Lost to the darkness, searching for the strength to survive.
How the hell am I supposed to get out of here?
When the light finally falls on the horizon and hope dances along my fingertips, another wave of fear crashes into me.
I’m drowning in a sea of monsters. Frankie, Lucienda, Reece… me? Am I becoming one of them?
My life as I know it will never be the same. I must overcome more obstacles than I care to imagine and learn to deal with the blood staining my soul.
Trusting in those who offer me the world will prove difficult as I try to keep everyone safe. Luna is my rock and pillar of strength, even if she wants to force me to see the bigger picture.
Learning what family truly means and choosing my own path is anything but easy.
A single touch, a whispered promise, and eyes filled with emotion. Suckers make it hard to do the right thing.
I have grown, burned, and risen again. Now, I have to find a way to piece myself back together again.
I will fight for me. For my freedom. For my future.

Freedom is a 92k Reverse Harem contemporary romance novel. Book five in the Featherstone Academy Series, and the second book in Red’s duet. Full of steamy scenes including MFMM, this book may also include scenes that may be considered triggers to some, including physical assault. Recommended for 17+.

I'm going to be reviewing both Red and Freedom throughout this.

Let me first start off by saying that I love K.C. Kean and that I think for a first series she did an incredible job. She really put her heart and soul into Featherstone.

I LOVE Red.. but I have a good few issues to note with her story.

The most important being that her books, Red and Freedom, read like she was an afterthought in her own story. Kinda sucks when a side character becomes a main character but is still written like a side character.

KC's first three books; My bloodline, Your bloodline, Our bloodline were beyond incredible and breath taking. They had me screaming over the plot twists, squeeling at the happy moments and gripped with every word on each page. They left me with extremely high expectations for Red and Freedom. I couldn't wait to read them and live through the emotional rollercoaster all over again but with different characters brought to life. However..I truly wish I could say the same for Jess' tale. I was happy while reading these books, because let's face it, K.C. is an incredible writer. But ultimately it left me feeling "meh" at the same time. I wasn't begging for more.

Red's story begins by rehashing Luna's aforementioned bloodline books. Immediately this annoyed me. It was like a sped up version of the bloodline trilogy just with a new perspective and a half hearted attempt at including a stalker. I say half hearted because it was obvious from the get-go who it was and the fact that nobody in the series seemed to catch on despite all their 'awareness' and 'skills' was a huge "wtf" moment for me.

I felt the care and devotion that was given to bringing the Aceholes to life in the bloodline books just wasn't given to Jess' WAM (West, Aidan and Maverick) sandwhich. I wanted more for them. The whole book felt like it was centered around Luna all over again with a quickly scripted subplot about Jess and her guys. I feel like I got to see more of Red's personal growth throughout Luna's story than I did Red's own. It threw me for a loop and left a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm also annoyed that Oscar's character was transformed into an overbearing overly protective asshole who quite frankly didn't let Jess live. He was as quick to make decisions for Jess as her horrible Mother was. We knew he looked at Jess like a sister and that he would protect her at all costs but in Red he was no longer the funny, lighthearted but protective older brother figure we've come to love. Instead he quickly became a character I would have been more than happy to skip over.

As for Freedom.. this is where I'm thoroughly disappointed, honestly.

This whole book felt like everyone reacting to the things happening to and around Red, rather than us getting her input.

*Spoiler alert*

Once more Jess was given the back seat in her own story. I completely understand that not every character should face horrific things.. but after reading Luna's story and seeing what she went through with the pyramid, the games and Totem. Reading the moments that had us holding our breath, gripping the edge of our seats trying to read as fast as possible so we could find out if everything would be okay.. To an underlying plot with the Russians that was barely dived into (I get that she wanted to leave things open for future books but why bother mention them if you're not going to dive into them at all), pushing her guys away, focusing the story on Luna and the Aceholes mostly doing all the saving instead of her guys along with her "terrifying" mother trying to control things from afar and Red just giving in it was yet another "wtf" moment.

