Tulip of Istanbul is a historical novel depicting the Ottoman empire’s most glorious times in art and aesthetic, elegance and grandeur of dreams. At the same time, it was an era of splurge and wastage, of economic and social collapse. Known as the Tulip Age, this period saw in 1730 a great public revolt which changed the course of Turkey’s destiny.

The novel begins with the story of a young man who finds his beautiful wife murdered on the wedding night. What is more perverse, the innocent young man himself is charged with the murder of his own wife and thrown into prison. In order to prove his innocence and to find the murderer of his lover, his only clue is a tulip bulb that he found in the palm of his dead wife. He has a secret identity which he was initially unaware of; he is a prince, a sultan’s son, who has grown up outside the palace. An intrigue develops in the power circle about his rumoured existence.

The story is interweaved with historical and cultural detail, introducing the reader to life within royal palaces and dervish lodges, to horticultural secrets about growing exclusive tulips, innovative treatment for the insanes in the asylum, torture devices in the prison, and to the conspiracies hatched in coffee houses and hamams by disaffected revolutionaries and gangsters.

Iskender Pala creates a bewitching tapestry of the splendours and vices of Istanbul at a time when the world was still in thrall to its military, political, and artistic achievements.

About the author

İskender Pala (born 1958, in Turkey) is a Turkish Divan (Ottoman) Poetry Professor and author of best seller novels. He also used to write a column in the Turkish daily newspaper Zaman.

İskender Pala graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Letters Turkish Language and Literature Department in 1979. He entered Turkish Navy as a lieutenant in 1982 and taught Turkish Literature in Naval Schools and Boğaziçi University. In 1987 he established Turkish Navy Museum Archives. He oversaw classification and restoration of many historic documents dated from the times of the Ottoman Empire. He published Encyclopedic Dictionary of Divan (Ottoman) Poetry and received Writers Union of Turkey Award in 1989. He was discharged from the Navy without any conviction during what is now called the "Postmodern coup". Later, he wrote a book about his life in Navy and his discharge, called Between Two Coups referring to military coup in 1980 and 1997 military memorandum in Turkey. He said that the reason for his discharge was his practicing İslam in his private life.

Bana İki Şehrin Hikayesini hatırlatan bir kitaptı, elbette Fransız Devrimi kadar olmasa da Osmanlı'da bir devri kapatan Patrona Halil İsyanı'na giden süreç geri planda akarken bir cinayet aydınlatılıyor hikayede, tabi döneme adını veren lale çiçeği hakkında da bol bol bilgi ediniyoruz. Bu tarz kitapları ve onlardan öğrendiğim bilgileri seviyorum. Her ne kadar halkın ezilmesi ve açlık ile yoksulluktan kırılmasına kalbim dayanmazken, kıyam sonrasında ortaya çıkan ve asıl amaçtan sapıp sadece yağmaya ve yok etmeye koşan insanların karşısındaki soylulara da üzülüyor insan. İki Şehrin Hikayesi'nde de böyleydi bu kitapta da aynı şekilde; her olayın iki yönü var. İlk İskender Pala kitabımdı ama beğenerek okudum.

تدور احداث الرواية في اواخر عهد السلطان أحمد الثالث بداية من عام 1729، من خلال قصة الأمير أحمد ابن أخ السلطان الذي تهرب به أمه بعد وفاة والده خوفا من قتله على يد السلطان، ومحاولة السلطان العثور عليه والتخلص منه.

نرى الكثير من الأحداث والمؤامرات التي تنتهي بتمرد قوات الجيش على السلطان وعزله بعد فترة من الفوضى والسلب والنهب.

زهرة الزنبق محور اساسي من محاور الرواية، نتعرف فيه على اهمية الزهرة وتاريخ زراعتها في تركيا والاعتناء الشديد بها لفرادتها وتميزها.

الرواية يغلب عليها الإيقاع البطيء، ووجود أجزاء كانت مبهمة إلى حد ما بالنسبة لي لأنها تتعلق بتفاصيل خاصة بالدولة العثمانية في هذه الفترة.

Katre-i Matem (English: Tulip of Istanbul) is a beautifully crafted historical novel that immerses the reader in the rich and complex world of the Ottoman Empire. The storytelling is intricate and poetic. At times, the language and structure can be challenging, demanding the reader’s full attention and patience.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its atmospheric setting, blending real historical events with a mysterious and gripping narrative.

