Pitch & Sickle #4

The Greensward

Rate this book
The Lady’s Horsemen are riding out once more. Carrying death’s scythe to where tormented souls linger.
But what awaits them in a world where divine magick has returned?

Pitch is recovered from the injuries he received in the Forest of Dean, and Silas won’t soon forget the part he played in setting his guardian back on his feet.
The ankou and the daemon have been reunited in a most unexpected and intimate way, but barely have they caught their breath when a new threat arises.
A tortured spirit is frightening both the living and the dead along the roads of Devon.
But is this soul a monster that must be stopped, or another pawn in the necromancer’s mysterious game?
With Azazel’s magick re-emerging after hundreds of years, maleficium plagues the world once more. But who is wielding the forbidden arcane magick of the angels?
Do they work alone?
And why are they so intent on harassing the Lady’s Horsemen?
Silas has never felt stronger, or more determined to live up to the Order’s high expectations. He’s faced the walking dead, outwitted the enchanted Hall, and gained an ally in the skriker.
But he’s not sure he’s equipped to handle his growing attraction to a troubled daemon.
And Silas fears that getting any closer to Pitch and his tragic secrets may prove as dangerous as the monsters they are riding to face.

The Diabolus Chronicles is a slow-burn MM Gaslamp Fantasy series that contains on-page sex scenes, gore and violence, and rather a lot of cursing.

READER NOTE - This book contains a scene of sexual assault between supernatural characters.

This is the fourth book in the on-going series.

Alas four books into this series I think I may have hit that 'barrier' where all the things that annoyed me a little about the MCs in all the earlier books have finally caught up with me. The plot drama/action with monsters and fae continue unabated - the author generally does a great job with introducing nasty-baddies and building up the tension factor. It was the emotional / relational sturm und drang that I tired of early on and this got worse throughout the read resulting in quite some fast-forwarding of sections. Not sure now if I would move onto the next book despite some late in the book hints/revelation on the angelic/daemonic machinations front; 2.5 stars at best.

THE GREENSWARD is the fourth book in the Pitch & Sickle series and, as with the other books, this is an ongoing story so you NEED to have read them in order.

These guys never catch a break! Of course, if they did, we probably wouldn't have this story. Trust me though, for me, this was the best of the bunch so far. It was full of action, well-paced action that had me gripped. It's not nice reading in certain parts but oh-so-worth it if you can stick with it.

We learn more about Silas and Tobias' pasts and I really hope Silas shares. These two are only just learning to be there for each other, and his secret may just set them back a few books!

This series just gets better and better. The relationships have changed slowly but I loved it when both Tobias and Silas realised just what the other meant to them.

One thing to mention - I love how local legends have been woven into this series. Each book has its own and I loved how the author has blended them seamlessly with the overall story.

Highly recommended by me and I can't wait for book five!

This series just keeps getting better. Action packed as always but a lot of relationship development in this one also. This is not a stand alone. You need to read the series in order. If you like paranormal historical w a darker edge, I highly recommend this.

DANIELLE. YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!

My ass cheeks were clenched so tightly I could have cracked a walnut with how tense I was feeling with all the action, the reveals, and the plot twists.

I have been on a Pitch and Sickle binge as soon as the new book was released and I am dying for the fifth book. None of this went in the direction I suspected. None of it! I'm also word vomiting everywhere cuz I'm tired, I'm riding a book high and I'm just excited to see where this goes.

I do have to say, despite all the descriptions of pitch's hair being light brown, brown, golden, what have you ....

My brain refuses to imagine it as anything other than red. I guess to match his temper? I don't know LOL

Thanks so much for the awesome books Danielle and I'm living for the next one!

Love, love, love! The chemistry between Pitch and Sickle, even when they're fighting their attraction for each other could set an entire forest on fire. We also get more information on Sickle's background, as well a surprise appearance by Pitch's sire. The plot is excellent. Lots of twists, turns and subplots. October seems sooooo far away for the next installment.

Seriously, this series is addictive. We learn so much in the book, and the MCs make huge leaps in their growth. I’m glad this one has them finally get it all (well-almost) together. It did get a little repetitive at times with the “I’m the worst”, “no I’m the worst” but again the characters grow so much that I could, mostly, forgive it. I’m curious how many books are planned because the next one seems like it could be the penultimate and I’m hoping it’s not!

*I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review*

Do pay attention to the s*xual assault warning - there's an extended scene involving this subject, so if that sounds like it may be triggering for you, then proceed with caution.

