“What’s your favourite food?”

“You..”

👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻
THE SEXUAL ESCALATION POTENTIAL WAS RIGHT THERE AND YOU DID NOTHING WITH IT??? 🙄🙄🙄

I read this because I read online it was horny, and it definitely wasn’t horny enough considering it’s a wolf boss and his adorable little twink goat employee.

It was pretty cute but didn’t feel fleshed out enough before we were hit in the face with the grand old “I love you” confession.
It wasn’t bad, the art is adorable, there is SO MUCH BLUSHING and I’m weak for a good blush 🤭
But eh at the same time 🤷🏻‍♀️

In a Nutshell: An unusual story in manga format with anthropomorphic animals and forbidden feelings. Mind you, the story is cute but part of the content is R-rated.

Story:
The setting is a peaceful world divided in two camps, carnivores and herbivores. Each category sticks to their side of the city unless there’s a genuine need to go to the other.
Yagi is a goat who loves books and dreams of working in a bookstore. Unfortunately, as a goat, he also loves to eat books, which is why no herbivore bookshop is willing to give him a job. In desperation, he tries his hand at the bookshop in the carnivore section. To his surprise, Ookami, the scary wolf bookstore manager, gives him a job willingly. Will Yagi be able to do justice to his new employment? Will he still eat books? Will he be in danger from the carnivores that surround him? Why did Ookami offer a job to a book-eating herbivore? Read and find out.

The story was MOSTLY very cute. I loved the initial chapters where the characters of Yagi and Ookami are established clearly. Their relationship develops nicely as the story proceeds and I was MOSTLY happy with the entire content. Yagi’s funny relationship with books is the best part of the story. He loves books by reading them as well as by eating them.

What I didn’t know while requesting the book is that this is what is called a ‘Yaoi’ manga, a genre that depicts homoerotic relationships between male characters. I am okay with books about romantic relationships between two males but boy, I was not prepared for the erotica! I try to stay away from anything remotely steamy, so to see… errr…. you know… male dangly bits, and the characters indulging in… ahem… activities I wasn’t mentally prepared for, I was, to put it mildly, scandalised. This was even worse because the erotic scenes came out of nowhere. Part one, squeaky clean and adorably cute. Part two, begins squeaky clean and then Bammm! You are hit with the shocker, accompanied with tiny textual add-ons saying “DRIP” and “JERK” and “SQUEEZE”. Yikes!
(In fact, I was planning to read this comic with my manga-loving daughter. As she was away on a school trip, I decided to begin it without her. Thank God for that!)

Other than the erotic content, I have no complaints with the book. This was true manga in its style, with its black and white illustrations, right-to-left koma, over-the-top facial expressions at times, and typical depictions of one male as masculine and the other male with more dainty and feminine features. The anthropomorphism works wonderfully for the story.

All in all, I didn't like the few scenes that are overly sexual but that's because of my personal preference. For those who don’t mind such content, this is definitely a book I would recommend, especially to mm romance lovers.

4 stars from me. (Which would have been at least 4.5 if those scenes weren’t there. I really loved the rest of the story and I still feel those scenes weren’t necessary to the plot.)

My thanks to Tokyopop and NetGalley for the DRC of “Yagi the Bookshop Goat”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

3.5 stars rounded up

Some of this gave me some Beastars vibes because of the way in which the animals were zoned and interacted with each other. There were definitely elements that I considered to be cute and charming especially the way in which Ookami felt the need to protect Yagi from everything. Technically there is a bit of an age up. I can’t say too much that would spoil the content. I wish that Yagi’s capabilities were explored a little more. Clearly, he’s not just a goat that eats paper. He has some ability to perceive emotions/intentions based on the writer. I feel like we got this cool element but it was in the background of the story the entire time which was slightly disappointing for me as a reader. This is sexually explicit so if that’s not for you, I wouldn’t recommend picking this one up. Overall, it was cute and fast read.

This was super cute and original!!! I absolutely adored the animal-like characters, especially Yagi. What a cutie!! His relationship with Ookami is super sweet and easy to love. That and the setting is a bookshop!! What’s not to like about that?!?!

