Charlie Rhodes #10

The Wendigo Whoop-de-Doo

Rate this book
Charlie Rhodes has the one thing she always wanted but was afraid to admit. The parents who gave her up for adoption are back in her life, but the transition from orphan to adult child isn’t going to be an easy one. Before she can commit to the process, however, a new job pops up for the Legacy Foundation and she’s whisked away to upstate Washington.

A group of teens celebrating graduation and preparing for college have gone missing in Nighthawk, a former boomtown that has exactly one resident, a crazy old bootlegger who wanders the area dropping ominous warnings before disappearing into the darkness.

The Legacy Foundation is called out when several bodies are found, all with the sort of injuries that can’t be easily explained, and local law enforcement officials find themselves stumped. From the first day at the town, Charlie knows they’re in trouble as the memories of one of the missing teens threaten to overwhelm her. Is the girl still alive? Did she fall with the others and simply hasn’t been found? More importantly, what are they dealing with?

The specter of an evil witch hangs over Charlie and she’s eager for something else to focus on. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done when it becomes apparent that Sybil knows exactly where they are.

There’s more than one killer in the Washington woods, and both serve as a significant threat to Charlie. She’ll need to overcome two threats to keep her team safe … and figure out the one thing that’s so far evaded her.

What does Sybil want? You’re about to find out, and the answer might shake the foundation of everything Charlie believes she knows.

Losing Hope

When this series started out it was great. All Thai background on creatures or whatever they thought they were searching and Charlie learning about herself. Well now the stories are 80% Jack acting like the female in the relationship to Charlie acting like she doesn’t have a backbone. She was so much stronger in the first book than she is now, which I find ridiculous. It’s like a soon as she started dating someone, she is now weak and needs ppl to hold her together. And Jack, wow, I dislike reading male authors bc they just can’t seem to get female characters down. And I know this author has a few other male characters well planned out but Jack is so fake, his reactions, the way he talks. It’s like she took a woman that took psychology classes in college and gave him a male body. That’s it. He is way too female. I’m gonna muddle through to get the stories (the fun part when they are investigating) and skip everything when Charlie and Jack are talking… repeat the same things over and over again.

better then the last few books

This book was better then the last several books. Finally things are starting to come to a head, which helps the plot considerably. There was a lot less of the alpha male crap from Jack, and the whining from Laura.

Obviously, the author registered some of the readers complaints regarding Jack and Charlie’s relationship as well as the continual lack of substance to the Laura character. Of course she couldn’t help but put in her own whingy comment within the story. It occurs approximately at the 75% mark. Paraphrasing, the author writes about how each person is like a character from an author’s book, and that the readers should not expect an author to remove a character just because we don’t like how she is written. The fact that the Laura character has been so significantly changed within this story, and hopefully it’s a permanent change, she must have realized either modify some of her writing or lose her readers. That the relationship between Charlie and Jack has also been changed, showed she understood that it couldn’t continue forward with how it was. We will just have to wait and see if the author decides to continue writing using these modified characters, or not. I hope she does, as I do enjoy some of her books, but they are best when each series stands on its own without the previously mentioned detractors I have said in this and other reviews in regards to her books.

I am glad that the Sybil situation is hopefully on the verge of being solved. Something within its concept didn’t really add much to the story for me. It always just seemed a means to an end and was a bit formulaic in the writing. Sort of like a bad TV show, you know what will happen because the same plot has been reused so many times, it’s only a variation of a theme. Once this portion of the story is complete, then some new content can be created that can stand on its own. If not, then close the series and try writing something new. Possibly a series about how Harley came into being as a crossroads demon.

I continue to hope that this author’s writing gets better and grows. This novel is a definite improvement. There is much potential, but there is also lots of formulaic writing between the series, such as having young female character A, with overbearing alpha male B, elderly eccentric female C, etc. With Paranormal Cozy mysteries, you do expect a little formula to the story, but each series shouldn’t always follow the same basic plot and character outline either. Hopefully the author will break out of her story mold and begin writing more stories with unique plots and characters.

I’d much prefer a good book every few months from whichever series, then an author write a formulaic POS book every month rotating each month to a different series, just to show how much she can produce in a year. These might not be the great world class novel that many authors hope to write, but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be well written and as unique a story as possible either, just because it isn’t that one hopeful great novel. You never know, one of these stories if written well enough, might flesh out to that greatly aspired novel.