A tad slow in the beginning, though I think those who've read the previous books will be familiar with the kind of building-relationships-while-traveling thing that Pitch & Sickle tend to do, so if you're at this point (book 4), I doubt you'll mind much. There's still meaningful development in the slower bits, so it wasn't a problem for me. It picks up with a bang later and, as a side note, I thought the tension leading up to the main conflict was pretty well-crafted.

I think overall that if you've enjoyed the previous books, you'll enjoy this as well. It follows the same general formula, with some interesting new reveals and progress (more so than the previous books). I've really enjoyed this series thus far, and I look forward to seeing where this story leads.

Always a winner

I really enjoy these unique stories by d.k girl . I don't know much of angelic hierarchy, but the story flows beautifully. I don't wish to spoil any of the plot lines , but these stories are a winner! Already bought the rest .

I devoured all 4 book. This one be being longer with more revealing of what happened to Tobias and who Silas really is.

These secrets are revealed through action which I liked. There’s no going back and forth in the characters past with the narrative. Silas had the majority of the pov still but we get to her Tobias’s voice much more. There is a TW and for some reason I didn’t expect it be the character it
Was!

I like how Tobias and Silas have been brought to life thorough the authors writing. This is no easy romance. Definitely class it as slow burn. But I like that in a romance. The author gives the reader time to know and understand the individual chapters before bringing them together.

Tobias… so much emotional pain…. He’s like a prickly cactus in bloom. Pretty but deadly with his words and whit!
Silas.. I love how he has grown in emotional strength and his belief in Tobias is wonderful to see.
We are not left on a cliffhanger. Book 5 is out in October… and there is still a way to go with both protagonists ending the impending disaster of the blight!

I can’t wait. I just love how Tobias and Silas interact..there’s humour, sexy and cute flirting as well
As some hurt and pushing away! But I feel
We have left them at a good place by the end of this book.
Definitely recommend this series if you like the ‘penny dreadful’ feel to your romances.

*I received this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*

Having recovered from their injuries, Pitch and Silas are back on the road this time in search of a ghost so tortured that even the dead are afraid. But with unspoken feelings between them, can Pitch and Sickle still work together to overcome everything that they must face?

The Greensward is my favourite book in the series so far. Pitch and Silas are finally becoming a little closer, although they still have their own internal battles to overcome. A lot more of Pitch’s past is revealed and it is unexpected and devastating to learn of what he went through. Knowing more about what torments him gives a greater insight into his character and why he acts as he does. I am looking forward to seeing how Silas’ further understanding of his companion develops their relationship further.

In this novel, the foe that they must face is not what they seem, and Silas learns that even other Ankou cannot always be trusted. Whilst he has gained greatly in confidence of himself and his abilities, it is obvious that his mission is best served by having Pitch at his side and help from his increasing number of allies.

We learn more about the Blight and the world that Silas is living in, and I cannot wait for Book 5 to be released!

This series just keeps getting better and better. I am really enjoying the interaction between all of the characters, not just Silas and Pitch, which is nice. Their frustration with being kept in the dark was definitely understandable; as maddening as it was at times to not have all the information, when things were finally revealed, we were left with even MORE questions. And I loved it!

Their "relationship" is finally becoming something a bit more tangible and I love the direction it's taking. Once there was communication between the pair, things definitely were easier; something that had me almost pulling out my hair in frustration with how much they assumed about the other's intentions.

This latest twist with Silas seems interesting, and I definitely would like to know more about his first life to see how far he's come, especially since Lady Satine and Mr. Ahari seem to think he's come back lesser.

I devoured this book, and honestly, I'm thinking of going back to re-read it already because it was just that good.

Oh my goodness this was such a fantastic addition to the series! We get more of Pitch’s POV, we get action, we get villains, we get steam, we get some trauma for the MCs, then we get some of the sweetest most tender of moments before these two delightful characters, and we learn something big about Silas’ history.

The oh-so-slow burn of the books before now finally catches on some kindling and it was worth the wait. Nothing could have allowed Pitch to be so vulnerable with Silas without the history they’ve shared so far. I’ve been team Pitch since book one and it has delighted me beyond belief to get so much time with him. (Though this of course led to some moments of anguish with him too…I literally cried at one point!).

Anywho, it all made for a book I didn’t want to put down and made me so sad I didn’t have it in audio so I could just listen while I farmed. Phew. It was so very good. I cannot wait to start the next one!

The fourth book in The Diabolus Chronicles is filled with lots of action and more than a few explanations. Pitch and Sickle are on the road again helping lost souls and tracking down monsters. They find evidence that Azazel’s magick is returning; maleficium is once again a plague. Those using these are willing to do whatever they need to in order to succeed. These users are also not happy that Pitch and Sickle are stopping some of their best.

