In “The Lovers,” Isabella sells knick-knacks at a desert flea-market outside of Las Vegas, aloof and confident in her card reading skills—until the day she meets her match. “The Kitchen Sink” follows Madeline as she dutifully helps her parents prepare for a dinner party, but a storm is brewing between certain members of the house. Thus is but a glimpse into this transcendent collection of five short stories. In each one, Iocca briskly conveys the magnitude of everyday life with charm and subtlety. Something More is a dazzling volume that wisely explores family, womanhood, and the crux of human connection. Iocca has laid out our shared realities, universal yet deeply personal, and shaped them into a gift.

In Something More, you will find the nuances of the simple pleasures in life. You will find families struggling with each other, deceit, young love, and the aching from the act of finding each other through empathic means. Ms. Iocca paints a visage of American family life that one yearns for in 2021. The life filled with subtleties and emotions that rage true for everyone. Love and togetherness, freedom and independence, these dichotomies are at the forefront of the beautiful tapestry that she paints for you, leaving you with a sense of nostalgia that will have you breathless. Ms. Iocca has a stunning voice and I am extremely excited for new stories that come from this talented young writer. 5/5
