This book chronicles my 16 year old daughter and my family's journey during her fight against anorexia. During this time she almost lost her life many times, and we found ourselves in situations we never imagined. There were so many things we were not told, and decisions we wish we had made differently. May no parent ever find themselves in a situation of "not knowing" while fighting this insidious disease ever again.
I came across this book through people who know the author’s family. I, and someone close to me, were deeply struck by the author’s recounting. This person in my life, who is now stable, went through a nearly mirrored experience with their own recovery and their mother’s dedication and support. I thought I knew a fair amount about anorexia, but this valuable book educated me more than I could ever anticipate. Thank you so much Neveen for providing a voice and personal narrative to this terrifying and beyond brutal illness. You and your entire family are inspiring and in many people’s hearts, including those who don’t know you personally.
When Radwan's daughter decided to instigate a 'glow up' in the early stages of the pandemic, she set off on a trajectory none of them could have predicted. For Radwan's family, the pandemic took something of a backseat while they fought to get care for Mariam's worsening eating disorder.
Radwan mostly avoids numbers, which I appreciate. The writing is rather beside the point here—this feels very much like catharsis-writing, written in the thick of things (the crisis was very much not over at the time of writing, or the time of publication) and probably helping Radwan to make sense of the past months and years. Here's hoping that someday soon she and her family will be able to say that the crisis is past.
This is an eye-opening account of a family’s struggle with a tenacious eating disorder. While I think everyone should read it, parents of young and adolescent children will find this book especially enlightening and cautionary. Eating disorders are difficult to understand and seem even more difficult to treat, and I learned a great deal from Radwan’s heart wrenching and compellingly narrated story. Even if you don’t know anyone with an eating disorder, you’ll learn to recognize the unhealthy social influences that exacerbate disorders that distort a young person’s body image and the dangers of propagating them.
I would recommend this book to anyone that knows someone that is struggling with an eating disorder. So little is known of what patients and families go through. This is a first hand account of a mother’s unfailing love to help her daughter at whatever cost. Highly recommend this book!
An extraordinary personal account of a mother’s experiences coping with her daughter’s eating disorder. While a short read in terms of pages, the book packs an emotional wallop. Thank you to Neveen and her daughter Mariam for their bravery in sharing their story.
