As a spiritual director and pastor I am always looking for resources I can recommend to people I work with that make scripture both accessible and richer. Everyday Connections is one of those rare books that does all that well without being overcomplicated. The practices for reflecting on scripture are simple, yet meaningful. And as someone who managed small groups for decades, I LOVE the small group guide for this book and would use it with small groups.

It's rare that I have found a resource that benefits both my preaching and my devotional life in such a profound way. Everyday Connections: Reflections and Prayers for Year C, edited by Heidi Haverkamp, follows the assigned Sunday readings of the Revised Common Lectionary. It is structured as both a weekly and daily devotional with prayers, prompts and practices related to the themes of the biblical texts. The true gift of this resource is that it strikes so many good balances...it is not too much or too little; it challenges the seminary trained preacher without being inaccessible to laity; it is both cerebral and charming; it is profound but not pretentious. Rev. Haverkamp's knowledge and ability to weave together the words of scripture with the words of others is impressive. And the expanse of quotes from thinkers, theologians, activists, poets, and mystics of every time, faith background, and culture keeps each week fresh. It's never the same thing twice and it's often something I have not read or heard before. There is plenty of space to jot down notes or thoughts. And it lends itself well to small group or weekly text studies. I just can't say enough good things about it.

Heidi Haverkamp offers gracious words in prayer, a wonderful variety of sources paired with scripture, and exceedingly thoughtful response questions and practices. The length of the readings and responses, and weekly examen, is just right for me, asking enough but not too much that I find it difficult to set aside time.