The art was really good and I loved seeing the different iterations of animals, especially the goats and the cheetah. How adorable!!! Ookami was cute too, but in an, oh my, kind of way.

For some reason, I am just super into gay manga, so this was seriously right up my alley. It is explicit, so if that bothers you, steer clear. Otherwise, I highly recommend this to gay romance lovers who enjoy good art and adorable characters!!

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Tokyopop, and Fumi Furukawa for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased review!!

Thank you, Tokyopop, for the advance reading copy.

I love the concept of this manga so much!

The art sequence, the presentation, the dialogues, the characters: everything just clicked!

And moreover, the plot is based on someone who's not a human character, but also someone who's obsessed with books in a different way! You will know because our main character cannot stay away from books and they are not meant to eat them!

I love the character representation and how the character development is so well done. The characters are so cute! I just ship for them. And I need more of them.

You will adore the romance as much as I do. You cannot ignore this chemistry. One of the characters is a bit insecure and rather a softie (I adore him so much!) and the other character is so patient and understanding. I just want to stare at the illustrations. They are really well done. Kudos to the artist!

I am feeling so single now. Damn.

In Honya no Yagi-kun, a young goat boy who works at a bookstore is the main character.

Herbivores and carnivores often live apart in this world of animal people, and goats aren't even permitted inside book stores since they have a penchant for chomping down on paper. Despite everything, Yagi-kun has been able to land a job in a bookstore run by an amiable wolf. Additionally, Yagi-kun appears to possess a unique talent for classifying books according to taste. Depending on the person, even handwritten messages might have an impact on him.

The story's premise was intriguing, but not much attention was put into creating the universe; instead, it concentrates more on the growth of the romantic relationships between the major characters, which is probably OK given how long the manga is.

Even though there were common themes like resentment and confusion, the romance was pleasant and fluffy with a delicate and adorable graphic style.

Overall, the plot is brief and fluffy, the characters weren't basic and dull, and the premise and setting are new and different.

*I received an ecopy of this book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review.*

I really enjoyed this! The idea was fun. The story was funny and adorable. The art was lovely. The characters, both their designs and their personalities, were so cute. The weakest spot was the writing, in the sense that dialogue and thoughts felt a bit stilted or unnatural at times, but the rest made up for it.

I loved the idea of a fantasy world full of different animal people and a goat with the special ability to taste the story within a book working in a bookshop and struggling not to eat all the books. It was his dream to work in a bookshop, the poor guy, he couldn't help it that books were also so tasty. I also liked how his ability extended to other pieces of paper too, and he could taste the emotions or motivations of the people who wrote on them.

The art was so cute and pretty. I especially liked the look of hair and hands and Yagi's big, expressive eyes. And seeing designs for different types of animals with their little ears or horns or hairstyles was fun.

The characters were so lovable! Yagi was so cute and oblivious and determined. Ookami (the love interest) was protective and kind. I wasn't sure about Shimafukurou at first, but after he brought Yagi out to the bar, I loved him. (I loved the difference in his and Kuma's faces in that scene, how Kuma was sweating and blushing and feeling so awkward, and meanwhile Shimafukurou looked so delighted to be getting the juicy details.)

The story and romance (which was the main focus) were cute too, and sweet. There were also some steamy scenes.

As I said above, the weakest spot was the writing. Dialogue, thoughts, and occasionally progressions from one thing to another (conversations, events) felt kind of stiff, or I felt a bit confused for a moment like there were some steps missing. But it didn't ruin the cuteness or my enjoyment.

Overall, this was an adorable little story that made me laugh and smile!

As soon as I saw the listing for Yagi the Bookshop Goat on NetGalley, I knew I had to request it. I was so surprised when I was granted access to it only a day after requesting, but I was also so excited! I devoured the entire thing in one sitting and I do not regret a single moment of it. The story was so sweet, the art style amazing, and the relationship between Yagi and Ookami was so endearing. It was pretty obvious from early on (to the readers anyway; Yagi was adorably oblivious), that Ookami was the boy from his past, so knowing the significance of that added even more layers to each of their interactions.

