Ece Temelkuran
32 books558 followersEce Temelkuran, Turkish author, was born in 1973. She is a daily columnist of one of the most popular Turkish newspapers for ten years and a prize winning journalist. Her primary concerns that she addresses are the contemporary criticism of popular culture, masques of politics, women issues, and all other deteriorating identities of humanity. She uses various forms of dramatic sentimentalism and black humor together, combined with her postmodern style, creating space for tactful connections to everyday life. She is the author of three experimental literary fiction books written in the form of poem in prose, and a documentary book on hunger strikes. Lately she published two collections of articles from her column. Temelkuran is the pioneering signature of her generation with opposing voice as a young intellectual, and always brave to tell about “never to talk subjects” of Turkey.
She graduated from Faculty of Law, Ankara University in 1995. She started her journalism studies at Cumhuriyet newspaper in 1993. She worked on women’s movement, Southeast Issue in Turkey and also political detainees. Her first book, “All Women Are Confused “ was published in 1993.She was chosen as the “Journalist of the year” by German government and then she made a research on Women movement in Germany in 1993, the same year when she was chosen as the Journalist of the year.
Her research book “My Son, My Daughter, My State-The Mothers Of Detainees- From Homes To Streets.” Was published in 1997. She was awarded by Office of Doctors since she had a research paper “Virginity Test is A Crime” for Cumhuriyet journal.
Her poem- prose books “From the Edge” and “Voice Of The Inside” were published by Everest. She went to Brazil in 2003 and to India in 2004 to observe World Social Forum. She examined the nation movement after the economic Crisis in Argentina. Her books that include newspaper articles Voice Of The Inside and From Outside were published by Everest in 2005. She took the Idea and Democracy Award by the Office of Doctors in Turkey with her book “We Are Having Revolution Here, Senorita!” (Everest, 2006). She was also awarded by Diyarbakır Democratic Platform with her book “What Should I Tell You?”. Ece Temelkuran, who deserved the award of Freedom for Idea by Ayşenur Zorakolu, keeps writing on her column “From The Edge” at Haberturk newspaper and her latest books “The Deep Mountain” (2008) and “Sounds of Bananas” (2010) are published by Everest.

German: Wille und Würde: Zehn Wege in eine bessere Gegenwart
Turkish political journalist Ece Temelkuran - of How to Lose a Country: The 7 Steps from Democracy to Dictatorship fame - has crafted this book as a tool of self-healing, as a talisman consisting of many small pieces that shall illuminate what's great about the human race. This video perfectly captures the vibe and the depth of analysis in this book.
And guys, I know these last two years have been hellish for a vast number of reasons, but let's not cite this as an excuse to invent a new kind of essay that marries realist social analysis with self-help. If Paulo Coelho decided to do political writing, this would be the outcome - which means there is a market for this, but it's not yours truly, a jaded millennial with a degree in PoliSci.
The German title seems to refer to Schopenhauer's major project Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung (The World as Will and Representation), and the idea of will and how we try to submit our inner representation of the world to it is central to many of Temelkuran's arguments (don't come for me because this short sentence does not encompass the scope of Schopenhauer's four main works, I KNOW). Unfortunately, the text mainly consists of anecdotes and the arguments between them lack rigour.
One example: In the book and in an interview, Temelkuran argues that we need more faith, because "faith (...) is an irrefutable concept. When you believe in something, your actions are shaped by that unshakable stance." - anyone who lived through the era of Trump et al. can easily see how that is a weak or at least undercomplex argument. Just because you're willing to believe something in your own representation of the world, it does not in fact exist, nor should it necessarily. Faith can be dangerous (just read Victor Klemperer's analysis of faith in the "Führer" and how it helped German fascism).
Also, we learn that religion is bad and capitalism is bad. Don't get me wrong: There is A LOT to criticize and deconstruct about religion and capitalism, but that's not what we get in this book. We get platitudes.
So I clearly see that this will appeal to people, but I was just bored and annoyed. Maybe I'm too jaded for this.

