I only read this one to get an idea of the college hockey scene because book 2 interested me. Cole was an ass and Kya was dumb. They're classmates at a small college, she's smart, he's a dumb jock, and they dislike one another but are paired together for an assignment after getting into an argument in their class. Gave me high school instead of college vibes. Anyway, when they meet for the assignment, Cole oversteps and gets nosy when Kya goes to the bathroom by snooping into Kya's computer to find dirt to make her life miserable. What Cole does find are some sexually explicit novels of Kya's and voila, smoking gun. Cole (white guy) proceeds to blackmail Kya (Black woman) into being his "slave", legit his words. That along with several other racially inappropriate references turned up the WTF factor on several levels. The consequences didn't fit and I couldn't help but wonder throughout the whole book why Kya was willing to be Cole's "servant" (the word is cleaned up at some point I care not to check back in on) just so that Cole didn't expose her for the naughty girl she really is instead of a nerd. Their relationship makes absolutely no sense from first hookup and I could do without the post hockey practice sweaty, wiped down with a towel but no shower oral Kya gives Cole in the men's locker room. Just gross in my opinion.
Kya's friendships with Makeba and Raven were weird to me and so was the lack of interaction with her parents the whole book. She's the daughter of a famous basketball player, someone from her life in California should've come through. Oh, she also disses California so much it was weird. She's from California but likes the laid back East vibe without the popularity and where she can be herself. The only thing is, she's just a freshman and hasn't even been out east for very long. Sighs.
The book needs a good editor. A glaring error was in the beginning of the book that the characters were alone after class with the teacher but during their stern discussion, people in the class are snickering and recording the interaction. I'll give the next one a chance since it's the one I really wanted to read but my expectations are pretty damn low after this one.
I generally enjoy a lot Jamila's books and while this book had it's hang ups, including some glaring grammatical errors, I still liked it for the most part. The main characters were very entertaining, albeit ignorant and immature. You could see their age and inexperience and immaturity coming through in certain situations. The heroine sometimes got me mildly annoyed with her incessant talk about feminism and being woke, yet certain things that should have been common sense, completely slipped past her. I did really enjoy the banter between Cole and Kya and some of the sweet moments between them, like when Cole was showing her how to skate. I loved Cole's mom and how easily she seemed to accept Kya and all her craziness. In the end, amidst some misunderstandings and best friends who meant well, but needed to work on their execution and follow through better, love won and I'm glad these two got the happy ending they wanted. Can't wait to see what's in store for Kya's equally crazy friends and what the guys they pair up with will be like.

Kya was such a pain to read. And her continuous black references were aggravating. I didn’t like her for most of this book. Cole was less of an asshole. He had some redeeming qualities.
I normally steer away from YA novels but this synopsis seemed interesting. The storyline was entertaining and much better than I thought it would be. 3.5 Stars.
Setting: Current time. At North Eastern College in Laguna Grove near Boston MA.
Trope: Sports romance. Captor/Captive. Forced Proximity. One bed.
Main characters: 1. Cole Seabrook, hero, a sophomore and star hockey player with aspirations to become a pro player. 2. Kya Anbrose, heroine, wealthy daughter of a former pro basketball player, Kya is a studious freshman who secretly writes kinky erotic sex scenes about her sexual fantasies. 3. Raven, Kya's nerdy best friend and roommate. 4. Makeba, Kya's fashion easter second best friend and roommate. 5, Dustin and Jayce, Cole's good friends, room and team mates. 6. JB, Makeba's love interest and story's villain.
This duel perspective story as young adult characters talking and behaving like teens. Due to their constant bickering, their professor assigned Cole and Kya to complete a project together. At the on set of this assignment, Cole found the erotica that Kya writes and proceeded to blackmail her into being his servant...she was a shame and feared her father would find out and judge her harshly. I think, the author was being provocative by having Cole refer to Kya as his slave and himself as her master. There is also a nauseating amount of "white boy and black girl" references from Cole, Kya and her friends. The tribunal scene is juvenile and beyond the pale for 2i-year-olds life long friends or not. It made me dislike their so called friendship and question if I want to read their stories. There is crazy stupid banter and drama in this story but it did not hinder my rooting for Kya and Cole's happy ever after.