The writing was good, but the plot fell short in the end. I wish we could have gotten so much more out of this duet, I really do. I feel like Red and her WAM sandwhich deserved better. I hope at some point in the future they will get the attention they deserved.

The books are worth a read if you're curious about Red and her guys, and the funny moments are brilliantly written. Just don't hold them to the same standard as the bloodline trilogy.

I've explained in another review about hating inconsistencies in book series and I came across a huge one in this. So Jessica, who's the heroine in Red and Freedom, loves reading reverse harems. She's always on her Kindle in several scenes of these books. In one particular scene, K.C Kean plugs her own published series as one of the books that Jess is reading. I don't care about that because to be honest, that's great PR for your own books when a character you're writing is reading your other written works. But, the thing is..Jess was reading the All Star series. And if you haven't read that trilogy, SPOILER, Roman from the Featherstone series (another series written by Kean which is connected to Jess's world) makes an entry towards the end of that book.

So in Freedom, Jess is reading the third book in the All Star series, a completely fictional series in her world, where her best friend's husband (Roman) shows up to assassinate someone. What in the "multiverse shit" did I even read?!!!

I don't think anyone realised this.. probably not even K.C Kean. I get that basically everything is fictional but like seriously, how do you even miss something like that?!

This is the last book in the Featherstone Academy series. It shows how much Jess has changed, grew, and became such a strong female character. You watch her battle her family and her own self-doubt to become the person she truly wants to be. She frees herself from her own shackles more ways than one and finally starts to love herself. All the while, her three amazing guys are showing her that they will love her through it all.

Luna is one bad a** babe. I love that she can take care of her own, but also be vulnerable. Her character growth in the series was beautiful. I fell in love with all her men right along with her. Jessica (Red) is THE bestie every girl needs. I have loved her character since the first time she was mentioned. She bloomed in this series, and I loved every minute of it. Her guys are everything she was missing. This was the first series that I read by this author, and I can’t wait to see what else I can get into by her. This series also end kinda open ended, I wouldn’t say cliffhanger... but you know there will be more to this story. I AM HERE FOR IT!!!

This is the conclusion to the duet for Jess, Maverick, West, and Aiden. And it was a perfect conclusion in my opinion. This book picks up right where we left off in Red. And the action doesn’t stop. Jess continues to face battles when it comes to her family and her guys. But she keeps getting stronger and fighting back. She doesn’t give up even when she thinks she should. I was proud watching her character grow and become her own person. And her guys….they are so in love and supportive of Jess. Even if they would rather wrap her in bubble wrap and keep her safe from everything and everyone. They respect her as well. That made me love them even more. The mutual respect and love they all have for each other. Even though none of them thought about a relationship like they have, they somehow make it work. There is drama and action in this book just like the previous ones. Luna and her men are present as well as the whole extended family. This author came out of nowhere for me last year with the Featherstone Academy and I am glad I stumbled upon her. I highly recommend this series!

KC Kean has done it again! I started my journey at Featherstone Academy with My Bloodline and I fell in love with this series for so many reasons. The characters, I don’t even know where to begin. KC has a way with creating her characters that draws you in from the very beginning. BUT she doesn’t stop there. The world she built for this series is so intense and twisted you can’t help but get sucked in.

After I finished Our Bloodline I was in such a book hangover that I wanted to turn around and reread the whole series…. I was just not ready to let go of the characters…. Then KC announced she was going to give Luna’s best friend Red (who is awesome as it is in the previous books) her own story and I was ecstatic!

So… I of course had to continue with the next book Red and it did not disappoint. We get to know Red (Jessica) in a completely different way. We learn about her background, her family life, and her struggles. We also get to see her grow into herself and become a fierce woman who fights for who and what she wants. She learns to love herself which is huge. Her guys are the perfect blend for her.

