I love Sebastien de Castell's Greatcoats quartet featuring Falcio, Kest and Brasti. This is labelled Volume 1, so hopefully there are more short stories to come.
I was disappointed not to find Brasti in these pages, but Kest features, and so does my favourite character, Falcio val Monde, once the First Cantor of the Greatcoats and now married, retired, and an expectant father. The Greatcoats are travelling magistrates who dispense the King's justice equipped with a knowledge of the law, a good sword, and a leather greatcoat, armoured and containing many weapons and tricks in its secret pockets. They are not always welcomed, but still manage to dispense the law, sometimes with a judgement, other times with a duel.
There's a new major character, the corpulent Estevar Valejan Duerisi Borros, who is the magistrate often called in when something of the supernatural hangs around a crime. Falcio is featured in two stories, Kest in one, and Brasti none at all. There's also a story featuring Murielle de Vierre, The King's Thorn, who turned traitor and is now looking for redemption. You don't have to have read the four Greatcoat books, but I thoroughly recommend that you do because they are brilliant.
Audiobook
Narrated by Joe Jameson, Kristin Atherton and Chris Humphries
Eight short stories set in the world of De Castell's Greatcoats, mostly set after the events in the first four Greatcoats novels, witrh one interesting exception. Falcio - the main character in the novels - only appears in two of these stories, but he's mentioned a lot. We're introduced to Estevar Boros, whom we meet again in another (later) book, Crucible of Chaos. Kest (one of Falcio's companions from the novels) also appears, this time in an advisory capacity rather than as a duellist/magistrate. There's plenty of swash and buckle and some deep introspection. Plus there's an interesting epilogue containing the author's notes on the stories and his rationale behind them. All the readers are excellent, especially Joe Jameson.
