David Radcliffe, an eye surgeon, and his wife, Kathy, returning from a medical convention in San Francisco, bypass a highway accident by turning off onto a country road which winds through farm country near Eugene, Oregon. Totally lost when their car’s GPS fails from what appears to be a cyber blackout, they come upon ELDERVILLE, a town nowhere noted on their highway map, and with a populace they soon discover is made up entirely of old people. What begins as relief turns to terror as the couple are entrapped by a bizarre scheme to prevent them from leaving.
Roy Innes is a retired eye physician and surgeon. An early penchant for the arts, buried for years in the world of science, was rekindled on retirement. He enrolled in the Humber School for Writers program and under the mentorship of literary notable, Olive Senior, wrote his first novel, Murder in the Monashees, released in 2005 to excellent reviews. Equally at home in the city or the wilds, Innes is an avid hunter, a lover of classical music and, belied by his skinny frame, a gourmand. He lives on Gabriola Island, B.C. with his wife and his daughter’s cat. Update 2015--the cat died.
This was my first time reading a book from Mr. Innes but the plot had me fully intrigued. So I decided to give it a try. I have actually reviewed quite a few books but most of them are typically audio books. And this is actually the first book I have literally sat down and read in I can’t remember when. I was surprised at just how fast I finished it. I was able to read entire story in just couple hours in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. I hate when others give away spoilers in reviews but I will definitely say it didn’t end the way I expected it to and up to the very end I kept expecting for something else to happen. But that’s not a bad thing. I truly enjoyed the story and definitely recommend it to others. It kind of gave me M.Night Shyamalan and King vibes. And I will without a doubt be adding Mr.Roy Iness to my list of authors to keep an eye out for when online and in bookstores.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
a lot of terror was packed into those pages, about a little less than a 90 minute read for me. Creepy and suspenseful like the movie "No way out" BUT with old people. And always keep a good old-fashioned paper map in the car kids! The main characters were well-rounded as well as how they dealt with the crazy town they found themselves in. I will read more from this author as this was my first by Roy Innes and it did not disappoint. As it was suspenseful in only a way a pro storyteller could pull off.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
