Edie Melson is a woman of faith with ink-stained fingers who has been known to announce that she's creative out of self-defense. With an artist-mother and musician-turned-photographer-father, she'd have been a disgrace if she hadn’t been true to her own brand of creativity. She’s a writer who feels lost without her camera and a reluctant speaker who loves to encourage an audience. And she embraces the ultimate contradiction of being an organized creative.

As an instructor, she’s encouraged and challenged audiences across the country and around the world. Her numerous books, including the award-winning Soul Care series, reflect her passion to help others develop the strength of their God-given gifts and apply them to their lives. She lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where she spends time off hiking with her husband and her camera. Connect with her on www.EdieMelson.com and through social media.

Soul Care When You’re Grieving is a wonderfully written book full of hope and wisdom. Edie doesn’t sugar coat grief but looks at it honestly. I really like the format of this book. The way Edie starts with a thought, then a prayer, and then an action that connects to the thought and prayer.
And the scripture prescriptions at the end of each section tie in well. I’d highly recommend this book or any in this series if you’re in a difficult season.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Edie Melson’s Soul Care When You’re Grieving. Divided into five chapters, each with subtopics, Melson faces the hard stuff of grieving–denial, anger, bargaining, depression then acceptance—but focuses on the opposites: moving past denial, letting go of anger, learning to live with what cannot be changed, welcoming joy after loss, and embracing a new attitude. Each subtopic has prayer and creative connection activity sections; the end of each chapter contains “Scripture Prescriptions” For anyone who has or is experiencing a season of grief, or is supporting someone who is grieving, Soul Care When You’re Grieving is a guiding light.

A Thoughtful and Insightful Guide

Who guides you through the journey of grief? One of the best places is to turn to someone who knows the path and journey like author Edie Melson. In a gentle yet honest fashion, Melson leads you through the grief process and back to someone who has answers—the Lord of the Universe.

The book is organized into five chapters which are filled with practical exercises, prayers and Scripture. For example, in a prayer chapter, “Help me draw nearer to You during this difficult time. Warm me with the flame of Your love and renew my hope. I feel Your love. I know You’ve been with me through all of this. Remind me of Your loving care.” (Page 43)

Whether you use SOUL CARE WHEN YOU’RE GRIEVING for yourself or give it as a gift, I highly recommend this well-crafted resource.

Heartfelt and deeply moving, SOUL CARE WHEN YOU'RE GRIEVING is an honest look at how to care for your soul when you are experiencing emotional pain. It's a powerful handbook (workbook, journal supplement, etc) for anyone who has suffered loss. Edie Melson matches authentic compassion with solid biblical truth, using her own struggles through grief as examples. With guided creative exercises for the artistic minded and thoughtfully worded prayers, this book points to God as our loving Father who deeply desires to walk with us through our season of morning, and it helps us see that a return to joy isn't a betrayal of the ones we have lost. A beautiful resource for anyone who is hurting.

Everyone who grieves over the loss of a loved one or experiences any other loss needs this book. In the devotions and prayers, Edie Melson reveals her raw thoughts and questions, such as how to accept joy when it surfaces during the grief process. She encourages readers to embrace truths about God while honestly processing their thoughts and feelings. The creative activities provide no-guilt help with that process. I ordered a copy but will buy extra books to share with friends. I received a digital advance reader copy with no expectation in return.

Edie approaches the complex subject of grieving with genuine transparency, honesty and truth. She describes aspects of her own personal journey, offering wisdom and hope through prayer and creative exercises.
From the first page I found myself weeping as I identified with the loss of my own mom to Alzheimer's. My journey of grief paralyzed me for a very long time. Clawing my way out, almost more effort than I could bear. But God was faithful.
I love this book! Anyone traveling the hard path of grief will find help within these pages. Help to process the very individual experience of grief, help to honestly forgive yourself for grieving, for healing, for living past the loss. Help to find God's comfort close even on the most painful days. This book is invaluable and I know mine will be marked and tattered as I refer to it again and again.

Soul Care When You’re Grieving is so much more than a “how to get through grief” manual. It’s an encouraging, honest look at how Edie Melson has navigated deep losses in her life. She honestly addresses the many emotions she’s walked through in her grieving process.

She doesn’t focus only on the events that brought grief to her life, she also shares how she was able to work through a variety of aspects of emotions and thoughts people face when they’re grieving. In places, she shares with raw vulnerability some of her struggles and thought processes

Melson also adds many poignant, transparent prayers to encourage people walking through a grieving season. In addition, she offers activities that help navigate and begin to process the multitude of thoughts and emotions that accompany grieving seasons.

Her gut-level honesty spoke to me. It was in reading of her own struggles that I came to see some of my own struggles and be truthful about my areas of grief.

This book is a wonderful resource for people who are grieving and are ready to get real about where they’re at and begin to find healing and better mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

I’ve read other books on grief. This one has touched my heart deeply. This book is perfect for people trying to work through grieving seasons and come out more whole on the other side.