While on the surface level, this manga might seem pretty simple and straightforward, there was actually some really cool worldbuilding happening. It kind of reminded me of the movie Zootopia with how the communities were divided between herbivores and carnivores. I think it would be so cool to see more manga set in this world with different characters and relationships. I would read all of them.

The bookshop was a key part of the story, since that’s where Ookami and Yagi work. I loved every scene in the bookshop because I felt like it was so fleshed out and an integral part of their relationship. Books are what connect Yagi and Ookami, so seeing them in that environment was great. Also, I just adored the premise of a goat who loves books and wants more than anything to work in a bookstore, but has trouble with it because he keeps trying to eat the pages. I mean, that’s just adorable. And Yagi was adorable! He was so precious and sweet, and I wanted to give him a big hug. The way he could taste the emotions and feelings behind any piece of paper he ate was so cool! And led to some very interesting situations.

After having been on an anime kick the past couple of weeks, Yagi the Bookshop Goat was just what I was looking for and has totally started a new manga obsession! If you don’t mind a couple of steamy scenes in your manga, I highly recommend this one. It’s so fluffy and cute and easily read in one sitting. I’ve already pre-ordered a physical copy for my shelves because I loved it so much!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

I received this book from Netgalley/Publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I just cannot resist manga about bookstores! I just have to read them! And this one sounded adorable featuring a goat that eats books… but shouldn’t. XD

😍 I had such a laugh each time Yagi ate a book and see him realise that yes, he ate that book. Haha. Sometimes it just stays with bites but it can happen that he just noms the whole book in one go.
😍 I loved that he tried to be better and tried to not eat books. Though maybe he shouldn’t eat receipts and such either to compensate.
😍 Loved how hard Yagi worked! He really is showing that despite being a goat and officially banned from anything with books (which saddens me but I can also understand) he really loves books and works hard to promote them. I mean he really did something amazing with the children’s books section!
😍 The art was really fun and fitted well with the story. The sex scenes were also well done.
😍 That cover is adorable!
😍 I loved Chita, she was just so sweet and I loved how she was there for Yagi and how their friendship really evolved to them calling each other even when they weren’t at work.
😍 It reminded me of a sweeter/nicer Beast Stars along with a big dash of Book Girl. The carnivores/herbivores are living in peace. There are zones. Then there is Yagi eating books and apparently able to taste books in a way that Tokho also could!
😍 Bookstores!! This one takes mostly place in a bookstore!
😍 Yaoi! I hadn’t expected that. Haha. I just thought with charming he meant doing something adorable to get to work. Not charm the wolf to also do some other things!
😍 YAOI WITH CONSENT!! YES LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! I have read so many yaoi and so many are iffy with consent and filled with bad things, but in this one? Consent baby! Two consenting adults doing sexy things! I was just so happy! Even after that one night stand Ookami asked Yagi kindly if he wanted this and that he would go slowly and be careful.
😍 Loved that Ookami casually answered the cards that Yagi had made when they started dating. Had a laugh at the last one (and maybe it was a tad of a worried laugh).

😐 The flashbacks could have gone better. At one point even Yagi gets harassed by someone, he gets saved by Ookami-kun, and then boom flashback to when he gets his clothes/starts working at the bookstore. However, there was no warning it just flowed easily into the harassment story and I had to re-read 3 times to see it was a flashback.

All in all, I need book 2! I want more of the bookstore, I need more of these two and their relationship!

Yagi the Bookstore Goat in an adorable manga with some of the cutest illustrations I've seen in a while. At first glance I thought it was suited for older teens but hell no, its definitely rated mature. The explicit content isn’t that bad but it's definitely there.

Yagi, a young goat from the Herbivore region, works at a bookstore in the Carnivore region under Ookami, a wolf manager, who secretly has feelings for him. After an incident involving an adult magazine (😆🤚) Yagi starts seeing Ookami differently and is having a hard time making sense of Ookami's actions and his own feelings.

I loved this story and the fact that the setting was in a bookstore. All of the characters were charming and overall this was an excellent oneshot. I'm glad I gave it a chance. 5 stars

Thanks to NetGalley and TOKYOPOP for an advanced digital copy to read and review.

