Enola Holmes: Mycroft's Dangerous Game

Rate this book
Teenage super-sleuth Enola Holmes is back at it again!  Catching up with our heroine after the events in the popular Netflix film, readers will be taken right back into Enola’s world of adventure, mystery and daring intrigue in ENOLA HOLMES: MYCROFT’S DANGEROUS GAME!

Starring Millie Bobby Brown (Godzilla vs Kong, "Stranger Things") as the young and brilliant Enola, the graphic novel features an original story that bridges the adventures of the first film with the highly anticipated sequel, Enola Holmes 2. Fans and new readers alike can connect with Enola’s spunky story as she embarks on an adventure helping (and evading!) her famous brothers – Sherlock and Mycroft (portrayed on page and screen by fan-favorite actors Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin).

Picking up where 2020’s exceptionally popular film left off, readers and fans will join Sherlock Holmes’ rebellious teen sister Enola in a thrilling adventure and uncover the new mystery that she is up against. After a mysterious group of anarchists abduct her brother Mycroft, Enola investigates his disappearance in hopes of rescuing him and recovering something precious he took from her. With the help of Lord Tewkesbury and a young boy on the streets named Shag, she uncovers the truth behind her brother's abduction and unravels a web of mystery that takes her deep into the London underground as she tries to foil the anarchists’ nefarious plot!

BIO -- NANCY SPRINGER

Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Nancy Springer moved with her family to Gettysburg, of Civil War fame, when she was thirteen. She spent the next forty-six years in Pennsylvania, raising two children (Jonathan, now 38, and Nora, 34), writing, horseback riding, fishing, and birdwatching. In 2007 she surprised her friends and herself by moving with her second husband to an isolated area of the Florida panhandle, where the birdwatching is spectacular and where, when fishing, she occasionally catches an alligator.

4 stars!

I absolutely adore the Enola Holmes films on Netflix, so I jumped at the chance to read a graphic novel “sequel” to the first film. In this book, Enola must save her brother Mycroft after he is kidnapped by a group of radicals.

I thought this book captured the tone and feel of the movies and it was a really fun read. Fast paced and engaging, if you are a fan of the movies you will enjoy this story. Plus the artwork was spot on and absolutely stunning.

I'm a huge Enola Holmes fan. I discovered the books through the Netflix movie, but I had so much fun reading the books and now I can't wait to see the second movie. I was quite glad this graphic novel was published to spend the waiting time.

What I really loved about this graphic novel is that it's quite clear that they used the characters from the movie as models. The cover already shows it, but everyone is recognizable and facial expressions are clear to see and read. It's therefore easy to follow the story and tell everyone apart.

I also like how this is a typical Enola adventure that covers the pillars that are so Enola for me: coded messages, some spying and danger and of course a case that somehow has something to do with human rights.

Since the book is relatively short it was quite easy to read it in one sitting, but I'm now even more excited about the upcoming movie than I already was. Even though I kinda will miss Mycroft, since it seems he's not in it.

I really enjoyed this TV show tie in and what made it sing for me was the excellent art. I see it took a village (more than one person) to achieve that art, but well done! I read an ARE, with much art that wasn't yet in color, but look forward to seeing the finished book. Recommended to Enola fans.

Enola Holmes is baaaaaaccck! And she's just as spunky and independent as ever. If you have read the series by Nancy Springer, the movies and this graphic novel are slightly different from the series. AND I LOVE IT! Enola Holmes's hideout is found out by her brother Mycroft. Having left in a haste, she left behind the language of flowers book given to her by her mother. Mycroft promptly takes her book and leaves her dwelling. Enola isn't about to let this theft go unanswered, but in attempting to retrieve the book, she witnesses Mycroft's abduction by ALARM (an anarchist group). Will Enola take up the case of her incorrigible brother or will she pass the case off to Sherlock? More importantly, can she stop the anarchists or get her book back? Read on to find out!