Quit 57% in. I just couldn't continue. I read all three synopsis' of this series and added them to my want-to-read list but as I started this book, I realized I didn't hate myself enough to suffer through two more of these stories let alone this one, and deleted them immediately. Let's not dwell on the error towards the beginning that other commentators have brought up (glad I'm not the only one who caught that) but on the absolutely vexing characters that are Kya and Cole. Kya acts like this smart and has a good head on her shoulders girl but is wholly ignorant and just so fuckin stupid. One minute she's insulting Cole but then next she's giving in to his advances after he says/ does some practically racist shit 😒 dafuq?! Cole, yea I'm not racist but I'm going to make this black girl my slave because she called me an idiot (and he is) 🤨 you can't be serious. I honestly don't understand how this book has such a high score when it's just such horrible writing?! In the book there is a line that the bar is in the basement- that's where the author's writing is 🙄 I've given Jasper so many chances but this is the last straw for me ✌🏾 you couldn't pay me to read her books.
Wow, Jamila you our one of my top 5 Favorite Authors and with this series you have not disappointed me at all. Love it, I’m just disappointed that I have to wait til April 4 and then May 17 for the2 and 3 series. I know it will be worth the wait. Kya friends and there ways had me laughing, also made me think of my oldest son, boy he was a nerd. I loved watching him play video games, he played the ones were you had to read a lot to go to the end. He was band from Bestbuy, because he would beat the games within 2-3 days and exchange for another game. But the end, I didn’t think BJ would do that, wow that was unexpected. Glad that the 2 series comes out in 2 weeks. Man I am so ready.
Kya, black girl feminist, independent and equipped with a smart mouth lol. Cole, hockey jock, set on going to the NHL, loves driving Kya crazy. What starts as a crazy “relationship”, Cole finds out some juicy stuff and decides to blackmail her. He makes her his “servant” to get what he wants out of her. Kya, knowing this can ruin her, goes with it. Things escalate with them, as they deny feelings for each other and masks them. Cole realizes how much he actually likes Kya, but is confused on how act of this. Overall, their weird relationship grows and things are going good, at least that’s what they thought…..definitely didn’t see what came next! I’m looking forward to Makeba’s story!,,,
I just LOVE when Authors sync previous series to new series and yet have a storyline ALL its own.
LG Vipers are DEFINITELY a crew to reckon with. Kya and Cole’s chemistry actually smacks you in the emotions in the very first chapter. And keeps you going until the end.
Makeba, girllll, you’re next… the teaser is really having me chomping at the bit. I truly anticipating the next installment of VIPERS and the Beauties…

I read this book on a whim because the blurb sounded interesting and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I must say that this book was hilarious and I love how the romance between Cole and Kya gradually developed. The banter was jokes and I liked learning more about them as characters throughout. Not one for cliffhangers but because the book was great overall I might read Makeeba’s story. I recommend!
This was a cute read! A bit rambling and the ups only lasted a few minutes before the downs started again, like a ping-pong game but other than that? A smütty great time typical of Jamila with laughter thrown in for fun with the real sense of humor our characters had. All in all a good read, not my fav by her but still oh so much better than a lot out there! I need to see what happens next for sure!
3.5 rating with an extra .5 because I can’t give it a 3. I was a little hesitant to give it a read but it was surprisingly a silly and fun read. Kya is dumb but she’s fun dumb. Cole is also dumb in a misogynistic white boy way and that kind of pissed me off. He did sexüsally harass her and I feel like it was glossed over. Kind of realistic with the talks though so I liked that. I read worst. Will be reading the rest of the series.
Cole and Kya ! A match made in heaven . I had low expectations for this book , I don’t know why but it was so good and I laughed so much and Cole was so down bad for her and patient and just delicious in such a manly way . Don’t rely on appearances because you can miss out on amazing people , an amazing man or a fabulous woman , your person . Kya strong , intelligent and hella funny 😄 Truly loved that story . Especially during Stanley cup 2024 happening lol 😂
OMG!! This was soooo good! I hated that it ended. That Cole was something else. But he and Kya were totally made for each other. It was good to see Tuck and Aniyah again as well. I am looking forward to enjoying the rest of this series.

A few things: I’m not sure if they had an editor, weird race play where white dudes clearly are racist and abusive but the women in the story was 100% down for it. If that doesn’t bother you, this might be the story for you. Otherwise it’s a hard pass, a horrific story….
I chose this rating because the book was very good. The two couples came together at the beginning by their professor work as a project. But this is how it really happened in the world world. We believe we hate the person who we are healthy but come to find out we actually love them.
I liked this. It was sweeter than I thought it would be. I'm not really a fan of dark romance per season so I was a little skeptical about reading this but I'm glad I did! It was cute.
Although, I do agree with some of other reviewers who mentioned some plot/scene errors. It was a little annoying.
This book was off the charts. Loved Cole and Kya and their relationship and the lengths he was willing to go to prove his love to her. Jamila Jasper continues to prove how great an author she truly is.
