Great read. Really picks up to the point where it’s hard to put down
I really enjoyed this thriller. A little bit of a slow start to set the table but the pace picks up to weave an excellent story together. The setting was accurately conveyed as far as equipment and situation and you wonder if it really happened. Highly recommended
Good reading full of action and made the reader feel like he was in the briefings with the soldiers. Could have come out of a secret file from the war in Vietnam. Can't wait to read others in this series. Mr. Helm writes well researched novels and keeps the reader excited to turn the pages.
About time someone told the truth about what we experienced during Tet. We kicked their butts! Yes we did. The Advantage army should have been able to end the war, but Congress cut the needed supplies.
A very explicit novel of political confusion concerning the conflict in Vietnam and the difficulties of maintaining stealth in such unbelievable weather conditions. Teamwork and camaraderie at it's best.
I felt like I was beside the men the whole time. Eric Helm is the best writer that I have read for this kind of book! Can't wait to start the next one!
I enjoyed THE RAID by Eric Helm and considered it a plausible story. I, too, heard stories about Caucasian soldiers joining the North Vietnamese soldiers in ambushes and other fights while they assigned me as an infantryman during the war, but I never saw one. This book is closer to the truth than most people know. I found documentation and photos that not only did Russia supply weapons and other supplies to North Vietnam, but they also provided over 10,000 Soviet military specialists who served in Vietnam: from missile crews, pilots, and signalmen to tank crews and doctors.
The story is engaging and focused more on top secret missions into places where the US isn't supposed to be. It also shows how the government did everything possible to keep these missions secret, sparing back and forth with crafty reporters trying to find out the truth. The government officials were masters in deception and cover-up.
This book was also a learning experience for me where I learned more about these covert missions and how everything is planned thoroughly for success. My only concern is that the story bogged down in spots where there was more talking than action taking place. I also found several typos. They didn't deter from the story, but I found them distractive, especially from an author with so many books published. I would expect perfection.
A great finish. I do recommend this book and look forward to this author's next book in the series.