Yagi is a goat who dreams of working as a bookseller. But since goats are known for eating books, he has a hard time finding a job. Finally he lands a job in the carnivorous zone and his boss is the wolf Ookami. It seems Yagi has a unique talent for understanding the “essence” of the books he eats. Ookami gets mad if Yagi eats too many books though! I like the art and there is good chemistry between our two main characters. The story is a bit weak but overall I enjoyed it and I will pick up the next volume to see how their relationship progresses.

First, my gratitude to TOKYOPOP and Netgalley for providing me an advanced reading copy of this series in exchange for an honest review.

I found this series weirdly adorable. It is set in an animal world where herbivores co-exist with carnivores. Yagi is a goat with a weird ability to literally devour a book to enjoy its content by taste. He works in a bookshop in the Carnivores zone together with Ookami, the wolf manager. With a few twists and turns, they finally realized their feelings for each other. This is actually more tamed than I thought it would be, despite the cute cover, and that's why I love it. And the art style is also cute!!

Thank you to Netgalley for providing m with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Before I start this review I want to point out that this story is definitely for 18+ audiences because it features two pretty graphic sex scenes. There are only two, and they are not too long, but it should be noted. It wasn't marked as having explicit content on Netgalley so I was a bit surprised as I didn't expect it.

This story takes place in a universe in which all animals live in peace and harmony, but it is still divided into herbivore and carnivore zones. Our main character, Yagi, is a goat who loves books (and not only as food) and who works in a bookstore in the carnivore zone. The bookshop owner, Ookami, gave him the job right away - even though no one else would. So because of that Yagi is trying even harder to do a good job, and prove that a goat can be a bookseller.

I thought this was super cute for the most part. The pacing is pretty fast and the story progresses at lightning speed. I enjoyed the character interactions, I thought they were fun and sweet. As this is very very fast-paced, there is not much time for too much going on but I felt like the characters were solidly fleshed-out, especially for such a short story. I also enjoyed the art style - it was lovely and it really is a strong point of this manga. I really loved the idea of this world - it was super fun and I enjoyed the world-building. Something that was slightly lacking at times, were perhaps the dialogues. They did feel a bit stilted and stiff at times, but overall it wasn't too big of an issue.

All in all, this was cute and enjoyable even if it wasn't my favorite. I would recommend it if you're looking for a cute, fast read - though take into account there are two pretty graphic sex scenes. If you're okay with that and you're interested, this might be for you!

DRC provided by TOKYOPOP via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Representation: queer anthropomorphic protagonists.

Content Warning: violence.

Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawa is an interesting contemporary manga which features anthropomorphic characters designed to look like carnivores and herbivores.
Since he was a young kid, Yagi has always wanted to be a bookseller, but there is one problem he cannot overcome, he is a goat and loves eating paper. Nonetheless, he manages to find work at a bookshop in the carnivore zone, after being rejected by every shop in the herbivore one. Unbeknownst to Yagi though, his boss is whom he owes his love for books as more than delicious treats to eat.

I really, really, really liked the idea behind this manga, but it failed (not completely) in the execution, mostly because of the steamy scenes, which I did not expect and did not care for one bit. I am not averse to them, just to clarify, I just reckon that it would have worked way better without them, being all fluff, fun, hijinks and cutesy moments. That was I expected from the premise. It was so original and cute. It was really a pity to have the flow ruined by the spicy times. The artworks were really nice though.

3.5 rounded up for being adorable and not using the carnivore/herbivore trope in the same "metaphor for sex" way that every other manga does.

I mean, it's still there. But it's more subtle.

Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a gentle, heartwarming story that radiates charm. The characters are delightful and endearing, and the art style enhances the whimsical atmosphere with soft lines and inviting details. The pacing flows smoothly, making it an easy and comforting read from start to finish.

What makes this book shine is its cozy tone—it’s the kind of story that leaves readers feeling warm and content, much like curling up with a favorite blanket on a quiet afternoon. While it may not be groundbreaking, it succeeds beautifully in what it sets out to do: offering a whimsical and tender tale that lingers like a smile.

