Surprised by Love #2

The Terrible Personal Shopper

Rate this book
Ever stumbled into a job you’re totally not qualified to do then fallen––literally––head over heels for a client? Just me?

Leila Scott

When my best friend Josie asked me to cover for her new job, I didn’t hesitate. I’m nice like that.

The plan: Meet the rich client. Take notes of their measurements and fashion tastes. Then hand over to Josie. Job done.

But Josie didn’t tell me the client is six-foot-four Hollywood hunk, Blaze Hopkins. My ultimate onscreen crush.

I can’t stop my face glowing red as I wrap the tape measure around his hot body.

When he asks me questions, I reply with squeaks and giggles. Total fangirl move.

But Blaze doesn’t know what a personal shopper does––or does NOT do––and he makes me an offer that makes my jaw drop and toes curl.

Join him on his latest press tour. How can I pass up the opportunity to travel the world with this heartthrob?

All I have to do is pretend I totally know what I’m doing––I don’t.

Play it cool–I’m gonna fail that too.

And most-importantly, do NOT fall for Blaze Hopkins.

Let’s just face it. I’m doomed.

The Terrible Personal Shopper is an opposites-attract, romantic comedy with witty humor and heart-fluttering romance.

Author note: This is a steamy clean read. All of the sizzle with steamy kisses, but no sex or swearing.

The Terrible Personal Shopper is the first book in a new series Surprised by Love that seems like it will be all about three sisters.  While I totally like the concept and I'm a bit more excited about the overly geeky LOTR fan sister we have to get through the eldest, too clumsy to be believable sister.

Leila has never found a job she couldn't get fired from in a few weeks, but when a friend calls and needs her to cover, she tries to pretend she knows what she is doing, goes to take the measurements of the prospective client.  Leila had no idea said client would be her famous movie star crush, Blake Hopkins.  Now somehow she has ended up being asked to go on tour with him to promote his new movie and she has no clue how to be a personal shopper but who is giving up a paid trip through Europe, not Leila, that is for sure.

There are some things in this story that are cute and others that just seemed to rub me the wrong.  Blake seems like a good guy overall that maybe just had never thought about settling down and finding the one until a friend suggested using a matchmaker if he didn't find someone special soon.  When he meets Leila, she fumbles through his measurement and literally hits him in the junk with her tape.  But after all of that, he is a bit intrigued and wants to get to know her better.  No better way to do that than to invite her on his promotion tour for the movie he is releasing soon.  Leila soon finds out not everyone is friendly and Blake's interest in her is not just plutonic.  I should have loved this but some of the situations seemed pretty manufactured for Blake to save the day with his fame or money.  I think in those moments is when the story bugged me.  Also I never got what Blake saw in the klutzy Leila and why she was so endearing to  him.

The story had some cute moments and stays PG throughout.  I was looking for something maybe a little more on the PG-13 or R side of life.  It was cute but missing some of the major climaxes I was looking for.  Also when Blake came to do the big gesture at the end, Leila totally ruined it, so I was a little mad at her.  But that said, I loved Leila's sisters, Blake was adorable and I liked the set up going into the next story.  You could tell there were other series and characters overlapping but you don't need to have read those books to enjoy this one.

Major take aways.  PG story with an okay heroine and some OTT moments that could be funny much like a Will Ferrol movie but not really have enough substance to carry the entire book.

Narration:
Brian Holden was fantastic and gave Blake a down to earth feel.  Charlie Albers choices for a voice and narration really rubbed me a little wrong.  She made Leila sound a bit whiny and honestly got on my nerves a bit with the type of narration she chose to perform.  For some reason this book seemed to run a little slow and so I bumped up my normal 1.5x speed to 1.75x which was a better fit for me.

