Policy & Procedure System: A Demystification Guide

Rate this book
Policy and procedure documents are an ongoing mystery to both corporate leaders and end users, and are often convoluted in their complexity. Despite this perception, a policy and procedure structure is a critical enterprise asset. This book seeks to change the status quo by laying out a straightforward and entertaining systems approach regarding this topic. As wildly improbable as it may seem, using the book’s principles will actually rejuvenate these important documents into an asset that leaders and employees will respect!Praise for the First Edition“Systems engineering is the art of decomposing a system from its most complex to its simplest element. It is, therefore, logical to extend this same thinking to crafting a Policy and Procedure structure, which this book addresses, that not only captures the wholeness of the system, but equally as important results in a user-focused set of documents. Nothing is as fundamental in today's competitive environment as consistent and repeatable process outcomes. The only way to achieve that on an ongoing basis is through a structured, deconflicted set of business rules that employees follow religiously.”– Bruce King, Sr VP Operations (retired), Rockwell Collins“Having worked at various sized companies over the last 35 years, ranging from 10’s to 10,000’s employees, I have witnessed many mesmerizing ways for handling policies and procedures. While some were adequate, the majority were catastrophes. This is a book that removes the mysteries on creating a robust system using a principle-based approach for a well-designed structure. This book is an invaluable tool for any size company.”– Kristine Armstrong, President and CEO, iBOSS LLC“Policy & procedure is supposed to enable an organization’s mission. Too often, though, it bats last, and then only in response to new statutory requirements or recent media events. Scott Green’s book helps you restore the ability of policy and procedure to advance organizational objectives. Scott outlines the principles, tips, and practices that make policy and procedure documentation an effective management tool to drive consistency, culture, and, where needed, compliance with industry norms and regulations.”– Greg Forlenza, Sr VP (retired), SAP America, Digital Business Services

Finally! A straightforward book on how to construct a policy & procedure system! The author guides us through a methodical review of business rules vs technical rules to set the stage for the critical process structure that either allows P&P systems to succeed or causes them to fail. Oh good grief, you’re thinking, …how boring is that. On the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised to find the book quite an enjoyable read. The author has ‘been there, seen that’ through various company P&P systems, and the principles of “what not to do” add great value (as well as humor) for the reader.

Mr. Green realistically addresses the challenges of organization structure, the innate engineering/production conflict, change control processes, and how to work within these business constraints. Because -- you can create what you think is a fine P&P system but if the users don’t believe it, and can’t understand and embrace it, it’s worthless.

Wish I had had this book in my previous role where I was responsible for my company's business management system. Highly recommend.