What I loved:
The beautiful illustrations
The fast paced plot
Enola's new friend
Enola's old friend
Edith - she's always a great character and I love how she made Enola work for intel and train in her dress
Sherlock - his salty character brings me joy

An entertaining middle-grade read for those who enjoy a younger and female version of Sherlock Holmes. You should for she is both Sherlock’s and Mycroft’s younger sister. In this graphic novel, the drawings are excellent replicas of the actors in Netflix’s Enola Holmes series.

The game is afoot as Enola is at Mycroft’s abode to acquire her mother’s book that he stripped from her as he sent her off to boarding school. As she was going through Mycroft’s flat, she noticed things that make them similar and how they are also different. As she is probing, she suddenly hears Mycroft come in. Shortly after his arrival, some men come in and abduct him.

Regardless of her feelings towards him and how he treats her, she feels an obligation to rescue him. Before Mycroft is abducted, she hears the men question him on what he told Lord Henry Matthews. That is a huge clue and she sets off to the rescue.

Edith makes a very nice but short appearance and while her presence is short, it is still impactful and it’s always wonderful to see her have both a verbal and physical spar with Enola. Also making his appearance is Lord Tewkesbury and a new ally named Shag, they race against time to find her brother.

My only complaint is that it is a bit too short. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more meat and dialogue between the siblings and if we could learn more about the anarchists’ nefarious plot and more emphasis on the why. Speaking of siblings, Sherlock has a very reduced role which was disappointing to me.

This time, her enemy is a group who call themselves ALARM (All London Anarchist Revolutionary Movement). Can she and her friends help save Mycroft in time? Read it and find out.

Plot: 3/5
Illustration: 5/5
Pace: 4/5
Writing: 4/5

Exciting story and beautiful graphics. It’s about time Enola rescues Mycroft. Too bad he doesn’t know that he owes her for the timely rescue. Eventually, she must prove to Mycroft that she deserves to manage her own life.

When teenage sleuth Enola Holme’s brother Mycroft is kidnapped, she sets out to rescue him. The trail leads to anarchists on the verge of a disastrous act. Enola must enlist the aid of a friend in the House of Lords along with a street urchin to save her brother and expose the conspiracy. The illustrations in this graphic novel are nicely done. I enjoyed the strong plot, the determined heroine, and the historical setting. This title is a welcome addition to the series and a fun escape! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read an ARC for an honest review.

Graphic novels are something I usually go for but thought this would appeal to some of my tutor group. I have to say it was thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the film and it's nice to see Enola back investigating the disappearance of Mycroft.

The story is easy to follow and is beautifully illustrated. I hope the final copy before publication is full colour.

One to talk about my tutor group when I see them.

Thanks Netgalley for this advanced copy.

I really enjoyed the Enola Holmes film and am looking forward to reading the books so it was great to find another way to enjoy the series. The illustrations were great, really vivid and full of action. The story was short but still fun to read.

*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free graphic novel*

"Enola Holmes: Mycroft's Dangerous Game" takes place between the first movie and the highly anticipated second one, but I found it quite repetitive when still remembering the content of the first movie. Mycroft has been kidnapped and Enola investigates with the help of her friends, eventually she saves the day. Sherlock (Henry Cavill) shows up once or twice, but mostly this is the action driven investigation story that you already know from the first movie. I was a bit bored though, not sure why, maybe because it was a bit predictable or because I don't like Mycroft in this adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle.

The actors were captured really well and Victorian London also looked nice!

I absolutely love the movie and was so excited when I got this book for my birthday! It definitely had the same mystery element as the movie and the characters are all very much the same, but since it was a comic book I had a hard time really getting into it and reading it without being confused by the dialogue. The art was amazing and the story was very good too, I just think it would be better as a movie. Can wait for November 4th for the 2nd Enola Holmes movie though! The story isn’t this books plot to be confused with either.

Enola Holmes: Mycroft's Dangerous Game picks up directly after the much loved netflix movie adaptation finishes. With Enola witnessing the kidnapping of her brother Mycroft. This graphic novel will delight Enola fans as it all the charm and fun you've come to expect from a story which Enola is involved in.

