I was there when they found him.

I was just trying to enjoy my honeymoon--the one I was on alone, after my fiancé gave me the Miss Havisham-treatment two hours before the rehearsal dinner.

I wanted to relax. Drink cocktails. Do yoga. Meditate in a mud bath. Maybe “find myself.” Maybe “find someone else.”

What I found was a rich man floating in the bay of the Golden Hibiscus Resort. (Dead, of course.)

And then I found a tangled financial web that proved what my friend Sibyl Whenever money’s involved, you have to watch the [redacted for language].”

This was a fun mystery. I enjoyed getting to know Tessa and the various guests at The Golden Hibiscus Resort and investigating with her; Tessa was relatable and funny. There were the occasional TSTL moments, which I am not a fan of, as well as breaking in several times to get information, which annoys me. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

"Mai Tais & Murder" by Lydia Lane is how you do a cozy cocktail theme book. None of the-cocktails-are-more-important-than-the-mystery. The mystery is ALWAYS more important than the theme and this author gets it. It wouldn't be a cozy MYSTERY book without it.

Tessa is on her honeymoon, without her would have been new husband. When it ditched her at the alter she decided she still deserved the planned and paid for tropical vacation she would have been taking with him after their wedding. While there she makes a few new friends and gets wrapped up in some amateur sleuthing.

I do have to say that it is a new take on a cozy mystery. It seems this series is gearing up to be a permanent vacation style cozy along with the occasional cocktail mentions. Which isn't your typical cozy. I look forward to seeing where this one takes us. Will it be all one main character's perspective or will we be jumping around with different or new characters taking the lead?

Thank you so so much to Net Galley for this arc!

I absolutely adored this book! The characters were fun and believable, and our main character gave off a really cool vibe that made me want to be friends with her.

I think this is such a cute, cozy, comedic mystery. As I was reading it I honestly was thinking that this is the perfect book to be reading on a plane on the way to vacation, or by the pool/on the beach.

This was the perfect summer read to put in between the dark thrillers I am used to. Honestly such a breath of fresh air and I want to read more lighthearted mysteries like this now!

I loved it from cover-to-cover!

I was browsing on my tbr list and the beautiful cover enticed me to go to the beach and escape the cold, windy, NE winter. What a delightful discovery from first-time novelist Lydia Lane. Tessa Tidwell became a jilted bride mere hours before the rehearsal dinner and checked in for her honeymoon stay as planned at Golden Hibiscus Resort but without the groom. A private sailing lesson has a very unexpected discovery for Tessa and her instructor.

The dynamics of 30-year old Tessa meeting thrice-divorced, widowed once, and former model Sibyl in her 60's poolside at the resort was wonderful! Sibyl is a strong, independent woman with a style all her own and is able to give Tessa some life advice that is only learned through time and experience. As Tessa becomes an amateur sleuth, Sibyl becomes an engaging partner and knows just when to take the lead in some investigative situations. The investigations carry the cozy forward in a much more interesting way than amateur sleuths that simply ask questions in their thoughts in quiet moments at home or at work. From fellow resort guests to amateur sleuths to friends, Tessa and Sibyl are a charming and dynamic duo!

The interactions between Jack and Ethan are very entertaining especially with Sibyl's commentary on the sidelines. For a first-time author to provide a twist to the romantic side of the cozy without one of the males in the triangle working in law enforcement mixing up the all too familiar "standard fare" has forever endeared me to the author's writing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the author's unique approach that was so true to her characters. Sibyl would have used the descriptive words in her conversation and for the few times needed, Tessa as POV translates ...
"(here Sibyl used a word that is rarely heard in polite company)."
For those who might enjoy trying "Sibyl's Martini" the recipe follows the last chapter. Just remember, a Martini is to be stirred, not shaken. Stir, stir, stir. p.s. It should come as no surprise that Sibyl even has a special stuffing in her olives.

