When the Horsewomen are sent by the Goddess to locate four human males, they saddle up, assuming they're readying for the long-awaited Apocalypse. Angry with humanity's lies, greed and selfishness, they are raring to go.
When they each find their target, however, they discover there's a lot more to the men - and humanity - than they expected.
Will they save the world or doom it?
Meet the Horsewomen of the Apocalypse: War. Pestilence. Death. Famine.
A collection of four short stories.
Expect swearing, fast burn steam, a spot of silliness and four fierce females.
* This is the first book of an intended duet and has an open ending, ready for the concluding part.
GH has been an ardent book lover her whole life and, at age nine, boldly claimed that she would be a famous author before turning thirty.
Although a little late, she pursues her childhood dream of becoming an author with adventures in the world of paranormal romance, and the fierce Horsewomen of the Apocalypse.
She lives on the South coast of England with her family, three floofy co-writers and an apparently-immortal leopard gecko called Cyril.
GH loves to connect with fellow bookworms and can generally be found online chatting about all things books and unicorns.
Who knew history got it wrong? G.H Brookhorn’s debut introduces us to four strong, feisty and sassy women, the four horsewomen of the apocalypse. For thousands of years, men have done their best to rewrite history, changing Goddess into God, horsewomen into horsemen.
War, Death, Pestilence and Famine are not what you think, with War loving unicorns and Pestilence loving to debate about her favourite Disney princess. It was a clever twist that in this modern era Pestilence’s way to spread the plague was through social media
“I loved to scroll the depths of social media and feed the trolls, spreading the plague of misfortune.”
These women have been brought together by the Goddess to complete a mission and find one particular man (or man-sheeple according to War) to bring back and help them fulfil their assignment. These women are awesome, each finding their chosen man and falling instantly in love. Finding a giggly, flirty side of themselves they didn’t realise they had.
My favourite one of the male characters would have to be Silas (G.H Brookhorn, you had me at “Holy Brian Molko” – Anyone who doesn’t know who he is just look up “Every You Every Me by Placebo). He and his PVC trousers that creaked as he and Famine were trying to do some stealth hunting were hilarious.
The book is in five parts, the first four dedicated to one of the horsewomen, then the final one to the Goddess who reveals why she has brought them all together. Is there a cliffhanger? Yes. Am I busting for the second book – absolutely!
This was filled with everything I love of well written strong characters and some sass, humour and steam! A fantastic debut and I cannot wait to read more from this author.
I had so much fun reading G.H. Brookhorn's debut novel. It introduces us to the Four Horsewomen sent by the Goddess on separate missions to retrieve a human critical to their subsequent mission. The book is divided into four novellas as we follow each Horsewoman on their individual mission.
I love the Horsewomen's relatable quirks and how they engage with the man they were tasked to retrieve. Who would have thought that War is a true believer of Edna Mode's philosophy on capes? That Death is a Twihard AND Team Jacob? That Pestilence likes to troll message boards about Disney Princesses? Or that Famine cannot resist a good adult shop?
Each Horsewoman's story is a novella that comes together at the end. Because each story is a quick read, there is an element of instalove, but G.H. Brookhorn maintains a great and entertaining pace.
It does end on a cliffhanger, but even though I am not a big fan of those, the stories were wrapped up well enough and I felt like the cliffhanger is more a setup for the next book.
Saddle up, ladies! G.H. Brookhorn’s debut, a collection of four short, kickass stories, is a wild ride. Follow War, Death, Pestilence, and Famine—the REAL Horsemen… the FEMALE Horsewomen!—on their quests to find love. TFHoA is funny, witty, and an insta-love/fated mates feast. I was laughing out loud and digging these women. They are all so different, and their men are unique and interesting. I can’t wait to find out what happens in part two! It’s sure to have more snort-my-soda humor and spiiiiicy sex scenes, just like the first.
The Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse is a brilliant debut by G.H. Brookhorn. Each of the women had their own quirks and flaws that made them relatable. But their badassery made the whole a compelling and emotional adventure.
