The Rise of Monsters

Rate this book
“What do you do when the world hardens you? When looking in the mirror becomes too painful and using your fists to let the anger breathe isn’t enough anymore? You either drown and die in your own bullshit or you fight to survive.”

Annalise. Lanier. Cabe. Quint.

One fought underground to make money in the slums of New York City. One lived with crippling guilt, swimming in self-hatred. Another fell in love with a ghost, losing himself to his dedication, while the last spent centuries alone, fighting for control of his own mind.

Unforeseen circumstances bring the four of them together, sparking to life an unwanted bond, igniting new and foreign power in their veins, and bringing forth more questions than answers.
Thrown into a game they don’t want to play, they’ll have to rely on each other to find the truth.

Angels. Demons. A war for human territory.
From the ashes of their pasts, monsters will rise.

**WARNING: TROM is book one in a Dark Urban Fantasy Reverse Harem series. In this series the FMC won't have to choose between her love interests. This is NOT your typical RH, it is a journey. "She was a wicked creature, a perfect tornado, an emotionally charged full moon. And she completely owned me."

This is a RH dark-fantasy debut novel by Brianna Jean , first book in the Angelus series and I have to say that she completely nailed it!!
I am not a huge fan of RH but I was intrigued by the blurb of this book so I gave it a try and I am sooo happy that I did.

The author creates this new world in urban New York with creatures ,demons, angels, elementals and so much more. Annalise is a fighter in underground pits of NY . She is strong beyond human capability but doesn't understand why, until one day three mysterious men approach her in a corner alley. The guys were tasked to find this woman and protect her, but they haven't anticipated the bond that starts between them all.

Annalise character is so complex. She is not your regular "damsell in distress" , she is powerful, independent ,confident woman but in the same time a troubled and full of anger soul. Her past is a nightmare that filled her with hatred and commitment issues, so when the guys explain to her the truth of her existence and the connection between them , she decides to live in the moment and take what she wants.

"What do you do when the world hardens you? When looking in the mirror becomes too painful and using your fists to let the anger breathe isn’t enough anymore? You either drown and die in your own bullshit or you fight to survive. I’m not sure which one I’m doing."

Ok now....the GUYS... they are a fine looking "gang" !!

Cabe is the boy next door in looks, he is protective, sweet and full of love but so troubled inside. He had visions of this woman since he was a kid but never dreamed of finding her and now that he did things are not going the way he expected.
Lanier is the alpha men of the group , confident, moody and grumpy and oh so powerful. He wants this bond to be broken so he can follow the plan he had forever, he tries to fight it but in the end they all fall to an agreement to live this connection while they have it.
Quint is the cocky, funny and easy-going one,he is oozing sex and confidence but under that facade he is full of bitter resentment ,hatred and insecurities . Warlock (half Demon and half Human) Quint is the only one with a real beast inside ,he turns into a seven-foot-tall Bull with horns and fangs .

“Alright boys, I’ve got some questions...” I started, looking between the three of them. “First, who has the bacon? And second, what the fuck do you want from me?”

They have some troubles getting used to sharing and jealousy in the beginning, the guys are brothers (by choice), but in the same time Annalise makes the different relationships flow and work by having strong different connection with each one of them. They all complet eachothers and form a strong team.
“We could burn the world down as long as we did it together.”

Being the first book in the series this sets the plot and incoming events quite well, thought I would have liked more explaining of this hidden paranormal world . There are some twists and turns and some questions answered but now with the threat of an incoming war at the door things get a bit out of control but that I guess will be explored in book two.

Overall this was an enjoyable and thrilling read and I would recommend this for RH fantasy fans.
The book end with a cliff.. so waiting for the next one because I need answers!

ARC provided by the author

Let me start by saying that I NEVER read fantasy books, much less one with so many different POVs, so to say that I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this book would be the understatement of the year, but I’m so glad that I read it. This is Brianna’s debut novel and I fucking loved every second of it!

This book is dark, full of angst and incredible sexy, the author did an amazing work creating this world and all these beautiful and broken characters.

