For months, Princess Cistine Novacek of Talheim has contended with the threat looming over her home and secured an alliance that brought peace to the Middle Kingdom at last. But calamity has caught up with her nonetheless - not in her own land, but in the treacherous North. With Talheim spared from a horrific fate, Cistine faces the choice between peace in her homeland or war alongside her new allies.
The princess chooses war.
Now with a ruthless enemy hunting them for the blood they shed and the weapons they carry, Cistine and her allies will fight harder, risk greater, and journey farther than they ever have before, seeking to save everything they love. Even if salvation means paying a cost beyond their darkest dreams.
For on bloody battlefields, in dark mountain halls, in the ancient bones of the world and deep in their own spirits, the battle for Valgard - and all the kingdoms of the world - will be waged.

I cannot overstate how much I love the cabal. Their dynamics, their love for each other, the banter they have together...they truly are one of the best examples of found family out there, who have shared so much that they're inseparable. Every book, Dugan effortlessly weaves another layer into their history.
It's amazing just how much Cistine has grown. She has some truly awe-inspiring moments in this book, and I love seeing how strong and confident she is compared to where she was when we first met her in book 1.
This book was also heartbreaking because the cabal does suffer some big blows, and it's easy to feel yourself grieving alongside them. Another truly wonderful book, Renee can really do no wrong and this book is further proof of that.
I was given an ARC in exchange of my honest opinion about this book but f***ck I would have given a kidney for it!! Aaaahhhhhhhhhh.
The perfect continuation to the story.
A freaking ride of pain on top of more pain and more pain. The whole book is pain. Do not read if you're not ready for pain. Because you will hurt. And then it will end. And you will crave the next book like bloodwights crave augments. You will be hooked, in the need of more, unable to string coherent sentences together.
Because that ending. That ending will skin you alive. And then the epilogue will glue your skin back together with hot glue. Too hot. Too painful. Too much aaaahhhh and a bit of aaagggg and a lot of cursing out loud if you have a foul mouth like mine.
We love a and hate you so much Renee💖🥰
That's it. I can't give a better review because I need to curl up and cry myself to sleep.
Oh my gosh this book was so good. There’s your review.
I am absolutely in love and wholly invested in every single one of these characters and I swear if we lose someone or there is not a happy ending I will RIOT. Though I have faith things will be fine. I hope. There’s copious amounts of intense, page turning action. Injured love ones, grief, coping with loss, and all the emotions. Balanced beautifully with moments of quiet kisses, communication over past grievances, and pushing forward as best as possible.
This series doesn’t cease to impress me. I loved the pacing on this one and it might be my new favorite of the series. I liked the reveals, the connections and seriously everything about it.
I’m trying to maintain vagueness because this far into a series I don’t want to spoil for everyone. So just know, I LOVE IT AND WANT YOU TO READ IT TOO.
Overall audience notes: - Fantasy + Romance - Language: very little - Romance: closed door - Violence: high - Trigger/Content Warnings: battle themes, loss of loved ones, physical and magical altercations, near death experiences
Writing a review on a fifth book in series is challenging on multiple levels. Spoilers, of course. But it’s hard to do justice to the story without communicating all the rich background, intricate plots, and pure setup that goes into creating an absolute gem like this book. Seriously, this book is, in my humble opinion, the best in the series so far, and I think it will be hard to top. Admittedly, at first I was frustrated by just how hard everything is for everyone in the book. But its heartrending twists and turn are precisely what make this series so fantastic, and its persistent, admirable characters so loveable. It was exactly that blend that made the crescendo of this part of Princess Cistine and her cabal’s journey so freaking epic. And that ending? GIMME THE NEXT BOOK! Seriously. I finished this book in the middle of the night and immediately binge purchased all the paperbacks (don’t ask me how I hadn’t bought them before – I should’ve). Thankfully the next installment is out in June. So if you haven’t read this amazing indie fantasy series, start NOW and thank me later.
This was a rather intense read. Our poor cabal has gone through A LOT!
This takes place a few months after the previous book and starts with Cistine to see what she has been up to. Once she feels like she has done what she can in her home, she leaves to join her cabal. When she joins them, though, it's a bit awkward since no one seems to want her there, and they all seem downtrodden. While she's trying to pick up from where they left off previously, they also are having to deal with the current war, deal with their personal issues, fight off a new monster and save kidnapped children. They are struggling to figure out a way to end the war, and to bring peace to their kingdom.
This was not an easy read with the war, and how everyone is dealing with their personal demons, it's rather sad what some are having to deal with, such as Aden, Quill, and poor Maleck! I really missed the cabal and was happy to read about them again!
My only qualm, and the reason I didn't give this story 5 stars is because of Cistine. I've always struggled with liking her character, and I felt like she really grew up until Lightfall and I actually started to like her, but then she seemed to revert to her old self in this book, the rather spoiled princess. I was also a bit confused why she even went home, and ended up leaving when I thought the point was to keep her safe, but that's probably just me reading too fast and missing the point of that.