It was okay. Didn’t seem as if the writer had much experience writing comics. The Enola Holmes character herself, I haven’t read any of the books or seen the Netflix material, but have read all the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Enola is not exactly comparable to Sherlock. Some generic detective skills.

Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this Graphic novel.

Enola Holmes: Mycroft's Dangerous Game was a fun read. The quick-paced, high-action style of Enola's adventures lends them perfectly to the medium of a graphic novel. I think many kids (and adults) who enjoyed the Netflix movie will enjoy this continuation of Enola's story. However, I'm not sure individuals who have not seen the movie will get quite as much enjoyment out of the story as you kind of have to already know who the characters are, like Lord Tewkesbury. Plus it's helpful to understand the backstory of Enola's relationship with her brothers and mother.

The art style of the book was very realistic, mimicking the movie medium of its predecessor. It's impressive how well the artist managed to capture the likeness of the actors, you immediately recognize Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter. However, I'm not sure the novel quite captured the unique atmosphere of the movie. It didn't quite have the victorian-epistolary charm that I was hoping for. I also think it would benefit from a few more panels. The movie is very action based so seeing more of the escapes and fights would be cool and a couple of times I was confused by things that happened out of frame (for example at one point Lord Tewkesbury just seemed to disappear and I wasn't quite sure what had happened to him).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the Enola Holmes movie. But I don't know If I would rush to put it on my library's order list as a general book to add to our graphic novel collection.

Hot off the conclusion of the 2020 Netflix film comes Enola Holmes's next adventure, Mycroft's Dangerous Game. This continuation graphic novel has stellar art that truly captures the essence of Millie Bobby Brown as the young Enola and the rest of the Holmes family.

We find ourselves with Enola, desperate to get back the book her mother gave her, and suddenly find herse searching for clues to help solve a mystery that Mycroft is involved in. Nothing like a little bit of anarchy and kidnapping to deal with!

A fun and quick read for teen Enola fans. The art is vivid and makes London feel lived-in as much as a graphic novel can. Definitely recommended for a younger/teen reader rather than an older teen-reader, as the novel resolves the case rather quickly in a span of six chapters. (This is my only complaint with the story - as an educator who teaches the mystery genre, it is obviously necessary to wrap up and have a logical concluision to the case - but this conclusion came too quickly in a span of... three spreads? The ending shift felt a bit abrupt.)

Warning! This may be a bit confusing for a reader who hasn't previously been exposed to Enola's film; the film is "required reading" before picking up this graphic novel. Could absolutely be used as an extension in a class/unit where the Enola film is viewed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Legendary Comics for this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC! I don’t read graphic novels often so this is a lovely little treat.

Art style really nice - it suits the time period. I loved all the little details, the shadows, the colour scheme and the panel style. I especially loved when the images were not in a panel, and stood out as a background image. The lighting was drawn so well, I could feel the warmth emanating from the lampposts. I could honestly stare at each page for hours, the artwork totally appeals to me.

The dialogue was effective and exciting and I read it all in Enola Holmes’ voice. I also liked the little sound effects and thought they added perfectly to the story.

Enola’s character shone through in this graphic novel. I love how witty and strong she is, and her facial expressions were drawn so intricately.

For some reason, after Chapter 5 the art style is black and white until the end. I am not sure why this is the case and unfortunately this ruins the whole graphic novel for me. I was enjoying it so much until this point.

I really feel like it would be better if this was all in colour.

Apart from that I loved this novel and I think it’s the perfect accompaniment to the movie.

If you are a fan of the Netflix movie and are waiting for the next one to come out, you will enjoy this short graphic novel. It picks up where the movie left off and is very quick paced as it follows Enola trying to solve the mystery of her brother Mycroft's kidnapping. The illustrations mirror the actors and settings from the movie which paints a nice continuum between the two in establishing the world of Enola Holmes.

This is a great book for younger readers and readers who might not usually read straight prose books. I enjoyed it as an adult reader. Some may wish that it were a little longer or that the plot was a little more complex. But I found it enjoyable as a fun read and would recommend it to wide age range of readers. The explanation pages at the end of the book explaining the illustration and plot choices was a nice touch! It would be very ideal for a young reader interested in script-writing, illustrating and/or writing stories to learn and think about the choice that were made when creating the book.