The characters are another highlight - especially Yeye (🫶🏻) and Hörükız. Yeye, with his wisdom, innocent love and subtle influence and Hörükız is such a boss woman I LOVE HER VERY MUCH. Their stories intertwine with the protagonist Şahin’s tragic journey in a way that keeps the reader emotionally invested until the VERY last page. Şahin is being accused of murdering the love of his life while being hunted by several people for his secret identity that he is not even aware of: he is a prince.

Overall, Katre-i Matem is a stunning novel for those who appreciate historical depth, intricate storytelling and a touch of Ottoman mystique. It requires patience but for those willing to engage with its layers it offers an unforgettable journey through love, loss and fate.

14 günde bitirmiş isem bir kitabı, ya sıkıldığımdandır ya da geniş bir zamana yaydığım ağır bir kitaptır. Katre-i Matem ise maalesef bunların ilkiydi. Dolu dolu iki senedir kütüphanemde bekleyen, merak ettiğim ve beklentimin yüksek olduğu bir kitaptı, ki çok da uzun olmayan bir süre önce okuduğum Şah&Sultan'ı çok sevmiş olmam, beklentimin yüksek olmasını haklı da çıkarmıştı. AMA akıştaki yavaşlık, hikayenin İstanbul genelinde gerek iç gerek dış yüz olarak çok geniş bir pencereden çok detaylı bir şekilde anlatılması; uzun karakter listesi; zaten bilmediğimiz, alışık olmadığımız, hayal etmekte ve anlamakta zorlandığımız o çevre, okumayı zorlaştırdı.

Buna rağmen kitap, kötü kurgulanmış ya da yazılmış değildi. Öyle ki, bu denlisi ancak İskender Pala'nın usta kaleminden çıkmış olabilirdi.

Bir de, son sayfada "Kara Şahin?" den hemen sonra gelen "?.." var. Okuyanlar beni anladı...

I've mixed feelings regarding the story. As I'm so fond of history, even if it wasn't historically accurate.
I picked this book randomly at a small bookstore in Istanbul, as I wanted to enrich my library with books from different places/cultures that I've visited. I was eager to start it, since it's a thriller and a historical fiction one of my favorite genres combined together!

It started out so great that I was unable to put the book aside. Yet, the more the story unfolds the more it gets boring as it starts to sail away from the important part of the plot. However, at the end after finishing the book, I found myself missing the characters and their friendship.
The Ottoman Era's atmosphere, added to the story its own magic, which I enjoyed so dearly.

ljubav je tajna koja se nipošto ne dijeli

Plijeni sanjivim opisima Istanbula na samom zalasku moći Osmanske vladavine i prelasku u neko novo, nepoznato doba. Kompozicija je u stvari segment koji najviše fascinira i uvlači u priču, podijeljenu u 66 pitanja koja prate 3 različite životne priče. Umijeće i kreativnost pisca blistaju, pažljivom naracijom koja bešumno, neprimijetno spaja i ispreplijeće tri života. Prožeta je kratkim pričama i angdotama iz turskog folklora i istorije. Sve one, kao i knjiga, imaju dominantnan motiv ljubavi (srećne, nesrećne, pronađenje i ponovno izgubljene) i lale - simbola moći, ljepote i nježnosti.

3.5 samo zato što mi je draže implicitno, suptilno pisanje o ljubavi, indirektno opisivanje osjećanja kroz sitnice. Previše filozofiranja i sentimentalnosti. I know. I have problems. :)

One of my friends bought this rather strange book while travelling in Turkey, gave up on it after a hundred pages and donated it to Book Club. I decided to give it a go, partly because I've been wanting to read books set in interesting places around the world recently, and also having recently seen the lovely documentary film 'Kedi' about the street cats of Istanbul. I found it hard to read even though the translation is fine, because there is a large cast of characters with unusual names, that probably are easier to follow in Turkish. There are not many reviews in English here, which leads me to suspect it has not been published outside of Turkey, but was clearly a bestseller there.

Set in the 1700s, it's about two young men who end up in essentially an orphanage after losing their true loves in different ways. Falco's new bride has been brutally murdered on their wedding night, left holding a tulip bulb with links to the royal palace. His friend Yeye was thrown into an asylum by the father of his intended. Together they investigate the murder and a bigger conspiracy against the backdrop of revolution against the sultan and the established order, while others obsess about tulips.

