Výbor z povídek Guy de Maupassanta, jednoho z nejslavnějších francouzských autorů 2. poloviny 19. století, vybral, uspořádal a nově přeložil Jiří Žák. Sbírce vévodí Kulička, která byla poprvé vydána roku 1880 v souboru Les Soirées de Médan (Médanské večery). Kulička je autorova novelistická prvotina a francouzský kritik A. Thibaudet o ní výstižně poznamenal, že Maupassant "nenapsal už nikdy nic lepšího jenom proto, že dokonalost se nedá překonat".

About the author

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

A collection of short stories set in the second half of the 19th century in France, all of which touched my emotions and moved me - to humour, to pity, to disgust - but ultimately none had a satisfying ending. They were all very life-like in that respect, but still, left me a hungry reader.

Unsatisfying endings which are deeply connected to their realistic roots. In leaving a bitter feeling, they encourage contemplating the lives of Parisians and Normandy dwellers while vividly describing the surroundings of French landscape with the ubiquitousness of the Prussian war in some of the novellas.

Ač nejsem fanoušek povídek, líbily se mi Maupassantovy postavy. Jeho postavy byly napůl spodinou společnosti a napůl osoby s ryzím charakterem.
Jsem mile překvapena i z méně známých povídek krom populární Kuličky.