I've already pre-ordered "Dying for Daiquiris" for release on June 21, 2022.

Ha Ha Ha - Mai Tai's (One of my favorite cocktail's) & Murder - Cozy Murder Mystery at the Golden Hibiscus Resort. Main character Tessa Tidwell shows up to the resort for her honeymoon only she shows up ALONE since she was jilted by her fiancé, Ethan, who got cold feet right before the wedding. Basking in her sorrows, Tessa meets Sybil, an older sophisticated 4 times married martini drinking woman, who becomes Tessa's sidekick sleuth. The two make a very hilarious pair. Things get very interesting when Ethan shows up at the resort trying to get Tessa back, but little does he know that Jack, a fellow tourist is also vying for Tessa's attention.

one murder wasn't enough to investigate, two murders needed to happen to get the juices flowing! and when the murderer is arrested. Was the murderer right under Tessa's nose all along? Or is that what the real murderer wants you to believe? There is no fooling Tessa. She gets to the bottom of it all and reveals the truth of it all.

Hilarious read. After reading book 1 of this series, I automatically purchased book 2 & 3 and thoroughly enjoyed all 3 books.

Apologies for not reviewing sooner! Thank you #Netgalley for my ARC copy of this book

Great read. If there is ever a book 4, I will definitely read it....

2.5…3?

After watching the White Lotus, this book feels like it was trying to answer “so what happens once the rich people die and everyone else goes home??”

It was a fun read for the most part! I love a who-dunnit and the prologue was so ominous that I was hooked from the start. It was fun getting to know all the side characters in this cozy mystery. Having the FMC up in everyone’s business after finding a dead body felt relatable! Unfortunately that’s about the only parts I liked. It got a bit repetitive and predictable towards the end. I found the FMC to be incredibly annoying most of the time. Both of her relationships were felt quite forced? The author really went to town with some of the dialogue, I’ll never be able to look at the word “jilted” again. Not to mention “you’re different than most, you know that?” I physically cringed.

Overall it was kind of fun and cozy, and I might continue?? Thanks NetGalley for the arc!

Tessa Tidwell should be on her honeymoon with her husband, but since he jilted her, Tessa decides to enjoy the trip on her own.
While enjoying the vacation, Tessa meets up with Sybil, a quirky character who drinks martinis any time, and offers life advice to Tessa, even though she's had four husbands already.
While there, Tessa makes friends with an influencer, who praises her free trips, based on her reviews of the resorts she visits. Soon enough, Tessa finds herself wrapped up in a murder investigation, and just when things can't get worse, her ex fiance arrives, determined to win her back.

I always love discovering a new to me author, and I'm happy to say I really liked this book. I read the beginning teaser of the next book, but had to stop, because I knew I would want to spoil anything.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
I look forward to recommending this book to others.

Thank you Netgalley, publishers, and Lydia Lane for gifting me a copy of Mai Tais & Murder in return for my honest review.

3/5 stars

Tessa's Honeymoon did not start off the way she thought it would. Firstly she was stood up the day before the wedding so she is on the trip alone, but also due to the fact that she finds a dead body floating in the bay. Not only that but one of her friends is involved in some way. Can she solve the murder and clear her friend's name or will this really be the worst honeymoon ever?

This book starts off very ominously discussing how the night was a new moon, symbolizing a clean slate and new beginnings but for one person it was an ending. Considering Tessa is on her honeymoon alone she is also trying to clean her slate and start fresh. I did like how the author created a full-circle moment by connecting the new moon at the beginning to the full moon at the end. The book did not lack details. You can tell right off the bat that the author was trying really hard to be witty and quirky, Sometimes it worked, while most times it didn't. Like when Sibyl is introduced to the reader, she tries to make her seem like Samantha from Sex and the City by having her force her way into Tessa's day and telling Tessa her whole life story. But, before Tessa can tell her hers she just needs to finish the next chapter of her book.

