DNF One of my forever pet peeves in fated mate books, will always be how the hero goes around and fcks random women to "abate his arousal", up until the literal moment he can find his mate. The mate he keeps complaining about that he hasn't found. Maybe if he would zip up his pants and actually try to find her, he would get somewhere. Reading about his past F buddy coming onto him and him finally saying no for once right before he finds his mate, isn't something to be applauded for, nor does it make him attractive in any way🙄
“Hello, my king,” Daphne said, her tone seductive. Once upon a time, she would have induced me to fall into bed with her. Not tonight though. I sighed. My loneliness could be assuaged for an hour... a day... but not for long enough. And not by this one. “Daphne. What are you doing here?” She was sprawled across my bed, dressed only in her underwear, though it barely contained her ample curves. I liked women with more flesh. Large breasts, huge ass. Something to hold during love-making and curl up against on long wintery nights. My mate would need to be big and lush, strong enough to carry my heirs. But this woman was not the one for me. She pushed up onto her hands and pouted. “It’s been so long, my king. Don’t you crave me as you once did?” She reached out her hand, and I was tempted by her words. Tempted to lose myself in her body. To forget my aching loneliness and the long, winding quest for my mate for a few lust-fueled hours. So far, the search for her had proven fruitless. “No. I’m sorry Daphne. I can’t.”
“How can you say that to me?” she said. “We’ve been lovers for all our adult life. You know you want me. No one can please you as I do.” I chuckled at the arrogance in her words. She had no idea what I truly craved in the bedroom. She was a servant in my household, but nothing more. I wanted someone who would love me, submit to me, give only to me. Not to every man in the kingdom who looked her way.
He's a hypocrite for saying the OW isn't for him because she fcks other men, and yet he knows she's not his mate and continues to have sex with her, and many other women, while "waiting" for his mate. And it makes it worse after seeing how the heroine is very weak and complacent towards him (and I'm sure she'll be a virgin too 🙃). Also, the way the hero talks about women's bodies and what his future mate "needs" to have or look like, is gross. You should be thankful when you find her at all🙄
Books and heroes like this are exactly why I'm in the biggest book slump😭
Sweet....if I had to describe this read with one word that would be it.
If you have read my reviews before you can probably tell I am not a sweet kinda lady. Lol! However, the world was interesting. This is a book many would find 4-5 star if your in to the sugary sweet.
FMC was to complacent. There was no chase. MC kept referring to her as strong willed but I did not see that at all. Too sweet. Too quick to give in. MC was hot when he kidnapped her, then he got a little naïve and easy to manipulate. I like my MCs bad ass to the max.
This story is going nowhere and the descriptions the characters give about Lucy directly contradict what she says about herself.
“We, uh, know of such a woman. She lives in the next town over. She’s quite famous around these parts.” “For what?” I ask, fear sinking into my gut. Please, don’t say that she is the town whore. I couldn’t bear it. “Well, for one thing, her striking looks.” The woman furrowed her brow, staring into the roaring fireplace. “And for the other, turning down every guy that asks her out. She’s had plenty of offers, I can tell you that much.”
So this is a woman who receives A LOT of attention for being beautiful, but seemingly has high standards and is unwilling to compromise. Okay.
But then... “A smile trembled on her lips. “Do you like bigger women? Is that it? Because I can tell you, where I come from, men like you don’t want women like me.”
Wait...what? We were told a couple chapter ago not only are you beautiful, but you're FAMOUSLY beautiful in your town. This doesn't line up with the character development.
“On the contrary, she looked strangely shy. As if she wasn’t used to men complimenting her in this way. I couldn’t fathom the motivations of human men. To me, she was a feast for the eyes.”
So is she a bold, daring, beautiful woman with high standards and a fiery temper? Or is she a weak, insecure mouse who cannot handle making up her mind about whether she wants to live with the man she literally DREAMED about?
Well, well, well. What a misogynistic book that was. I'm almost surprised at how bad it was. Honestly, it made me so angry to read or and I finished it out of sheer stubbornness.
The dragon king is sleeping around with whatever can walk which would be fine by me, if he wasn't loathing those women because they sleep with him (and that wasn't because he despises himself, but because in his eyes they're "easy").
He says that he quenches his flesh's thirst with beautiful women but blames them for sleeping with him for his favor? So it's fine to use women for their looks but God forbid they use you. This dude could write a whole course on misogyny.
And when Lucy, his mate, doesn't jump in his bed (or more like - doesn't want to stay there) he is utterly baffled. He can't believe what woman wouldn't want to be with him because after all he is a "king". And here I got really mad because I don't know many women who would bind themselves for a sexist who's going to see them as little more than breeders and their children as mere heirs.
I came across this while browsing audiobooks on Kobo Plus and decided to give it a try. It was ok, I neither loved or hated it.
