When I planned a cross-country road trip to my new duty station, I never expected to have a gorgeous runaway bride and her brilliant thirteen-year-old along for the ride.
A family friend needs me to save her niece from a bad situation, so she begs me to bring her and her daughter across the country with me.
I’m already headed that way, so it doesn’t seem like a big deal.
Of course, I’m regretting it within the first ten minutes.
Experience has taught me the bright side is nothing but a distraction from the truth, and despite everything they’ve been through, these two can see the bright side of anything from a mile away.
But as the miles go on, Nikki’s starting to worm her way under my skin and into my heart.
Every time she giggles at my cynical jokes or launches us into a detour I never knew I needed, I fall even harder.
And her daughter?
She’s way cooler than she gives herself credit for, and the need to encourage her to be herself becomes shockingly important to me.
One week.
It was only supposed to be one little week that I’d be trapped in a car with this mother-daughter bundle of sunshine.
But the closer we get to our final destination, the slower I find myself driving.
Because maybe she’s right.
Maybe it is all about the journey.
And if so, I don’t want this one to end.

Amazing of course! I can’t believe that this series has come to an end, but this was a wonderful end to this lovely series. The Runaway is the sixth and final book in Jess Mastorakos’ Brides of Beaufort series. I have been getting more and more excited for this book and it was even better than I had hoped! I read it in one day! Nikki had a lot of things to work through but she was so still strong and considerate. Nikki had her daughter to consider and she was just trying her best. I loved how Nikki tried to see the best of things but how she could be herself with Nate. Nikki had to learn to let others in and to fight for what she wanted. Nate was a grump but he was a sweetheart on the inside. He was trying to work through the break up of his on again off again girlfriend, never expecting a road trip to change his life. I really liked Nate and his character. He was kind and considerate and he did his best to help Nikki and Marigold. Nate had to learn to believe that things could get better. Nikki and Nate were such a cute couple together. They really balanced each other out and helped the other person be better. I really liked their relationship and reading about them falling in love. It was fun to read about the progression of their relationship. Marigold was a lot of fun! I adored her relationship with Nate. He was just so sweet with her. Let me say, I was also so excited to see some old characters. There were some awesome scenes with the characters and I loved it! I also saw hints of a new series. The Runaway needs to be on your TBR, I could not recommend it enough! The Runaway is a clean contemporary romance with a grumpy and sunshine trope
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
This might be my favorite of the series and I didn't think that was possible considering how good the other books are. The runaway aspect, road trip, snarky (but loveable) teen, danger element, and swoony romance kept me turning the pages. I also really enjoyed seeing others from pass books/series. Jess Mastorakos has an awesome world and the easter eggs of other people are so fun to spot.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. My review was not required nor influenced.
Another romance with all the feels! This author is amazing at making each of her book’s characters interesting, likable and unique! The road trip adventure was a lot of fun and the teenage sass added another dynamic. If you enjoy clean sweet romance and you have not read Jess Mastorakos yet I encourage you to check out her books!
Oh my heart! Where do I even begin to tell you how much I loved this book?! First. This book is absolute perfection! Second. This book is absolute perfection! Third. Did I mention this book is absolute perfection?! Well, in my opinion, it is! Gah! You guys! This is the kind of book I have been craving all year! They have been few and far between for me so I found myself treasuring every single moment of this epic cross-country road trip!
To say that opposites attract would be an understatement when it comes to Nikki and Nate. She's Little Miss Sunshine, he's Mr. Grumpy. She's spontaneous, he's all about plans. She's got all the words, he's a man of very few words. She's outgoing, he's reserved. One would probably think that these two wouldn't work, but they would be wrong. Their journey from strangers, to friends, to happily ever after helped them discover that perfect balance that is needed in a relationship. And oh what a beautiful journey it was! I never wanted their book to end. It was phenomenal! 😍
It would be remiss of me if I didn't tell you how much I also adored Marigold. Y'all. That kid stole my heart the moment she mentioned she's all about "murder and mayhem... not trashy reality shows with all the people looking for love in mansions and on islands". I'll take The First 48 over reality TV any day of the week. Unless it's On Patrol: Live. That is definitely a reality show that I watch every single week! 😂 But in all seriousness, this story wouldn't have been complete without Mari. Between her slang, her witty comebacks, her protective nature, and her unconditional love for her mom, I couldn't help but fall in love with her. She made the journey even better being at Nate and Nikki's side. Have I already mentioned that this book is perfection?
