Unveiled: Women of the Old Testament and the choices they made

Rate this book
Some women of the Hebrew scriptures are well known, but many others are barely remembered. Even when they are, we often don’t pause on them long enough to think about what we might learn from them. Unveiled, written with frankness and humour and illustrated with striking artwork from a young Oxford-based artist, explores the stories of 40 women in 40 days. Each reflection ends with a short application to everyday life, guidance for further thought and a prayer.

This beautiful little book was an unexpected and apt gift from my sister-in-law and brother. It arrived during Advent, and while I was in the midst of the Old Testament portion of a Bible study. I also have good memories of a “women of the Old Testament” Bible study I did a few years ago. It felt like this book was created for me!

The format for each subject comprises a Scripture passage, commentary and reflection by Clare Hayns, a prayer, and a drawing or painting. The artwork lifted this above the commonplace for me. All are by Micah Hayns, but the styles vary with the women he portrays. I think the relationship of the mother-author and artist-son created a beautifully woven work.

I am delighted to be the first person to put this book on Goodreads!

These 40+ women of the Hebrew Scriptures captured by Clare Hayns' reflections and her son Micah's images, have been my constant companions during Lent this year, and I have rarely looked forward to the next day's readings more than with this. Insightful, grounded and at times potentially revolutionary. Cannot recommend it enough.

I used this book as a devotional.
I was able to discover biblical women who I had never even noticed, and the artwork is beautiful and inspiring.