Freedom picks up right where Red leaves off and it is just the beginning of all the twists and turns to come in this book. My hate for Red’s mother only grows in this book. That lady is some kind of crazy! Red is put through some serious challenges and at times starts to fall back into her old ways of not fighting for herself, but she quickly finds herself. She not only has her guys, but Luna and her guys at her back through it all. I really like the relationships between the two groups and how even Luna’s guys continue to fight for Red. They have really built a family. We also get to see a lot of growth from West, Aiden, and Maverick. Let’s talk about the WAM sandwich… Um YES PLEASE! The scenes in this book are fire!

This book… had so many hints about relationship progression that I wanted to hear more about. Oscar and Parker were closer in this book and I’m selfish and I want more. Haha. The book wraps up nicely but also sneakily is open for more if she decides to continue the series later. I really hope she does give us more....eventually ;)

This book had everything I felt was missing from the first one so naturally, I loved it! Red is finally able to prove that while she has no problem leaning on her found family for help and support, she is an independent boss queen who is able to take all of her training and use it to take care of business herself when it comes down to it! It was also great watching her whole family go absolutely feral for her, even when everything was fine the fact that she had so many people ready to go to war for her and her family was so heartwarming. It was everything she deserved and I was so happy to see her finally accept it!

That beginning really broke my heart though, I know she was trying to protect everyone but oh man that emotional pain was so hard to read, I was truly hurting for all of the guys. But thankfully, when things finally got back on track their sexual chemistry picked up right where they left off and it was absolutely delicious! 🤤 Their group chat and general banter and teasing had me dying of laughter and watching Red's harem get comfortable with Luna's was everything I didn't know I needed. Their energies just bounced off of each other in the best and most entertaining ways! I also loved that extra couple we got right at the end, they seemed perfect for each other from the second they met and while it happened very fast, I was so hoping that we would get to see them together! ❤️

I do think that at this point in KC's writing journey she was still solidifying her style/niche so plot wise Featherstone in general was a bit more straightforward than I'm used to from her as there weren't as many plot twists that I didn't already see coming. I will say that will all of the seeds she planted throughout the series as a whole, I'm shocked that everyone has been so patient in regards to the next spin off! After all that we learned I am so ready to jump back into this world in March to see some fresh Italian blood get added to the mix! 😏

Where do I start... this series it’s my all time favourite book series and I’m totally gutted it’s come to a close (well for now anyways).
KC Kean you are an amazing writer, this book is so detailed I honestly fell into the Featherstone world. Those twists and suspense were fantastic and I can’t not mention the off the charts steamy scenes... omg the combat room - wow!
I love Red and her three suckers, their highs and lows throughout the book was great. Loved seeing the softer side to West, Maverick and Aiden, but also their strength in protecting Jess.
Love that Luna and her Aceholes were front and centre in this book too, my fav is Oscar - love his smart mouth. Like in the fu#k, Marry, kill game.
My fav quote in the whole book was “It’s not real if you haven’t sealed it with your dick,” perfect for this series!
Overall a fantastic book and hoping in the future (fingers crossed 2022) we see more Featherstone books, maybe the introduction of new academy students with Luna, Red and the guys leading them/in charge of their next threat - please.

KC Kean - what a great story Red / Jessica has. This story is truly her own and it was perfect - it is not a piggy bag off Luna which authors often to when they produce stories - so awesomesauce to you!!.

She went through so much in this book - I was so proud to watch her grow with strength with the ending to her story. She stumbles a little bit along the way and I wanted to throw my kindle a few times with all the blocks she came up against. But she got there in the end with her WAM.

I loved Aiden’s one liners they were just too funny and his sweet side as well. It was great to watch Maverick and West grow as well.

“Luna, I told you there was someone else after we checked out Kai together before the party, remember? She’s my beautiful and we’re her suckers.”

WHAT A RIDE!

In Freedom; the conclusion to Jessica, Maverick, Aiden and Wests story everything is wrapped up in a beautiful conclusion! The Featherstone world that KC Kean created is original and entertaining!