Beaufort has quickly become one of my favorite places filled with several of my favorite couples. I loved seeing and catching up with every single one of them. I also loved the surprise appearances from others. They had this girl doing a happy dance in her chair and clapping her hands. It was seriously the best! Oh! And that epilogue! Y'all! 😂😍 That is all.
While I'm sad to be leaving Beaufort, I don't think this is goodbye. How can it be when Brett still needs his HEA? I cannot wait to see what Ms. Mastorakos has in store for him! Y'all. I have a feeling it's going to be another epic love story. And. I. Can. Not. Wait!
As for my casting... *dreamy sigh* What do you think?!
The Runaway made for a wonderful series finale book. It was so much fun! While I'm sad to see yet another fantastic series end, I'm excited to see where we'll end up next in the world of these Marines. Hopefully we'll get to see some glimpses of at least some of these Brides of Beaufort couples again (as Jess Mastorakos is known to do and which I love)!
I loved the dynamics between grumpy Nate and sunshiney Nikki. And talk about a meet cute. Rolling up to a wedding venue at the request of an old family friend to find a woman standing in a huge wedding dress. Oh yeah, and that family friend is asking you to be the getaway driver but you can't ask a bunch of questions in front of the woman's teenage daughter, who's also coming for a ride. No wonder Nate starts off grumpy. But things definitely begin to defrost and shift as they make stops along their cross country road trip and both Nate and Nikki begin to open up to each other. Then there is also an interesting underlying tension as Nikki worries about the past catching up to her (no spoilers!).
I mean, pretty much any book I read by this author is an automatic 5 stars for me. Of course I still read it before giving it the rating, but I'm never disappointed. Seriously, you can pick up any of Jess Mastorakos's books and just melt with adorableness. In The Runaway, I was so excited to see some familiar faces pop up! There were actually quite a few call backs to previous series which had me fangirling. And I felt like I could see hints of possible future stories perhaps? But don't worry, if you haven't read any of the other series yet, though I recommend them, I don't feel you'd be lost. These would just simply be side characters you meet along the way. Just like Nikki did.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
This is the final instalment in this series, which I have to say, I have really enjoy! Its a bit sad that this series reach the end, but I have enjoyed every minute of reading all of this books! This one, is so emotional too and really funny! I love Nate and Nikki and the idea of the road trip has been amazing. Jess is one of my favorites authors and I recommend reading this beautiful series and the rest of her books.
ARC review. The Runaway which is the last book in Jess Mastorakos’ series, Brides of Beaufort, is in my opinion the best in the series. I loved it! The characters grew on me from the first page. Nikki and Nate were the perfect “opposites attract” couple, but the supporting characters especially Marigold blew me away and kept me smiling. And of course it wouldn’t be a Brides of Beaufort book without Aunt Hattie., literally! The road-trip and Chet suspense kept me turning the pages until past midnight. As usual I couldn’t put one of Jess Mastorakos’ books down until the last page.
I did not want this series to end; the author has brought us another group of characters who will stick with us. And show up in future books. I enjoyed every book. I loved Nate and Nikki, their road trip, the laughs, and a hint of danger.
I look forward to our next series, where we will be, whom we will meet, and the friends who will show up.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
This was a fun ending to the Brides of Beaufort, with nods to Jess Mastorakos's other Marine series. This could be read as a standalone, but would be enjoyed much more after reading at least the other Brides of Beaufort books. I stayed up way too late to finish this, but I really enjoyed the characters, especially Marigold! She takes teen lingo to a whole new level! Aunt Hattie's meddling, a constant through this series, was great. This was a sweet read, I'd rate PG for kissing and minor peril/violence.
A sweet grumpy x sunshine, road trip, and single mum romance. While things felt a smidgen rushed for my personal taste, I enjoyed reading about Nate and Nikki.
