A failed rebellion. An ancient black mountain. For Finn Oreah’anza, his walkabout may lead him to his death…or to the salvation of an entire world.
Solace, Outback Australia, is home to all kinds of supernatural creatures, but none as mysterious and alluring as the fae. Finn Oreah’anza is the last of his people to stand with the Exiles against the lingering threat of total annihilation, but his own past hangs heavy on his shoulders. The truth of his exile, and the dark secrets he’s kept hidden for his entire life, may destroy the world he now calls home… unless he can find his way to absolution. Finn knows the sacrifices he’s made to protect Solace’s seal aren’t enough to atone for evil deeds done in the name of a failed rebellion. His only hope is to embark on a spiritual walkabout through time and space, knowing it might mean his death if he fails to find the end of the path—if he can find it at all. When the storm clears, will he discover the dawn…or the last twilight of an entire world?

2022 bk 50. Argh - Vera's police officer beau is back and this time, Vera and the town are holding nothing back. Watching him chart his way through the knowledge that his mind had been manipulated in the past, that witches, vampires, the fae, and other paranormal beings are real provides light moments in a very heavy story. The focus is mostly on Finn, the Fae, and how his past interacts with the present. There are moments when you want to weep for him or at least give him a hug. And now I have to wait. The 5th book is ready in Kindle, but I have the other 4 in paperback and that is how I want to read this series.
Hardy’s vampire friend has left, relieved now that their creator has been destroyed. Eloise and Kyne are happily settled in their new home. But it’s time for the seasonal opal miners to arrive worrying Eloise about the town’s secret. The other fae have decided to move on leaving Finn there alone. Then an unnatural thunderstorm hits that distorts the magical energies of the area and damages the seal.
Fave scenes: Andante taking care of the dust, Finn finding & helping Kyne, visiting Andante and Finn fighting the shadows.
Solace and the supernaturals, plus Blue the human, have even more danger to face on more than one level. So far each of the Solace inhabitants have had to face the pain and regrets they carry and Eloise is working on gaining control of her powers. On top of battles there’s love deepening of all kinds. Only one more book to go. I’ll really miss this journey!
This is the most ‘Australian’ story I’ve read. It puts a new spin on the Dreamtime and links it to more usual fantasy in a creative way. The outback is alive with good and evil.
