I wanted to love this because I miss the dystopian craze & we need more translated works, but I honestly only finished it because it was so STRANGE. It felt like this was written on the fly and nothing was planned beforehand. So much did not make sense. LOTS of telling not showing. Don't even get me started on the random fantasy portal mirror thing.

Snow globe est un roman qui mélange plusieurs genre la distopie ( la terre vit une période glaciaire) le policier ( qu’est-il arrivé à Haori) la science fiction. J’ai trouvé que c’est un livre plaisant à lire, il s’adresse à un public jeune. La seule chose qui m’a un peu dérangé c’est une fin que j’ai jugée un peu brouillonne. Je pense que c’est un livre qui peut plaire à nos ados.

January 13, 2024Sometimes, what you want is an injection of pure, undiluted story and plot. This YA debut delivers that in spades. Set two hundred years from now, we’ve got an impoverished teenage girl, Chobahm, living a hand-to-mouth existence in a Korea (I assume it’s Korea) undergoing an endless winter (it’s 50 below freezing every day). With her twin brother and mother, she works at the local power plant producing electricity for the village and Snowglobe, the climate-controlled city run by a media conglomerate – the Yinbon family — where all TV shows are made. To live in Snowglobe, you have either to be an “actor” or a “director”, and our protagonist is desperate to become a director. It just so happens that Chobham is a spitting image of Go Haeri, the star of the most popular TV show produced by the Globe. When Haeri takes her own life (off camera), Chobham is approached by the show’s Director – the not very nice Director Cha – to take on the role of a lifetime. Broadly, this is a novel about the haves and the have-nots and how power in too few individuals is a corrupting force. But really, it’s a propulsive narrative filled with coincidences, devious acts, betrayals, cliffhangers and magical mirrors (that are never explained). I mean, yeah, you could argue that the heightened nature of the plot is a meta-commentary on the artifice of reality TV. Or you could embrace the frothy silliness of it all, the shocking reveals, the amped up stakes. Which is what I did. Snowglobe is the first in a duology, and I’ll definitely be reading the sequel.

Snowglobe is Joungmin Lee Comfort's translation of 스노볼 by 박소영 (Soyoung Park), the first of a duology with the 2nd part to follow in English next year.
The story is set in a future world post catastrophic climate change - with temperatures massively sub-zero - and post various wars. Most of humanity lives in these treacherous conditions, their main job to produce power on human treadmills. Some of the power is used to keep their houses warm enough to survive, but some is diverted to Snowglobe, a climate-controlled environment for the priviliged few. But in turn the lives of those in Snowglobe form a reality TV show for those outside.
About Snowglobe. With the world now at an average annual temperature of -50°F, Snowglobe is the only place with a temperate climate—the only location with warmth and color—in the whole world. It's a special settlement that was built atop a geothermal vent and is enclosed in a gigantic weatherproof glass dome. But not just anyone can live there. Our narrator Chobahm lives outside the globe, but idolises one of the most famous 'actresses' in Snowglobe, Goh Haeri, who is the same age and even looks like her. Her dream is to become a 'director' in Snowglobe, but then one of the most famous directors of all makes her an unusual offer - Goh Haeri has died, and she is offered the chance to pretend to be her to keep her viewers entertained.
I can best describe this as Hunger Games meets The Truman Show, except here the stars of the show are fully aware of the artificiality of their lives.
I do try to read all of the Korean fiction translated into English, but had rather missed that this is YA sci-fi which is not exactly my genre, so I'm not really the best judge of its merits on its own terms. For me, the basic set-up of both the world and the story was rather implausible. The author has said in interviews that she wanted to build a logical world - "I believed that if the people in the book failed to be content with the principles of the world, readers would inevitably ask, “Why are the people in this book so stupid?” I did my best to save readers from that annoying reading experience" - but she failed to save me.
And the story flagged rather badly at the climax - I was expecting both more of a satisfactory or surprising resolution and some storylines set up for the next book, but the closing chapters read more like a series of offcuts and deleted scenes.
That said, the bulk of the story in the middle of the novel, as Chobahm discovers why her resemblance to Haeri is so strong and how the world of Snowglobe really functions, did grab me enough to keep me turning the pages.
2 stars for personal taste although I suspect this will appeal to the target audience.

