"I have cold iron pressed into the soft flesh of my neck, and it does not burn. It doesn't sting, or make me feel dizzy, or even make me cough. It doesn't even hurt.
I know then; my crown will be iron."
Ruari is princess of Fiermont, one of the remaining fragments of the fae empire established by her ancestors after humanity had fled the land they so complately destroyed. In the years since her people rose, however, they have been losing their magic - and falling ill to the iron ruins left behind.
Until Ruari finds her own power, one her people have never known, and begins to wonder.
EDIT 2: I somehow forgot to mention it but the romance here is *chef kiss* it made me realize that friends-to-lovers does deserve rights. EDIT:
First of all, thank you so much, Danielle for sending me your book all the way from the United Kingdom, this kindness won’t go unmentioned.
Irontouched is the first installment of the Irontouched series, where we find Ruari, the crown Princess of Fiermont, who from an ealy age showed an affinity to iron, the very material most of her peers cannot withstand to be around a great amount of time, (despite their apparent lack of magic due to decades of disuse) and her journey to different kingdoms in political visits.
Ruari travels alongside some of her ladies, bringing funny and witty situations. The world setting is enchanting and lovely and whimsical, the prose is delicate and tender without being over sugary.
The characters:
Ruari: Crown Princess Annag Ruari Edelmira, is the only child of High King Saeran and heir to the throne of Fiermont. Almost 25 years old. Ruari is witty, funny, loves drinking and a good time, and has no qualms in throwing hands when someone picks a fight with or insults her ladies aloud. She is determined and sneaky, using her surroundings and situation to fit her necessities as she sees fit. She sounds like a blast to be around in a party.
High King Saeran the sagacious: Ruari’s father, he’s reserved and can I even say shy? He supports his daughter in everything she does or want to do, thou he’s not against voicing his discontent or suggestions to her actions. Ruari looks up to him for his kindness.
Uallach: One of Ruari’s ladies she’s the soothsayer’s daughter and successor. With midnight black stained arms and long ebony hair, she gets called “Moonlight girl” by Ruari, and seems to be uninterested in meeting a man in the future (iykyk). With elegant movements worthy of a cat and a laugh that resembles tiny bells, she’s one of Ruari’s best friends and confident. A true delight to witness.
Emer: Emer is Ruari’s governess, of whom she took care from a very young age and became like a mother to, she’s hard on Ruari because she knows what she can become and strives for her to be the best version of herself Ruari can be.
Ruari’s ladies: Ruari’s other ladies-in-waiting accompany her in her journeys to the continent (Wonder why I mentioned Uallach first 👀🤭), help her choreography dances to impress the other royals and even find love while on the journey. Of all shapes and colors, Tegan, Herlinde, Naylor, Iorwen, Owena and Fionne are that friend group you always wanted to have. (Also kudos to Danielle for including a pronunciation guide)
The Murreanean: the sea folk in alliance with Fiermont and whose Queen is very interested in marrying Ruari’s father despite his continuous rejections, for which Ruari is grateful.
The Vrolk: the northern folk, who is more resistant to iron than most fae folk due to their constant exposition to its tenants from the times of men, they aid Ruari in her missions with iron.
Ceara: Ruari’s horse, who deserves her own mention because of how fabulous and terrifying she is. A fire spitting mare the shade of night that eats meat, Ceara lets no other than Ruari to ride her. And she will let others know she’s not to be messed with.
The plot overall: Lovely, if a bit slow at the beginning (after an explosive prologue) because introductions, the pace takes up after Ruari sets up to visit Murranea, the descriptions are not overwhelming or over the top. The characters have personality and the plot twists are bombs✨ I’m really interested to know what else is there to know about this story and it’s antagonists and relationships.
This book is still in beta readings, therefore there might be a couple of typos as it was published independently. ✨
I was a beta reader a while back, and I fell in love with this book! The world building was just incredible. With every new change in setting, I could see the amount of thought that went into every detail, from the landscapes, to the food, to everyone’s beautiful outfits! There’s a real sense of scale to this world, and it feels like there’s so much to explore in future books.
Ruari was also such a compelling character to read about! From the very first chapter, she established herself as a crafty, store-willed leader. Her diplomatic skills and her ability to adapt to any situation are her strongest assets. However, what I most loved about her was the love she has for everyone around her. She is so fiercely devoted to her family, her ladies in waiting, and her subjects, and that in turn inspires their devotion. Although Ruari was flawed at times, I loved her in spite of - or perhaps because of - her flaws. She was stubborn and selfish at times, but that just made her feel real.
The pacing of this novel feels like a classic epic fantasy - it takes its time, but there’s never a dull moment with all the world building and plot twists. These characters have lived rent-free in my head ever since I read this story, and I would absolutely read a sequel!