“You are my everything sunshine. I’m going to take care of you like my life depends on it, miss you like a hole in the head when I’m away, make you smile like it’s my job, and love you so hard you’ll never question it.”

When I finished Luna’s trilogy I was chomping at the bit for Jessica story!  And boy did KC Kean deliver.  I enjoyed the characters, the plot and the romance (and the steam!)- Nothing felt forced or incomplete.
Thank you so much for this series KC Kean! Featherstone academy is definitely a series that I will reread often.

Freedom is the conclusion of Jess’s duet, and can not be read as a standalone.

Spoilers below.

Red’s duet was much like Luna’s trilogy—far too long for no reason. I don’t mind books that are super long as long as it is for a good reason, adding depth to characters and adding necessary details to the plot that weren’t there before.

What do we know about Red? Her mother is an awful person. Her father loves her but never attempts to save her from her mother’s cruelty until her mother attempts to force her into an arranged marriage. Other than that, we aren’t really given much information. Her mother has a bloodline that was part of Featherstone, but other than a few mentions, that’s never fully explained, other than for Jess to be able to shock the guys with her shooting skills.

What do we know about West? He was initially set up in an arranged marriage with Luna and Roman, but only ever felt friendship with Luna. He’s a sniper for Featherstone, and he teaches at the academy. He has a grandmother who was entertaining and sassy.

What do we know about Aiden? We first met him in Luna’s book, and he says he only likes men, but apparently that’s forgotten and ignored so awkward MM scenes can be added to the story. His family deals in drugs and smeggs, supplying all sorts of products to their fellow classmates. He and his twin sister have parties where all of those things are readily available. Beyond that, we know nothing.

What do we know about Maverick? He teaches a class at the academy. He and West are friends. He pushes people away and wants nothing to do with emotions. His words can slice someone open with the venom he laces into them. He does come to terms with what he and the others share with Jess, but in terms of anything explaining why he was so cold at first, he's granted a few moments, and that’s the extent. More time was spent on it during West’s internal monologue than when Maverick actually shared the reasons. One paragraph, and that’s it.

There were a few moments where the characters brought out emotions in me, but for the most part, I felt nothing for them. This story is completely lust and sex driven. Sure, there’s supposed to be this whole crazy world where criminals are sent to this college and they are taught more about their bloodlines," which are never really detailed in a way that brings them to life.

I have no problem living in a world that, in reality, makes no sense, but I need the author to make me feel as though I’m there. I can become immersed in a fantasy world where werewolves and vampires feel as though they are real, but in order to do that, the author has to set the scene, so to speak. What the rules of the world are, why they are that way, and all the things that contribute to people feeling as though they are there That wasn’t at all the case in this series.

Other than basic references to people being sent on missions, the whole "The Ring" thing, and the whole nonsense with the games, not many details are laid out to make it even remotely possible to give the reader an understanding of how things work inside this world. These insane things are tossed out, but it always seems like they're out of nowhere because they're never explained further. It was just so many huge things that were brought into the story and dropped in at random with seemingly no legitimate reason. Maybe it would make more sense if the world itself had ever been built properly, but four books in and nothing about this world really makes much sense, other than there being a constant need to drop dramatic events for the sake of a shock impact on readers.

The use of British English was more toned down than in the previous books, but it wasn’t enough to make it less distracting. Americans surely don’t run around calling everyone a "nobhead," and a Google search would have done wonders in finding an American alternative.

The chemistry between Jess and each of the guys was scorching, and I wish that had been explored more instead of how they seemed to go from realizing they had a physical connection to then pushing each other away, then the complete opposite—they were all consumed by one another. There wasn’t a moment where they took time to really get to know one another; it just went from one thing to another, and when they were together, the only thing they explored was the physical connection.

There was no inclination whatsoever that Maverick was bisexual, and like with the previous books in the series, it seemed that it was added merely for the sake of MM action and nothing else. There was never a moment where he insinuated being attracted to men, and yet all of a sudden he’s making comments that come completely out of nowhere, much like Oscar.