This is the most stupid dystopian book I have ever read. Y'all giving it 3 stars< have a kindness inside of you that I lack. Anyways, if you liked the book, I’m happy for you. I very much didn’t and this review will reflect that 🫠🫠
Climate change has fucked the planet. So, naturally, we have divided humanity into two groups:
1) Snowglobe, the last place on Earth that has warmth. A select number of actors live there in amazing luxury. Their lives are recorded and live-streamed to group 2 (if you're not entertaining, you're killed off. Very logical!).
2) Everyone else lives in areas that are perpetually cold. Citizens must work every day running/walking on big hamster wheels to create electricity. They eat little and watch a lot of TV while dreaming of becoming an actor to go to Snowglobe. And I mean this: EVERYONE wants to be an actor. That's all they talk about.
The book just follows Mary Sue (I forgot the name of the main character, yes). Mary Sue is talentless and not special but she also somehow looks and acts exactly like the prettiest actress in Snowglobe. That actress dies and Mary Sue ends up in Snowglobe pretending to be Pretty Actress. Mary Sue's best friend and TWIN BROTHER live in Snowglobe and do not recognize her (this also makes a lot of sense). HOWEVER, Hot-and-Rich Actor Guy instantly realizes Mary Sue isn't Pretty Actress and starts caring for her.
Does this sound interesting to you? To me, it felt like being lobotomized slowly.
- Characters: dumb, cheesy, depthless.
- Plot: dumb and dragging, I am not sorry.
- Pacing: my god. Slow. The story is so dumb and it keeps flip-flopping different plot points without actually providing content. It’s all world-building based on Mary Sue going parties and places pretending to be Pretty Actress and hoping she isn't caught (up until 60-70%).
- Ending: I didn’t like it. Like, sure. If you manage to suspend your disbelief for 320 pages, the ending will be satisfying. Unfortunately, my eye was twitching.
I liked the translation, but sadly this was stupid.
Edit: a major plot hole for me (this isn't a spoiler per se). Everyone in Snowglobe is Korean. Considering that it's the only place in the world with warmth, I would've expected multiculturalism. Or at least mention how other nationalities live, if they are also featured in Snowglobe, or how they experience it (do they watch it? is it dubbed?).

No wonder this is getting turned into a kdrama because it reads like one. But also not a good kdrama. More like something that I would be super into in the beginning and just lose interest after a few episodes. This had such an interesting concept and the beginning was sooo good. But as you get closer to the ending everything turned batshit crazy. The last part of this book was like a fever dream. Everything went off the rails and shit didn’t even make sense anymore and some stuff got thrown in just for the crazy factor but it was just like wtf is happening and why is it still going. It’s a duology but I just don’t care enough to continue.

Honestly I just love a good YA dystopia. Checked all the fucked up worldbuilding boxes for me w the addition of badass main characters + it was really well translated. A little bumpy in the plot at times but I still really enjoyed

The FMC is accepted into the glitzy world of the 1% and she finds out that it's not as innocent and carefree as it seems. Cue typical story beats out of every YA rags to riches storyline.
I didn't feel compelled to finish this. My mind wouldn't stop wandering.

Jeju to miało taki potencjał. Ten zamysł był taki zarąbisty, a autorka zrobiła tu takie coś. Przyznam, że 3/4 tej książki to była dla mnie lekka droga przez mękę. Te zachowania bohaterki były tak głupie i lekkomyślne, że nie mogłam już z nią wytrzymać. Dosłownie ciągle dostawała jakieś sygnały, że ta reżyserka jest jakaś dziwna i nie ten tego, a ona się zgadzała na wszystko co tamta mówiła i ciągle była za nią. Wtf no halo. Gdyby nie ten plot twist (którego przyznam, że się nie spodziewałam), to chyba nadal bym ją męczyła, a nie dokończyła na raz. Nie wiem czy będę czytać drugi tom, choć te ostatnie 100 stron mnie jakkolwiek wciągnęły; bo nadal jakoś nie pałam entuzjazmem do tej historii.

