Inbetweeners is a very well written, low angst story with perfectly flawed and complex MCs. There's loads of banter, name calling and s3xual tension. The MCs are so easy to love and route for. My heart ached for them at times, all the while smiling at their victories.
I particularly loved their accidental sidekick, Harry. His well timed comic relief was endearing.

Although this is the 3rd book in BE's Lost and Found series, it can definitely be read as a standalone.

The angel bored out of his mind in heaven and a demon horribly tortured in hell are brought back to earth to work together on a task that seems simple enough - lead the souls of the recently deceased that didn't pass on their own to where they belong. Sounds simple enough, but the plot thickens quickly and there's much more to this task than they imagined. They are flying blind with little or no guidance. On the top of it they hate each other on the first sight. They couldn't be more different but the chemistry between them is undeniable. Phoenix brings the true Emmett out more and more as the story progresses, without even knowing, it and Emmett gets to meet the side of himself that he even didn't know existed. Can they complete this task and if they do what happens next? It seems they are doomed and I was really curious how can there possibly be a HEA. Courios, but not particularly worried because it's Barbara Elsborg we're talking about! Plot is original and unique and character development is great, not to mention the banter which is hilarious. I adored Henry and I can't wait to read Tar's story.

Inbetweeners is a third book in Lost and Found, MM Romance. PNR / Fantasy. Angels, Demons, Ghosts, Enemies-to-Lovers, Opposites attract. HEA. Can be read as a standalone.

2POV, 3rd person, past tense. This kindle edition 392 pages, 20th January 2022.

Emmett's and Nix's story is a real rollercoaster ride. It was exiting and fun. They've a mystery to unsolve and themselves to get out of the trouble they're in too, besides. While it's all happening they've no clue at all if their own fate is ever gonna get any better. Still they do their best. The dialogue is great and fast-paced. The story is pretty fast-paced and lots of action, it's not dull. The characters aren't any kind of picture perfect, they've their flaws and pasts and present ast well. I really hoped for a happy ending for these two and I got it. Enjoyable.

Really enjoyed this love/hate dynamic between the angel and the demon.

Knew it would (probably) turn out alright, but the author makes us believe it might not. That's a clever skill in a romance novel. I hope we see more of this lost and found crew.

Waaaaaay too much inner dialogue. There are pages full of just inner dialogue and barely any action happening. I liked Nix's character, but if I skipped the inner monologue then the action started to not make sense :(

Can you get any more opposite than an angel and a demon?
Angel Emmett and a Demon Phoenix are just that opposite yet have to work together for the greater good.
As they do so they begin to see beyond the surface and truly get to know who the other really is.
Of course this brings all kinds of feelings out. Now the tricky part....how to turn those feelings into something real and true.
All while working to save mankind!
I loved the dynamics and chemistry between these two guys.
The snark is top notch here and so enjoyable.
The story will keep you turning page after page.
What a great addition to the Lost and Found series.

Great banter, engaging and unique storylines, and wonderful characters. The Inbetweeners has all of that and more! The angel and demon combination works wonderfully in this story, mostly because Emmett and Phoenix have such terrific chemistry. Their dynamic is intense as they go from hate at first sight, to reluctant partners who love tormenting one another, and finally, to something much deeper. There’s a bit of heartbreak, a lot of humour, and and plenty of twists and turns that kept me hooked.

I love any book by Barbara Elsborg but this one might be my favourite.
Emmett and phoenix are wonderful main characters, so funny and flawed but perfect together. The story is really imaginative and has an interesting take on angels and demons. I also love murder mysteries along with romance and this book didn't disappoint on both counts. This can be read as a stand alone although the series is so good I would highly recommend checking the previous books out. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

WOW Barbara has done it again, i just love her writing, she blows me away time and time again with her storytelling. Barbara's story's are so original that she never ceases to amaze me.

This was good v evil with a Angel Emmett and a Demon Phoenix, total opposites that hated each other on sight but had to work together and to complete there mission in transferring souls on to the next life. This had it all from complex characters to humour and banter with lives lost to the hea that i wasn't sure this was ever going to get to.

There were plenty of twists between these two characters as they were bound together by there pasts, this was a gripping story line that will keep you turning the pages until the hea that was truly deserved.

I really enjoyed this book. I have read the others in the series but it definitely isn't necessary to have read them.
Just a warning, the first chapter is really slow, this is definitely on purpose, to show the characters feelings, but I found it a bit of a slog to get through. However the action picks up chapter 2 and continues on from there and I read the rest really fast wanting to know how it would end!
I really love the way Barbara develops characters and can show how two people who might seem to have little in common can come together. As well as that she writes interesting lives for them too so you are never bored. I love the concept of angels and demons together and what makes some people worthy of heaven or unworthy as it may be. Highly recommend