Aside from that, I really enjoyed the story, and I do love the rest of the characters! I love the entire cabal, especially Quill and Maleck. All of them are such great characters and have to deal with some heavy stuff and I just want to hug them all. I just want the next book because I need to know what will happen to my favorite characters! Thank you to Renee for a free digital copy to read!
Phenomenal. This was so action packed was on the edge of my seat throughout. The cabal has been through so much. I can’t wait to see where it goes next (but also still terrified).
These characters are just going to live in my head for awhile. I’ve cleared rooms for them. It’s already done. ❤️😭❤️ Bloodsinger had tension and pain and laughter and love and I felt it all deeply. (I literally threw my fist in the air during the epilogue.) I felt like this book had a slightly different feel to it—war will do that 😭—and I still really enjoyed it. I will be ready to snag the next book as soon as it’s available! And in the mean time, Cistine and the cabal will just run wild in my head. ❤️
I was honestly expecting this to hurt more, but I did watch Renee's Q+A for Bloodsinger's release and she did warn that she uses (my favourite) Maleck as her emotional punching bag, so I guess I was prepared for heartbreak.
This was action packed from the get go, and I think a lot of the mystery is slowly starting to be revealed. I did find the conclusion to this book a little rushed in places, but then I know we'll get it all explained in book 6, so I'm not going to complain. Also the story, the characters and the writing are flawless so I'll let whatever small qualms I have slide.
The way The Starchaser Saga has a hold on my heart. I thought this series was dark already, but war brings the heartbreak to a whole new level. This book is fast-paced and brutal, with plenty of grief and loss but also love.
Renee Dugan does an incredible job of portraying how war affects each character differently and challenges the cabal as a whole, and the reader is right there on the emotional journey. My goodness, Maleck.
It’s hard to thoroughly review a fifth book in a series without spoilers, but know that while this book is bleak and absolutely broke me over and over again, there is somehow a little glimmer of hope to hold onto.
Wow, I can't begin to say how much I adored this book! I was so lucky to get an ARC (a physical one no less) and I regret not savoring more.
The cover was just stunning and it is definitely my favorite so far! I also must admit that this title is my favorite too! Bloodsinger has such a lovely ring to it (definitely not murderous at all...).
Cistine is separated from the Cabel at the beginning of the book but is quickly reunited with them. However, Cistine feels left out because she missed so much of the war already. We see Cistine and Thorne go through some stressful times within their relationship as well as brave the problems outside of it.
Speaking of Thorne, I absolutely loved his perspective in this book! We see him go through so much (even though he really needs a break, take a nice hot bubble bath with some nice bath salts) and he really matures as a leader.
I could go on for years about each individual character's development, but I'll end it here for the sake of your eyes. Each character in this book continues the wonderful development that Renee Dugan began in the first book and there isn't one single character that doesn't serve a purpose.
I was absolutely devastated by how Renee Dugan absolutely decimated everyone's happiness and I really hope that things get better for the Cabel in the next book.
Once again I am blown away by Renee Dugan's gorgeous tale of found family, overcoming obstacles, heart-warming romance, and (of course) magic.
How did this book not break me? I can't form coherent words right now because so many precious characters were broken and built up and broken again. The action and danger heightens in Bloodsinger, and no one in the precious cabal is safe! T.T So many times I paused while reading to admire and reread Renee's descriptions and her masterful way with words. This book is a testament to friendship, love, and the realities of war. And now I have to wait HOW long for the next book? My heart!!

I’ve decided to bring you along on my reading journey of The Starchaser Saga by @reneeduganwriting. These aren’t really going to be reviews, just my random thoughts while reading. I’ll do a series review once I’m finished. I’m going to try to make these as non spoilery as possible, but read at your own risk.
I started this immediately after Lightfall and read for 4 hours straight 🤪 this one was none stop action and I didn’t want to put it down.
Bloodsinger Book 5 - “Hello, Cistine” 🐦⬛ - 🎶 Reunited and it feels so good 🎶 sorta - Balmond 😩 - ⛄️ - The cabal is driving me nuts. You can’t be mad at someone for doing what you basically forced them to do 🤦🏼♀️ - “You’re a light from beyond black shores, Wildheart…you’re a beacon. You guide us home." - Tatiana 😭😭 - K…what?! - Duh. - “I did warn you I was distracting you.” Called that one 😕 - I think I know something but I can’t tell you because it will spoil it. It has to do with M 🩸 ⚪️…hopefully I’ll remember what this means later to see if I was right or not. - Some people just need to stay dead in this series 😅 - They really need to learn to communicate better (don’t worry, no miscommunication “trope”) - Come on, Darkwind!
Once again, Renee has blown me away! War brings so much heartbreak and devastation to the cabal. No one is left unscathed. So many raw emotions, confessions, and reveals. I love these characters and their love for each other.
I was given the privilege of an advance copy for a review but all opinions are my own.