This book is Laugh Out Loud FUNNY!
The misadventures of Leila while being the Personal Shopper for Hollywood movie star of the hour, Blaze, are the most hilarious I've read in a long, long time.
This book is equal parts funny, swoon worthy, and addictive.
I adore Blaze and Leila. They are the sweetest, most humble and genuine people ever.
I love the way the relationship blooms between them, and how nothing seems rushed or pushed or forced.
I read it in one go and couldn't put it down.
Leila's sisters, Lucy and Chessy, are so different from her, and also equally delightful.
Getting to hear from Elle and Zander again was a plus.
Another plus was the tours around Londo, Paris, Tokyo that we take throughout the book. It's like we are having dinner at London in the Sky, On top of the Eiffel Tower, or taking a stroll in the streets in Japan.
We also get an inside look at what life for the rich and famous is like, and the kinds of people they are surrounded with.
Lots of good stuff inside and totally worth the read.
Can't recommend this enough.
I received a free ARC copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

[🇬🇧/🇺🇸] It’s a romantic comedy that will make you laugh a lot. The main female character is clumsy and has a few misadventures, one of which is the meet-cute. It’s a smooth and light read and I really enjoyed it. It has also dual POV and that’s a bonus for me!

Hilarious, crazy, lots of laughs, LOVED IT!

Girl had me thinking she was crazy at the beginning. It was Jerry Lewis kind of moments from the start. But after the initial shock wore off of her unbelievable misfortunes she became endearing. And Blaze, lets just say I usually like the female MC best but this one was all about Blaze for me. He was so down to earth likable. I loved how he went after what he saw was missing in his life.
I was literally laughing out loud in places. One truth will stick with me for a long long time. In fact I shall never look at a solitary sock again without thinking of this passage: “There is nothing more demoralizing to me than slaving all day doing laundry, ironing clothes, then folding them, putting them away… Only to see a sock in the bottom of the laundry hamper five seconds later. Not a pair of socks, mind you. One. Just one lowly sock laughing at me like a villain about to give a monologue at the end of an action movie.”
This book was longer by about 100 pages than the average book length I read. However, as I neared the end of the story I was like “WHAT!? It’s over already?!” I mean this story just had the pages turning themselves. It was a great read and I was sad it was over. BUT loved that there was a lead in to the second book in the series and a teaser as well! Can’t wait for it!
Rating: PG/PG-13 a couple steamy kisses but no getting handsy and no foul language.

- dual POV
- actor/celebrity trope

Ok ok ok. First things first. I almost didn’t read this because of the cover. It looks like a book for kids. 🙈And the title also didn’t pull me in. I basically had no idea what I was getting into but decided to try it out. And I’m sooooo glad I did. Because this book is actually a gem!!! It was fun and romantic, and I loved the characters.

The scene where Leila has to measure Blaze for clothing measurements had me dying laughing. She’s freaking out about measuring his leg and not knowing where the measurement starts and stops. And I just laughed and laughed because I felt like I’d be the exact same way.

My only reservations is that it did feel a bit instalove which is not typically something I rave about - but the truth is that I did love this book a lot. I was so surprised and I’d read the next in series for sure.

Totally unbelievable. DNF

There are several unbelievable plot points but I’ll only mention the biggest. The h is a total klutz and disaster in general. That would be okay if she had some endearing qualities like funny, smart, witty, talented etc, but No, there’s nothing to like about her. And it’s totally baffling why the H would like her. There’s almost no discussion between them, let alone witty banter, things in common, emotional or intriguing connections.

It was totally ridiculous and I kept waiting to be seen some justification for it but none came. Then when more unbelievable plots points kept piling up I decided I was done. DNF.

I read this because of a recommendation. First off, I’m not a big fan of Hollywood or royal type stories. There is a sweet love story but this one was a little bit of a miss for me.

A nice easy rom com to start off the new year. It's in a similar style to Sophie Kinsella's books. Not as good though. 3 stars for this one.

I enjoyed this book okay. There was a whole lot of sexual tension, and it stayed on the clean side of romance, but was still a bit much for me. There were a few funny spots, and I liked some of the side characters a lot.

The set up for this RomCom is pretty hilarious and the craziness that follows makes for a fun story but I can't give a higher rating simply because I had to skim. Not much bores me faster than a steamy make out session that lasts for pages. And it was pretty steamy. No sex on the page but the reader gets tidbits of what their honeymoon was like. Personally, I didn't need to know. I'm sure if you enjoy steamy you'd rate this book higher than me because there was a lot to like about it. It was just too much steam for my personal tastes.