Ece Temelkuran sanki okurlarıyla dertleşmek istemiş, kendisinin Zagreb’te kurduğu yeni ve yalnız hayatını hisseden, hayatla ilgili pek çok konuya onunla aynı pencereden bakan insanlara bir dost edası ile ulaşmak istemiş gibi. Sanki “yalnız değiliz” hissini pekiştirmek, “bir” olmak “birlik” olmak için yazılmış bir kitap. Okumuş, aydın, orta direk bir sosyal demokrat olarak kendisinin bu selamını keyifle aldım özümsedim, hislerime tercüman olmuş noktasında kitabı bitirdim.
Bütünüyle birlik beraberlik ve iyi niyetle yazılmış bu hoş seda kitabın maalesef Ece Temelkuran’ın yaratmak isteyeceği etkiyi sağlayacağını düşünmüyorum. Bir devrim, bir ihtilal gerekiyor bizlere, ve ben bu denli hoşgörü ve iyiniyetle bu noktaya gelineceğine inanmıyorum.

This was as moving and as thought-provoking as I expected it to be, having read How to Lose a Country. There is real truth and beauty in this book on just about every page, offered up in stories from the author's life, ruminations and observations of the world and times we live in, that circle around a theme - a choice - in each chapter.

Depois de nos mostrar o que está de errado com o mundo em Como Perder Um País, mostra-nos o que está bem, o lado bom, por vezes esquecido, da humanidade. É um guia prático mas também um livro de memórias, de filosofia, de análise política e histórica, uma coleção de ideias sobre como nos devemos relacionar com os outros, escrito com perspicácia e muito humor. Uma reflexão sobre o tipo de mundo em que queremos viver agora, não amanhã ou depois. Özellikle son bir yıldır sıkça konuştuğumuz, belki konuştukça kendi kendimizi umutsuzluğa sürüklediğimiz her konudan bahsetmiş Ece Temelkuran. En sevdiğim yazarlardan birisi ile bu konuları konuşma şansım olsun çok isterdim ve bu kitabı okuyunca sanki o şansa sahipmişim gibi hissettim. Kitap bana düşünecek çok konu verdi, zaman zaman beni ikilemlerde bıraktı. İlk kez bir kitabı kelimelerin altını çizerek okumak istedim. Bir yandan da uzun zamandır cevaplarını aradığım soruları görünce kana kana içer gibi okudum. O yüzden bir kez daha sindire sindire okuyacağım bir kitap. Ancak önce okuduklarımı düşünmek için biraz zamana ihtiyacım var. İyi ki varsın, iyi ki bu kitabı yazmışsın sevgili Ece Temelkuran.

Intelligent, a well articulated book to make you think.
This isn't a book that preaches, not telling you what to do.
It simply highlights and guides.
I think the author aims to open the readers eyes to other possibilities, allowing them to see certain actions in a different light.
I think perhaps I tried to read it too fast though.
Maybe this is why in my opinion it lacked a real impact, not quite punchy enough, or perhaps I just wasn't who this book was truly aimed at.
Unfortunately it just didn't light a spark in me.
Well written, short and, the idea of ten points to be made makes it snappy. I however came away not quite knowing what I was meant to think or do.
Perhaps a second read is in order.

Tespitlerini, anlatımını ve inadını çok sevdiğim bir yazar. Ancak bu kitap belki de çeviri olması sebebiyle belki de çevirideki eklerde yapılan hatalarla beni zorladı. Yabancı bir dilde kitap yazan yazarların kendi dillerinde yayınlanan kitaplarında neden çevirmen tercih ettiklerini anlayamıyorum. Anlatmak istediklerini kendi dilinde ondan daha iyi kim anlatabilir ki?
Ece Temelkuran elbette tarafı belli olan ve bunu açıkça da dile getiren bir yazar. Corona ve sonrası dünyayı okuma konusunda hala bazı kelimelere olan tutkusu bende çelişki hissi uyandırdı. Ortak bir dil dediğimiz sadece bizim dünya görüşümüze ait kelimelerden ibaret olmamalı, en azından kelimelerde ayrışmamalıyız diye düşünüyorum.

I'm glad I read this. I've definitely gained some insights on how to look at our mad and wondrous world. I think my favourite of Temelkuran's lessons was centering dignity over pride. In her words: ''We only begin to occupy a space as big as a human should when we are no longer shrunken by indignity.'' I never spent much time thinking of dignity as a value or a topic, but I will from now on.