A badass heroine gets me EVERY. TIME. and Annalise was the baddest of them all, so that’s a great start. She is fierce, loyal and strong. She had a fuck up, dark and lonely past, but that only made her stronger, a great fighter. When she turned 21, her world changed completely and now all she wants are answers. Life showed her that she doesn’t need anyone, but when 3 strangers appeared with some of the answers that she needed so badly, she followed her gut and chose them and sticked with them no matter what.

“I was locked up tighter than Fort Knox. I had thorns around my black heart, hate in my soul.”

I'm complete trash for alpha males and this book have three of them, and they are just perfect!

Lanier was powerful, strong and all alpha, Quint was haunted, dark and honest, and Cabriel was protective, sweet and tortured. The three of them were broken, mysterious, strong and cocky. Together the three of them complemented parts of Anna that made them perfect for her, it made her stronger, complete. They were brothers by choice and with her they were EVERYTHING.

“We could burn the world down as long as we did it together.”

The rise of monsters has it’s own unique storyline , Lan, Quint and Cabe are three dudes that I’ll never forget! I love each and everyone of them so hard, I’m so happy this book it’s a reverse harem, because having to choose only one of them it would fucking suck big time!

I can’t wait for this war to come already, I feel like the second part is too far away.

"She was a wicked creature, a perfect tornado, an emotionally charged full moon. And she completely owned me."

This book was filled with everything I love - mating bonds, sexy tatted men, a bad ass female MC, urban fantasy involving angels and demons, snarky attitude and sexual tension.

I can't deny I'm a HUGE sucker for mating bonds but I was also a little worried it would feel a little insta-lovey, however I think it was written really well and I enjoyed the push and pull situation Annalise shared with each of the guys. Our three love interests - Cabe, Quint and Lanier were so good and I loved how their brotherhood was being tested because the jelousy and possessiveness they felt. Of course, since I'm a sucker for the funny male character in a harem, I loved Quint the most of all the guys. Also, Annalise was HOT and I am always drawn to a bad ass, snarky female MC who has her walls up. She was great.

While I saw the big cliffhanger reveal coming, I still thought it was a great ending and I'm READY to see whats gonna happen next with all the new secrets we learned. I think the only reason i deducted a half star was because I found the last 10-15% to be a lot of information to process that I got a bit lost in.

Overall, a great debut novel for Brianna Jean and I cant wait to read more of her work!!!!

“The Rise of Monsters,” a debut novel by Brianna Jean is a dark fantasy RH romance unlike any book I’ve ever read. A whip-smart, wickedly sexy fantasy with vampires, Nephilim, demons, a sassy heroine, and three hotter than sin alpha males.

Get ready for a wild and sometimes disturbing rollercoaster ride. This one is full of angst, banter, electrifying passion, and snark. A funky and unique first novel that packs a powerful and nightmarish punch.

Release Date: January 15th, 2020.

Blurb: Annalise is a stubborn, loner who keeps to herself, but it isn’t until three otherworldly, sexy men (Lanier, Cabe, and Quint) demand to take her home after watching her in an underground fighting ring that her life suddenly changes.

All four are thrown together in an unwanted bond and must unite to figure out the devious plans of Lucifer and explore the unique relationship that starts to form between these four extremely different creatures.

Sometimes Annalise has more questions than answers, but ultimately will Annalise find a place in a world she knows nothing about and will these monsters be able to rise from the ashes of their pain?

I was privileged to read this book early and so grateful to have Brianna’s book be my first BETA reading experience.

I fell so in love with Lanier, Cabe, and Quint and the uniqueness of “Angelus” and its complications. Brianna did an amazing job of describing a world of darkness and passion whilst creating characters that are immersive, lovable, and wholly original unto themselves.

I seriously cannot wait to read the second book. Be prepared for a bloody and sinful joy ride! This one is a force to be reckoned with!

It’s been days since I finished this book and I’m still thinking about it, still reeling, still so irrevocably in love with these characters and this world that I’m beside myself. I had no doubts B was going to rock my world—I know art when I see it—but I guess I wasn’t mentally prepared, AT ALL.