The insta love, sizzling chemistry between them and their fated and unique men was a real treat. My favorite was War and Zeke. I mean, just the names themselves make you raise an eyebrow, but then you find out he’s a pacifist? What fun!
The four stories are a fresh take and kept me highly entertained. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!!!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
G.H. Brookhorn got me got of my typical "genre comfort zone" with this one! I'm not typically a spicy reader, but I'm always drawn to the supernatural. I found this piece--a collection of short stories from the POV of the four horseWOMEN of the Apocalypse--not only hilarious, but insightful. Brookhorn is not afraid to take risks with dialogue, leaving the reader with a killer cliffhanger, and reinventing the wheel of favorite tropes.
Anyone else trying to figure out their taste in men while reading this?! I kept changing my mind with each new pov. I thiiink I want Silas sex, Levi body, and Ephraim looks! Basically, I didn't decide 😅
It was such a quirky, steamy, easy read though and I loved all the women, the badasses. Can't wait for more!
Not what I expected! It was better. Firstly, I adore a fated mates trope. They give me all the feels. I loved that this story depicted the horsewomen as these fiercely vain, macho, take-no-shit, women (because they're deities, duh). I loved this new twist on men, and how everywhere we look, they got history wrong haha!! Thank you Brookhorn for this deliciously fresh, smart, and funny (and true as far as I'm concerned!) rendition of a tale that's been told a hundred times. Gimme more, Gimme more!!!
Really enjoyed this retelling(AS IT WAS TRULY MENT TO BE) of the "Horsemen( HORESWOMEN more like)" of the Apocalypse. I delighted in G.H. Brookhorn's interpretation of Famine, War, Death, and Pestilence. They were wonderfully contradictory to what most of us have in mind of who they are supposed to be and it came together so perfectly. Seeing them instantaneously fall in love with their male counterparts had me swooning and giggling like a girl with her first crush. The Goddess( yep, we have been lied to about that too) knew what she was doing when she sent them on their top secret missions. I can't wait for book 2 where we get our HEA and get to see Ms Brookhorn's interpretation of "the final Apocalypse."
The Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse by @ghbrookhorn_author
Okay, so full disclosure, I have a weird *thing* with the Horsemen. They were one of my favorite arcs of Supernatural, so when I saw G.H. was writing a gender bend twist of the horsemen, I was hooked by title (really, just the concept!)
We follow each horsewomen on a God(ess!) blessed mission. Each horsewoman is so beautifully different and unique. And I will tell you, I was most excited by Death's story. I absolutely LOVED it!
Humanity is already questionable, so seeing the deities first thoughts that were so hilariously similar to their feelings against humanity. "Man-sheeple" in particular. I'm not a huge fan of the insta-love trope, but G.H. really knocked it out of the park!
I couldn't put it down. The writing was witty and brilliant, the horsewomen were intriguing and quirky. The steam is HOT!
I absolutely cannot wait until The Apocalypse (But Not As We Know It) is released so we learn more about the Goddess!
What happens when you are face to face with one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and realized the it is a very attractive woman?
G.H. Brookhorn blew my mind with four short completed stories that will work as an amazingly written first part of a duo that will lead us to the mission of their existence. 10 colorful and layered characters (yes, I am counting Luna too) that made it almost impossible for me to choose a favorite, and surely it is Famine!
She couldn't have written a better present for a romance lover and paranormal romance reader like me. I can't wait to see what else she will deliver and for the Apocalypse to begin!
Amazing introduction to The Horsewomen. The Dieties are all completely different and not at all what I expected. From a bubble bath lover to a cook. A Team Jacob fan to a Disney lover. They each had a fun a quirky trait that made them each unique.
I simply cannot choose a favourite couple. I love them all for completely different reason. Each human tempers the Horsewomen in very different ways. They truly are soul mates. I can't wait to see how their mission goes & what they decide to do next.
I loved this book! 😍💯 Four fierce women with super powers and their fated mates, what could be better? I loved the little details like the fact that Famine smelled like peaches and cream to her man and that Death was a Twilight fan lol 😂 The writing was smart and funny with plenty of spice 🌶🥵 I’m looking forward the next book already!