The H wasn’t my favorite. I typically like fated mates but he spent too much time waxing poetic about all the women he had banged. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t want to hear about all the OW an H has banged and how easily he pulls them. He’s a dragon king. I have a feeling if he were a dragon peasant he wouldn’t have been so lucky. He also slut shamed all the easy women he’d been banging while hoping his mate would be more virtuous. (She’s a virgin 🙄)
The h here was also very meh to me. She spent a lot of time in her head thinking about how she wasn’t going to just stick around for this fated mate nonsense but she didn’t mean it. She felt the pull of the bond but kept disbelieving it at every turn.
She’s almost ready to give in and just stay when a skanky OW lies to her telling her she’d been with the H the previous night. He had sent her away but h believed her, she still banged H again before getting the truth which was perplexing. While nothing happened she didn’t know that yet.
This was a faster burn, some OW drama, no cheating, no separation but h is kidnapped and needs rescuing.
Safety - it’d be a lot safer minus all his musings about what a manwhore he is. We don’t see any encounters on page but do see two OW trying to seduce him. He, of course, sends both away.

Taken by the Dragon King is not the typical dragon shifter tale. The writing is on the inept side and execution is lacking, and both the hero and heroine are, there's no other way to state it, dull. Stavrok is not the firey king he thinks he is, and Lucy, introduced at the beginning as having a temper, falls flat and in step with whatever Stavrok wants. The pace of the story is the only reason I was able to continue. Had this story been dragged out, I would be one of the many who DNF. Character definition is lacking with one and two dimensional characters, including the main two.
Taken by the Dragon King is book one in the Fire and Ice series, and I have to say a disappointing start. It's not the worse book I've read this year, but it is somewhere along the bottom of the stack. The grammatical errors and typos are unforgivable, making some passages hard to read.
This is the first book in the new series by Amelia but like all her books it is just sheer good fun with a determined alpha and a woman that isn't sure what is happening in her life but determined to fight it anyway
Stavrok is a dragon shifter king who has searched high and low for many years for his one true mate so when he is given a lead he doesn't hesitate to go after her. Lucy is a child care worker who dreams of a one true love but who would want a curvy girl so she lives on the dreams she has of a man sweeping her off her feet Imagine her surprise when she answers her door one night to find three gorgeous men on her doorstep with one of them sweeping her of to his castle. Stavrok keeps telling her she is his mate but this human has trouble understanding what he means but when she is kidnapped by a rival to force Stavrok's hand she finally has to face the fact that she does in fact love him Can he rescue her and can they have a future You will have to read to see
TAKEN BY THE DRAGON KING is the first book that I’ve read by Amelia Shaw. While I found the story to be rather basic and straightforward I enjoyed it. I’ll not easily forget how the main characters first meet. They were both likable but I found that I liked the secondary character, Cass, better.
King Stavrok was looking for his mate and a sorceress told him were he could find her. So he went and got Lucy from the human world to bring her to his world. She didn't believe in the mating thing at first but as time went on. She fell in love with her mate,
Strovrok is a dragon shifter king and he is looking for his mate. When a witch shows him what she looks like and where to look for her it sends him on a journey to find her. Lucy is a daycare worker and a stronger woman. She is used to being in charge of her life but one night everything changes for her. She wakes up to someone calling to her from outside her home and then a man from her dreams changes into a dragon and flies away with her. Unable to believe what has happened Lucy waits to an explanation. Strovrok tells her that she is his mate that he is claiming her. Will Lucy give into her attraction to him? Can he convince her that he is the one for her?
This is a great story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a 2 star book before it kind of devolved into a rushed ending that had me skimming through the last 30% with no pay-off. It was a free book about shifters with a sub-two-hundred page count. I wasn't expecting literary genius. I was hoping for a quick smutty palate-cleanser before I committed to a longer series.
And while it started out decent enough, it quickly devolved into a low hanging fruit for desperate 30 year-olds who want babies. The author tries to convince you that this socialist shifter society is progressive and high brow, but devolves into casual sexism when it suits them. Savrok takes dozens of women to bed, but has a preference for women who don't sleep around? Puke. Bad guy who has disdain for humans randomly taunts the love interest with threats of sexually assaulting one? Puke. The main character's eyes are green, but at the end the love interest describes his son's eyes as blue "just like his mother's"? Tell me you rushed through this without telling me you rushed through this.
The main character asks for her own bedroom after being kidnapped and taken to another world, and the love interest swoons at how tough she is. The bar is in hell. The main character dissociates after getting kidnapped and treated like a queen but suddenly turns feisty when she gets kidnapped again and thrown in a prison. I feel like those two reactions should have been swapped. The author tries to cover up the use of the damsel in distress trope by saying that the main character "doesn't wear damsel well" except she does. Twice. Being mad at being a damsel does not make you not a damsel. You were still useless, and you still got rescued. And you got stockholmed by saying "I had a lot of time to think while I was in that dungeon" and deciding to stay with the nicer of your two captors.
