When this mermaid finds herself in a scary situation, will she find her courage within?
Lola the mermaid seems so brave and courageous... but she was not always that way. She used to feel timid and out of place, so her dad gave her a special gift, a bracelet of courage.
One day whilst out on an adventure, Lola loses her bracelet and as the tides start to turn, she must find a new way home. Without her bracelet, she feels scared and lonely but with the help of a wise dolphin, some friendly sea urchins and beautiful jellyfish, Lola finds her strength within.
Lola, The Bracelet of Courage is a heartwarming children’s picture book written in lyrical rhyme that shares a great message about courage and resilience.

Review (5/11/22): The illustrations were so cute and well done. Very detailed with even the smallest air bubble showing a thoughtful artist in Zuzanna Svobodova. If you like the cover art, the pages within follow that style closely. I loved the expression on the octopus in the Fun fact section. It kinda reminded me of the Littlest Pet Shop toys that I grew up with but aquatic.
The story was well composed and subtly tied into heavier topics. This heaviness really stems from the dedication that said that this was dedicated to a little girl named Lola who passed away from brain cancer. The bracelet of courage was likely symbolic of a hospital bracelet. When it was gifted to Lola by her dad, he said it would help her be brave. There is a lot of text so this might be better for someone from 5-7 instead of 3 or 4 but if you as the book reader have mad narration skills, I say try it at any age.
It is on Kindle Unlimited, so if you have a subscription you should try it out. But I would say try and use a laptop or larger tablet because the phone version glitched out on me a bit.
Read for my toddler's story time. She decided to wake up at 3am. Cute illustrations. A mermaid lacked courage. When she went with her friends to the waterfalls, they somehow left without her. She was scared on her journey home. She met a few different sea animals on the way and each in turn gave her advice on where to find her courage.
For those who love mermaids comes a great story that explains to little ones how courage works and that whenever you need it is always within you. Although presented in the usual format for such stories the artwork is what makes this book a winner.
The book is a bit heavy on the text so would be better for slightly older elementary students than for those younger kids who just enjoy a quick read. Furthermore the writing itself is simple to follow, easy to read and follows a slightly rhyming format when it can.
What really makes this book, though, are the illustrations. They are full page, brightly colored and fully detailed down to the smallest air bubble. There is so much to see, especially since the illustrations seem to be 3D in most instances, and the colors are wonderfully blended such as in the merpeoples' tails or even in Lola's hair itself.
And finally the thing that got me with this book was the small blurb at the front of the book, which explained the little girl that was behind the creation of Lola. Although you may not want to share her story with your own little one right away it is worth the time to take a moment to read her story and just acknowledge the bright light that she was.
Most definitely a cute story even though it was a bit on the cookie cutter side but one that may find a home in today's modern children who seem to favor mermaids and be spoiled enough to be able to indulge in their siren's call.
LOLA: THE BRACELET OF COURAGE by Sarah Cullen is a children’s rhyming book that focuses on Lola, the little mermaid whose is unable to combat her growing fears.
Lola is a young mermaid who is frightened of many things under the sea until her father gives her a ‘bracelet of courage’, that allows Lola to swim without fear. One day Lola loses her bracelet leaving her lonely and afraid until she meets a young dolphin who shows her ways to cope with her anxiety and fears.
LOLA: THE BRACELET OF COURAGE is a story of fear and anxiety, courage and coping. The images are colorful; the rhyming scheme is AABB; the language and text is easy to understand but some words may be more difficult for the younger child e.g. demise, despair, transcends.
This is a book about a little mermaid who is scared of everything. When her dad gives her a bracelet one day that will bring her courage, she begins to do things she never thought possible. When she loses her bracelet and then gets lost and has to find her way home, she meets friends along the way that encourage her to find the courage within herself.
I like this book. I think it shows how we all should look inside of ourselves when it comes to courage and conquering our fears. I think this speaks a lot to everyday life.
I think this book would be great in a classroom setting in a lesson about fears and conquering them.
