To date, Okawa’s books have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and been translated into 31 languages. Happy Science has grown rapidly from its beginnings in Japan to a worldwide organization. The spiritual workshops Happy Science offers are open to people of all faiths and walks of life and are rooted in the same simple principles of happiness that inspired Okawa’s own spiritual awakening. When I saw this title was available for reviewing I just clicked. The title sounded like something I would really want to work on: having a strong mind. I have read about procrastination, anxiety, stress, habit building and such, so I was really into this one, but it wasn't exactly what I expected it to be.
In the first chapter, it introduces us to the idea that every 10 years we are faced with a life crisis, the following chapters focus each one on a different subject: "inner maturity", "inner richness" and finally "the power of a strong mind". It is a highly anecdotal book, from the point of view of Ryuho Okawa, founder of Happy Science (a new religious and spiritual movement, according to Wikipedia). This is a book not based on research, it feels more like listening to someone's advice on life, founded by his own believes and experiences. Most of the time the examples are too specific, meant for a Japanese way of life (with couple of them having extra explanations as footnotes) and more aimed at adults in their 40's or older than to any other demographics.
All in all, this was not a self-help book meant for me: it is not scientific, I can't relate to the examples and I disagree in more than one aspect. As an anecdotal type of book, it is inspirational, interesting and with some words of wisdom, but I wouldn't add it to my bookshelf as a self-help book for building inner strength. If you are interested (or belong to) Happy Science, this book can be a great addition because it is easy and fast to read and it contains a lot of anecdotes, specially about Ryuho Okawa’s father.
I'm going to chalk up the bulk of my dislike of this book to cultural differences and being in the wrong age demographic. There were tons of "yikes" examples and other "I can't believe you went there" stuff. The chapters were short and choppy but well spaced making it easy to read even if the content missed the mark of what the title promised.
I was deeply disappointed in this title. Concepts were vague, over-simplified, largely unexplored and stereotypical. I don't think that there is anything new here.
The Strong Mind: The Art of Building the Inner Strength to Overcome Life’s Difficulties is a self help book which is beautifully written.
As a reader, I have limited self help books but when I found this book from Ryuho Okawa, I could not resist it. This book is a reminder of a lot of insecurities we have developed as humans.
The book is divided into five sections: 1. Building Resilience against life crises 2. Living with a stout heart 3. Cultivating Inner Maturity 4. Developing Inner Richness 5. The Power of the strong mind
This book starts talking about how our life is in 20s , 30s, 40s, 50s ..and so on. Talking about the fear within, I found this book talking to me.
"Being content with What You Have is the Key to Happiness." We are in a rat race and each day is competitive but as I started the difference between living and competing for success, I found myself aligned to peace. One of the chapters state -"We can't have everything we want in life, so we should develop a mindset of being content with moderate success."
What I loved about this book is it's simplicity and straight forwardness to make oneself align to peace.
Recently, I encountered few incidents on Instagram itself, which made me realise that blaming others is not a solution. But, realizing when to stop is. Each chapter is full of wisdom and if you are lucky enough to understand it, you might be a different person when you complete reading this one. Lastly, I am in owe of the beautiful cover of this book.
Thank you @Jaico for this lovely book. Keeping it close to the heart, coz sometimes all you have is Self-Help.
QOTD: Is there any particular self help book which has helped you the most?
Some chapters offer great advice on how to make my mind strong and resilient and also really good beginning with the overview of how our lives look every decade in terms of responsibilities and stages e.g. in 30s, 40s, 50s and so on however I failed to resonate with majority of the other chapters fully.
I thoroughly enjoyed the insights of this book. It brought in some unique views, to include cultural things I wasn’t aware of. Sadly I had many distractions so that made it hard to follow sometimes, but on the positive, I get to read it again. I likely would have anyway. Now I have an added excuse.
Reading this gives me lots to think about and points in some helpful directions. For someone going through some challenging times mentally or emotionally, maybe at the beginning of hardship, this would be a good read.
