Catherine (Cathy) Hapka has written more than one hundred books for children and adults, as a ghostwriter for series as well as original titles, including the Romantic Comedies Something Borrowed, The Twelve Date of Christmas, and Love on Cue. She lives in Pennsylvania.
Do NOT read this book to your little ones. It is horrible. The mermaid's mother would not help rescue her own daughter, and then she threatens to hurt Sofia's family if she does not find her. I cannot believe I just read this to my little girls.
Being woefully behind in writing my reviews and being even more behind the times when it comes to pop culture-I decided to read Sofia the First while helping the children's selector get caught up with new books. There are also sparkles on the book so it wasn't a hard sell. "oooh, pretty," says Jen.
Sofia is a princess who believes in mermaids even if her father does not. She rescues a mermaid caught in a fishing net and finds her magical amulet can turn her into a mermaid too. Just...go with it. Only problem is, Oona's mom is super determined to blow up the floating palace making the ocean dark but really, it's Sofia's family ship. Evil villains, crazy families that don't listen and a seagull that carries around Clover the rabbit make for an interesting ride and whoa, is that Ariel? Where's Ursula? Ah, well. It's a kids book and a little silly but that's ok. Tho, can I suggest not carrying a rabbit around to attack evil villains in the ocean? Poor thing gonna drown.
My preschooler was so excited to read this book because it had two recognizable Disney characters (Sofia and Ariel), but it was a disappointment. It's clear that this book adapted from a feature length animated show and it does not hold up well in narrative or plot.
I just had to read this 6 times in a row to my 3 year old and I have BEEF with this author.
Talk about a problematic mermaid mom. Emmaline lets her daughter wear an enchanted comb but doesn’t tell her what it does leaving her poor mermaid daughter defenseless when she gets targeted by a sea monster who wants the powers of this comb.
and THEN she sends this mermaid-human hybrid (?) protagonist to rescue her daughter from the sea monster by nightfall or she’ll MURDER HER WHOLE FAMILY! this literal child has no idea what to do and clearly needs help. WHY DOES THE QUEEN OF THE SEA WITH THE POWER OF A MAGICAL TRIDENT NOT RESCUE HER OWN DAMN DAUGHTER?!? —————- 5/26/24 Update: after watching the two part episode series from Princess Sofia (on Disney Plus) that this book is based on, there is in fact some more nuance to the queen sending a literal useless child to rescue her daughter. All you need to know is the queen isn’t a dumb b**** like I originally thought. Everyone else still sucks though.
This book just felt so wrong; it makes an attempt at a lighthearted princess story but it just fails miserably. I absolutely refuse to believe that despite the differences between humans and mermaids, that a mermaid Queen would just threaten to sink a boat containing Sofia's family. Furthermore, said Queen orders Sofia to rescue her daughter or else; no, a mother with all that power would turn the ocean inside out to rescue her child.
The only redeeming quality in this book was the artwork, that was really nice.
I enjoy the story of The Floating Palace, but I was not impressed by this book based on the episode. The illustrations aren't great, and the story is written in a way that distracts from the story as a whole. There were unnecessary differences between the book and the episode that also took away from the story. I was not impressed by this book.
Sofia and her family go on vacation, when Sofia meets a mermaid. The mermaid and Sofia save the mermaid kingdom. The 2 families unite, mermaid and human, becoming friends forever. This book has cute picture and storyline.
Leaves out some information that is in the original tv episode that I think Is rather important but overall a nice little kids book. The ILLUSTRATIONS though 🙌🏻❤️🥰
The book is cute and well made and the story mirrors the show perfectly. Not my favorite to read, but definitely my daughter's favorite. And, well, reading is reading.
I enjoyed reading this story myself and to my child. The pictures are colorful and the font size is larger for younger readers. This book has the "Disney magic" about it: colorful, sweet characters, an imaginary place, and an adventure for the main character who has the chance to good and be a hero/heroine. We were fortunate enough to catch the Sophia the First animated series episode of this same story "The Floating Palace" and the story line is extremely similar.
If you don't have access to the animated series, this book is a great substitute, especially if you're wanting to encourage children to develop good reading skills, and to spend time reading.
We will be looking for other Sophia stories from now on.
This is a short children’s story about working together to solve problems, even when no one else believes you. It follows the hour long television special of the same name, but some key elements from that show are left out. Younger children won’t recognize that so much, and the message is a good one to teach. Ariel is the Disney Princess that makes a special appearance in this book.
The extra 4th star is because my daughter (3) just loves it. The illustrations are fun and entertaining. The story, at face value, is enchanting and fun. Oona is a mermaid, and Sofia's new friend. Her mother, the queen, is not that awesome of a mom in reality and even Sofia's family let her down in this story. But it makes way for learning to work together despite our differences.
Very odd little story. I'm surprised this book has so much mermaid wrath, for a children's picture book based on the Disney Junior tv show. Loved the small cameo of Ariel, though. Also I'm not sure why the sea monster has Cruella de Vil's hairstyle.