Poor Story and Character Development

I know this is just a silly story but I was hoping you'd improve on Charlie. She should have developed her witch skills by now . Goodness it is book 10. A whole bunch of kids are killed yet Charlie is only capable of running. Harley is the one who is the heroine. What great stories you could do with her. Chad was the most interesting new person in this story but you killed him. Sybil should win. She is interesting. You can make a neat bunch of stories with her. But your treatment of adoption is what really hurts. To find homes for children other then babies is terribly hard. So many parents also leave their children in limbo, stuck in Foster Care, because they won't give them up afraid that their child will think they don't love them. I would be so disappointed if my child acted like Charlie does toward her birth parents. It would mean I didn't raise her to realize how much she is loved by all who have been involved in her life.

Annoying

Am I the only one who find her parents so dam annoying and stupid. All this time they didn't find out why she wants the girl and keep running as if that will solve anything. Also girl has magic and didn't think to use it to find the kids at the get go, are you kidding me? Honestly this book is getting too stupid. Waste of time

Clever

How clever of the author to slide in the analogy about Laura and readers of a book. I’ve seen many complaints about Laura. I’m all for having a ‘mean character’. I actually happen to like Angelina in the Grimlock/Death Gate series’. The author seemingly fails to realize it was TOO much. Angelina isn’t in every single chapter. Laura is. Angelina was raised to snipe at Aisling. Knowing that her mother set her on that path as a child makes me understand Angelina and even pity her a bit.
But Laura is a nightmare. The entire team hates her. She adds nothing to the story for me. She’s just as bad as Jack. Both are condescending asses. But at least she embraces her flaws. Jack deflects and tried to act like the good guy. He can’t even do the job he was hired to do. He’s no longer Head of Security for the team. He’s security for the one person that doesn’t need protecting. He’s rude to her family. He’s rude to Chris. He treats his girlfriend like a little girl. He’s needy and codependent.
I truly wish Charlie was strong like Izzy or Poet or Zoe (not Hadley, though. All she does is follow her boyfriend around instead of working on learning her craft). Her reactions are what you’d expect of a teenager in high school. She actually adores the way he talks down to her and his over protective nature. It’s sick.
He pulled her out of the hug her parents were giving her after the ordeal was done. Pulled. Her. Away. From. Her. Family. My god, she can’t accept a hug without him controlling how long it lasts. But what do you expect from a guy that almost went postal bc a male masseuse gave her a hot stone massage at a spa? Insecurity.
And for gods sake, enough with the main characters making their families and coworkers listen to stories of their sex life. Especially in front of parents. There’s a line there that shouldn’t be crossed. Yet the author falls back on it in every series.

Gave it a 3 out of 5 because the Wendigo story was actually interesting.

As in my review of the last book, I maintain that Charlie and Jack’s relationship is codependent and abusive. Although Charlie has proven herself to be more capable than Jack in every single book, he constantly puts her down in the name of protecting her. Dude, you don’t need to protect her; she’s the one protecting you from the paranormal because you don’t have the skills to do it.

And Jack is ALWAYS there. This isn’t a healthy relationship. Charlie should be able to have some time to herself. She should be able to bond with her birth family without him there “protecting” her at every move.

And how many times do we need to hear their “love story” in every book?! Give it a rest! They’ve been together for less than six months and they’re in each other’s pockets every single moment. Jack just puts in the deposit on the apartment without Charlie’s input because he knows what’s best. Cool. She liked the skylight.

It’s gross how Charlie and Jack are all over each other around her parents and their work team. Jack pulls out the “I’m the head of security” when it’s convenient for him. He let the team down on several occasions in this book because he “had to” be at Charlie’s side. It’s icky. We get it. You “love” her. But you also have a job to do and a duty of care to the other team members that you shirk.

If he really loved her, he’d encourage her to spread her wings and have some sense of independence. He’s so condescending it’s sickening.

I’m this deep into the series, and I’m going to see it through, but I skip so many pages of “I love you lore, no I love you more, no I love you more, no I love you more” “you’re not capable, yes I am, no you’re not; I know best, I am so capable, no you’re not, welp, I guess I’m not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “

I get that these books are romance novels, but lay off on the codependent abuse. It’s an old trope that has no place in this day and age. How about we see strong women with equal partners.

Entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Amanda Lee writes multiple book series with many different characters types of characters and locations. Most of those books all are located in the same world. It’s a human world were magic in many forms exist. Most humans do not know about it but there is a magical community out there. Charlie is a special witch. She was given up for adoption as a child to avoid some kind of family curse that was put on her family. In recent books she was reunited with her birth family. She still works for the legacy foundation going out with her group and researching supernatural events creatures etc. She is a supernatural working among humans looking for supernatural phenomenon. This book has the title states had something to do with Wendigo‘s in ancient Native American mystical myth. Read on and enjoy the adventure of Charlie and the gang researching and trying to find out the truth is it real or is it fake and west behind it all. You will never be bored reading one of Amanda‘s books. Each character is well thought out and draws you into the story and get you involved in the characters in their lives in the story. Read on and enjoy.

Wendigo woes..

With a group of 8 teens gone missing in Nighthawk an old abandoned mining town list in the wilderness along the Canadian border the Legacy Foundation is called in to assist when rumours of a Sasquatch surface.

4 bodies have been found, but no sign of the camp or remaining youngsters. Charlie and Jack are still trying to keep her powers hidden from Chris, Hannah and Laura, Laura is still not herself following being abducted by Sybil at the sanitarium and is refusing to go out to the scene of the disappearance.

Melina and Mike have followed Charlie to Nighthawk at risk of revealing their relationship with her and Casey is also there now he's a full time Legacy Foundation member. Millie's suspicious when Charlie and Jack head off to chase down some land registry records.. is her secret going to end up revealed with so many people in the know?

As Sybil starts appearing in Charlie's dreams and leads her to the real issue, a wendigo, she can't help wondering if she's going to turn up to complicate the situation still further.

The truth when it comes out is all of one man's creation, but can they persuade the wendigo to do the right thing and end it's rein of terror?

Now we know!

What does the witch, Sybil want with Charlie?
Now we know, and the fight is on!
This newest book in the series is part murder mystery, part family relationship dynamics, and part monster hunting.
Eight teenagers are missing, and three of them have been found; dead. It's up to the group to figure out what happened to them, who or what killed them, and if you any of the others are still alive.
With Sybil invading Charlie's dreams about an old homestead, and the young girl who lived there, her parents showing up to (help), Laura acting out of character, and very little to go on except for the bits and pieces Charlie is getting from touching some of the places one of the missing girls touched...
Well, confusing is one word for the situation they find themselves in. Another word is; danger.
Jack and Charlie may be in over their heads this time.
If you like snarky humor, adventure, cute romance, and things that go bump in the night, (sometimes in the daylight too), you'll love this series!
Start with the first book and read them in order.
You'll be glad you did!

Lots of potential, poor writing

The premise of this series is intriguing, especially to anyone who was a fan of Supernatural and the X-Files. Sadly, the poor writing and lack of realistic dialogue detract from the stories. If I have to read the verb "groused" one more time, I will personally buy the author a thesaurus. Jack is a terribly developed character and an even worse head of security. He no longer has the best interest of safety of anyone but Charlie in mind. Their relationship also went from being anxious about sleeping together to bring unable to think about or do anything else in record time. We get it. They're a couple of horny rabbits. The regular use of Harley as a deus ex machina further proves that this author needs to hone her craft.

Starting to get serious

I like seeing Charlie come into her own, although I am worried that she is going to be another over-powered MaryLou types. I hope that she will need practice and just get by, thanks to the good will of the author. I love her character. Charlie is uniquely sweet and optimistic,I hope that can last. I was worried for most of the book that the first victim was so obsessed that she would become a wendigo, but apparently my detect-plot-device wasn't working this time. I'm still not sure about Laura. The depth puts into her characters is what sets her series above most other paranormal mysteries.

she can do a lot

But she can’t run forever. Charlie’s parents are still trying to hide her, but Charlie has learned a lot, and she’s getting very strong. With her brother, her true love, and the parents who had to let her go to keep her safe, Charlie has grown much more secure and comfortable with her magic. Mean girl, Laura, has been oddly subdued since she was temporarily left in the ghost ridden asylum, but there’s not much time to focus on that irritation with the team’s latest assignment, to find out what has happened to the small group of teenagers who never returned from their camping trip to a place with a very bad reputation.

Wendigos Aren't People Too (Any Longer)

Charlie, Chris, and the Legacy Foundation go to Nighthawk, Washington to help find 8 teenagers who did not return from a camping trip. Some are dead and appear to be murdered by something paranormal.

Charlie gets information on one of the teenagers that aids the case as well as a house in the woods.

Throw in Charlie's parents, a crazy guy, one of Jack's friends, and an evil witch who wants to live forever to make a interesting story.

