茅野海子今年65歲，喪夫後一人獨居。某日出門去電影院，遇到一名外貌中性的美少年「海」，激發了她體內對電影的熱愛。隨後，海子以修理錄影機為藉口，約海來自己家一趟。海離開後不慎把筆袋遺落在她家，她送筆袋去學校時剛好是校園參觀日，參觀後便決心要報考海就讀的美術大學電影系，親手拍攝電影。某日她約海到家裡吃飯，海說出了自己過去的經歷，不禁流出淚水。由於聊得太晚，海就決定要在海子家留宿一晚……

Voici un manga qui pousse à s’interroger sur le devenir du 3ème âge.
Ici nous suivons une grand-mère qui se retrouve veuve et sans but précis dans la vie. Heureusement elle va nouer une relation d’amitié avec un jeune homme étudiant en cinéma. C’est donc là l’occasion de remonter à la surface des désirs enfouis.
A travers le prisme du 7ème art, nous voyons une envie se réaliser avec un regard différent sur le monde par rapport à la jeunesse. C’est un vent de fraîcheur.
De plus le dessin est affirmé et plaisant. Il contribue à l’impression de mouvement qui s’amorce tout au long du récit quand notre héroïne met un terme à son immobilisme.
J’ai adoré cette histoire, les messages véhiculés sont très forts et abordés de manière simple et efficace. La joie de vivre de cette grand-mère qui ose est un vrai baume au cœur.
Je lirais avec grand plaisir le tome 2…

As somebody who is closer to 65 than 25, I really took to this lovely story about a widower, Umiko, who realizes that her passion for film is not necessarily in the movie proper, but how people react to it.
This story is great and it wasn’t surprising to see that it was nominated for some awards. It is unique and ties several ideas together into a satisfying whole. It has a thoughtfulness to it that I especially enjoyed.
While it is certainly a manga about the importance of film, and it has fantastic representation for classic cinema, its true focus is on creativity and how it can bring people together. Even those with very disparate ages.
Umiko’s eventual companion as she dives into this new passion for filmmaking is Kai, a young man studying film at university. Their bond is clear from the start, but it’s truly magical during the last chapters of the volume.
Kai recognizes Umiko’s talent and helps usher her into her return to academia. I appreciated the way he saw something of himself in her and tried to keep her from retreating back to her routine.
That does make it sound like Umiko’s rather passive, but she’s also a delightful main character in her own right. She can come across as a bit out of touch at several points, but the manga doesn’t portray her as doddering or clueless.
I think the amount of culture shock she experiences going back to school is about right. It’s believable without going overboard, even as she becomes a bit of a sensation on campus.
Having a personal fondness for movies myself, I found Umiko super relatable. I have definitely echoed the idea that eschewing social media in favour of enjoying something in a shared space is generally a more healthy approach to the world.
The juxtaposition of the old and the new is quite interesting, as Umiko ends up on Line, for example, or we examine Kai’s use of pronouns. Umiko stumbles through things like the modern movie theatre, but she has a lot of life experience to contrast that.
Likewise, the story never backs away from the enormity of what Umiko is trying to do, nor the judgements that come her way. It makes for some good friction between her and her classmates that we’ll probably see explored later on.
It’s a really strong first volume. Everything makes sense - even Kai’s encouragement of Umiko is rooted in regrets that he has from his own past. Proving that regret for things we’ve done is an almost universal experience, and can accumulate quickly.
4.5 stars - one of those where I want the next volume before I give it a full five stars, but this was a unique and delightful read and, if you like film, it’s an especially easy recommendation.

La rencontre fortuite d'Umiko avec Kai, un jeune étudiant en cinéma la poussera réaliser qu'on fond d'elle se trouve un rêve : devenir réalisatrice. Alors même à 65 ans passés, Umiko prendra son courage à deux mains pour s'inscrire à l'université et apprendre le métier.
Rares sont les histoires dans lesquelles le protagoniste est une personne "âgée". Umiko est une femme très attachante et la voir entreprendre cette nouvelle passion pour la réalisation est profondément inspirant, quel que soit son âge.

Tomo introductorio que ya me ha emocionado y que promete una buena historia. El personaje de Kai me tiene intrigadisima. Umiko es simplemente amor y espero que se integre y me la cuiden 🙏🏻

"I can't handle any more waves in my everyday."
This was far more emotional? thought-provoking? than I expected!
I really wasn't sure how I would feel about this story due to the immense hype for it, but I think it's warranted after reading because I would love to see what movie Umiko is going to make!
Speaking of her, she was such a fun and compelling heroine! I really loved how, for being labeled "old lady" and "grandma," she had a lot of energy and was full of surprises! I especially enjoyed her little comebacks in her head of how, when people would mention she had a good memory for her age, she would internally comment how she wasn't THAT old. Or how she would view Kai as a hissy cat and was excited when she got him to come around and eat dinner with her! LOL!
She's very lovely and deeply enjoyed seeing this new passion ignite in her! With that, though, my heart hurt for her AND Kai in how it's too easy to say our passions are just "hobbies" because we're unsure how people will react to what we've created or we think we won't be successful. I felt myself getting a little choked up when Kai was sharing something that happened in the past and how Umiko unknowingly hurt him with her words. It felt far too relatable to me when it came to both of them and their perspectives.
I also want to mention that I deeply loved the sea analogy woven throughout the volume and how she said that for people who are the "makers," it comes down to who sets sail. Even before her saying that, the way the waves crashed over here and would come up often to and over her feet was very compelling!
Overall, I would recommend this first volume! It's heartfelt, fun, and inspiring, I think, for any reader, regardless of age!