it was a bit convoluted at parts and some things (mirrors, footage rule) were *such* an obvious plot device. also, the book lowk ignored the thing (snowglobe power source) that it had been discusssing as a breach of morality?? like the ending was about something different??
but i still liked it lol, chobahm was a good main character and i thought the discussions of various ethics at different points added a lot to the book
but! i don’t think this should be advertised as a “hunger games x squid game” because there’s very little violence. i would personally describe this book as an introspective dystopian novel about morals set in a crumbling utopia. not a bloody, violent, deconstruction of society. :/

so excited to start this one, i love books that have been translated and have been craving a dystopian read ever since sunrise on the reaping… the premise is stunning and i think this will be a mix of thg and squid games, both of which i adore!
i’ve wanted to read this for forever, ever since i picked it up in a barnes and noble, read the first page, promptly forgot its name, and spent the next two years trying to remember it….
but! i get to read it now, so maybe it did turn out all right 😭

I love reading translated genre fiction when I can find it, because it's interesting seeing how the same stories and tropes are played out using different cultural contexts.
There's not much new here, especially not in how the story unfolds in a "uncovering the real nasty truth behind a dystopian society" context. But what makes this a little different - and at times harder to connect to - is reading this from a South Korean context. These are South Korean values about fame, culture, societal expectations, television, beauty, etc.
It's a decent read and went by very quickly, but again, nothing really new here if you've read a few dystopian novels.
There's not much new here, especially not in how the story unfolds in a "uncovering the real nasty truth behind a dystopian society" context. But what makes this a little different - and at times harder to connect to - is reading this from a South Korean context. These are South Korean values about fame, culture, societal expectations, television, beauty, etc.

I read this because it was advertised as similar to Hunger Games and Squid Games. It definitely didn't meet those expectations; however, it was a gripping story and was extremely interesting overall.

A dystopian mystery/thriller set in a climate-devastated earth where the only temperate climate is inside a controlled glass-dome. Residents inside the dome are part of a reality television entertainment program. The people outside the dome work to generate power for the dome. A celebrity dies under mysterious circumstances. Our protagonist is invited to be a part of the program and signs away her privacy. Be careful what you sign up for!
This was a cool setting and premise. It uses the doppelgänger trope and takes that up a notch. I was not invested in the mystery, it just didn't feel surprising. I might have been more connected to the story if the characters stood out and experienced growth. Still this was mostly entertaining, more so in the first half.

I love a good dystopian read as it’s one of my favorite genres. Snowglobe definitely checked all the boxes for me!
In a future frozen world due to climate change, a city called Snowglobe exists under a dome where the weather is always perfect, and the inhabitants have everything.
Outside in the frozen world, the people are the ones who power Snowglobe by riding stationary bikes as they do everything they can to be warm enough and have enough food to survive. Their entertainment is made up of 24/7 reality TV of the inhabitants of the domed city.
To be chosen as a Snowglobe inhabitant and to be affiliated with one of the reality shows either as an actor or as a director is everything and all they strive for.
I had so much fun reading this translated Korean book. It’s reminiscent of Squid Game with how bonkers it can get inside Snowglobe.

J'ai beaucoup aimé le concept qui est très original et l'ambiance bien pesante avec tous les secrets et les manipulations qu'on voit se dessiner dans l'ombre. Par contre j'ai eu plus de mal avec le style d'écriture que j'ai trouvé assez décousu : j'avais l'impression de sauter d'un chapitre à l'autre et ça m'a pas mal sortie de l'histoire, je ne sais pas bien comment l'expliquer ? Pareil en ce qui concerne les rebondissements à gogo sur la dernière partie du roman : c'était à la fois trop bien parce que DAMN, ça bouuuuge, mais d'un autre côté, ça faisait aussi un peu too much ? Il n'empêche que c'était une chouette lecture mais ça m'a encore une fois paru un peu décousu un peu dans la surenchère en mode "ah et ça. AH ET PUIS ÇA AUSSI. ET ÇAAAAAAAAAAA !". C'est bon girl, un ou deux plot twist, c'est déjà ouf hein...
En bref : un roman original au concept glaçant qui m'a transportée le temps de ma lecture, malgré quelques petits bémols à mes yeux !
J'ai beaucoup aimé le concept qui est très original et l'ambiance bien pesante avec tous les secrets et les manipulations qu'on voit se dessiner dans l'ombre. Par contre j'ai eu plus de mal avec le style d'écriture que j'ai trouvé assez décousu : j'avais l'impression de sauter d'un chapitre à l'autre et ça m'a pas mal sortie de l'histoire, je ne sais pas bien comment l'expliquer ? Pareil en ce qui concerne les rebondissements à gogo sur la dernière partie du roman : c'était à la fois trop bien parce que DAMN, ça bouuuuge, mais d'un autre côté, ça faisait aussi un peu too much ? Il n'empêche que c'était une chouette lecture mais ça m'a encore une fois paru un peu décousu un peu dans la surenchère en mode "ah et ça. AH ET PUIS ÇA AUSSI. ET ÇAAAAAAAAAAA !". C'est bon girl, un ou deux plot twist, c'est déjà ouf hein...
En bref : un roman original au concept glaçant qui m'a transportée le temps de ma lecture, malgré quelques petits bémols à mes yeux !