THE RUNAWAY is a standalone read with a happy ending. It is a sweet, clean read so any age can read and enjoy from teen to granny. It is set on a cross country road trip from California to North Carolina. Nate has received orders and he is driving across country with plans to stop and visit friends and former crew members. Hattie, a friend from N.C. has asked him to pick up a piece of furniture and take it to her home in N.C. She is currently in California to attend a wedding. Nate has the room and he would do anything for Hattie so he arranges to pick up the dresser. He has moved out and he is ready to start his trip when he gets a phone call from Hattie asking him to come by the wedding venue to pick up something. He needs to get there ASAP. He changes his plans and takes off for the venue. As he is driving up he spots Hattie out front with a bride in a huge wedding dress and a teen girl standing with her. As he drives up Hattie opens the door and pushes the two females in his SUV. She tells him to GO. He does. Now he is starting a trip across country with two females that have nothing but what they are wearing. No phone, no purses, no clothes, nothing. They head for the freeway out of town.
The man Nikki was about to marry was not the man she thought he was. She heard him on the phone saying as soon as the ceremony was over he was sending her teenage daughter to boarding school, was taking her so far away no one would ever find her and he would be splitting her money with the person on the phone. She knew he was talking to her ex husband. One she help put in prison. She had to get away and get away in a hurry. She called Hattie and Hattie called Nate and she made a getaway.
They would be riding with him to N.C. He was a Marine, he could make this work. This is a fun adventure the two girls find themselves in the middle of. It takes a matter of a few days for Nikki to discover Nate was really the one for her. This was not an easy ride. Nate was somewhat of a quite man and use to being by himself and doing things his way. It takes a while for him to realize that these two just may be intended for him. It is a sweet, clean love story. Not a smooth ride as danger follows them out of California. It is a good ending to a series. I definitely recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 11/1/2022
This is the last book in this entertainingly, phenomenal series and it didn't disappoint. This is my favorite book of the series, from the interesting way Nate meets Nikki and Marigold. Aunt Hattie gets involved right from the beginning of this one and whenever she's involved things get interesting. Having Nate pick up Nikki and Marigold from her aborted wedding in her atrocious wedding dress is just the beginning of an adventurous road trip.
The way Marigold teases Nate about being an "old man" and his old music is hilarious. The fact that Nate needs a vocabulary lesson to get thru some of his conversations with teenage Marigold brings some true laugh out loud moments. Nate is a planner who likes to stick to his plan but as Nikki and Marigold convince Nate to change his plans for some sightseeing on the way adds to the fun of this story. While at the same time Nikki is dealing with the drama of what she found out regarding the man she was supposed to marry. As they stop to stay with some of Nate's friends on the way makes a nice way to catch up with some of the others in the series.
Once they get to Bluffton let the real drama and angst begins. Oh my Chet the man Nikki was supposed to marry is slimy and icky. When they do meet up again the way he treats and talks to her is cringe worthy. With the help of Nate's buddies Will, Paul, Zac and Beau they deal with the Chet situation. The conversation these gentleman have before going to Nikki's reminds us how good of friends and how supportive these guys are of each other. After the drama with Chet, I loved Nate and Marigold's conversation on the back porch. Nate's a man of few words but how these two ladies change him makes for quire the page turning reader.
Absolutely loved catching up with the other characters in the series. The unexpected news from Paul and Shelby was awesome. The scenes at the girls night were very entertaining. Then how Nate uses Nikki's attitude of if things go wrong you just have to pivot is awesome. Jess Mastorakos has delivered an exciting, awesome read and great way to end the series. Once you start reading this one you won't want to put it down until you finish it. Even if you haven't read the others in this series you don't want to miss out on this one.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT When I planned a cross-country road trip to my new duty station, I never expected to have a gorgeous runaway bride and her brilliant thirteen-year-old along for the ride.
MY TAKE Leave it up to me to start a new series and read the last book first. lol It's all right since the books are standalones and while you can tell the side characters have stories, those are handled well. I've read other books by Mastorakos and loved them. Having been raised on military bases and then serving myself, I love the military connection and understand the need to move every few years.