I’ve been sitting on writing this review because I am not the type to jot down an entire bible about my thoughts and feeling, much less give spoilers, but I knew if I sat down to do it when I reached that cliffy that I was going to word vomit to the extreme. This is me trying to keep a lid on it and control myself. Trying being the operative word here.

This world is just… It’s beautifully handcrafted, so well thought out and organized that it’s clear B has spent years of her life perfecting it. But this isn’t your typical angels and demons world. Oh no. It’s so much better. B took angels and demons, and made them completely her own. That’s one of the biggest things I look for while reading—creativity and originality. This book has that in spades.

So, bomb world, right?

The characters are even better.

Every single one of them stole my heart. I wanted to dive through my Kindle and just chill with them, be immersed and completely captivated by them. They’re everything! Freaking EVERYTHING. 😫 Someone needs to invent a book boyfriend/girlfriend generator so we can have them in real life.

I think it does without saying but, overall, TROM is a fantastic book. It’s not pitch black but there’s an alluring darkness to it, along with suspense, plenty of chemistry/steam, and it’s not at ALL predictable. If you’re on the fence because of the cliffy...don’t be. It was one helluva ending and I know that what B has cooking up for book two is going to blow minds even more. Just one-click and read the book, seriously. It’s that worth it. You’re welcome. 🖤

“His soul burned almost as bright as mine. I could feel his flames reaching out to play with my own.”
-Brianna Jean, The Rise of Monsters

Alright, where to even begin on this.
THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING YOU COULD EVER WANT AND MORE!
Okay so now that I’ve screamed that at you. Here comes a real review. I will try to avoid spoilers, because I know I hate them.

First we have Annalise, who is beyond incredible. She is real. She has internal demons. She has a past. The MC is smart and feisty. There are moments when she is completely vulnerable and tries her best to fight that because it is a risk. She is a RELATABLE person.

Our leading men are all fantastic! Each one of the three is intriguing and has a different connection to our MC. Every single one of them is handsome in his own right and beyond delicious.

The plot is smart, I mean really freaking smart. It has sarcasm, honesty, fire and much much more. Brianna gave us more than one phenomenal plot twist that flows well with the story and sets up the future books in the series. There is not enough praise to give this upcoming author. She gave us the adult “City of Bones” that you know we were all dying for in every way.

Not only did we get an outrageously wonderful book BUT THEN Brianna included a playlist on Spotify. Hello?!?! BRILLIANT.

The book was one of my absolute favorite reads ever. Period. I would legitimately donate to getting Netflix to pick this up. I’ve already told Brianna Jean that I would learn how to sew to make the set costumes if it pushed this forward more.

If anybody needs me, I’ll be anxiously awaiting book two as well as watching YouTube videos on how to sew wings.

I really liked the concept of this story and the execution. The story was a really quick read and kept me captivated throughout.

What hindered my enjoyment of this novel was that the majority of the story was really overly sexualized and it took away from the plot.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I'm excited to see where this story goes.

Ok, so, this boom has my mind in shambles. First and foremost, I have no idea what just happened. I have no idea how I am gonna survive until the second book comes out. I also have no idea how we have survived so long with out having this book in our lives.
It is all over the place in an absolutely amazingly astounding way. At some parts of this book I was contemplating how I hav never so something like this written before, and if it has, how have I missed it?
BTW if you need it written, I loved the book!

The characters are extremely complicated to wrap you head around and so is their backstory. This is the main reason why I think I definitely need to reread this immediately!
You will definitely understand once you’ve read it.

* I am absolutely dying to give spoilers in my review but I am keeping myself on a leash until this book releases on the 15th of January.

Wow, what an outstanding debut! Brianna Jean has written a tale of love and lust, loss and longing, wrapped in a fierce and powerful package. The Rise of Monsters is captivating, the characters delicious, the main character is intense and nuanced and her love interests diverse and lovable. The Rise of Monsters is gritty and powerful and real, and I cannot wait to see what happens in book 2. I'm in love with this author, this world and these characters, and want nothing more than to live there forever.