The characters are good the storyline is good the ending of book one is great and I can not wait to read book 2 I am going to recommend this book to friends and family
I'm glad I forced myself to keep reading because the story is good but the start was trash. I know that we are supposed ti see both MCs as annoying and polar opposites and stuff HOWEVER making Kya annoying af and tossing "racist" around being an SJW on steroids and throwing cheap prejudicial insults was unbearable‼️ it felt like an ignorant white person wrote the beginning and from a black or POC author I kinda expected better. Like I get her being an ahole but the route to make her that was so uncalled for and the racial insults got old. It's not really a dark romance, the blackmail was the only dark thing. Once u get past that point it's actually a good book with great character development. I dont like the cliffhanger ending, tho. I usually don't mind them but idk it kinda irked me but that was personal preference. I think it's because well the book was decent I didn't wanna read the full series. It was clear that the other 2 are from her friends and his friends perspective. I'll read tho because I'm intrigued. I do recommend reading and seeing for yourself once u get pass the cringe beginning it's a nice story.
This story is just BAD. Everyone is a ridiculous trope and I’m seriously trying to figure out what in the DEI is going on at this college. It’s fully of racist and rapist. It also seems to require for students to be as dumb as possible. Also, I have so many logistics questions. How are you an anal virgin but you take a 12 incher larger than a coke can first go? And she has the hungriest butt on the planet! She’s also able to understand the sound of her man’s hand when he touches a car. Seriously, I don’t know what to say. It’s just trope city! I can’t muster the rest. As a lover of dark romance, this wasn’t it!
IMMA NEED FOR JAMILA JASPER TO COME WITH MORE RESPECTABLE TITLES & STORYLINES BECAUSE PUTTING A NON-BLACK MALE ON THE COVER WITH A WOMAN OF COLOR & SUPERIMPOSING VARSITY SERVANT ON THE IMAGE GIVES OFF SOMETHING ELSE IN CERTAIN FOLKS' MINDS & IT'S ENCOURAGING SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T FIT THE PROGESSIVENESS THAT THOSE OF US WHO SUPPORT PEOPLE/WOMEN OF COLOR NOT TO BE VIEWED AS SOMEONE WHO ISN'T A PERSON OF COLOR'S "SERVANT"! PLEASE DO BETTER, JAMILA JASPER!PERHAPS WRITE A BLACK LOVE STORYLINE. THAT'LL BE A CHANGE OF PACE FOR YOU.
I didn't finish this book. I reread the first couple chapters several times to make sure my brain was right about the mixed up details. So, the professor asks them to stay after, the girl is super whiny, it says the are the only ones there, but suddenly someone is recording and the fmc is fist bumping her friend who is there again? Yeah, I am detail oriented, just couldn't do it.
I almost put the book down a number of times but decided to jump pages instead. Plenty of cringe moments for me.
The characters are really unlikeable. Both the hero and heroine were annoying and their immaturity showed several times. Another reason why I'm usually weary when it comes to YA books.
However, the ending was okay though it left several unanswered questions which I hope will be answered in book 2.
I typically love books by this author but this one didn’t do it for me. The storyline was good but the FMC and MMC annoyed my soul. It sounded more like high school than college. Their friends were no better. I skipped about 6 chapters and went straight to the end because I wanted to find out what happened. Hopefully the other two books in the series are better. If not I’ll skip them and move to something else.
Definitely started out on the “dark” side. Rich, black girl with smart mouth vs white, middle class hockey player who wants to make it in the NHL. They have a love-hate relationship but are sexually attracted to each other. Entertaining story with a few funny moments.

I must say I enjoyed this book so much! I'm a biracial girl living in the South, and I can literally identify with some of this book! This book was funny, and a good story too! I'm glad it came up when I was searching for another book because I would have missed this cute read!
I think a lot of parts in this book are childish. It almost seems more so high school romance versus college romance but I do see that they are in college so they can’t be immature overall very much dark romance. I love it can’t wait to see what happened to the second book OK I’m starting the second book right now bye-bye
Kya definitely drove me crazy a bit and I feel like Cole should’ve been punched in the face a couple more times. I almost quit reading it about 2 chapters in but I figured it was going to just keep getting crazier (and it definitely did) but Cole’s sweet side definitely pushed me to continue reading and ultimately finish it. I was definitely (and bizarrely) entertained.
I like reading about twisted jocks and this definitely scratched that itch. Literally proof reading errors here and there but not enough to distract. Very funny, kinda cute, slightly dark, idk I've read worse to truly call this dark.