It was all rather bizarre and I'm not sure I understood it all, it might make more sense on a second reading, but I'm not sure I'd have the patience for that. I liked the glimpses of Ottoman history, culture and literature, and the quirky humour, but this would certainly not be for everyone.

A murder mystery historical novel , set amidst a transitional turmoil period (1729-1730), when the reign shifted from the tulip era to the Patrona Halil Revolt. The murder mystery is integrated into the story of the revolt of 1730 and is structured as 66 short chapters, each titled with a question. (Why 66? Because “the word lale, meaning tulip, represents the number sixty-six in the ancient abjad writing system”: the book is full of touches like this.)
and this book starts with a roar, with a young man finding his wife murdered on their very wedding night, only to be held guilty of her murder.

However, the main plot soon takes backstage with all the limelight being taken by various historical and cultural details, and the reader is introduced to the lifestyle of every strata and class of 18th century of the Ottoman Empire (specifically, the Istanbul). The oppressor and the oppressed, both have been shown with remarkable details in the book. The long diversions into culture and history, however, which are somewhat distracting from the plot, are rather interesting if one is keen to take a walk down the memory lane of Istanbul.

Moreover, the book stands unique in its way of how the chapters switch between points of view: the result is choppy but keeps one hooked anyway. It is also remarkable in how each of the important historical characters of the said era, have been brought to life, be it the sultan, the grand vizier or the Patrona Hill.

I have travelled to Turkey multiple times for work. I have always tried to be in Istanbul during each of my visits, even if for a single day. I have loved the vivacity and the boisterous cheerfulness that the city presents – whether walking in the by lanes, or sipping a glass of wine sitting in a bistro overlooking the Bosphorus.

I always wondered about a period in Turkish history, that many of my hosts spoke about, and which was mentioned in passing in a few novels set in Europe – the Ottoman Empire. I could not resist the temptation of picking up this book when I read the blurb – the book was set in 1730, a time known as the Tulip Age.

The novel is the story of two young men. One is an illegitimate prince, who does not know about his paternity, and whose existence is known only to a few people. He finds himself in prison, falsely implicated for the murder of his young wife on his wedding night.

He escapes, and befriends another young man, who escapes from a lunatic asylum. The friend was forced into the asylum by the father of the one whom he loves.

As the two men come together to search for their beloved, the story moves in the revolt brewing into the population due to an era of economic and social collapse. The rich are corrupt, enjoying the luxuries of life, and growing exotic tulips. The common people, including small traders, are the wretched lot. There is a revolt, the Sultan is deposed, another Sultan installed. The two young men also meet their destinies.

The story provides historical and cultural details of the time. Life in the palaces and dervish lodges, and the intrigues and conspiracies hatched in coffee houses and hamams by the revolutionaries and criminals, are beautifully brought out in the novel. There is never a dull moment in the storytelling.

The book will appeal to readers for its storytelling.

I enjoyed my time reading this book!

The plot is very well constructed and the sequence of events is unexpected. This book has crime, romance, suspense, history, music, literature, culture… almost everything.

The story takes place during the Tulip Era in Istanbul during the rule of the Ottoman Empire, when Ibrahim Pasha was the Grand Vizier. It stays with a mysterious event and ends mysteriously as well. Each chapter starts with a question as if it is a riddle to be solved. The book has 66 chapters/questions.

While reading, you feel like roaming around Istanbul chasing for answers and in every turn you will find a surprise!

Highly recommended for people who love to read about a story during the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The book contains beautiful quotes as well.

kitaba başladığımda cinayet anlattığına çok şaşırdım. ilk defa osmanlı döneminden bi cinayet kitabi okudum o yüzden benim icin farklı ve garipti. kitap lale devrinde geçiyor ondan dolayı o zaman hakkında da bilgilenmemizi sağlıyor fakat benim sorunum şu ki maalesef dönem hakkında çok az bilgim olduğundan ve o zamanın kullanılan kelimelerine alışkın olmadığımdan betimlemeleri gözümde canlandıramadım ve olayları düzgün bir şekilde takip edemedim. sonunda cinayeti anladım ama beni şaşırtmadı da şaşırtmasını beklerdim. genel olarak iskender pala üslubunu sevdiğim icin kitabı da hayranlıkta okuduğumu söyleyebilirim.