They in no way fit the characters as they are portrayed. There’s no chemistry between them; there are no longing looks or flirty words, it’s all immature comments and forced situations that are awkward and cringeworthy.

I think this series had potential, and if more had been put into building the world and adding some depth to each of the characters, it would have been much more enjoyable. This would be more suited for someone who is wanting to read some smut and isn’t really concerned about a storyline because essentially that’s what you get, and each book is more than 500 pages, and what you walk away with is a mish mash of events that don’t make sense, and some hot moments that are ruined by forced and awkward MM steam that’s as cringeworthy as the non-development of this world that should have been set inside the UK if there wasn’t going to be any effort in making the characters fit within the setting.

Another amazing, action packed book from this amazing author.
Freedom starts off from where Red finishes and it really does not disappoint, it's full of action, romance, laugh out loud moments especially with Mav and Oscar and beautiful family and friendship moments. I really love the friendship with Luna and Red no matter what they always support eachother. Reds character shines in this book and she finally finds who she is and I loved it.
Although I'm sad it's finished i really hope at some point the beautiful K.C KEAN writes some more of this series.

Freedom is Jess’s second book in the Featherstone Academy series and I was so happy to see her get her happily ever after. It picks up after the cliffhanger from Red and hits the ground running with the action.

Jess makes some upsetting decisions but they make sense based on her background and upbringing. I’m glad she has great men and friends in her life to convince her of her worth and steer her towards love. KC Kean did a great job with this and I’m hoping we haven’t seen the end of Featherstone!

My goodness, KC Kean has given me one crazy book hangover! Like the closer I came to the end, the more anxious I became! Gah, Red is my spirit animal, I love how she’s an epic reader and smut slut. I love how people underestimate her and then she leaves them with their jaw on the floor proving them wrong. Watching her and her men all bond left me swooning and also sweating bullets because they were straight fire! Holy cow can KC Kean bring that heat!! I need more Featherstone Academy like now!!

We were tossed right back in to the Featherstone world and I absolutely loved it. Jess was kidnapped and being beaten while Maverick, Aiden, & West were going crazy trying to find her. I was excited to see Jess defend herself and fight back. The her lunatic of a mother shows up with a plan to force Jess into marriage with Reece. This book was nonstop action. The group is battling things from the past and trying to manage their new feelings for one another while being attacked from every direction. It was amazing. I’m so sad it’s over.

So, I’m still celebrating the fact that I received an arc for this book! I’ve been a KC Kean fan since she started releasing the Bloodlines series and I have to say that every book gets better! Red’s story is heartfelt, funny and steamy! And the guys……*drools and wonders how I can get me a WAM sandwich*

Freedom gave you nothing but heart as our favorite girl learns how to embrace her relationships and learns what she deserves. I giggled, I worried and I celebrated as KC took me on the Freedom ride.

This is one of my first 5 star reads of the year and I am beyond excited to see what’s next!

Another series over and I’m still left wanting more from KC! Jess, Mav, West, and Aiden have such an amazing and loving dynamic. The balance each other out perfectly and all of Red’s men push her just enough to become the true warrior she was meant to be. I loved that Luna and our beloved Aceholes were included throughout the end of the journey and the wrap up was absolutely perfect! Of course I’m wanting more, but what good book doesn’t do that to a reader?

All the feels at Featherstone Academy!

"𝓛𝓸𝓼𝓽 𝓽𝓸 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓭𝓪𝓻𝓴𝓷𝓮𝓼𝓼, 𝓼𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓬𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓯𝓸𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓽𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓰𝓽𝓱 𝓽𝓸 𝓼𝓾𝓻𝓿𝓲𝓿𝓮."

The emotion i am feeling at the end of Featherstone Academy & Red's story is unfrigginreal! I actually have never felt so damn attached to a selection of characters. Each and every character from Luna's journey to Red's journey enables you to connect with them on a different level.