Nate is such a good guy. I can't wait to go back and read the earlier books to see him as a side character. For a smart woman, Nikki could be kind dim. After having been in the clutches of a bad and controlling man (her first husband), I was a little surprised she didn't recognize how much her new fiancé was controlling her life. But she'd been single for a long time and her new guy was so "nice" that maybe it was a case of the frog in the slowly heating water.
Fortunately, she overheard a conversation just before the wedding--where the guy she's about to marry is talking to her ex! It was like Nikki had been blind and suddenly she could see. She didn't walk away; she ran. And good for her. Fortunately, her aunt knew someone headed across country.
Poor Nate. He's just been dumped by his girlfriend. Again. And the woman had been doing it to him for a decade! So he wasn't exactly sharp when it came to women either. He agrees to take Nikki and her daughter with him, but he's resentful at first, still stinging from his own pain and feeling for the guy she's left at the altar.
But that changes as they get to know each other over the road trip and its many diversions. By the time they reach their destination...
But you'll have to RAFL (read and find out). But it's totally swoonworthy!
The Runaway is the fifth and final book of the Brides of Beaufort series by Jess Mastorakos. Nate Bristol is getting ready to travel cross-country to his new duty station in Beaufort, he has a tight schedule. He never expected to have travel companions. When Ms. Hattie asks Nate for a favor, no questions asked, he finds himself aiding in the escape of Nikki, a runaway bride, and her teenage daughter, Marigold. She is the ultimate sunshine and is determined to see the bright side of anything and make the most of the turn of events. Nate is the ultimate grump and as the miles tick by, Nikki and Marigold worm their way under his skin and he learns to roll with the punches. As they get closer to their destination, the slower he finds himself driving. Will they be able to say goodbye once they reach their destination? I have loved this series and it was sad to see it end. The Runaway is a grumpy-sunshine military romance. Nate and Nikki’s story was sweet with lots of laughs and drama. I loved how Nikki slowly chipped away at Nate’s gruff demeanor. There is a bit of suspense and a nail biting scene with Nate coming to the rescue. I even enjoyed Marigold’s character and as a mom of a teen myself, I appreciated that Ms. Mastorakos got the teenage slang accurate. I loved Nate’s reaction to the slang. It reminded me of my husband’s reaction to the slang when our teenager and her friends use it. When Nikki and Marigold are in danger, I loved how Nate and his fellow Marines jump into action. Overall, I enjoyed this story and the series. If you haven’t read the Brides of Beaufort, I highly recommend it. I highly recommend The Runaway.
Well we all know how much I love Jess Mastorakos and all of her books. So of course I have been not-so-patiently waiting for this book. And of course, I absolutely loved it.
The Runaway is the 6th (and final 😦 ) book in the Brides of Beaufort series. I loved that this book included more than just romance. I really enjoyed the small element of suspense Jess wove into the story.
My absolute favourite part of this book (besides the romance) was seeing and hearing about some of my favourite characters from Jess’ other books. It was so much fun to see Spencer and Ellie, Cat and Brooks, Huck, and of course the other characters from the Brides of Beaufort series. There were so many other fun Easter eggs for those who have read her other books.
Yes, I would say this book is more insta-love than Jess’ other books, but there was also so much depth to the characters that it actually made sense. What both Nate and Nikki had experienced in the past led both of them to the point of falling very quickly.
This insta-love however, does not mean an easy story. I loved how there was always something to new to see in the story. I never got bored.
I am sad that this is the end of the series, but I can’t wait to see what comes next. You definitely want to read this book, and all of Jess’ other books.
This was a great ending to the series. It wrapped up all the different storylines and gave a little update on a lot of couples from this series, as well as other series. I enjoyed getting to see some of them again.
This story started out in whirlwind. Instantly, I fell in love with the characters and liked getting to know them better through their crazy road trip. I felt like this book felt completely different from the other books in the serious, maybe that is due to the plot, but it worked really well for these characters. I couldn't really imagine them in any other setting, I don't think it would have been as fun.
I loved their personalities and the way they were balanced out. They were so cute together. I really connected to them, and got so involved in their story. I felt the ups and downs and was rooting for them the whole time.