Это книга стала для меня почвой для нового опыта. "Снежный Шар" - первая книга корейского автора, которую я прочитала. Это первая антиутопия, которую я прочитала за последниие лет пять точно. Это первая книга, которая дала в полной мере ощутить "мне нравиться, что здесь написано, но не нравится как это написано".
Итак, в мире начался новый Ледниковый период, единственным местом, где можно регулировать погоду (а соответственно вести сельское хозяйство и прочие необходимые для жизни атрибуты) является город Сноубол, закрытый от остального мира куполом. Единственным недостатком Сноубола является то, что он жрет невероятно огромное количество электричества, как почти все технопримочки разной степени бесполезности с вайлдберриз. Электричеством Сноубол обеспечивают люди извне, которые крутят педали на многочисленных велотренажерах по десять часов в день. Взамен эти люди получают одну из основных человеческих потребностей наравне с хлебом - зрелища. Под "зрелищами" подразумеваю многочисленные сериалы, производимые Сноуболом, которые с замиранием сердца смотрят люди извне. И этот элемент мне показался крайне занимательным, потому что до этого я не видела в антиутопиях подобного элемента транзакции. Люди вне Сноубола жертвуют своими жизнями и здоровьем, обеспечивая Сноубол энергией, в то время как жители Сноубола жертвуют своей приватностью и обеспечивают простых людей развлечениями. Обычно, подростковые антиутопии фокусировались именно на элементе угнетения без подобных нюансов.
Сама идея, конечно, не совсем новая. Я вот, например, по мере прочтения то и дело вспоминала вторую серию первого сезона "Черного Зеркала". Правда, там посыл был немного в другом.
В совершенно обычной семье живет наша главная героиня Чон Чобам. Он тоже ежедневно крутит педали, ненавидит свою жизнь и мечтает поехать в Сноубол, чтобы стать там режиссером. И ей предоставляется такой шанс, когда на пороге семейного дома появляется кумир Чобам - госпожа Ча Соль. Ча Соль готова исполнить мечту Чобам, но, разумеется, не бесплатно. От Чобам требуется изображать самую популярную актрису Сноубола - безвременно почившую Ко Хэри. Как два пальца об асфальт!
И тут кроется довольно интересный момент. Для Чон Чобам жители Сноубола - по сути, не совсем люди. Они персонажи из сериалов, которые она смотрит у себя. Персонаж от реального человека, разумеется, отличается и сильно, но Чобам не видит эту грань. Ко Хэри-человек покончила с собой и это ужасно. Но у Ко Хэри-персонажа просто не может быть такого финала. И для Чобам (да и для всех остальных) именно Ко Хэри-персонаж важнее. И раз Ко Хэри - не более, чем персонаж, то ее роль можно сыграть. Сыграть эту роль дано не каждому, а только тому, кто внешне похож. И Чобам упивается в какой-то степени чувством того, что именно она из прочих подходит на эту роль.
Большинство подростковых антиутопий нулевых строились на одинаковом концепте: мир победил голод и болезни, а людей лишают социальных свобод по типу возможности влюбляться, выбирать себе партнера и так далее. Вот в чем штука: для человека, который всю жизнь прожил в нищете, подобный сценарий не покажется антиутопическим. Ты не будешь думать о каких-то там социальных правах, когда тебе кушать нечего. И поначалу Чобам была именно таким человеком. Ее абсолютно устраивало то, что бабушка и мама Хэри проявляют к ней насилие, а сама она под прицелом телекамер двадцать четыре часа в сутки без выходных и отпусков. А все потому что у нее теперь есть популярность, вкусная еда и брендовые вещи. И этот разрыв между Чобам и настоящей Хэри настолько силен, что первая откровенно не понимает как последняя могла решиться наложить на себя руки.