I listened to the audiobook, which I feel plays into my review overall.
I feel like I could have enjoyed reading this book SLIGHTLY more than listening to the audiobook. Was this the best book I’ve ever “read”? No. Was it entertaining? Eh.. Not well executed, not much for character development, and we’re just trying to slut shame apparently.
I’m trying to figure out if he actually shifts into a dragon because in the cover art it’s… just wings? What’s going on. How does Lucy just completely give up her life within a span of a day? Lucy is well known for being asked out by all the men in the town but then she’s telling Stavrok that men don’t like her. Did anyone read this before it was published?

What the f did i read? This book was uhm interesting from start to finish. I don't really hate it, but i absolutely don't love it either. Some word choices weren't it for me. Did love the couple, but the spice was disappointing
Some thoughts, in no particular order: Straight to jail for whoever designed this cover The slut shaming????????? MMC sees a woman in clear distress and won’t step in to help her because it “wasn’t his place” :/ MORE SLUT SHAMING?! “The man began to glow” why is this giving this is the skin of a killer, Bella FMC is being kidnapped and she’s grateful she put on socks first FMC is “famous” for her beauty in town but she’s shocked MMC wants her bc she’s a size sixteen She fainted so of course she must be pregnant “Frumpy, chubby, big girls” so, more fat shaming? “I weighed more than most of my ex-boyfriends” WHY is her weight brought up so often? FMC raging at MMC over what Daphne said bc she’s so insecure girl pls stop you’re embarrassing me “You’ve ruined me” calm down, it’s been 48 hours FMC: “It wasn’t that I was falling for him. I’ve already fallen.” Also FMC: “I feel like this is a load of shit.” I fear I’m getting whiplash from the nonsensical back and forth every few pages. “The mood changed so fast I had whiplash.” HAHAHA I COULDN’T MAKE THIS UP IF I TRIED FMC’s eyes are both emerald green (chapter 3) and shades of blue (epilogue). Hello, continuity, where are you?
Ya’ll, this was free on Kindle, I have no other excuse.
Meh, this was fine, if a little bland and predictable. I don't have a lot to say on this one. It is exactly what the title describes—no more, no less. I liked that he falls first and that she has a backbone. The writing is readable, and the plot holds together. But it is simply made up of a series of tropes we've all read before, and nothing feels original or even combined in a new way. So, honestly, I was bored by it. But if you happen to particularly like the tropes used, I imagine you'll be more invested than I was.
Lastly, I listened to the audio version. Catherine Bilson did a fine job with the narration. But I rather feel she wasn't a good fit styalistically. She was a little too prim and polite, as if she should have been reading a cozy Ms. Marple-style mysteries or sweet historical romances instead of mildly spicy PNR.
This is the first book I've read by Amelia Shaw and although I love shifter romances, especially dragons, I'm kind of on the fence about this one. I usually need to feel an affinity with the main characters but I had a hard time even liking the hero, Stavrok. He's in his forties and yet acts as a petulant teen who cares only about getting his mate. There was really no substance to the story and the character developments were not the greatest either.
According to the reviews, some love this book, others hate it....for me, I'll stay on the fence and give it a 3 rating.
I’ve received a free copy on ‘stuff your earbuds 2023’, my review is honest and voluntary.
My expectations for this book were high based on the blurb but it didn’t come to fruition. What mostly bugged me where the inconsistencies in the book. Like first the heroine was known for her beauty and how she rejected every man but later when she meets the hero she’s insecure about being a big girl and ‘guys don’t want a girl like me.’ The actions from the witch didn’t make sense to me either.
This was my first from this author and I really enjoyed it. The MMC and FMC had great chemistry and the story was engaging enough to make me want to read the next book in the series.
If you are looking for a fast burn with good spice and an engaging story that paces well, this is the book for you! I highly recommend! Definitely “following” this author and her work!
Listened to it because I didn’t have to pay for it, got to far in to DNF, very misogynistic beliefs. Relies heavily on the fated mates trope instead of actual establishing a relationship between the protagonist and the love interest. Tries to come across as body positivity but does a terrible job at it. Don’t waste your money.
The story was short, but good. Only thing I really didn't like was the way they fell for each other. It wasn't my first book with fated mates and that's why I think that bond should bring them closer together, but it shouldn't be the main reason why they end up together. That should be love or at least something deeper.
Listened to as audio book! This was a positive 3 stars! Cute book, not much to it. I was just happy to have a big brawny protective man to listen about. Not sure if I want to read/listen the second one.