3,90 Too Adorable!!!!

I'm not giving this more stars just because it's pretty short and not much of a plot, but it's absolutely adorable. For the same reason, it's hard to talk about the story without giving it all away.

Sweet and tender and all the cute you can bear. I obviously have a penchant for anthropomorphized animals, these two were just pure sugar. Not only that, the circle becomes perfect because this is very much about books and bookshops too, a love for books that informs the whole life of the main character...how can you not love that??!!! I wish I could be in bookshops all day too! Yagi loves to read books and he loves to eat them too, he can't help his goat nature after all, he's attracted by their scent and of every paper he ingests, he can 'taste' the stories they contain and the emotions of whomever wrote on that paper.

Sweet Yagi, you were the only one not seeing how jealous of you Ookami was and come one, THAT solution to your hot-and-bothered issue should have told you everything...maybe we should all adapt it when someone's in need of 'help' ahahah!

Sex is a very little fraction of the story at the very end, not that many panels, and most physical details erased, so very low steam levels, but the care Ookami shows throughout the sequence...always checking for consent and level of comfort/pain, always asking permission, saying he wants to take care of Yagi...YES, THAT IS THE WAY, swoon. And the way he looks at Yagi when he's engrossed in reading...lovely couple, I hope I can meet them again. Ookami, you can let go more often, I'm sure Yagi will appreciate!

Thank you to Netgalley for an early ARC of Yagi the Bookshop Goat. All thoughts on this manga are my own. This will be released April 12th 2022.

Tokyopop strikes again with another marvelous, one-volume, Boy's Love manga. If I am ever having a bad day, Tokyopop's Love x Love manga are wonderful pick-me-ups with all the fluff and cuteness. Yagi the Bookshop Goat did not disappoint one bit and is one of the best Love x Love releases yet.

This short-volume manga follows Yagi, a young billy goat, who has always dreamed of working in a bookstore; however, everyone knows that goats just love paper. Yagi is turned away from all the bookstores in the herbivore community. Wanting to fulfill his dream, he heads over to the carnivore community and begs a Wolf bookstore owner for. a job and is given the opportunity. Oh and Yagi also happens to have a talent where if he eats a book he can get a hint of the book's "flavor" or themes if you will. Soon Yagi is falling for his Wolf boss and things become complicated from there.

This entire standalone manga just made me so happy. Yagi was an adorable, innocent, little billy goat who has a passion for reading, yet also has a passion for eating the books he loves. It's a serious personal dilemma.

I also found the whole world interesting. You have the herbivore community full of goats, pigs, bunnies, etc., and the carnivore community of bears, cheetahs, wolves, owls, and other amazing animals. The whole theme and idea of the manga was unique. Something new and interesting that captures you right away. I would love to see more manga volumes based in this world.

The romance, while not as unique as the world, was super cute and fluffy. I love Yagi and Ookami, they are both such cinnamon rolls!

I highly recommend this volume to everyone who wants a cute, fluffy, and unique read all in one sitting.

Thank you very much to Netgalley for this ARC!!

In this manga we find that the world has been divided in two territories: the carnivores and the herbivores. Our two main characters are Yagi, a goat who from a very young age knew he wanted to be a book seller, and Ookami, a sweet wolf who is the owner of the bookshop Yagi works at (and not so casually finds himself being in love with our cute goat). Yagi has been struggling to find a job in the book world as he often ends up eating the books he has to take care of. However, this boy goat has a special talent as he is able to taste the flavour of the papers he eats. Ookami lets him work in his bookstore and from then on we see their relationship grow as they interact, find about their own childhood background and reveal their most hidden feelings for each other.

This manga was honestly so cute and wholesome, but it felt way too short for me :( I would have liked it to have a bit more of yearning and leave the characters deal with their feelings for a longer time before they confessed. However, I will not deny that it is such a swift and fresh read. It does include two explicit sexual situations, but these are justified and make total sense in the narrative so it didn’t bother me at all. I love myself a story with childoon to strangers to lovers trope and this has given me it :)) Very recommended for a cute and quick mlm romance story!!

