This book is packed.

Disclaimer: I’ve met Aaron at a retreat and was impressed firsthand by his methods and approach, which prompted me to buy his book. He is extremely somatic in his method. While I’ve read the book cover to cover, I’ve only scratched the surface of diving into all the exercises he describes.

He gradually builds up a repertoire for moving emotions through the body by using breath, sound, and movement. And while a book might assist in developing such proficiency, it’s most likely best to see and experience these skills in the context of a retreat or a workshop. Once that initial palette of how to move emotions is introduced, Kleinerman describes many (and I mean many) methods of somatic exploration with specific themes in mind: childhood beliefs, connecting with the feminine aspects, embracing shadow desires, feeling and moving Eros, touching the divine, and more. The book almost has too much content — a casual reader might be overwhelmed by how much Kleinerman offers to explore.

Woven into this is Kleinerman’s story — his childhood, youth, early adulthood, and his journey through the world. While unique, his life seems quite far from a traditional one, and unfortunately, instead of inspiring me, it raised a familiar shadow that focused on our differences rather than pulling me closer. Oh well, just another shadow to acknowledge and work with.

On a stylistic note, Kleinerman tends to ramble a bit, and it’s easy to lose his thread. I found myself rereading some sentences several times to fully comprehend his message.

I hope I’ll come back to the exercises in this book and experience it more somatically instead of “just” reading it. In any case, Aaron’s work is admirable and should be embraced by more men — and people in general. I recommend the book, but for those truly curious, go to a retreat or a multi-day workshop that delves into these topics, then pick up his book after having practiced the initial work of such a lifelong journey.

Insightful and Practical

Aaron does a beautiful job of balancing experiential storytelling with wisdom with practices to support in greater self-awareness and self-knowing. After reading this book I feel more connected with myself and better able to engage in this world as a man.