Eagerly awaiting the next book!

If you go down to the woods today, prepare for a big surprise!

Well, congratulations! You’ve managed to collect the whole set. Now that Charlie has been reunited with her long lost family, it’s not all sunshine and unicorns. However, family time has been cut short when a job pops up that sends Charlie, Jack and company into the wilds in search of some missing teens - and Bigfoot… again 🤷🏻‍♀️. Still, things aren’t what they seems, and as Charlie has conflicting visions, a new problem threatens to out Charlie.

Mind you have not read any of the previous books in the series. I can already tell that maybe I may want to start from the beginning.

After what Paulie was thinking about his girl and how and when to break up with her I am almost regret that he was made mince meat.

Now the long truth of what is killing these folks is astounding and I never would have seen it coming and what she was seeing and the overlapping stories of each girl was heartbreaking.

The dude in the wilderness got exactly what he deserved for his roll in playing the deceiving sh*$.

This is a good book; the last two were basically the same story with a different slant: I don’t like whining heroine; I like street smart, intelligent and witty, not stupid. Please do not make her a whiny and needy. You have a great story line, instill more confidence in your heroine, and stop holding Jack back, this a team event. She need help get the team together. Let her grow.

Good read!

I felt like this book had better plotting than the last. Plus there was less gooey romance, which has been very repetitive in some of the past books. I get the feeling that the publisher’s requiring a certain number of pages and of course that messes with the author’s flow. This book was more substantial about that. Best part is it had a great ending! The “hook” was perfect!
I can’t wait for the next one!

Its a what?

We have all heard about what a Wendigo is and we have all heard about a lot of things to make you afraid of the dark. I love how we get a little history on how some of these things that go bump in the night. Charlie and her team try to uncover the truth, sometimes it comes back to haunt them. I am glad Chris wasn't hurt to bad and will recover. As for Laura who knows what will be come of her.

This is not my favorite series by this author (who is exceptionally prolific), but, as always, it is well-written. I cannot really say there was anything wrong with the story, but I've never really "clicked" with any of the characters. I don't hate them, but they just do not appeal to me as much as some other series. The action is certainly ramping up towards something; leaving it necessary to anticipate the next book.

An excellent series of books

I binge read all ten of these books. Charlie is magic, Jack is a bit of a pain he needs to give his head a wobble sometimes. I hope there will be more books as I want to know if Laura sorts herself out. Charlie, Sybil and Harley have unfinished business. Plus the paranormal creatures and people that they chase. Plenty of mystery and mayhem throughout the series.

A great mystery

This book kept me engaged the entire time I read it. I'm reading the Mystic Caravan mysteries along with this series so it's interesting that both books I read had to do with wendigo. Lol... The similarities are becoming more obvious. Poet(magical)has Kade(security) and Charlie(magical) has Jack(security).
In any case, this book really had me intrigued and reacting to Laura, Millie and Chris.

On to the next book...

Charlie, Jack, and Harley!!

What a combination! Remote town, haunted town, and Wendigo. What’s not to love? As usual, Amanda delights and this book in the series is just as good as all the others, except Charlie now understands what Sybil really wants and now she can really start the preparations for the showdown! Bring it on!

Some questions answered and another mystery solved

A seriously intriguing series.
I love how it’s slowly unfolding, each mystery is gripping, adventurous with a side of fun. Add little snippets of Charlie’s past, drop a few clues find a few answers and I’m left wanting more and more with each amazing story.

Talk about amping it up!

I love all the books by this author. Yet I found this series kind of slow, predictable, formulaic. My goodness did she break the mold for this one. It is truly the best book in the series. I could not put it down!!!
The only bad part? Waiting for the next in the series!

Oh my gosh!!! Excellent story!

I don't leave well written reviews, so please believe me when I tell you this just might be the BEST book in any series that Amanda M. Lee has written to date! It seemed as if every page was riveting. It was filled with witches and magic, evil and Wendingos, lots of murder and mystery. Enjoy!!!

This was great adventure.

I liked the mystery, the humor and the word play from all the characters. Still lite in the magic which I hope we get more of in future books. I also like there was a real paranormal case and not some someone pretending to cover up a murder. I can't for the next show down with Sybil and the next tram adventure.

Too much family.

Love the series, but we hate her old family inserting themselves into the job story. They are taking away from the main story we loved in the beginning. They are extremely overbearing and pushy. Less of them and more of the original story charm and paranormal stories. Love Harley. ..