Ece Temelkuran kitabın önsözüne şu cümlelerle başlıyor: "Ben size bu kitabı yazarken Türkiye'nin en güzel kız çocukları beş para etmez adamlar tarafından öldürülmüş, akılalmaz bir utanmazlık iktidarı ve iktidar destekçilerini ele geçirmiş. Hiç de gülünç olmayan palyaçoların rehinleri gibiyiz. Sadece güzel ülkemiz değil, başka ülkeler de aynı dertten mustarip".
10 başlık/bölümden oluşan kitap, her sistem gibi yıkılmakta olan kapitalizm ve onun yardakçısı faşizm karşı nasıl "Hep Beraber" mücadele etmemiz gerektiğine ışık tutuyor.

Radikal zamanlarinda severek takip ettigim bir kose yazariyken yurtdisi gunlerinde pek kendisini takip edememistim. Bu kitap sanki kose yazilarindan olusan ve kacirdigim hic yazilmamis o yazilarini yakalamam icin derlenmis bir kitap gibi. Guzel bir tonu var ve ne asiri iyimser ne de ic daglayici kotumser. Sanki okuyucudan once yazarin kendisine yazdigi bir pozitif ol pes etme telkini gibi. Asiri doyurucu degil ancak keyifli ve okurken az da olsa umut etmenizi sagliyor.

Ece Temelkuran’ın günümüz olaylarını değerlendirirken modern dünyanın sinyallerini hep doğru yorumlayan ve insancıl tavrı takdir edilesi bir özellik bence. Bu kitabındaki yazılarda da aynı üslup devam ediyor, hatta da kitapta yazarın yıllar öncesinde okuduğum ilk kitaplarındaki tadı bulmak benim için gayet güzel bir duyguydu. Fakat bu güzel duyguyu kıran ve kitap için olumsuz değerlendirme yapacağım yegane husus Ece Temelkuran’ın günümüz problemlerini anlatırken hala on - on beş yıl önceki Türkiye örneklerini veriyor olması. Kendisi bir süredir memleketinde değil ama geleceğe seslenmek isteyen bir yazarın hala eski yaralara bağlı kalması ve onları hatırladığını tekrar tekrar vurgulaması bana büyük bir saplantıya sahip olduğu izlenimini bırakıyor bende.
Kitapta altı çizilebilecek bir sürü söz var fakat benim için en dikkate değer olanı “Kapitalizm mutsuzlukla çalışan bir makinedir.” sözü oldu. Kapitalizmden bu kadar şikayet ediyorsak eğer onun mutsuzluğa neden olan kısımlarına takılmadan umudu körükleyecek yeni yarınlara odaklanmak yapılacak tek şey olmalı. Eğer sınırları ortadan kaldıran yeni kuşağı ve onların bu makineyi değiştirme umudunu vurguluyorsak eski yaraları söylemekten öte şeylere de ihtiyacımız var.

What are these choises Ece suggests: to choose faith over hope, dignity over pride, attention over anger, strength over power, enough over less, reef over the wrect, the whole reality, to befriend with fear, friendship and last but not the least to be together...

A wonderful book. Temelkuran’s observes that the economic and political system we have built has reached it limits and threatens to drag us all down with it as it falls. This has produced a merry-go-round of fear, she says, and the feeling that we are living through the most damned period of history.
'Together' is “a talisman” for the comfortable classes with a troubled conscience who are feeling overwhelmed by the problems of the world. Don’t be afraid, don’t be fatalistic, she says, but you’ll have to give up being comfortable.

This one is impossible to review.
At some points I felt intense joy and deep commitment and focus on the message and the references, at some points I drifted off and had no clue what she was talking about.
Still, interesting and cool and good, but-a, something that I maybe didn't truly understand at all.
A good message that I highly agree with.

At some points I felt intense joy and deep commitment and focus on the message and the references, at some points I drifted off and had no clue what she was talking about.
Still, interesting and cool and good, but-a, something that I maybe didn't truly understand at all.

A brave and in some places provocative book. I didn't agree with everything she said but I could see she's lived through a lot and is someone i should listen to. I am willing to deeply reflect on a lot of what she said and find a sort of gritty hope (hopefully also motivation) in it.
Toward the end it becomes more unarguable. She is saying things that need to be said looking for the way through impossible connundrums. A very worthwhile book which should be widely read!