[I received a digital copy from Netgalley for an honest review]

Yagi the Bookshop Goat
by Fumi Furkawa was absolutely adorable. The characters, the art work, the story, I'll be buying myself a copy of this sweet and steamy manga for my shelf when it releases.

This land is divided into a herbivore section and a carnivore section. Yagi the goat just wants to work in a bookshop, but not many people want to hire someone whose going to be eating the merchandise. His boss , a wolf named Ookami, hires him for his love of reading and his ability to smell and taste the stories written. When Ooakami forces him to take 2 weeks after an incident, he's more determined than ever to work at the carnivore bookshop and not just because of new feelings between him and his boss.

Yagi was absolutely precious and I loved the relationship storyline for him and Ookami, which had a bit of a second chance aspect to it. Don't let the fluffy synopsis and cute artwork fool you though, this is an adult manga with Yagi going into what I would compare to as "omega heat" after eating notes written by Ookami causing him to feel the sexual attraction/yearning he feels. I was here for the consent and prep when it came to the intimate scene, which isn't usually present in Yaoi.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

When I first saw this cover and read the description I was so excited to read it.

This concept of a goat who eats books but his dream is to work in a bookstore surrounded by carnivores was just so interesting to me.

The beginning is something I really enjoyed it started really strong and I expected to absolutely love this.

Unfortunately, that did not happen the more the story was progressing the more I found myself caring less.

I feel like something was missing. The pacing was very weird too, characters felt a bit bland and with no personalities just shells of people. Don't get me wrong I get that this is a graphic novel and it does not have to be deep but I just could not make myself care about the characters.

Another thing I'd like to mention is something that's completely my fault, but I expected a wholesome cute story which it was but I have not expected s*xual content. That took me off guard, again though this is my fault for not paying attention when requesting it.

On a positive note, the art is just incredible, the characters were just so beautiful and I am sad that I have not enjoyed it more.

I don't know what I expected when I ordered this, but what I got was really cute.

Definitely did not expect it to be rated mature though lol. I thought it was gonna be fully wholesome, but Tokyopop loves the surprises. I mean the sex wasn't intense in the slightest. It was just more than I what I thought it was going to be.

Anyhoo, this was a really sweet and adorable story about a billy goat who just wants to be a bookseller even though he can't stop eating the books and his strict but kind wolf manager. I thought the premise was interesting, that he can taste feelings and intentions in the books and notes, and the couple was cute. It doesn't really go in that deep and the story felt kind of choppy in places, but I liked it for the most part.

Graphic sexual content

I saw this graphic on sale on daily deals and decided to give it a try. After some time, I kind of got the notion the younger character was a boy and not a girl (both are drawn in a ambiguous way). I was not aware this was a boy with boy romance. Even though they are a wolf and goat, there is an age gap and boss employee dynamic that I could not overlook. The animal factor did not erase the creepiness of the manager Oakami.

This book is graphic in sexual acts and if I'd known, I would've definitely chose differently. I enjoyed the story and the art for those I give 4 stars. I'm at fault here for skimming the synopsis and not researching this properly.

…………. 4.5 stars ………….

This is honestly one of the cutest manga that I’ve ever read! I loved that this took place in a bookshop (there simply aren’t enough books that take place in bookstores 🥰). I loved that Yagi’s dream was to be a book seller and that Ookami was the one to bring that dream to reality. And the way that all the other carnivores adored Yagi was just so cute! I also really liked that this was a little bit of a childhood-friends-to-lovers situation (even if Yagi didn’t recognize Ookami at first). This is getting a four and a half stars. It was just so fun and cute and I would love to see more! 🥰

I go through a lot of BL and GL manga searching for romances, that shows a nice well written romance and also includes some spice that doesn’t fall into straight up romanticized rape and shows actual consent and intimacy of the pair and HELLO!!! I HAVE FOUND IT!

I think Tokyopop is doing amazing things with their content they have been pushing out and next to Replay, this story stands to be one of my favourites. I was so pleased with this and I am so happy with the outcome of this story!

Short and cute and much more spicy than I expected to see, which was nice.