I remember when this English license was announced someone on Twitter said 'peak.'
Well, they were RIGHT.
And of course this isn't peak in the way that Current Hype Shonen is "peak" but it's a story that'll stick with you for a while, especially those of us who've heard that "it's too late to do x" and "you need to grow out of your interests." Umiko taking that big leap into LETTING herself explore her love for film in an academic setting (and around all these YOUTHS) is really something special, even in this first volume, and her friendship with Kai as a thing of mutual inspiration is really sweet. I'm looking forward to further volumes, and getting to know the other characters more.
Also can we talk about the JOY on this cover?? So cute.
(Look at me dropping a review for a non-ARC for once lol)

Woow, c'est beau comme histoire! Après avoir perdu son mari, Umiko rencontre Kai, un jeune cinéaste de qui elle se lie d'amitié. Celui-ci l'encourage à produire des films avant qu'il ne soit trop tard. Umiko s'inscrit donc à l'université à l'âge de 65 ans pour essayer de faire quelque chose de concret dans le milieu du cinéma. Et elle a trouvé sa muse... C'est doux, super poétique et l'amitié naissante entre les deux personnages est magnifique. Bien hâte de lire la suite 👀

En ocasiones si aparecen historias diferentes y es que un manga con una protagonista de 65 años ya es una rareza de por sí, pero encima, encierra una oda a la vida y la creatividad llena de humanidad. Es un milagro que ayuda a creer en las segunda oportunidades.

Nous sommes en aout et je peux tout de même affirmer que ce manga va être le meilleur de mon année 2023! Un chef d’œuvre à n’en point douter!
Si vous voulez sortir de l’ordinaire du manga? Allez-y. Si vous voulez des personnage vrais, drôles et attachants? Courrez. Si vous voulez touchez à l’art, le vrai? Ne bougez plus, vous l’avez trouvé.
Ce manga raconte l’histoire d’Umiko, retraitée qui, toute sa vie, a cherché sa voie. Et c’est peut-être lors de sa retraite, après la mort de son mari, qu’elle va enfin se découvrir après sa rencontre avec un étudiant en art.
Kai est seul, renfermé mais apprécié de ses camarades. Il porte un regard particulier sur le monde et va pousser Umiko à sortir de sa zone de confort.
Et elle va le faire. Elle va reprendre ses études, en s’inscrivant en cinéma. Leur relation va évoluer de connaissance à amis et ces deux personnes si uniques, qui la vie et l’expérience séparent, vont accepter de laisser rentrer l’autre dans sa vie.
Ce manga est d’une beauté ahurissante, les planches d’une qualité souvent inégalée, touchant, drôle, brut de vérité, plein de bienveillance et d’espoir.
C’est un véritable coup de cœur et j’attends le tome deux avec impatience pour voir où cela va nous mener.

Nhiệt huyết và đam mê nhưng không đi kèm với dũng khí thì sẽ mãi là sự bỏ lỡ và khiến người ta day dứt. This series has a lot of things going for it that makes me very fond of it. The art is beautiful. The characters are all likeable, even ones meant to challenge the protagonist. The story is great at portraying how the main character analyzes herself and her role as an old lady taking the risk to do something new and big in her life. Her perceptions of others, others' perceptions of her, and her self-perceptions are related to her interest in movies as she changes from a spectator into a director. Also, she's so nice and pleasant! Anyways, it's totally worth checking out.

This made me really emotional and also so happy to read. Umiko is very endearing and I can’t wait to follow her journey towards her dream. Kai is very mysterious but I feel he’s a very good character. This is the second series I read from this author and I’m never disappointed. She really puts her dreams and hope in her characters and seeing them live through her art is really a pleasant moment of reading. I’m definitely gonna follow this series closely!

July 28, 2026This has a really charming dynamic and does a great job capturing the overwhelming feeling of becoming inspired, something intangible that captures you but doesn't exactly teach you how to do anything with that emotion. I'm already drawn to the questions of what separates those who create and those who watch and as someone who has repeatedly thought that it would (one day) be nice to make movies, this feels like a sugary gut punch.

Cute and comforting story. I just wish it went more deeply into the movie aspect. They never really mention many movies, or show parts of the filmmaking or film viewing experience that the characters care about. Still a cut above most of the manga stories I’ve read though, and I’m excited to continue.

It's not bad, but kind of patronizing. Practically did a spit take when the grandma character says she's 65 (can you even image someone so ancient???). The art really struggles with depicting older people. They tend to look like young people with like an extra line or two on their faces when you get super close. Distracting!

incredibly interesting premise and so far some good character development and pacing! the art is really good too. i will say the main male character has some borderline unrealistic character traits that sometimes feels shoehorned in but going to wait for more development before speaking more on zat

This briskly paced manga is perfect for cinephiles! It reminded me of Goodbye Eri but, with a more straightforward plot. There was less mindfuckery going on here. It was refreshing to see an older heroine in manga for once!

Such a refreshing manga, it’s amazing to have a series featuring an older, female protagonist. A really hopeful, powerful series without being sappy or cloying.
