'Straitjacket to Success' is a semi-autobiographical fiction novelette following the journey of Steve, a young geologist from Perth, Western Australia. After a work-related trauma deep in the jungle on Borneo, Steve hears in his head the Voice, a guiding presence that soon leads him to what others regard as madness. Viewed wrongly as having a psychotic episode and devastatingly diagnosed with schizophrenia, he struggles both with treatment and making sense of difficult experiences. Exploring the medical paradigm and an alternative framework of understanding to modern biopsychiatry, Steve's story examines not just people's biases and the ways in which emotional distress and unusual perceptions are handled, but how under challenging circumstances, an affected individual can be empowered to find a hope-filled metaphorical and literal meaning amid life's adversity—a meaning that ultimately enables them to cope and thrive.