The story was amazing, it was a fast read, filled with a lot of heart. I definitely am a little sad to see this series go, but I am looking forward to whatever is coming next.
I was given an ARC of this book for free, and I voluntarily left this honest review.
The Runaway is the final book in Jess’ Beaufort series and it’s great! This is Nate Bristol’s story and he isn’t having a good day. He is on his way from CA to SC to his new base and orders. He got the change wanting to be closer to his girlfriend, unfortunately she dumped him. Now ready for the trip cross country he ends up taking runaway bride Nikki and her teenage daughter Marigold with him. Nikki discovered that her fiancé was not the man she thought he was so she left on the day of her wedding. When they first meet Nikki and Nate seem to be totally opposite but as the trip across country continues, we see that they are perfect together. Throw in Nikki’s teen daughter Marigold who leaves Nate baffled with her “teen” language they are growing closer. Their trip across country is an absolute blast to watch unfold!
I have absolutely ADORED this series from Jess Mastorakos! And I am so sad to see it come to an end. I have to say though, Jess hit it out of the park with this final book! (And I use that expression because I'm sure it is one that our hero Nate would understand!)
Nate & Nikki's romance made for such a fun, adventurous novel. I loved their banter and how they each push the other in different ways to get the most out of life. Nikki's daughter, Marigold, was also a fun addition to the dynamic and events that occurred during their road trip.
I loved all of the references, oldies music, TV shows, tourist stops and more that Jess included during the cross country road trip. It made the novel so relatable and definitely made me eager to plan a road trip of my own!
Jess has a real gift for crafting fun, swoony romances and I cannot wait to see what she writes next!
So very many things to love about this book from the wonderfully close relationship between Nikki and Marigold to the slow reveal of Nate’s warm, protective side! I’m just sorry I can’t give this 10 ⭐️!
I had to check in with my 13 year old expert on current slang or I would have been as lost as Nate was! You can feel and see them grow as a family unit before they ever reach North Carolina, and perhaps that’s the most satisfying thing. Although Nate being the strong, silent, dependable and smoking hot type doesn’t hurt a bit! Nikki rolls with the punches unbelievably well, better than many would I would say.
Always a treat to have a visit from Hattie, and thank goodness for her help in both Nikki escaping and matchmaking. I’m just not ready to PCS to another duty assignment from Beaufort! We met several Marines along the way that I’m hoping make the transfer with us.
Nate is transferring back home and is ready for his road trip when he gets a Dear John phone call from his on again off again girlfriend. Quite ticked off he then gets a phone call from Aunt Hattie asking him to pick up a piece of furniture to move it back to Beaufort also. When he's just about to hit the road he gets another phone call for help, this time to take a runaway bride and her teen daughter to Beaufort also. Nate is not happy about this but agrees. The trip becomes very interesting as it continues to go off track from Nate's plans but they all get to know each other better and better. Nikki finally explains the reason she is running and the potential danger they are in. When trouble catches up with her and her daughter will Nate really be able to protect her or will his hurt feelings get in the way?
The Runaway is the sixth and final book in the Brides of Beaufort Series. This story features Nate who is leaving on a road trip from California to his new duty station in South Carolina. He is asked to take runaway bride Nikki and her teen daughter Marigold with him. Nate is a typical hunky Marine who is very OCD with his schedule. He is growly and quite a grump but Nikki and her daughter introduce fun into his trip. Once he realizes his stowaways are in danger, the hunky marine turns into Mr. Protective. Throughout the road trip we are re-introduced to some of the former Marines from Jess’ previous series. This book was a fun read and an awesome end to this series. Looking forward to whatever she writes next.
I haven't read many road trip stories so this was an enjoyable break from the usual. There was a lot of personal growth for all three... Grumpy Nate, Sunshine Nikki and young teen Marigold as well as a sweet happily-ever-after for those three plus others from other books.
I always enjoy the Marine discipline and loyalty Jess Mastorakos details so well.
I'm sorry this is the end of Brides of Beaufort but am also looking forward to the next series.
This is a clean romance with some mild suspense and brief moments of abuse quickly resolved, but nothing that should keep all interested ages from reading this story.