I love snarky and clever re-telling of the apocalypse (I re-read Good Omens every year) and G.H Brookhorn added a delightfully fun entry into this genre. Each short story follows one of the Horsewoman (yes women, turns out we were lied to about the whole horsemen thing) as they head out on their assigned top secret missions. Quickly, each of them are knocked flat by meeting the love of their life once they get out in the world.
I adored how each horsewomen found their perfect counterpart and was all in immediately (my favorite story was famine but pestilence's was a close second). I am a sucker for a fast burn romance so the pace for each couple was perfect for me.
The world building was great, especially for a short story, as is the ongoing mystery of what the apocalypse will be! Whatever GH is planning next for the horsewomen I need her to hurry up and write it up so I can find out.
Four strong, fiercely independent women have been given the task individually to find a mortal man each. They each must locate the chosen male and return him to their goddess so their mission can be divulged. Each thinks very little of humans until they meet this particular man who they feel an intense and extreme bond to. The four are protective and extremely surprised by each others connection.
This was incredibly amusing to read and I enjoyed the personalities that came across in the short stories. I liked each female character who were nothing like you would imagine. This was laugh out loud in parts and incredibly heated in others with each horsewoman finding themselves mesmerised by the man they have collected. I enjoyed reading about this from each character's point of view which made this much clearer. I cannot wait for the second book of this duet which promises to be action packed. This was a refreshing and unique read that showed feminine strength at its peak.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It was refreshing to see strong-ass women who were comfortable in their skin and roles. The men were brilliant additions :)
War:
Minerva hates man-sheeples. Imagine her horror when she is sent on a mission to retrieve a human, Zeke. It gets worse- when she meets Zeke, a humble museum-shop employee, she can't help her attraction to him.
Pestilence:
Apollo is in Pompeii and hates it. The only positive thing is the eye-candy. She meets Levi and it's immediate attraction. What's even better is that he is her mission!
Death:
Bella is a secret Twilight fan and when she comes across Ephraim, a Jacob look alike, she can't believe her luck.
Famine:
All Demeter wants to do is use humans for her pleasure and when a one-time romp leaves her feeling completely out of her depth, she is not as willing to move on and forget him.
Overall, this was a fun, quick read! I look forward to what happens next with the the four horsewomen of the apocalypse!
The Four Horse Women of the Apocalypse is a collection of four kick ass short stories. Following Death, Pestilence, War and Famine as they are sent back to Earth to complete a mission given to them by the Goddess. Each must retrieve a man, and bring him back to the Goddess for further instructions. Although each story is standalone, they all come together at the end, and will leave you wanting more.
As they are short stories, each Horse Women experiences their own version of instalove, but the fast pace and storyline keeps you enthralled throughout. I absolutely adore the way at how Unique each Horsewomen was, especially Death. She was by far my favourite. A great Debut, and I can't wait to read the next installment.
Quirky, Steamy, and Fun you will not be disappointed in grabbing this 5 * Read.
I loved this! Delightfully different in every way, this is such a fun and funny collection of stories subverting popular tales. Every horsewomen is as unique as her mate (or mansheeple, as the case may be). The feminism rings strong through this one, but there are insightful comments on humanity at large dotted throughout with inimitable snark. Definitely excited for the next one. (And I'm not even a fast burn person.)
This book was a great, quick read. I liked the idea of horsewomen, a Goddess and thought it was well done. It was well paced and each character seemed unique and well developed.
This boldly written collection of romantic short stories is fast, fun, and fiercely female.
GH Brookhorn engages us the enjoyable adventures of four sisters - the horsewomen of the Apocalypse - as they fulfill their assigned mission in current times, all while inspiring the reader to rethink the male-dominated narrative of human history and its impact on Earth.
The horsewomen are smart, capable, and sexually adventurous and each find a fated mate uniquely suited to their strong personality.
With an intentionally abrupt ending, the reader is left wanting to know more: the next book in the series promises to explain the events that led to "Him" creating human society in his self-centered likeness, instead of the presumably more beneficial "Her." Can't wait for the next in the series!
"The Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse" has been awarded the FEMINIST SPICE CLUB designation earning a 5 out of 5 on the FSC rubric.