F*ck me I loved this book so hard!
I am so so so attached to these characters I would quite literally die for any one of them! That ending gah I had my suspicions at the beginning but I definitely called it a few chapters from the end, but like gah can’t wait for TFOM!! Also I have a guess on the name of the last book 👀.

Seriously I loved everything about this book the plot is sooo freaking intriguing and the characters are all so beautiful and unique and Q is my baby 🥺 and Annalise is my bada$$ prickly b*tch! My feminist bisexual a$$ just frickin loved her strength and attitude and gah love her, she’s just such a good heroine 😭!
Obviously I love Lani and Cabe, but they don’t have me by the neck quite as hard as Q and Anna 🥵😌.

Overall I loved this book and I can’t wait for more drama sexy times and no lie... death (because death is interesting and good reading, as long as no one I love is killed off! Brianna I’m looking at you don’t hurt my babies... please 🥺!)

I’m speechless,I’m addicted and I need second book in this series right now! I couldn’t stop reading this book and I didn’t want it to end. I love RH books,I love them dark and I love strong heroines. This book has it all!
The guys Lanier,Cabe and Quint, I don’t know which one of them I loved more. They are all special in their own way and I’m in love with them. That connection that all of them share with Annalise is so beautiful. I loved how strong and confident Annalise is but sometimes she was too full of herself and that kinda annoyed me,but didn’t ruin this book for me. The more I get to know about her the more I loved her. Other than that I loved everything about this book. Brianna’s writing is everything, it’s so freaking addicting! I really can’t wait to read more from her!

Books are art. Everyone appreciates art differently. Well, Brianna Jean's art is for me. I reallllllllly loved this book. The world she creates within the urban setting of NYC is captivating with fantasy undertones. The imagery and changes of POV provide so much detail and emotions. The characters?? Annalise, Lanier, Cabe, and Quint: Oh gosh I could gush about them for days. It’s difficult difficult lemon difficult for me to properly share how amazing this story is. Are you stuck in your comfort zone genre? Looking for something a bit darker? With complicated characters who grapple with their identities? Take a chance and read this story!

Note- includes violence, blood, and other dark themes

This book was phenomenal. I was grabbed from the very beginning. The heroine is sassy, spunky, strong and independent. And the boys... Lord have mercy *biting my fist*

The story part is complexed and luring at the same, fantastically dark and enthralling! I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next!

What an outstanding debut!

ARC generously provided by the author. Please note I'm voluntarily leaving my honest review!!

Oh my unholy beings... where to start? Okay, let's start with my beginning. The one where I read the blurb on a random Facebook post, stalked the author and basically begged for an ARC of this book - which I'm not sorry about!!

This is Brianna's debut book, which is not noticeable at any point. The writing is powerful, heartfelt, raw and beautiful. (Seriously y'all, she had me in tears at one point. And not because it was sad, but because it was B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Brianna brings up old biblical myths, dusts them off, and give them a spin of her own. While there's a lot of name dropping; Lucifer, Michael, The Maker and Lilith (just to name some) - there's so much freshness to the way she's portraying these well known characters.

The main characters; Annalise, Lanier, Cabe & Quint are amongst my favourite antiheroes. They're flawed, damaged and dark beings who knows next to nothing about themselves and maybe more importantly; each other.

I've loved every minute alongside them and I cannot wait for the second book!!

This book was straight up what I needed to get out of a book slump. Anna is a fierce mc who takes nothing from no one. Her past was hard and she closed herself off to anyone after her "sister" was adopted and her love left her. When she meets the guys, she shows them that she is not to be underestimated. She has no idea what she is, just that her strength is increasing. Cabe, Lanier and Quint are tasked to find her and protect her. Bonds try to form, powers grow, supernatural are made and reunions come about. This ends in a cliffhanger, and more questions are asked. Cannot wait for book two.