"Together" is a thought-provoking and activist book, presenting ten courageous and feasible choices to address the current crises that threaten our ecology, economy and democracy. Ece Temelkuran, in his characteristic style, combines contemporary cultural critique with dark humour and dramatic sentimentality that challenges the reader to consider new perspectives.
While one can appreciate the boldness and relevance of Temelkuran's proposals for social change, it is also possible to have reservations about his socialist political leanings. However, regardless of political positions, "Together" offers a manifesto of hope and solidarity, a call to action for those committed to reality and willing to take a stand for a better future.
The author takes us on a journey from the neighbourhoods of Istanbul to the bazaars of Russia to conferences in Dublin, showing us that, despite our differences, we are all part of a shared reality. This book is not only a manifesto against a heartless world, but also an invitation to celebrate love and friendship, even in the midst of chaos and darkness.

Un libro diretto e senza remore ma nel contempo pacato e sobrio, come un pensiero stratificato nel tempo e forgiato da esperienze e riflessioni, che diviene naturale (o tale appare dopo molto sforzo di elaborazione e decantazione) e non ha bisogno di proclami per affermarsi nella sua forza determinata, tenace ed essenziale.
Ece Temelkuran pone dieci punti alla nostra attenzione con chiara lucidità e ci invita a guardare in direzioni in cui molti di noi, per cinismo, per le delusioni frequenti del mondo contraddittorio cbe ci troviamo a frequentare, hanno smesso di aspettarsi qualcosa: l'essere umano e la condivisione del vivere insieme.
Un appello a noi stessi: a fermarci, come siamo stati costretti a fermarci nel 2020, e a chiederci come vogliamo tornare a stare insieme, come atto politico e sociale eversivo e fondativo della dinamica umana.
Un libro adatto al periodo della fine e inizio di anno, ancor più in questi mesi di continui stravolgimenti geopolitici ed economici.

After having heard the author speak at a recent event, I was hoping her writing would be as insightful and eloquent as she was that evening. I was not disappointed.
While this is not a book to convert those that still hadn't realised that this is the time to get off your butts and fight fascism (for this, there's her previous book "How to Loose a Country"), her powerful message written in beautiful prose is what I think a lot of so-called progressives should hear to get them to again believe in something, like community or mutual - aid. Because if we want a chance to fight off dictatorship or the disruptions that runaway climate change will cause, we will need to do it together.
We live in strange times and the author has unfortunately been at the receiving end of many fascist plots. It's therefore a real blessing she can still write with such beauty and conviction and can practice active hope that hopefully she can infect many more people with.

Ece Temelkuran yine güçlü kimliğinden ayıkladığı kelimeleri en samimi adımlarla dans ettiriyor. Bu kez unuttuğumuz “insanlık anları” için. Özellikle “gurur yerine onuru seç” bölümünü okumanızı tavsiye ederim. Aklımıza getirmediğimiz hatta kalbimizde saklı olduğunu bile fark etmediğimiz, boğazımızda düğümlenen “onur”un varlığıyla yüz yüze gelince kısa süreli de olsa bir aydınlanma yaşayabilirsiniz.
“Şiddet ve baskıyla beslenen, onları kendine dayanak yapan bu yeni faşizm insanlardaki kara maddeyi zorla canlandırdığında, sözcüklerin en eskisini, soykırımlardan ve dünya savaşlarından sağ çıkmış bir sözcüğü desteklemek için yeni bir ihtiyaç doğacak: sevgi. Sözcüğün bolca rastlanan sığ ifadeleri değil, hakiki ve kararlı bir insan sevgisidir bu. İnsanlık tarihinin tüm belalarından sağ çıkan bu sözcük şimdi bizim elimizde ölemez!”

Temelkuran'dan Hepberaber'lik üzerine 10 emir... Methiyeleri görünce okuma listeme almıştım. Şikayetçi olduğumuz düzenin içinde olan bizler, çoğu zaman kendimizi motive etmek için kitaplardan medet umuyoruz. Hepberaber olmazsak düzenin kölesi politikacılardan ve onların şakşakçılarından kurtulmamız elbet mümkün olmayacak, ama bu kurtuluş bu tip kitaplarla hiç olmayacak. Maalesef hiç heyecanlanamadım...
