When an aged terminally ill detective and a young burnout are partnered up and saddled with an unsolvable case, they begin to unravel a sprawling conspiracy that points to one thing: The most prolific serial killer in american history. As they further investigate the case they make discoveries that will force them to question everything and everyone they know.
TRUE DETECTIVE meets LETHAL WEAPON with the prestige dramatic storytelling of a David Fincher film.
This was pretty dope. So we have one older detective that’s just mean as hell. Later, we find out why he’s like that. Pretty sad. Then we have the younger detective that just doesn’t give a damn about anything. We also find out why he’s like that. Pretty jacked up. They have both ran through partners. A case comes up that you wouldn’t give to your worst enemy. So what does the chief do? He pairs these two detectives up to work that case. Damn. But, they end up getting close to the real answers as to what happened. That’s when shit hits the fan. No happy endings here. If you like crime/detective/noir stories, definitely check this one out.
Hackneyed gritty and grim cop drama. True Detective with the serial numbers filed off. Inker and colourist make it hard to follow the story because the characters often look different from page to page and it doesn't seem like the problem is with the underlying pencils. The visual ugliness of American comics continues to startle.
Read Sin City or 100 Bullets for better hardboiled/noir comics.
This is True Detective boiled down to its purest essence. A phenomenal graphic novel about an investigation in a series of murders that bursts forth with life and mystery throughout.
Paint by numbers noir, striving for that bleak Ellroy/True Detective vibe but falling short in the messy haste of sharing the details. Terrific artwork and mood, decent but slightly cookie cutter characters and backstories. The villains in particular never really pop beyond generic 1%-er evil scum which is almost always the deal. A little too dry on the page. If you’re going to do straightforward noir in comics, might be better to lay the pulp on a little thicker, a la Miller’s Sin City stuff. But maybe that’s just a personal taste thing. Not a bad read, but doesn’t hold a candle to Brubaker in terms of dialogue and plotting.
Basically take The Wire and True Detective and put them together. There's two detectives trying to solve the murders in a small town. But of course it's not so simple since once they get a trail it leads to some rich asshole. As we get deeper into it, we see more of our detectives general life to the point you get to know them, but this doesn't end happy.
Dark and moody with great pacing, really dug this one. I can read more like this! Very Brubaker like.
This was my first time reading a true-crime style graphic novel and it DID NOT disappoint. It is gritty in both story and art style. The characters, while a bit cliché were well done and the story was fantastic. It is very similar in tone, and truthfully in story, to the film Seven. The characters are very much a like and the story is equally dark and foreboding.
This is a standalone, which you don't see much in the graphic novel medium and I really enjoyed that aspect as well. It was nice to have a complete story and a satisfying ending. It wasn't revolutionary, but I will keep Pires name top of mine for future reads.
A pretty great crime thriller that feels like a movie. It doesn't follow your normal comic tropes and instead genuinely feels written for the big screen and adapted skillfully to the comic medium. It goes to dark places and the killer reveal isn't necessarily memorable, but the buildup to it is fantastic and the design of the interrogation connecting the beginning to the end is just really well done. I wish they wouldn't have used the wrong there/their so often especially since I actually think it was intentional as part of the characters' dialect but the pronunciation is the same so just use the correct word for the love of god.
This is absolutely brilliant and I so happy that I stepped outside of my comfort zone and read this. As the title says, this comic is not for the faint of heart. If you don't like things that can get a little gory, or on the disgusting side, this isn't for you. I mean, this a comic about two detectives that are chasing a serial killer for goodness sake! I look forward to Pires next work, as I was rooting for the characters, and wanting to bash in a few heads myself.
I had my doubts about this book but thought I would give it a chance. The art is muddy, murky even, and that tends to put me off. Turns out the art lent a great deal to the entire narrative. The tale is dark, confusing and riveting. It's quite like watching a very old movie; a film noir. The faces on the characters show their exhaustion with life and carrying the heavy burdens they are chained to. It's a really good read and well worth pushing through a slow start.
The colour scheme, and the drawing style make it grittier than the writing ends up being. It’s been done so many times before, across so many genres, that to make a ‘good-cop-turned-sour tracks down deadbeat-scum-law-makers-and-law-breakers who have wronged them and done terrible things to their loved ones’ storyboard in graphic novel/comic form, it needs to be transcendent… and this is so far from that
A good detective story, started off a little slow but picked up in the second chapter. Atmosphere reminded me of Se7en (the movie). Art was not particularly memorable for me, but worked well with the tone of the book. Overall, I enjoyed this and would recommend to anyone interested in gritty crime stories.
I'm happy for this free Prime read. Good story. Good old detective work. The artwork is so-so. Slow intro and then comes the pick up in pace. The characters have their problems and their past with unfortunate flaws. Some parts are disturbing, but that is what kept me reading. A good ride to the inevitable ending.
This could have been something really special, but as is, it's kind of a misfire. There are some faint parallels to True Detective, yes, but they're very faint. The artwork is kind of a mess throughout--hard to tell different characters apart and to tell what's happening in many situations. I honestly was hoping for something better.
A good story, even if it is one which has been done before. The artwork didn’t do much for me, but that’s just personal taste, although it definitely had the grittiness you’d expect to match with the tale. YMMV. Be warned though, this has some pretty gruesome scenes, it’s definitely not one for the squeamish.
Like a rotten plant, reaching out, our decisions can spoil everything around us.
like other great stories, Memoria doesn't necessarily break new ground, but it does bloom from fertile soil. The decisions made and actions taken spread out, to either poison our surroundings spreading woes farther or containing the contaminant and allowing something better
This was a fun, fast read. Nothing to fresh and new to the genre but still compelling stuff. The pace is quick and the twists and turns come pretty frequently. The ending is pretty dark but satisfying. This was another decent offering on Comixology Unlimited.
Memoria might feel like a routine serial killer mystery but it sure does not end that way. There is no happy ending and their are a few loose ends remaining but coupled with a fairly decent artwork, Memoria is a jolly good gripping read.
A well constructed dark novel and good material for a movie with believable characters you can relate to. I couldn’t get over some typos and grammatical errors, but that’s just me being a pain in the bum.
Single sitting read with no lulls or filler, broken compromised people who do the right thing, intense and gripping makes you keep reading to the end without pause
Is there any other kind worth reading ? I was actually sorry it came to an end, it was so good, will be looking out for more by these guys in the future …
Excellent police story! Mysterious, with unexpected turns and twists, dark and gritty. I really recommend it. I can totally see a movie out of it, unlikely, though.