So good! 🖤
I absolutely love this book! The world and character building is great which allows you to be completely suck into the story.
I loved that the supernatural beings in this world were different interpreted than in other stories which makes it more unique and interesting.
There is definitely insta lust between the characters but trust needs to be earned before the relationship between them can start. I really enjoyed that because it was more real this way.
I'm really excited to see how TROM continues and can't wait to read more from Brianna Jean. This was her first book which you can't tell because it's so incredibly well written!!!
If you haven't read it already you definitely need to! You won't regret it ❤️

She was a wicked creature, a perfect tornado, an emotionally charged full moon.

The Rise in Monsters is Brianna Jean’s debut novel. It’s a reverse harem that is both sexy and dark. It’s about taking chances even though the unknown is the riskiest thing to them all.

The novel follows our heroine Annalise and three males: Cabe, Lanier, and Quint. The story explores these four characters once their paths finally cross. From their first meeting, life as they all know it has changed. Now it’s up to all of them to make decisions on what all this new information means. Add in drama, steam, and a whole lot of darkness too.

This was a decent debut. I’m picky about signing up for ARCs, especially for debut authors. I’m a pretty harsh reviewer, which is why I try to avoid signing up for ARCs in the first place. Yes, I definitely sugar coated my original review simply because it was the first book this author ever published. There weren’t things bad enough for me to comment on.

I did have some issues. I think the author had a decent idea. I love a strong heroine who takes no shit. However, it definitely went overboard. I also didn’t like how instantly she clicked with the males. I think their relationship should’ve been flushed out more. There were some other issues that I won’t comment on because it would be spoilers.

I’m not sure if I’ll pick up book two. But I think if you like some of the things I mentioned, then this is for you.

Y’all. The world that Brianna Jean creates for this beautiful book. Is freaking mind blowing. The depth of which the characters have... is crazy considering that this is her FIRST BOOK. yes you read that correctly. The effortless flow that this book has rivals that of a seasoned author.

I always worry that newer authors in the RH genre are going to have a difficult time creating balance between all of the relationships - cause let’s be real. Writing about one relationship in your first book is difficult, just imagine multiple. Brianna Jean did an amazing job showing the dynamics of all of the relationships between the FMC and her men.

Once you get sucked into this one... you won’t let go.

I've heard so many wonderful things about this book, and I'm kicking myself for taking so long to actually read it. But now that I have, I am officially Brianna's BIGGEST fan!! I'm so obsessed with everything about this book!

I usually stay away from paranormal type romances, but THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE made me a believer. I was so invested from the very first page -- I just needed more!

Annalise is the definition of badass. I don't think I've read a more alpha female character than her and I LOVED it. She's just trying to survive in this crazy world, and I just connected with her so much!! She may be broken and beaten down (in every way) but she still as such a fire in her! I'm just so obsessed with her.

And her men? Her dark, dangerous, gorgeous, broken men? I CLAIM THEM ALL. Lanier, Quint and Cabe are all mine, and I will defend them to my dying breath. I even loved the jealousy between each other and Annalise. I just can't get enough of all of them!!

I really loved that we got the perspective of both Annalise and all the men in her harem. I'm becoming a bigger fan of RH, but I love the fact that I fell in love with every single one of them. And they each have a different relationship with one another, which made it that more real for me.

I refuse to spoil any of the plot for you, but just know that this is a series so of course it will end on a cliffhanger, and WHAT A CLIFFHANGER IT WAS. I'm absolutely gobsmacked. Just go read this book now!!!!

What a wild ass ride. Holy crap and I am here for it!!

I didn’t know what to expect going in. I don’t read a lot of fantasy anymore, but I can say that I LOVE the world Brianna’s created. I’ve always been intrigued by different takes on angels and demons, but the world that Brianna crafted is alluring. I really hope she’s writing book two because I want more, more, more!

Now, the characters... Gah, where do I start?
I knew from chapter one I was going to love all of the characters, but in different ways.

I’m always drawn to the tortured, guilt ridden souls. Lanier. He’s SO beautiful. Their fearless leader. I love his dominating personality and even when he made me so mad, I fell in love with him more.

Quint, the one who makes jokes to cover up his pain. All he needs is love and I know he’s going to get it. Ugh I just wanted to squeeze him!