I was given an ARC of this book from the author but this review is my honest opinion, given voluntarily.
Nate and Nikki have a great story. When Nate packs up to move cross country he didn’t count on being dumped by his girlfriend. Nor did he plan on having to do an errand for Mrs Hattie. She is at her neice Nikki’s wedding in California and wants him to transport a piece of furniture she would like to use in the flower shop. What else could happen to delay his trip? How about a runaway bride with her teenage daughter? Nikki learns some unsettling news about her fiancé just before she is to walk down the aisle. When Aunt Hattie puts her in a car with a strange man, she has to trust that he is safe for both her and her daughter. Is this a trip waiting for disaster to happen?
Nate is being transferred to his new duty station from California to Beaufort, NC. He is driving and was not planning on being duped into taking a bride, Nikki and her daughter with him. She put her ex-husband in jail and he is not going to leave it go. The groom is overheard on a phone call the leads her to have second thoughts about marrying him. He is the ultimate Mr. Grumpy and a planner; big surprise she kind of flies from the seat of her pants He loosens up and they are all off for an adventure. There are some interesting surprises on the way. Well written and the end of this very enjoyable series. Can’t wait to see what’s next!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
What a beautiful end to the series! I loved catching up with old friends (all the way back to the SD Marines series!) as well as getting updates on the couples in this series! I love how the author writes in a way where if you've read all of her books little "Easter eggs" from previous series pop up, but at the same time as a new reader you wouldn't be confused.
Nate is grumpy, Nikki is Mrs. Sunshine and always looking for the bright side. Nate is a planner, Nikki dives in head first. The Runaway is a beautiful example of opposites attract, and that even when you think you are avoiding love for a while, it can still come up to bite you. Well done!
This was great binge read and amazing book to finish out the series. I love how all of the previous characters all had significant parts in this book! I enjoy a good road trip, so it was easy to follow along and see how Nate changed/opened up little by little on his unexpected cross-country trip with Nikki and Magi along. They met under a very stressful and uncanny situation but came out happier than either imagined. I adored being able to see how Nikki’s daughter accepted Nate. Sweet Miss Hattie was putting her matchmaking to the works yet again, and she nailed it! Things don’t always go as we plan but work out in the end.
On her wedding day, Nikki hears her fiancé talking to her abusive ex like he knows him well. And he’s saying things that put a chill into her heart. What to do? When she approaches her beloved Aunt Hattie, who’s in town for the wedding, her aunt puts Nikki and her daughter into the car Nate is driving cross-country.
Everyone’s Aunt Hattie asks Nate to transport a large piece of furniture for her cross-country since he’s going that way anyway. Then she asks him to take a runaway bride and her daughter with him too. All will be explained later. Little does he know that the two of them will change his life forever.
I adored every word of this story! I'm bummed to see the series come to an end, but hopefully we'll still get glimpses in the future since the author writes all marines, and there have been overlaps woth other series. The first kiss scene was so sweet, the ending was perfect. I loved how all the mentions and appearances from characters thru the series were involved. I have read them all before, so I was familiar. Trying to be objective, the author does a good job of keeping you up to speed, and my opinion, only makes you want to read all of the other books. This was a great series ender for sure.
I really enjoyed Nate, Nikki and Marigold's road-trip-to-love romance story. Nate was another wonderful Marine character with all the protective and perceptive traits every girl wants, and Nikki a breath of fresh air despite the truckloads of baggage she carried from her previous relationships. And Marigold? She shared many similar traits to my teenaged daughters. 🙊🤣
I particularly appreciated revisiting "the gang". It's always nice to see where a couple ends up after their "happy ending".
Are we going to see Brett and Anabelle together sometime soon? Please?
How could she fall for a scammer and not find out until her wedding day? Nikki overhears her groom to be and realizes he's in a plan with her ex that is in prison, how did that happen? No time to think about it- she has to get her and her daughter out of there NOW. Her aunt has her hitch a ride across country with a handsome Marine. That Marine's girlfriend has just dumped him again that morning, does he really need this complication? Nate finds traveling across country with Nikki and her 13 year old daughter quite the challenge. Will he get her there safe as he promised to do or give up and dump her on the side of the road?
