The Life: Orthodox Doctrine of Salvation

Rate this book
The Life is the fourth and last installment in Clark Carlton's catechetical Faith Series. The Life completes the series with a focus on "the one thing needful: " what must we do to be saved. The author presents the Orthodox doctrine of salvation in an easy-to-understand format, fully supported with scriptural references and quotations from the Fathers. The Life addresses several issues related to the doctrine of salvation, including issues that many find confusing. Among these are the immortality of the soul and the resurrection, the relationship of faith and works, and what it means to have a "personal relationship" with Christ. The Faith Series has been called the best Orthodox catechism series thus far. The Life is the fitting crown of this series.

Of all of his books, this is my favorite. It was the turning point for me in understanding the basic difference between the Protestant Christian faiths from Orthodox Christianity. Each chapter has questions at the end for reflection. Good for individuals and groups. Focus is on the Orthodox doctrine of Salvation in Christ.

This book present a very different viewpoint on Salvation from Protestant and Catholic Theology, and I found it greatly intriguing and perception changing. Even if you don't agree with it, I think most Christians would benefit from reading portions of this work.

This book does draw a big line between the Orthodox and the Protestant view. Nothing comes close.