I was really hopeful with this book but it was all too forced for me. The concept is good with her being on vacation but it was more unbelievable than other cozys that I have read in the past. This is a great example of a plot-driven book with the characters not being as strong or enjoyable. I would read the second book to see if the characters improve as the series continues.

Thank you @netgalley for this ARC.

Tessa Tidwell is on her honeymoon in Hawaii. A honeymoon for one as her wedding did not happen but she still is on it. She is staying at the Hibiscus Resort but being a jilted bride in a resort filled with happy couples is not the bet but she plans on making the most of it. Tessa ends up on her planned sailing adventure/lesson where she encounters the unexpected. Tessa and her instructor find a body in the ocean.
Back at the resort 30 year old Tess ends up meeting “60” year old Sybil. Sybil is a former model, very strong willed and independent. Sybil and Tessa start to become friend and wise Sybil give Tessa some advice. Tessa ends up becoming an amateur sleuth trying to solve the murder of the guest she found in the ocean. Through this process Tessa starts to become more like her old self and more as she starts to evolve into an empowered woman.

What lessons will Tessa learn and will she be able to solve the murder. This was such a fun book to read that I bought it along with the other two books in the series.

I loved this book! I read most of this on the beach and finished it up when I got home from vacation. Tessa Tidwell was jilted by Ethan just before their rehearsal dinner. She decides to go on their two-week honeymoon to Hawaii on her own (which I loved—you take that vacation, girl!). Shortly after arriving, she and a resort employee find the body of a guest in the ocean. Tessa had met the guest just after she arrived and, having found his body, she feels connected to the murder. Soon after, she meets Sybil, a several times divorced older woman who is HILARIOUS. She’s full of advice both wise and terrible. Together, they investigate the murder.
I highly recommend checking this book out. It is so funny but the author also does a good job of connecting the reader to Tessa’s emotions, of which there are a lot because she was dumped the day before her wedding. The characters are amazing. You want to punch several of them over the course of the book and hug others. I also liked the way the mystery unfolded. It kept me guessing. The characters do a lot of actual sleuthing too, which I loved. Sometimes in cozies, I find a lot of the information is found via happenstance rather than actual investigating, and I was glad to see that isn’t the case here. I loved that Tessa is very intentional about the investigation and finding clues. It looks like we’re getting book two in 2022 and it appears to be another beach mystery! I’m crossing my fingers that Sybil joins Tessa again and they do more sleuthing together.

Wow, just wow! I love a great murder mystery book and this book had me stumped! I usually can predict and solve the mystery about half way but I was shocked to discover the ending. Very good job! I had a few assumptions but I was wrong each time.

So, let’s get into it.

Two lies on the first page had me so intrigued. Imagine showing up at a beautiful resort for your honeymoon alone.

Now, picture your fiancé showing up before your dinner rehearsal to say he can not go through with the wedding anymore. You will have to grab the book to find out the reason why. I was shocked about the answer too!

I liked how even though Tessa attended the trip alone, Tessa still managed to do all the couple activities by herself.

Sibyl had me laughing so much! I really loved that lady. She gave Tessa so many life lessons and I think we all could benefit from having a Sibyl in our lives.

I don’t care for Ethan even if he helped out a little bit in the end so let’s skip talking about him anymore lol Now Jack, I really hope there is a part two of this book and he’s in it. I definitely want to learn more about him!

This book is definitely a must read for the summer or even the fall. If you love a good Murder mystery book then you will love this. It’s very relaxed with lots of comedy scenes. No spicy scenes and I think that was the perfect decision for the book. The flow was well written and I think it would have thrown the fun vibe off.

Thank you to NetGalley EARC! As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts.