I laughed, cried, gasped throughout and i felt every emotion going. Watching Red grow throughout was the most beautiful journey, her confidence, sassyness, softness & fierceness is mesmerising!!

Maverick, Aiden & West are swoonworthy and will leave your heart aching and feeling complete all at the same time.  The drama & twists and turns within this book is enticing & damn it's go go go from the start.

Watching Red nuture her badassary style & vibe is HOT. Add Luna to the mix and there best friend goals and I'm girl crushing!

I am not okay to say goodbye to this series. Kc Kean snuck into my heart & will not be leaving anytime soon!

Amazing conclusion to the series

I'm kind of emotional right now, it's always the way when you say goodbye to characters and world's you've grown attached to. Saying that it's lovely that the author left the door open to return in the future. With the few threads left out there it's a distinct possibility and I'm here for it.

Red had been an amazing support character and I was thrilled when she got her book and her guys, gosh that ended on a cliffie didn't it? Well this book kicks off right from that point and it was amazing. Red has such inner strength and I love it when her bad ass comes out. But at the heart of it she's the tender soul of the series and gives it it's heart, and that remained the case in this book. Her guys are perfect for her, I can't say too much about them as it's like playing favourites....but Mavericks my guy!

I love literally every character in this series, Rafe and JuJu may be my fave supporting family members ever. Shout out to Luna and the guys because you can't help but love them all.

This book had everything you could want in a send off to the series, at it's core it's a book about the family you choose and what you are willing to do for them.

my time i more important to me

i have a lot of issues with the jess’s spin off. i really liked luna’s books. i don’t like spin offs in general so i was going into this book with low expectations but omg not so low.

if luna and red were such bffs why jess didn’t tell her about reece from the beginning and about threats
i liked red better in luna’s books

maverick started off with being an asshole and not in a fun way, he was a chauvinistic dick to her and after that i struggled to see him in another light.

at least there were not any rules agains students and tutors so that’s plus.

oscar was overkilling “big brother act”. it was funny at first but jess is a grown woman and she didn’t need such attention.

i couldn’t understand if she’s stupid or immature. she’s a pick me girl😫😫😫😫
she tried to be smart but she failed spectacularly.
she went with every possible stereotype: thinking she’s not important because of her insecurities, sacrificing herself like she’s some kind of martyr. she’s so annoying to me rn

i dnf and don’t regret it.

Not as good as the first three books

The two books about Red had the challenge of fitting in with the first three books because the stories overlap in the timeline. This was obvious in Lunas story’s and I was excited to read all about Red.

Unfortunately, her book lacked the depth of Luna’s and scenes felt shoehorned between the Aces scenes who still did a lot more work saving Red than her love interests. Oscars protective behaviour, that was seen as redeeming and cute, is flipped from Reds perspective and quite jarring. I don’t really recognise the relationship between Red and Oscar or like either character as much.

I think that sums up the problems with the last two books, the characters weren’t as likeable. The mafia connection and her mums connection to them seemed a bit unfinished too.

These are easy reading

With easy reading like this there is no taxing of the brain and you can just zone out. With this mindset and not expecting to much the first 4 books in this series were enjoyable for what they were. This book though is sheer rubbish and the female protagonist pathetic. At least be true to characters. This young insecure girl hangs around tough individuals for a year and shows not one iota of growth. At least in the first three books the woman took situations into her own control. This woman sits and cries and everyone around her fixes things. She has no problem with the people around her killing for her but when she needs to step up has a breakdown. Good Lord - I can't even be bothered to finish it.

This book. This book was so amazing. It broke my heart and build it all up again. Jessica is such a strong women who keeps growing. She might not think she is strong but she damn is. All the things she deals with like it is nothing. How calm and cool she stays. Wow. But now she has her own harem to have her back all the time. And they would burn the world for her.  I loved this book so so much, and i was so sad this was the last one. I want so many more books with luna, red and their yummy man.