I knew there was a Netflix movie, but I haven’t seen it yet (but it’s on my list); however, I really enjoyed this. Enola is quite the young lady. Her level of intelligence easily rivals Sherlock’s.

The writing is engaging, and the story is fun. However, I think this story is a part of a series, and this is the only book I’ve read in the series if that’s the case… So I was able to follow along without any issues. However, if there’s a bigger plot at play, it may be worth it to get the other books.

The illustrations helped move the story along, and they were stunning. My only complaint, though, is that some of the writing was a little blurry, making certain parts difficult to read. I was reading this on my iPad, so that could be a contributing factor. I would recommend reading this on something a little bigger.

Overall, this was a fast-paced, fun read that everyone could enjoy. I recommend watching the film first, however.

The latest Enola Holmes graphic novel is a fun read for anyone who enjoys the series and is waiting for the next season.

Mycroft has been kidnapped by anarchists, and Enola and her friends are desperate to get him back. Enola visits Mycroft's study to take back a precious book Mycroft had taken from her years ago - The Language of Flowers owned by her mother. Mycroft comes back unexpectedly, so Enola hides in the chimney. Shortly after he comes home, men break into his study and kidnap him. Despite all he has done to her, she knows he loves her, and she loves him.

This was a very quick read for me. It is interesting to see the characters drawn as they appear on the TV screen. I imagine purists would be bothered by a book taking after the TV series, rather than the other way around! But kids who are interested in mysteries and Holmes will enjoy reading this graphic novel.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advance copy of this book.

Enola Holmes

A fun short graphic novel I really enjoyed as a fan of the film and book series. Great for those who want an add on to the world of Enola Holmes as it’s filled with lovely illustrations and a fun plot to follow.
Although I did enjoy reading the graphic novel, I definitely felt that to understand what is going on you need to understand some of the original plot of the film however I guess as it’s related to the film, pre-existing knowledge may be known to the readers. It’s entertaining, fast paced and rather comedic.

Would love to read more Enola Holmes graphic novels in the future as I understand that there may be some others.

Will I reread in the future? Yes, it’s fun and a quick read.

Will I read anything else by the author? Yes, if connected to the world of Enola Holmes.

Thank you Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review

I do not have Netflix, so I have not seen the first movie, nor was I aware that there was going to be a part two released this year. I have read the novels by Nancy Springer and very much enjoy Enola's character and her struggle to be independent at a time when that just isn't possible for young girls.

The problem I had with this is that if you do not have the other graphic novels, or are aware of the show, it doesn't really connect to the current graphic novel. This is most likely my fault, but it also means that I don't feel comfortable recommending it to tweens and teens that do enjoy the novels but haven't seen the show. I think there is too much placed on the movies rather than the character herself.

The artwork was good, I did enjoy the London that was shown and ran through. I know that this is a media tie-in, but these always just seem to fail unless you're a huge fan. The story was fun and dangerous, so it will be appealing to kids who like historical mysteries, or are already Enola Holmes fans.

Brala bych další zápletky, scény a napětí.
Navíc ta dobová atmosféra, starý dobrý Londýn, a jednotlivé případy zkrátka baví. Za mě rozhodně doporučení.

I am super impressed by this book.
Each time I go to my public library, I check the graphic novel area, just in case there's something good. This cover jumped at me, because of the quality of the art, confirmed by so many excellent pages inside, with so many details for instance in building, but also in clothes, and some nice light effects as well.
Now, I usually do not read fanfiction, and very few YA.
I do love Sherlock Holmes (I have listened to all of it a few years ago), but have never wanted to read any Holmes fanfiction. And I don't have TV nor Netflix, so I knew absolutely nothing about Enola.
Beside the art, I'm really impressed that the story and characters fit so well within the ambiance of Sherlock Holmes mysteries,
This is very well done, and now I have anther series to discover, as I see Nancy Springer wrote several books with Enola.