If you know a mermaid fan- this story is a must-have! The rhyme and meter makes you feel like you are singing a song throughout the whole story. Beautifully written and the illustrations will take you into a magical place under the sea. It will help children discover their inner courage. It is more than a book. It's poetry and art in every spread. My kids are in love with this book and I'm sure they will want to read it again and again. The fun facts at the end of the story was the icing on the cake! Highly recommend!
This entire book series is absolutely adorable! The illustrations are bright and colorful. They definitely kept my toddlers attention. In this story Lola (can’t help but sing the song in my head, lol) looses what she thinks gives her courage and is forced to find it within. It was a sweet way to remind littles that sometimes we need to refocus before continuing our journey. Then the last page put the cherry on top for me because I love a good bit of knowledge with any children’s book.
A lovely story with beautiful illustrations. Lola the mermaid needs courage so her dad makes her a special courage bracelet to help her out. But when the bracelet is lost Lola has to find the courage she needs on her own by looking on the inside. With the help of a few little friends, Lola find her courage (and her bracelet) and realizes she was brave all on her own.
I love, love, LOVE this book! This should be on every child’s bookshelf. For even though it’s a story about a mermaid, it’s really so much more. The stunning illustrations complement the story perfectly as we are taken on Lola’s adventure with her to find her courage. The message is one we all need—at any age. I highly recommend this book and now I need to read the others by these talented authors and illustrator.
Lola is brave, but only because of the Bracelet of Courage her dad gave her. One day, the bracelet is lost, and Lola has to find courage somewhere else.
Some of these rhymes were a little contrived, and the message was just a touch too explicit, but the plot was clever and the character likable. I loved every illustration. I wouldn’t hesitate to share this book with the magical kindergarten girls in my life.
Lola the mermaid has always been a little afraid so her father gives her a bracelet made of gold and seashells. When she wears it she feels brave. But when she loses it while playing, she's alone and afraid to go home. See how she gets her courage to find her way home. The story is very well written and the illustrations are beautifully done to match the story. Great for ages 3-6, possibly older for those learning to read.
Lola is a mermaid who felt brave and bold after her father gifted her a shell bracelet of courage! Unfortunately she lost the bracelet and had to face her fears of going home alone. Thankfully a few new ocean friends reminded her that her courage came from within and she persevered and found her inner strength.
This story is inspiring as well as visually stunning! This book is one of several in the Ocean Tale series and is one of our favorites! Check out their other books and mission!
This book is absolutely gorgeous! The story, written in rhyme, is about a mermaid, named Lola, who believes she needs her magical bracelet to be brave and strong. Through the guidance of her ocean friends, she discovers that courage from within. The illustrations are stunning! The color palette and artwork by Zuzana is amazing! This is a treasure I highly recommend.

The bracelet of Courage: Lola is a well written book by Sarah Cullen and Carmen Ellis. It is beautifully illustrated by Zuzana Svobodova. While Lola, the mermaid feels her courage comes in her bracelet, she looses it and is very upset. But what does she learn from the sea animals? I highly recommend this book .⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think “Lola” is my favourite book in this series! The images are absolutely beautiful! A breathtaking underwater journey with this little mermaid who overcomes her fear and finds courage and confidence — in herself.
The intended audience is for four to eight year olds. The themes are bravery and resilience. I picked this book because it talks about uplifting messages for kids to follow. I would use this in my classroom to make sure my students understand what it means to be courageous.
I loved this book! It is great for all little kids as it relays the message of being courageous and finding the courage to do something. The art in this story was excellent and very detailed, which can engage young children even more.
Great and inspiring story for young girls. I liked the rhymes although some of the words I'm not sure the target demographic would understand. I liked the message overall and the illustrations reminded me a bit of Gabbys Dollhouse.
I love Sarah Cullen's books for learning opportunities for littles. Lola thinks her bracelet is what gives her courage and strength, but in this adorable little story, she learns that it's in her the whole time.
The illustrations for this are absolutely stunning. The story itself is sweet and the rhyming is fun. I'm sure I'll be buying more of these as gifts! My children approve!