I'd give it 3 and 1/2 stars.

It was a pretty good story, albeit very very predictable.

I think what annoyed me the most was the seemingly clutzy, slightly ditzy, bumbling failure that Leila was projected to be. Seriously first of all no one is that accident prone... and secondly there's no way someone that practically had to raise her siblings while living in New York City was that nieve about things like paparazzi, fame, and vindictiveness.

There were parts I felt were very done and went really far and wide to achieve a great feel and meaningful moments in the story. But parts felt like a pick up story following a generic outline on romance writing 101.
I. Chemical Equation = setup (girl has problem)
2. Cute meet = catalyst (girl helps friend - meets guy)
3. Sexy complication = turning point (guy falling for girl /professional paradox)
4. The hook = middle story (sharing romantic adventures)
5. Swivel = 2nd turning point (bad person causes havoc : guy handles it poorly)
6. The dark moment = crisis climax (guys fuckup is revealed)
7. Joyful defeat = resolution (guy makes extreme gesture happily ever after time)

Sometimes the entire damsel in distress, girl needs to be saved or rescued, or the worse beautiful nieve girl failure gets rich gorgeous guy to fall in love and take care of her forever is just overplayed. I just hated the fact that blaze was constantly having to rescue her because she came off as less than capable.

I originally read this book cause I wanted to read the sequel and realized it was a series. Since I like to read things in order I started off at the beginning. For those of you concerned with how clean a read this is I want to make you aware of the content regarding this matter so I will say the following: I’ve read other books by this author before and while I know she has some descriptive kissing scenes, ogling language, and bedroom scenes are closed door, this book does not exactly follow the usual rules. First there’s basically an entire chapter in the book where it’s just heavy making out, which is more than Burton usually includes in her books, but this chapter is not my main concern. I just want to make people aware that while this isn’t an explicit book, I certainly cannot call it clean. I’d day a 3-4 steps lower than clean towards the very spicy end of the spectrum. It does have a bedroom scene, so it’s not technically closed door. And while it is limited to describing kisses in bed in that scene, the kissing is not limited to the face (won’t get into details), the people involved are not dressed, and the whole scene is far more descriptive than usual. It makes the whole book more spicy than previous books I’ve read by this author. The whole epilogue is spicier than the rest of the book too with constant innuendo that is almost not innuendo at all.

Fun, hilarious, unable to put down!
I very rarely laugh out loud at books, but this one I could not resist! It was a true feel-good book that I read in a day!
The story is about a girl called Leila, clumsy as they come and who cannot keep a job for longer than a few weeks, she has tried all sorts but nothing sticks. After just being fired again, Leila’s friend Josie phones her in a panic asking for her help. Josie needs Leila to go meet with a client, and just ‘take his measurements’. Sounds easy, Leila thinks, so even without any experience or knowledge Leila agrees. What Josie tell Leila however is that the person she has to meets is famous actor Blaze, the very same movie star that Leila has a massive crush on. When they meet, Blaze is immediately taken with Leila, even though she injures him while trying to take his clothing measurements. Blaze proceeds to invite Leila with him on a worldwide trip to promote his newest film.
Can Leila keep up with the pretence on the press tour?
Can Leila keep her crush on Blaze a secret?
And why did Blaze really invite her on the trip?
The book had everything, I adored it so much! I want to read more about Blaze and Leila.

This book is an absolute delight to read! I found myself laughing out loud while reading this book, so perhaps it would be better to read it while you are at home and not on the bus or on a lunch break at work. Blaze and Leila are characters that you will come to adore. Leila is a bit of a screw up, often involved in mishaps and finds herself frequently fired. A favour for a friend ends up being the job of a lifetime….a personal shopper for a very handsome movie star, Blaze. He knows she is not the personal shopper someone recommended, but something about the mishap prone, quirky and flighty Leila appeals to Blaze. He decides to take her on his international press tour and that is when the real fun begins. Getting to know each other through late night chats, talking about family, and traveling together leads to each discovering they are harbouring unexpected feelings for the other. Who knew that very unorthodox first meeting could lead to a love match? Their path toward a happily ever after does have a few bumps and twists, but I will let you discover those for yourself. Enjoy!