Çok gayret sarf ettim. Pazara götürdüğümde pazar kızıştı, müşteri çoğaldı, fiyat yükseldi. Satmadım, bekledim. İkindi bereketi, silahlar kuşanmış kara yağız bir delikanlı atının üstünde çıkageldi. Benim kölemi görünce atından indi, yanına yaklaştı, gülümsedi ve "Adın ne?" dedi. Kölemin de ona gülümsediğini gördüm. Delikanlı bana döndü ve fiyatını sordu. Altıncı gün köle pazarına yine geldi. Lakin köleyi yalnızca uzaktan seyretti. O gece kızın elinden tutup delikanlının evine götürdüm. "Benim bu gece acil bir işim çıktı. Bu köleyi sana emanet bıraksam yarına kadar kollayıp gözetir misin?" dedim. Önce kabul etmek istemedi, sonra razı oldu. Ben kaldığım hana döndüm. Gece aralarında nasıl geçer, beraberlikleri ne şekilde yürür diye düşünerek yatağıma oturdum.

Gece yarısına doğru kapım şiddetle yumruklanmaya başladı. Açtım. Kölem ağlıyor ve titriyordu.

"Sana ne oldu; o genç ile aranızda ne geçti?" dedim. Ağlaması durmuyordu.

Neden sonra mırıldandı:

-O genç öldü.

-Bu nasıl oldu peki?

-Sen ayrılınca beni iç odaya aldı. Bana yemek getirdi. Ben yerken o oturup beni seyretti. Elimi yıkamam için leğen getirdi. Sonra bir yatak serdi. Üzerime misk ve gülsuyu serpti. Bana gözlerimi yummamı söyledi. Yumdum. Parmağını yanağıma koydu.

"Subhanallah! Bu ne güzel sevgili; ne etkileyici bir güzellik!" diyor, bunu tekrarlayıp duruyordu. Sonra birden,
Allah'ım hata ettim, haddi aştım, affet beni!" ve sonra "Allah'a aitiz ve ona döneceğiz!" ayetini okuyarak haykırdı, düştü. Gözümü açıp vücudunu sarstım. Canını Allah'a teslim etmişti.

Kölem bunları anlattıktan sonra sabaha kadar ağladı ve gün doğarken o gencin adını sayıklayarak ruhunu teslim etti.

İşte benim bütün bu ağlamalarım günahtan kaçınarak sevgilerine leke getirmeyen o iki aşıkın anısınadır. O iki temiz ve zarif genç gibisini belki bir gün bir yerde buluveririm diye dünyada dolanıp durmadayım. Yaşadıkça bu arayışımı sürdürecek ve böyle öleceğim.. .

Kitabın ortalama puanının altında bir puan verdim. Ben şahsen abartıldığını düşünüyorum. Tamam belki tarihi romanları sevmiyor olabilirim, ama bir tarihçi gözüyle bu kitabı okusaydım yine ortalamanın aşağısında vereceğimi düşünüyorum. Kitabın sonu tam bir hayal kırıklığıydı. Her kahramana sonrasında neler olduğunu söylemişti fakat ana karaktere ne olduğunu söylememişti. Betimlemeler inanılmaz derecede bana yetersiz geldi. Tarihi roman diyeydi galiba bilemiyorum fakat kafamda canlanmadı ne yazık ki. Bu da kitabı sıkıcı kıldı. Sonunda bitti dediğim çok az kitaplardandı. Edebiyat dersi için okuma zorunluluğu olmasaydı kesinlikle elime bile almazdım.

kitap bir dönem romanı olarak çok güzeldi.. İskender pala osmalı lale devrini harika bir şekilde yansıtmış.. ama bir cinayet romanı olarak bakarsak o kadar da harika olduğunu söyleyemem .. bazı yerlerde canım sıkıldı ve okumaya devam etmek için çabalamam gerekti..

Heyecan, aksiyon ne ararsanız var içinde. Sevdiği kadının ardından cinayetini çözmeye çalışan bir asik var, Ona yardımcı iyi insanlar, onu bulup yok etmek.isteyen kötü insanlar.var. ben çok sevdim özellikle hikayenin gerçeklik payı varmış bu beni çok etkiledi. Iskender palanin kalemi de bu güzelliği doruk noktasına çıkardı. Ama hiç sıkılmadan okunacak bir kitap.

Kitabın farkı çok fazla. Hem dönem kitabı, hem polisiye, hem fantastik ögeler mevcut, hem üslup farklı. Bence İskender Pala'nın en iyi kitabıdır.