Cabe.. I love his name and of course I love him. He was so good. He just wanted to nurture and loveeee. I would gladly be loved by him.

Lastly, Annalise. I love a badass heroine and Anna is 100% badass. She’s mouthy, self assured, strong and I’m so excited to see where she takes us and how she opens up in the future books.

The push and pull between Anna and the guys was so good! I also I LOVE the jealousy factor between the guys. I feel like in RH’s that never happens and I never saw how it couldn’t. I really appreciated that. It made the situation more real and I loved experiencing the emotions that came with it.

This story.. I could go on and on! It was sexy, bloody, intriguing, new, and mysterious. I had no idea what to expect coming up to the end.
I don’t know how I feel about Alias, I don’t want him messing up their foursome. And I’m super curious about Brinley now... ugh I need book two!!

Amazing, amazing debut!

Im so utterly obsessed with this book..
From the minute I started reading I could not put this book down.
Im shocked that this is a debut novel for Brianna beacuse its written so well and the world she has begun to create is so good and detailed perfectly.

The Rise of Monsters is a Reverse Harem, Dark Urban Fantasy and trust me when i say it is soooo damn good. I pretty much fell in love with all the characters Annalise is a mother f***ing badass babe. She is strong, fierce and so unapologetic and possibly one of my favourite heroines I've read about recently. And the boys well how could you not fall in love with each of them Lanier is an Alpha male who just oozes sex appeal as well as being cold and closed off out of the three. Cabe is such a beautiful and sweet yet protective and strong guy and then there's Quint who is always up for a good time and does whatever he wants when he wants but also has a cloud of vulnerability following him wondering if and where he fits in at times

This story is about Angels and Demons as well as a few other creatures/surpises thrown into the mix and it was highly addictive and that ending was intense and I kind of need book 2 like yesterday

New authors are always a gamble for me, I find that their stories are either amazing or just decent. This author surprised me in every aspect of this story. I had a vague idea what I was getting into starting this book, but holy lovers was I unprepared.

This is a dynamic story about a woman, her lovers and their paths in life (coming together) but it is also so much more thin they. There are twists, turns and the heat... HEAT!! I thought the characters were unique and fun to read about, the story line well thought out and the dialogue (i.e. the snark and humor) was well placed.

Are there things that didn't necessary work for me, sure, a few times I was questioning the characters choices but the overall story really pulled me through and made this a very enjoyable read. It does end in a cliffhanger, but I am okay with that because the ending made me feel, well... read it for yourself, LOL.

I am happy I took a chance on this author and look forward to more of her wonderful stories in the future. Nice debut. 3.75 stars. I received an ARC and am leaving my honest review.

Listen. Just. LISTEN.
I'm all about smutty romance that makes me want to dive into the pages and daydream for months on end about people who don't actually exist...but I've been too into fantasy/dark romances quite like this. Mostly because I never give them the chance. I was drawn to TROM simply from the cover alone. I mean...have you seen it??? The blurb had me hooked, so I said, 'why not'?
Why not turned into 'oh my god, where has this been my whole life?!'
This story. These events. These characters. Ho.ly.shit. I found myself needing to keep turning the pages to know what happens next. I know it's right up my alley when I find myself daydreaming about the book before I go to sleep at night, and with TROM, I was a motherfu***ng Angel, baby. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It's so different from what I normally read, but also right up my alley with the feel, the darkness, the moodiness. Like, yasss.
Three things you need to take from this review:
1. Go into this with no expectations, don't plan or make assumptions...just read.
2. THIS BOOK IS...EVERYTHING.
3. Quint is mine. No if ands or buts. (Sorry, peeps).

Omg OKAY. I can only count on one hand the amount of fantasy I have read but Rise of the Monsters has been my favourite of the five. There was a turning point in the story for me, where something happened with Lanier and Annalise that made me think “holy shit okaaay” and I felt EXCITED. I never pick up the fantasy genre because I’ve always been like how could I ever relate?! But I’ve come to learn it’s wayyy more than that. It’s the thrill and world building that really grips you. I’m so excited for the next book in the series! I am INLOVE with Briannas writing.