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

A super cute clean and sweet romance.
Leila is the eldest of three sisters. She tries to be someone they can look up to and depend on because their parents are not in the picture. Unfortunately she is a klutz with a capital K. She can't seem to keep a job, no matter what the type of activity is. So when she is fired from her current waitressing gig she feels like she's letting everyone down, especially her beloved sisters.

Leila's best friend asks for a favour: to fill in as a celebrity personal shopper at the last minute for action movie star Blaze. Blaze who is being gently pressured by his best friend to find a woman who he can have a meaningful relationship with instantly connects with Leila who he can tell is not who she seems to be.

Fun plot, playful banter and a sweet romance, this book was really fun to read. I took one star off because Leila's klutziness was a bit off-putting for me at the beginning and was a little too slapstick. That all settled down in the second half and I loved it.

This is a clean read with no descriptive love scenes.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. But there were a few issues. I know this first one is really just my issue, but I have a problem reading stories with names I do not like. For instance, if a book has a MC named Rafe, I will instantly pass, regardless the storyline or the reviews. In this story, I hated almost all the names of the characters. Now aside from that Leila's ranting went from cute to dragging on too often. Keep it short and get to the point but no, there were paragraph that I skimmed over just to find the reason for the ever going long thought. Some situations were not dealt with in private or public and also several times I wondered how this situation or that was really working.

However, although he has a terrible name, Blaze was a great character. He and Lucy really carried the story and made it worth the read. I do love how clumsy Leila is and it offered some outward laughs from me but after awhile, I began to just pity her.

To sum it up, there was too much of what should have been less and too little of where it should have been more.

This book was so much fun. And hilarious. It gave me major Confessions of a Shopaholic vibes. Not because of the shopping but the quirky, unique, totally unabashedly herself woman, that makes the story so funny.
Leila Scott can’t keep a job for the life of her. It’s not for a lack of trying, she just has this awful ability to mess up the simplest of tasks.
I was having flash backs to these stories I used to read as a kid, Amelia Bedelia, a maid that takes everything literally and just fails at everything in the funniest way possible.
Leilas quirks make her endearing and hilarious, and so lovable, I couldn’t help but cheer her on! Then Blaze Hopkins happens and the two of them together are just perfect, it was so much fun seeing their relationship take shape.

And I’m super excited to read Lucy’s story next, she’s blunt and loves Lord if the Rings and video games. I already love her.

Content: clean
Romance: kissing, sleeping in same bed.
Violence: none
Language: none.

This was a fun and unique book! Mix a terrible personal shopper fill in with a famous actor... what could go wrong?

The dynamic between the MCs is so much fun! She's nervous and he's finding every way to get her to fall for him and keep her close. (That sounds creepy.. but it's not.. lol) Leila is soooo clumsy and her words and actions just are so embarassing! But, Blake is super sweet and loves exactly how Leila is.

This book made me grin and want to fight for the underdog. Leila is thrown into this world of harsh judgement and lots of on lookers. Even through all this though, she is so strong! I love how she thinks of what her sisters would say in situations and her deep connection with them. I can't wait to find out what happens next in the series with Lucy!

Content- Closed door with make out scene. Some alcohol use.

Cute and fluffy fun

Leila is a disaster at all the jobs she’s had, not due lack of trying, she’s just not sure what she wants to do.

When her best friend Josie asks her to measure a client for her personal shopper business, she’s clearly not up for the task.

But it’s Blaze, a famous actor, who’s enamoured by the genuine, clumsy, sweet woman, and he invites her on a his promo tour for his new movie.

They go out and see sights, have talks about family and laughs about events in their lives. They then have to face his nasty co-star, the paparazzi, and a few more problems, but they finally get to where they they need to be, together.