“...they screamed her Name like salvation, a prayer pushing back the shadows.
Where to start on the EPIC 5th book in The Starchaser Saga?! Honestly, I started tearing up not even eleven chapters in. There were so many epic entrances and heart racing moments that my emotions were high throughout this thoroughly engrossed reading. We are reunited with Cistine making moves, and plotting politically for the good of two kingdoms. We are also reunited with the cabal in the midst of a war, one that they do not appear to be winning. They’re disheartened, exhausted and they miss their Wildheart… We are particularly focused on Aden who is grappling with his self-worth and ghosts from the past. He wants to be a guiding force for the cabal but is holding himself back with low feelings on self-worth.
“You’re worth more than a tally of perfect decisions.”
We also see other beloved members wrestling with the own inner demons and past traumas while facing altogether NEW traumas this war has wrought. They have been through so much and yet they must rally and stay strong to battle sinister forces trying to reshape the world in their own twisted image as well as unforseen foes who just want to watch the world burn.
“You cannot outrun sacrifice. You do not walk away from war with everything you ever wanted…”
This book had me overjoyed, crying in heartbreak, pumping my fist in triumph and saying: “Noooooo whyyyyy?!” I love all of these characters so much and it is so difficult to see them suffer but also so rewarding whenever we seem them triumph! I am SO EXCITED to see what happens next. That cliffhanger… OH EM GEE!!
This book was awesome. I will always love this series. And I’m dying over the epilogue. I need the next one. And the next one. There is so much to look forward to and so much that happened. I love the cabal so much.
This one was difficult for me to get through, it felt dry but also very overwhelming at the same token. The cabal has been through so much, would love some happy times for them too haha
Overall, love this series! I’m going to be sad when it’s over 😢
Renee does it again. Once more she packs in that last 100 pages of cliffhangers and action. There's action throughout, but I always know the end will be a slide off a cliff and I'll wonder for days after what on earth just happened. I know that if people are happy, they won't stay that way. These characters are doing so much and fighting wars on many levels, inside themselves and outside of themselves. For their kingdoms, for their lives, for their selves. It's complicated and beautifully done.
4.5/5: Book 5! Book 5! And wow, did it blow my mind. It is extremely well-paced and very intense, and there’s so much going on. I think the red cover did a really good job signaling the shift in tone (the other covers are cooler colors like blue, purple, and greens, and this one is red and really brings out the intensity of the series)! The writing itself is just as good as ever, and definitely keeps the interest throughout the book. But the tones were also so dark here, and since I feel so close to these characters having the other 4 books, it hurt my soul to read sometimes. In a good way, I guess hahah! So many characters really evolve. Sometimes, Cistine still feels like she has a ways to go, but considering where she was in book 1, she’s evolved a lot. The rest of the cabel also feels effectively layered and developed which I really appreciated. Just wow, am I excited to continue with these characters and see them through the rest of the series. But I’ll also be so sad when it ends…
I have one problem with this book that I cannot excuse. Was it the tortured children? No, because hope remains and I believe Renee Dugan will deliver on it. Was it the part where beloved characters continued to be stolen by the big baddies, the Bloodwights? No, because again, the door was left with the tiniest crack open that things will turn around.
WAS IT THAT MY FAVORITE SHIP SPENT LOADS OF TIME ALONE AND THERE WASN'T A MAKEOUT SESSION LET ALONE A SWOON-WORTHY PECK ON THE MOUTH? That would be it, yes.
But I won't dock a smidgen of a star for it because Bloodsinger kept me hooked, surprised, and while presently heartbroken, still holding out for a happy ending for these characters.
Yet again, Dugan handles her characters, all eleventy hundred of them, and topics that cut right to the heart with extreme care. None of the brutality is for shock value or missing humanity woven in. This was a hard read for me. But hope was not forgotten in this narrative and I look forward to the next two books.
I am a bit shredded emotionally. I say to the author, lovingly, "How dare you?!"
I need the next one immediately :’) The cabal is so dear to my heart, and this author never stops torturing them. However, this one really frustrated me - in good and bad ways. first of all - can thorne and cistine get some alone time please? longest and slowest burn i’ve ever read. and secondly, the audacity of the cabal to be resentful of cistine leaving when they literally sent her away from them… it did not easily make much sense, and neither did thorne’s disappointment in himself about his love for her. that was heartbreaking to me.
This is the first book, in the Starchaser Saga, that I read after my 24 hr-binge of the first 4 books. If I hadn’t taken a month long break after the binge to read this book I’d probably rate it higher.
It wasn’t a bad story by any means. I still enjoyed it. But at this point, being so invested in Cistine and Thorne and having to take a step back from that a bit was sad. I found myself skipping more often than not because it didn’t hold my attention as much as I wanted it to.
OMG I am in PAIN. Ms. Dugan how dare you. I am having so many feels. I love this cabal a whole lot and they're going through so much and just breaking, I can't even ;_; I need book 6 already, I NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING WILL BE OK *vibrates with great intensity*