Our heroes are getting closer and closer. They may gripe at each other but neither one would leave the other behind. They are coming to realize how much they mean to each other. We learn so much about both of their pasts and it is so intriguing. Local legends continue to appear and enrich the story so much. These stories get better and better. The next one should fantastic.

Danielle K Girl has created a wonderful world with an array of colourful characters. Each instalment has grabbed hold of me and not let go until I've turned the final page. It's actually tortuous waiting for the next book, which I'm sure would please Pitch no end!
Speaking of Pitch, and Silas; the two lead protagonists are so beautifully portrayed. I've really enjoyed their burgeoning relationship and the slow reveal of the trauma they've both endured. Not to mention all the crazy mis-adventures that they constantly land in. I'm also fascinated by the world-building and the gradual way Danielle K Girl is letting us know the origin stories of Silas and Pitch. It's really well done. This book, and this series, is highly recommended.

It’s about time!! Finally we’re getting somewhere. This book was the best so far from the series for me. We’re finally getting some answers and seeing the end game. This series has had its ups and downs for me. I’m happy that I stuck with it but I still feel it took way too long to get to this point. The relationship was nonexistent for the first couple books and the storyline confusing as hell. Silas still was too naïve for my liking and continued to be oblivious to danger but maybe he’s finally caught on? I also disliked the noncon with Pitch- totally unnecessary. Otherwise as I said this book really moved the story forward and I enjoyed it tremendously. I’m really looking forward to the next one.

It's great to see both Pitch and Sickle back to full form and strength in this book and brother do they need to be. This penultimate entry in the series had both the characters and this reader on edge as magic of various kinds grows stronger in this world and the time has come again to start sorting out friends from foes. The slow burn romance is heating up in this one as our two main characters continue to spend time together, work/fight together and learn that they can count on each other through thick and thin. I'll be really sad to see this series end, but I also can't wait for the fifth volume to see how the author wraps things up.

Now that the series is complete, I've begun rereading what I had read before. And I'm glad I did, because it prepared me for the complexity and roller-coaster that was the Greensward.

I also glimpsed several other reviews. I agree, that the beginning of the book seemed slow, but as ALSO mentioned, there was PLENTY of foundation being laid down for what came next. The terrifying danger our guys found themselves in hit like a 2x4 to the head, leaping from simmering dread and growing certainty that something was wrong, 'to holy shit, how did this happen?' in mere pages.

Best book of the series yet, but hey, I'm not done, and I'm on to book 5 with a grin!

Some mysterious questions get some, probably tentative, answers, and a relationship deepens further. The assumptions the reader makes in the previous books veer away toward other directions in a most intriguing way. I really like the first three books, but this is the one that I wanted to go back and reread as soon as I finished. Do read the first three first and the joys of book four will emerge for you as well. I love Silas and Tobias! And they become more loveable as the series continues!

Breathless, speechless, totally captivated by this book.

Well, if you've been reading this series so far, you'll have a bit of an idea what adventures/situations Pitch and Silas can get caught up in. But this book takes it to a whole new level. Intense, dark, terrifying, but with DK Girls usual flashes of humour to break the tension. You won't see the twists coming. Some questions will be answered, but more emerge. Artfully written, each scene lavishly described. You'll feel like you are right there with the boys. An excellent read.

Ok whilst still an incredibly written story - this instalment is my least favourite so far. Can’t quite put my finger on why, it’s got some heavy bits and a lot of relationship neediness (and for the record the intimate relationship part is not why I love this series so maybe that’s also it lol, gimme adventure, battles and thrills).
Will that stop me reading the next book - hell no!! Bring it on…

Another excellent entry into The Diabolus Chronicles. More world building as the boys chase down another assignment. More mythology expanding with the introduction of another ankou. Pitch realizing his feelings finally and being vulnerable (as much as he can) with Slias. I love the world of the series and the relationship between these two characters. I cannot wait for the next in the series!

They are riding again and things may take a twist that was not expected.one still feels the part they paid in the situation. A soul may be a monster that needs to be stop or are they a pawn in a new plot against them? How will they find out? Can they deal with it all? Where will this tale take them all? See just where they will end up at

The chemistry between these characters is amazing! I love the supporting cast and the world the author has built around them just as much as the main story line.
Silas has grown in his role as ankou and Pitch as protector.
Can't wait for the next book.

Overall, this was a really good book with more reveals about Silas and Pitch, and further strengthening of their relationship. I’m knocking it down to 3.5 stars because I hate sexual assault being used as a plot device.

This book is definitively my favorite of the series thus far. After all the action at the greensward, I was really happy that both Pitch and Silas express intimacy they’ve held at bay. We also get more secrets unlocked and starting to see the end game