This was a super fun and steamy read. So great to see women at the forefront and changing the narrative. The Four Horsewoman of the Apocalypse features Minerva (War), Apollo (Pestilence), Bella (Death) and Demeter (Famine) as well as The Goddess. Sent on mysterious missions by their Goddess to each meet a man and bring him with them: this story follows our 4 Horsewoman as they take charge of their own destiny and fate, guided partially by the Goddess. These woman have to reconcile their past deeds and misgivings; finding themselves worthy of peace and love. I really enjoyed this quick read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ok, I'll say right off the bat that I don't think this book was for me. I didn't care much for half the characters (I despised War in particular), and I don't think I'm a fast burn kinda gal.
That being said, the characters ARE all very diverse and well fleshed out, the dialogue was pretty entertaining, and the concept was very unique. My favourite couple was Pestilence and her Jock. It was a brilliant move to make social media a plague. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out in the second book, and I'm happy to say that I haven't actually figured it all out already (this is rare).
I must say, I don't know if it was a quirk of War's speech pattern, but I found the first bit of the book had quite a few grammatical issues. It didn't continue throughout the book though, which is why I think it was specifically something built into War's character design, but it drove me absolutely bananas.
I received an ARC of this book from Booksprout in exchange for a review, but all opinions are my own.
Despite knowing well the old adage about judging a book by its cover, I’m a sucker for an interesting picture and couldn’t resist this one when I saw it advertised somewhere on social media. I checked out the blurb though, before downloading it on Kindle Unlimited, and it promised quite well in terms of a Feminist rewriting of the impending Apocalypse. Maybe I should have paid more heed to the last line though, because my attention was so focussed on the ‘swearing’ and ‘four fierce females’ bits that I didn’t pay enough attention to the references to ‘spicy relationships’ and ‘spot of silliness,’ which seem to have been the guiding principles of the story.
It’s a story within which the four horsewomen—Minerva, Apollo, Bella (or Morrigan) and Demeter—all undergo a similar experience, albeit with varying details, in the first part of the quest upon which they are embarked for the Goddess. And it’s a pretty ladette-style thing with a rather old-fashioned message attached, meaning so much for the Feminist interpretation I was hoping for. And the next part of the Goddess’s mission for our heroines? The subject of a soon-to-be-published sequel. But if you like ‘a spot of silliness’ including some sexual shenanigans with hunky heroes then this is probably right up your street.
For me, the most interesting part of this book was the idea of a feminist history and deities rewritten to promote the patriarchy. Social media as a disease was a nice touch, too. Neither feels impossible, though I felt plot was too often sacrificed for rushed romance, including any and all obstacles wiped out in mere pages to get onto more romance. I'll admit part of the blame here is mine because I'm a slow burn person which this definitely isn't, but all the meet cues felt like the same insta-lust despite the horsewomen's vastly different personalities. Even just a little more back and forth before jumping into the portal then the sack would have worked. I may still read the sequel for mere curiosity, and it was well-written with different personalities coming through.
What if women were really in charge? This fun book explores just that. A female goddess and the four horsewomen of the apocalypse.
I really enjoyed the whacky, kinda messed up horsewomen. They each have their own quirks. And their male companions were all hot, as was the action when they met up!
Death who likes tie-dye? But of course. Famine who likes cooking? Why not? Don’t buy into the stereotypes – LOL.
I was a teeny bit confused by their Greek and Roman God names, but hey, I just went with the flow.
This is but book 1. We’re introduced to each deity and their partner in hilarious yet steamy action in this collection of short stories. And then we’re all queued up for the actual mission which will presumably take place in the next book.
This book was full steam ahead. I really enjoyed how it was written. The character transitions and multiple povs were really well done.
I enjoyed the premise of this book more than the actual book. For me, it felt like every human who met the 4 horsewomen was on a mission to practice the missionary position with one of the horsewomen and for me that didn't really sit well with me.
While i get that this was a short story collection and not a novel nor novella, a little build would have worked for me but other than that, the book was well written and made me keep reading.
It's just the build for me. A little more and i would have really enjoyed this book.