A comical cozy-mystery taking place on a sunny, tropical vacation island. It was a pleasant read, and the characters in the book were well-written. Main character Tessa Tidwell was recently jilted at the altar, but instead of breaking down, she arrives at what would have been her honeymoon at the Golden Hibiscus Resort. Upon arrival, she is asked whether she is ‘Mrs Swann’ or ‘Ms. Tidwell’, and where was Mr. Swann? I liked this theme throughout the novel, and it was undoubtedly what made this novel stand out from the other cozy-mysteries.

While downing maritinis with her relationship-wise friend, Sybil, Tessa is unwittingly roped into a murder on the island. Tessa feels like she must solve the murder and takes matter into her hands- as typical as cozy-mysteries go. One murder leads to another, and theories turn into dead-ends, but Tessa does not give up on cracking the case.

Overall, it was a nice book!

A couple of quotes from the novel:
- People always say that you discover who you are in times of crisis, and apparently the jilting was the catalyst for me learning that I have a knack for property crimes.

- I heard it described once that arguments in long-term relationships are like the steps of a dance. Each partner knows their steps in beautifully choreographed flow designed to make the other person miserable.

Many thanks to Netgalley for this book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review. My thoughts are entirely my own.

This is the first book in the cozy cocktail cozy mystery series and it was super cute. There were some moments where the main character Tessa was annoying but she does grow on you. There are so many characters that you meet that you know are going to be in the following books after this one since it’s going to be a series. Tessa arrives for her honeymoon but was actually dumped the night of her rehearsal dinner and decides to go on her honeymoon to discover herself but actually discovers a murder and teams up with a women named Sybil who tries to help Tessa. Tessa suspects Nicolette and Mara the wife and niece of the victim, Glenn. Tessa and Sybil follow them trying to figure out if they did it and what motives/alibi’s they had for the night of his death. Then the victim’s business partner Vance ends up murdered as well. Tessa learns that it was a travel influencer who is actually a con artist named Mickie. Tessa gets a lifetime of free stays and unlimited spa use for solving the crime and Tessa finally ends her relationship with Ethan her ex-fiancé who showed up to win her back and starts a new relationship with Jack. So cute but I don’t know if I want to continue the series or not.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

It’s the first book in a new series about Tessa, a jilted bride-to-be, and the criminal mysteries she finds herself in at a luxurious beachside resort.

Even though Tessa becomes an empowered woman, she sometimes annoy me. Mostly due to her sometimes continuous questions.
There is a fine line between being a dog with a bone, not letting go until every questions is answered and asking redundant questions. A line that she unfortunately crossess somewhat often.

This could also be a deliberate character flaw. Which is further surpported by her new friend Sibyl informing her, that Tessa mainly gets by on dumb luck.

I do however like how Tessa evolve and starts to grow into her own over the span of the book.

Sibyl is a great character, that brings a lot of fun to the book. Plus, her advice are highly valid.

All in all, it’s a great book. Perfect for the beach or poolside with a glass of Daquiri or Martini close at hand. And if you go to the very back of the book, you can find Sibyls recipe for her prefered Martini.

Mai Tais & Murder is an excellent start to Lydia Lane’s Beach Cocktail Cozy Mystery Series. The main character and setting is a good one - Tessa Tidwell is supposed to be on her honeymoon but when her fiancé dumps her right before the wedding she decides to go on the honeymoon herself. I love the beach setting – I felt like I was right there with Tessa (although maybe drinking water instead of the endless adult beverages!). The book is filled with memorable characters especially Sibyl – who drinks like a fish and has many ex-husbands and plenty of advice on how to get married (over and over again) – and the mysterious Jack (just what does he do for a living?). The mystery is well done with just the right amount of suspects – I was truly surprised when the killer was revealed. In the end I really enjoyed this book – it’s a perfect beach read!

Mai Tais & Murder by Lydia Lane is the first book in Beach Coctail Cozy Mysteries.

I enjoyed this book, In my opinion it was a very good combination of mystery with a bit of romance. At the very beginning it seemed like a start of a contemporary romance book.

The main character was mostly sensible and realistic, there wasn't too much of inner narrative and the mystery was overall well presented and satisfactorily wrapped up.