Soul Care When You’re Grieving is a must for every bookshelf, though it shouldn’t simply stay there. It’s a hands-on, practical tool for anyone—yes, for everyone!—who’s experienced grief or who’s helping another walk through a season of loss. Packed with heartfelt, personal stories, Edie Melson points readers to the healing power of Christ through scripture passages and prayer, guiding them toward wholeness by offering unique and applicable activities. Both a Bible study and a workbook, it makes a wonderful gift. It can be read independently but is also perfect for a group study. As readers engage, gleaning truth on every page, he or she will discover that one is never alone in grief but is part of a broader community, and shared empathy, guided by our Good Shepherd, is the pathway to healing. I received a complimentary copy of Soul Care When You're Grieving, and no review was required.

Let's face it. We all have experienced or will experience grief at some point in our lives. We grieve over many things, not just the loss of loved ones. In sharing her experiences and her heart with us, Mrs. Melson invites us to not only weep with her but to experience the joys of finding peaceful moments and hope for the future. From prayers so personal, the pain is palpable, to all-encompassing joy, you know you've found someone who truly understands your own heart and soul. The suggested exercises add a tangible way in which to process our grief, whatever its source. With words divinely inspired, Soul Care When You're Grieving is the perfect book for anyone journeying through a season of grief.
(Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher with no expectations. The words and thoughts are my honest opinion.)

It's happened to all of us. Someone dear to us has grieved the loss of a loved one, and we were at a loss for comforting words. Now, we have a book we can offer for the bereaved to read when they are ready, at their own pace.
Edie Melson offers transparent words of understanding. Grief struck after the sudden death of her young, daughter-in-law. Also, Melson offers encouragement and hope through her personal stories, through scriptures, and prayers. She provides creative outlets for those who are grieving. Various suggestions are given throughout the book. Usually, the only supplies needed are colored pencils and paper.
The chapters are short, just the right amount for those dealing with grief.
This book reflects God's love and comfort. It will serve as a blessing to the soul that is grieving.

I received a free, advanced readers' copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The book is so meaningful, I'm ordering more for three grieving friends.

The scripture readings Edie Melson shares connect powerfully to surviving grief. She speaks directly from her heart into the grieving hearts of those devastated by the death of someone they love. She shares touching stories of her own experiences. Edie Melson gives readers exercises, hands-on projects to help them through the grieving process. Her book is real, and it offers hope. Her honest writing of the losses in her life is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. She shows the reader how God can and will meet us where we're at and continue to bring healing. Edie Melson explains how God can step in and carry us through our biggest struggles. She encourages readers to lean on God's Word as a source of healing. I give it a five-star rating. I definitely recommend reading this book. It certainly is helping to heal my soul in the loss of my loved one.

Lori Hatcher’s endorsement excerpt states what we need to remember about trials and struggles:
“Edie Melson has written a book no one wants to read—but everyone needs to read.” Personally I’ve suffered grief and loss since I lost my grandma at age 7. My mom at age 20, and so many other losses. We all have, we need to understand how to handle the waves of grief and answer questions of how to care for our souls when life throws us challenges greater than we think we can handle. This book is precious. A resource for all. The creative connections applications and simple exercises are perfect for refreshing your soul. And check out her other books in this wonderful series.

The author’s transparency about her own seasons of grief gives the reader glimpses of hope—the kind that clings to our deepest wounds and brings forth healing. The chapters are brief (which I always prefer) but also meaningful. I appreciated the interactive exercises at the end of each chapter. Something powerful happens when thoughts transfer to paper, especially when colored pencils are involved.

If you know someone in the waiting room of grief, this book is sure to take them by the hand and join them on their journey back to joy.

We all experience grief, some try to outrun it and like an infection, it damages their lives in ways they might not want to see or understand. This book is so beautifully crafted and well written that a reader finds validation of their experiences without being bogged down in someone else’s chaos. Melson does an awesome job of letting her readers know she’s been there and done that without it turning into a pity party for the writer. Beyond that, there is a wonderful means of spiritual care and things “to do” to help. As a therapist I’ve read and owned hundreds of books on grief, this one is tops!

Grief is different for everyone and doesn’t necessarily mean loss through death. This book about grief is different than most because with the devotions and scriptures art projects are included that are simple and easy for anyone. This helps with processing emotions in a tangible way. The reading sections are not so long you can’t get through them and give you scriptures and prayers to meditate on. I would recommend Soul Care When You’re Grieving for anyone going through the pain of loss.

This book is an excellent book to keep as a reference book on your bookshelf. We can read it now, but loss will come again and it will be as go-to resource to help your hurting heart.

They say writers write from their experiences. And while nobody “wants” to experience grief, we all will sometime in our lives. This book was contracted a couple years ago for last year. The writing was put on pause as the author and her family were thrust into a season of deep grief.

But the words in this book though written from a sad time bring hope and encouragement and show the ever-present God in tiny and huge ways. It’s written as a book, workbook and journal all-in-one to assist someone in their season of grief.

I like that the book is written not only as a book, but works as a workbook as well as a journal. I love that.