Арка Чон Чобам по всем канонам должна была заключаться в медленном избавлении от иллюзий. И на первый взгляд Пак Соён именно это и дает. Однако, на деле, автор вертит Чобам, как симом в СИМС-е, заставляя поступать так, как надо по сюжету. Чобам игнорирует информацию, которую только что получила, меняет свой характер и желание по щелчку пальцев и все это ради того, чтобы сделать работу автора проще. В какой-то момент она вообще решает отказаться от своей мечты стать режиссером и не прочь притворяться Хэри до конца своих дней. Это подразумевает, что она никогда не увидит свою семью и никак не сможет с ними связаться. Г-жа Пак хочет убедить читателя, что данные перемены произошли постепенно из-за того, что Ча Соль манипулировала Чобам. Вот только, Ча Соль довольно быстро раскрыла все карты и перестала строить из себя добрячку. Ча Соль - Пигмалион, а Ко Хэри - ее Галатея. И ей плевать кто будет исполнять эту роль, потому что без Хэри-Галатеи ее карьере конец. Ча Соль никогда этих намерений не скрывала, но Чобам по какой-то причине продолжает ею восхищаться. И это действительно могло быть интересно. Можно было бы показать то, как взрослый человек манипулирует легковнушаемым подростком, ибо является его кумиром и пользуется этим. Но все сводится к тому, что Ча Соль больше напоминает диснеевского злодея. Она что-то требует, а Чобам делает это потому что... так надо, ибо иначе сюжета не будет?
Третья часть, в которой начинается основной экшн мчится голопом по Европам. Автор также начинает чуть ли не в каждой главе представлять по новому персонажу. И все диалоги, за редкими исключениями, описываются сплошным нарративом, ровно как и предыстории. А ведь данные взаимодействия, учитывая то, кем эти новые герои для Чобам являются, могли бы быть крайне любопытными. Не буду вдаваться в спойлеры, но мне этого крайне не хватало, поэтому я осталась разочарованной.
Пак Соён поднимает много интересных тем, но она проходится по ним крайне поверхностно, по моему мнению. Не отрицаю также, что проблема может быть в моей собственной неосведомленности касательно корейской дорамной культуры, поэтому многие вещи мне были не понятны.
Пожалуй закончу на обсуждении еще одного аспекта - Ко Хэри. По всей книге тонкой нитью проходит линия осознания Чобам того, что Ко Хэри не была персонажем, который просто шикарно жил и был окном в другую жизнь для тысячи своих поклонников. Хэри была в первую очеред семнадцатилетней девочкой, у которой были свои мечты, мысли и переживания. Вот только, мы эту девочку так и не узнали. Даже Чобам ее так и не узнала по настоящему. А соответственно, Хэри так и осталась некой эфемерной идеей. Идеей, вокруг которой все построено, но не более.
История, в принципе, закончена, но существует вторая часть. Когда ее переведут, да и переведут ли вообще, пока неизвестно. Не сказать, что я горю особым желанием читать сиквел, но если он-таки выйдет, то кто знает?