Light story with an interesting plot, some parts are skimmed over so things aren’t totally believable, but it’s a fun rainy day book.

(Still Laughing ...) . . .

Humor is the best ingredient you can add to any book (for me anyway), and this one was loaded with it! Leila Scott was a true friend when her bestie Josie asked if she would cover for her on a new job. She accepted without complaint. She was to meet with the wealthy client, take body measurements and note any of his preferences in fashion. Easy enough, right? But she was definitely not expecting Hollywood heart-throb, Blaze Hopkins! T.H.E. Blaze Hopkins! She had a huge crush on the guy.

Since Blaze apparently didn’t know what a personal shopper could provide… or NOT, he asked her to accompany him on a press tour! Global travel, oh yes! Her only requirement is to NOT fall in love. But what if she does?

I get it. Being the oldest sister has a lot of responsibility attached to the title! Especially with a mom who shuts her daughters out and no dad on the scene. But how frustrating for Leila to fail job after job and have unfulfilled dreams of her own. It takes doing a friend a "favor" and going outside her comfort zone to get Leila close to what she dreams about. And creativity combined with raw honesty to make real changes in her life.

I loved the book-the wonderful characters-the sweetness and pure feelings of the characters. It was over too soon, and I want more. Fortunately the author has more coming about the other sisters! I can hardly wait! A delicious read that I recommend wholeheartedly! Grab a copy and enjoy!!!

This is such a cute story. Wasn't really spicy but the romance and the characters were so loveable and sweet. I really like that Blaze was an A list actor but wasn't arrogant and the typical actor. He's kind and down to earth. And I love his reaction to Leila right from the get go. He really didn't know what to do with her. Leila is also a fun and quirky character. She didn't break when Harper was a bitch to her and tried to make her miserable. I love how she figured out what she wanted to do after everything in her life fell apart. And I'm so glad Olly came around and because of Leila, he got to see his daughter and see her happy. Hopefully Olly sticks around in the next book. And I'm so curious on who is Lucy's guy

Leila Scott seems to fail at everything she does, getting fired from job after job, and as she is desperate to help her younger (adult) sisters and be an example to them, she jumps at the chance to cover for her best friend Josie to take measurements for a famous client and work as his personal shopper. However, not only does Josie not know at all doing what, but when the clients turn out to be her Hollywood crush, Blaze Hopkins, she completely messes up the whole thing. But Blaze is enchanted, and hires her to come and be his "personal shopper" on his worldwide press tour in order to get to know her better. However, as attracted as they are to each other, can they figure out how to bridge the gap between them??

Cute story and I enjoyed it. Some swearing, but otherwise clean.

This is book 1 in Burton's new series Surprised by Love. This book is absolutely delightful! I loved these main characters and Burton brings the laughs and the romance. I love the chemistry - steam level on this one! Our main characters are Blaze and Leila - Blaze is a wealthy celeb and Leila is an awesome friend filling in to take measurements and fashion preferences. These two have the best banter. Burton will have you hooked from the very beginning and you will love every moment of it and will be looking forward to more in book 2 of this series - which I totally can't wait for!

So fun!

This was such a cute, fun story! I saw someone recommend it on Instagram and thought it sounded cute! This was my first book by Laura Burton and it won’t be my last!!

Blaze Hopkins has everything—money, fame, and an exciting movie star life! But what he doesn’t have his love and a relationship. Enter Leila Scott posing as a personal shopper for her friend who was in a bind! What follows is a funny, flirty, and adorable movie tour where Blaze and Leila get the chance to fall in love despite the craziness that is Blaze’s life and the clumsiness that is Leila’s!

You’ll love this book from start to finish!

Cute, clean, fun.

Blaze and Leila were fun to get to know and the nicest thing about their story was that it was clean. Laura kept the story moving and interesting without having to resort to sex.
When another character reveals that she's checked online about Leila it was a reminder to be careful concerning what's posted on social media.
While Leila and Blazes story was complete it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger as it segues into sister Lucy's book.
One thing to check on is Blazes eye colour. First they're hazel with yellow flecks, then they're chocolate brown, but a small quibble.
