Professor Hunter McCoy, attending a medical research conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, learns that a scientist may be bioengineering a lethal form of red tide to secretly disperse into the Gulf waters off Southwest Florida. McCoy, on leave from his medical school to study the effects of red tide on human health at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, is reactivated to his old job with the Defense Intelligence Agency to evaluate the threat. But right from the start his efforts to investigate and stop the impending catastrophe are effectively hampered by a Russian mole operating deep within the DIA. He also learns that an old nemesis in the SVR along with his father, a member of Putin’s inner circle, may be behind the operation. Hunter also discovers that they might be using his brother Gary—long thought to have been killed in the Gulf war—as an unwilling pawn in their murderous scheme. With time running out to develop an antidote to the lethal red tide, McCoy learns, with horrible certainty, that any effort he makes to discover the truth about Gary could jeopardize the lives of thousands of Floridians.
This was an intriguing story that kept me on the edge of my seat through the entire book. I had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
