Hi, my name is Melvin Frink. I was once a promising medical student concentrating on neurosurgical procedures. More specifically, I was confident that we could justify the lobotomization treatment in some patients.

Controversial? Yes.

But, I was making headway and earning the respect of my peers, until a terrible accident put me in a coma. Three years later, I awoke with renewed determination.

Mother wouldn’t like what I had in mind. Or would she?

Melvin Needs a Pet...

No spoilers. 3 stars. I would classify this novel as a psychological horror.

Nerdy Melvin Frink, Johns Hopkins University psychiatric student, was on his bike after class on his way to meet his mother for lunch...

He never made it...

Passing a construction site, a beam fell hitting him on the forehead before crushing both his feet...

... and leaving him in a coma...

Three years later, Melvin woke up in the hospital. After his wealthy parent pulled some strings, Mel was discharged to the mother from hell...

But...

Melvin had no intention of living under Mother's domineering thumb again and made plans to use his psychiatric education...

... to lobotomize mom and keep her in the basement of her mansion which just happened to be a mortuary in its previous life...

In fact...

Melvin intends to collect other women to become his "pets" and sexual playthings...

If you took Norman Bates and dropped him into THE COLLECTOR by John Fowles you'd have the premise for this novel.

This was such a quick, fun read. I didn’t want to put it down. The ending was abrupt but conclusive to the entire plot.