I was bored for most of this and confused. This is a Chinese translated book, and all the characters names are in Chinese. So many characters are talked about I was so confused about who we were talking about for most of it.
It was an interesting story though. And the snowy/cold vibes were great to read about since it's very cold and snowy where I live right now!!
But I do not care enough to finish off this duology!!

There’s an interesting scope of ideas in this Korean YA novel about a girl fighting a dystopia and saving the world through pluck. It’s a book made for twelve-year-olds but well-written with an enough engaging story that anyone should be able to enjoy it. In a world of freezing temperatures where people go to work powering furnaces to fight the cold, there is a wealthy city called Snowglobe that takes all the resources and functions as a mini clean-cut dystopia. The city provides entertainment for the towns in the form of 24-hour reality shows about its citizens but after the mysterious death of a young reality star, the protagonist is prince-and-the-paupered in to take her place. But soon it becomes apparent there is a larger conspiracy at work and she needs to save the day by combatting class exploitation and the harmful effects of reality entertainment. Has some plots twists that are kind of fun and there are some ideas, but it’s presented like a teen sit-com.

I haven't read any dystopian books in a while, even though it's one of my favorite genres. This book was decent and easy to follow. The story was unique, but the execution didn't quite hit the mark. I definitely appreciated how fast-paced it was. A solid 3 stars.

This book was translated from Korean and I listened to it on audio and could not tell at all. The premise is if you take the televised portion of The Hunger Games and mix it with Squid Games. I liked the grass is always greener concept where the cushy life of the snow globe was not as it seems. There are a few twists and turns that were a little predictable but I did not mind. It was fast paced and I really enjoyed the concept. Brought me back to the 2010 dystopian days. It sets up for a sequel that I will for sure read!

I've been trying to broaden my horizons and read more translated fiction, so I'm not just reading originally English or Dutch books, and it's been such a valuable experience. These books have mainly been literary fiction and nonfiction though, so I was so interested to read a translated sci-fi book for once!
Snowglobe is one of the better dystopians I've read in a while. There's a lot that could make you think, and a lot that applies to current day society. But there's also just so much delicious intrigue and drama. The book is fast-paced, and I read it in almost one sitting, as one reveal after the other kept me glued to the page.

Przez całą książkę byłam zainteresowana i zaangażowana w takim samym stopniu. Z jednej strony, historia jest dość schematyczna jak na swój gatunek i widać tutaj debiutanckie pióro, z drugiej jest w niej pewien powiew świeżości. W pierwszych rozdziałach poznajemy relacje, codzienność, historię i cele głównej bohaterki oraz zostaje nam zarysowany wstęp do świata Śnieżnej Kopuły. Łatwo się po takim wstępie zorientować jak dalej potoczą się jej losy. Autorce udaje się jednak wprowadzić elementy, które wzbogacają historię.
Trochę bardziej liczyłam na pogłębiony opis działania tego świata i krytykę społeczną , bo nie do końca byłam przekonana działaniem niektórych zabiegów. Bohaterowie mnie zaciekawili i chciałabym poczytać o nich oraz ich relacjach więcej. Na szczęście jest zapowiedziana premiera kolejnego tomu i mam nadzieję, że wtedy moje wątpliwości zostają rozwiane! Ta historia wciąż ma potencjał na bycie interesującym odbiciem społeczeństwa koreańskiego oraz tamtejszej kultury idoli. To naprawdę ciekawy pomysł spojrzenia na ten świat poprzez książkę z gatunku dystopii.

I liked how relatable the ideas in this book was, such as the impact that influencers and social media have on our society; however, a lot of the content was recycled because dystopian ya books have been done so many times. Very interesting Dystopian. It gets a bit confusing trying to keep all the info and characters straight but you do get the hang of it fairly quickly. Excited for book 2 audiobook to be available cause I wanna know more!

After twelve long years since I read the Hunger Games, I've found a book that fills the Hunger Games sized hole in my heart. This book was awesome. It's been so long since I read something, was totally immersed, then was thrown for a loop that had me reeling and berating myself for not seeing the signs sooner -- so masterfully was it buried under the surface. In a world racked by climate change, TV dramas, real people leading unreal lives, are the only things that keep society running (quite literally). When Chobahm gets the chance of a lifetime to take up the role of her favored star in Snowglobe, the only place spared the harsh subzero climate, she jumps at it -- only to find life in the picture perfect world of Snowglobe is not what it seems. I compare this book to the Hunger Games not only for its scathing criticism of the entertainment industry and its condemnation of people in power who refuse to help those whose care they are responsible for, but also for its really complicated characters, who not only struggle with their own role in the machine, but also find ways to connect with one another in meaningfully along the way. Chobahm, like Katniss, struggles with feelings of responsibility, with guilt, with shame -- and is a total badass -- and all of this lends to her humanity in the same way that Katniss first struck me, and has remained in my heart ever since. There are a few aspects of this story that I'm excited to see get dealt with in book two (!!), but overall this was really masterfully composed. It's gritty, it's dark, it's thoughtful, but above all, it reminds us that the only salvation we have in a harsh and unfeeling world is each other.