I really liked one of the side characters, who brought a dash of fun, wisdom and interesting stories. I sincerely hope that she will continue to be part of this menagerie.

I am looking forward to reading the next installment to see what happens next and which direction this series will take, It is not that often I get to discover new author whose books I thoroughly enjoy from the very beginning and want to binge read.

Perfect reading choice for hot summer days on the beach.

This was such an amazing book! It starts with Tessa Tidwell showing up at the Golden Hibiscus resort for her honeymoon. Unfortunately, she is alone. Her fiance decided just before the rehersal dinner that he didn't want to marry her, so, she has gone on the honeymoon by herself. While there she meets Sybil who is hilarious. She is constantly drinking martinis, even at 10 am, and has had 4 different husbands. She has plenty of life advice for Tessa, including how to deal with relationships.

Tessa has booked a sailing lesson, but when she goes out on the boat with the instructor, they find a dead body in the water, and the adventure takes off from there. Tessa ends up spending her "honeymoon" trying to find out who the murderer is and enlists Sybil's reluctant help.

The characters were fun and engaging, the mystery was excellent, and I couldn't put it down. Definitely a must read for cozy mystery lovers.

MAI TAIS & MURDER by Lydia Lane is a tropical gem of a cozy mystery!

This debut cozy stars recently jilted Tessa Tidwell who, despite a failed wedding, decides to embark on her honeymoon anyways. The solo trip brings her to the Golden Hibiscus Resort, where she finds herself ensnared in murder.

I absolutely loved this one. Lydia is a fantastic writer and this book was filled with all the humor and wit I crave in a lighthearted cozy. I found the mystery to be well-plotted, with plenty of suspects and twists, and Tessa is a tenacious (if not occasionally naive) sleuth. The tropical theme makes it a perfect summer read (though I imagine it would also be a pleasant escapist read in colder weather!).

If nothing else, read this book for Sibyl Vine, Tessa’s martini-drinking, caftan-wearing accomplice-slash-mentor. You’ll love her. 🌺

Tessa is on her honeymoon…alone. Rather than wallowing in self pity, she decides to make the most of her two weeks at the island resort. What better way to do that than look into and settling unresolved endings. Namely that of the ending of the life of a guest at the resort…and then another.

With a newfound friend and partner in crime, Tessa and Sibyl dig while Sibyl also imparts life knowledge upon Tessa. Will they be able of figure out who killed the guests without becoming the next targets? More over, will Tessa learn a few things from Sibyl in the process? After all, lessons learned and all are well worth sharing and learning from.

A great first entry in this rereleased series. It was relaxing and a quick read. I have to admit that Sibyl is my idol and I want to be her when I grow up. I’ll be back for more.

This book is what I would call a very comfy, palate-cleansing, cosy mystery. It is an excellent beach or vacation read! Tessa is a recently jilted bride who decides to go on the honeymoon anyway - sans groom. She soon finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery and surrounded by a cast of colorful characters who all bear some shade of suspicion. Tessa is relatable as she fumbles and bumbles the "investigation", however I did expect her to be a little more bereft at the loss of her fiancé. Sybil, her eccentric accomplice is my absolute favorite! Her "Sybil-isms' and all day gin swilling are the balance Tessa needs! This book was so much fun and the imagery made me feel like I was following them around the resort.

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Thank you to Lydia Lane and Netgalley for a copy of this book.
This book started a bit slow for me, that could've been because I didn't have as much time to read it in the beginning as I did towards the end. It was still enjoyable and I would love to read more in the series.
The main characters, Tessa and Sybil, were brilliant, they were so well developed and love how they 'grew'. There were quite a few secondary characters but they all fitted in and I can definitely imagine them all being at a resort.
There were a few loose ends at the end of this book, but they are all followed up in the second book of the series (thank you so much for sneak peek at the next book).
I have to see how I can keep up with this series and enjoy the shenanigans that go 9n at the Golden Hibiscus.
Thank you for writing this entertaining and wonderful book.

When Tessa Tidwell turns up to the Golden Hibiscus Resort, the assumption is hat she's on her honeymoon, but she's not - rather she is newly jilted and making the most of the prepaid vacation, solo. While at the resort she meets a host of unusual characters, from the gambling businessman to the social media influencer, and the suave single man to the utterly fabulous, eccentric, thrice-divorced, martini-sipping fabulous Sibyl, and everyone in between.

But when the body of a resort guest is found by Tessa and her tour guide, her carefree vacation turns into a murder investigation.

This was a fun, cosy murder mystery through the tropics. Fuelled by far too much alcohol and implausible situations, Mai Tais and Murder allows you to suspend belief and just go along with the ride.

I smashed through this in a day - it's a fun, lighthearted mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.

The first in a new cozy series features protagonist Tessa who is supposed to be on her honeymoon at a luxurious resort. However, she is alone as she was jilted by her fiancé right before the rehearsal dinner. She decided to come on the vacation anyway and gets more than she bargained for when a fellow guest winds up dead under mysterious circumstances. Along with her new friend, Sybil, Tessa investigates.

I enjoyed this debut! It was everything I wanted in a cozy - quick to read, light, fun, and a good mystery. I’m excited to see where Tessa investigates next!

Thank you NetGalley, Lydia Lane and Lydia Lane Books for the copy of Mai Tais and Murder. This is my personal review.
This is the first book in the Beach Cocktail Mysteries series. I am so glad I got this book to read because I am a fan of cozy mysteries by authors I have not read before.
Tessa Tidwell had visions of being on her honeymoon but instead after getting dumped by Ethan she decided to go to the Golden Hibiscus Resort by herself.
Tessa did not see herself wrapped up in a murder but that is what happens. This was a fun book to read, and I am looking forward to getting the next ones in the series.
This is a perfect beach read.

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of MAI TAIS AND MURDER (Book 1 of the Beach Cocktail Mysteries) by Lydia Lane in exchange for an honest review. Tessa Tidwell embarks on her island honeymoon all by herself after being jilted shortly before her wedding. Seeking a distraction from her misery, Tessa finds herself investigating the murder of a fellow guest. Tessa is joined by a new acquaintance: a wealthy divorcée who believes the world is a happier place when one has both a gin martini and a handsome man in hand. I liked this book enough to purchase and read the other two books in the series. I recommend it to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring island resort themes.

Lydia Lane hit it spot on with this delightful summer read. Cozy murder and beach fans will love this book. "Mai Tais and Murder" tells the story of a girl jilted at the alter who later takes her mind of her failed romance by getting involved in solving a murder. The story flows easily and kept me going from page to page. I was especially delighted that there weren't any F-bombs flooding the book. Some of the plot was a bit predictable (as I expected), but I enjoyed the storyline so much that I'm still giving it 4 stars. I hope Tessa goes on to solve more crimes in the future. It would be wonderful to see her character grow as she discovers more about her own strengths and abilities.

I overall really enjoyed "Mai Tais and Murder" I thought it was a very simply but fun plot and was executed well. I wish there was more inner monologue and descriptions of what was happening versus having so much dialogue. I thought the reintroduction of Ethan felt odd and could've been executed better. The idea that he just wasn't sure and now he was sure didn't seem very believable. I loved how strong of a lead Tessa was and that she even made a friend in the beginning who was also a strong, female lead.

Tessa Tidwell, newly single, embarks on her honeymoon alone and instead finds herself caught up in a murder investigation. While the story has its moments of suspense, the character development is lacking, making it difficult for me to fully invest in the story. The plot twists feel a little predictable; however, it's still an enjoyable read for those seeking a light, summer mystery.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and Lydia Lane for allowing me access to this book. All opinions are my own.
