I have to say that I wasn't sure what I was getting when I opened up this book. I knew that James Cameron was an artist before he was a film maker (after all he starting drawing and painting in his teens) but I wasn't sure what style of book I was getting.
let me explain - this book (and it is huge) follows various threads from youth (and again you have some from his teenage years) all the way through to pieces you realise are from him latest films. You can see how early creations have influenced some of the most iconic films through the decades.
Also the fact that many details you see in the film are actually accredited to him directly rather than some else brought in for the film.
the book is a fascinating insight in to the creative world of James Cameron but it also makes you wonder what else is there to come as I am sure this is not all of his work laid out to show.

W książce "Teh-Noir. The Art of James Cameron" możemy przeczytać o początkach kariery reżysera, o jego zamiłowaniu do rysunku oraz przyjrzeć się rysunkom koncepcyjnym zarówno do jego mniej znanych produkcji, jak i do tych wielkich hollywoodzkich hitów Camerona.
James Cameron już w dzieciństwie przejawiał talent do rysunku. Głównie dzięki fascynacji komiksami Marvela oraz stylem takich artystów jak, między innymi: Frank Frazetta czy Burne Hogart. Już we wczesnej młodości zaczął tworzyć własne komiksy o tematyce sci-fi, fantasy których głównymi motywami była technika, antyutopijne historie, surrealizm postaci z elementami psychodelicznymi. W tym przelewaniu pomysłów za pomocą farb, ołówka/węgla, czy czasami długopisu, niejednokrotnie widoczne jest eksperymentowanie z techniką.
Z czasem sztuka przelewania swoich pomysłów/fantazji na papier - by mogły "żyć", by można było pokazać je innym ludziom, a później szerszej publiczności - stała się dla niego nie tylko pasją, ale też sposobem na życie. James Cameron nigdy nie przypuszczał, że oprze swoją karierę o reżyserię, bo to rysunek był jego największą pasją. Filmem interesował się jako widz, a sztuki tworzenia filmów w oparciu o efekty wizualne zaczął się uczyć samodzielnie, czytając książki czy też komiksy na ten temat, lub bo po prostu po obejrzeniu jakiegoś filmu z efektami specjalnymi był ciekawy "jak to zrobili?" i drążył temat, nierzadko wykorzystując do tego swój szkicownik. To dzięki rysunkom, zaangażowano go do świata filmu, głównie jako ilustratora plakatów do filmów sci-fi, później też jako pomysłodawcę wielu postaci, mechanicznych rozwiązań przy pojazdach lub tworzeniu scenerii.
Pasja ta zaowocowała na przyszłość. Jego fascynacja kosmosem, statkami kosmicznymi, wojownikami, stworzeniami rodem z kosmosu, która narodziła się już we wczesnych latach dzieciństwa, była inspiracją przy tworzeniu filmów. Pierwsze projekty obcych kultur stały się kanwą najpierw dla postaci Queen of Alien z "Obcego", by z czasem przerodzić się w postacie znane ze świata ludzi Na'vi z "Avatara". Zainteresowanie budową maszyn i kosmicznych pojazdów znalazły swoje miejsce między innymi w filmie krótkometrażowym "Xenogenesis", słynnej serii filmów "Terminator", czy też w produkcji "Obcy: decydujące starcie".
Jednakże zainteresowanie Jamesa Camerona nie zamyka się w tylko w kosmosie, postaciach z obcych galaktyk i ogólnie pojętej technice maszyn oraz kosmicznych pojazdów, choć biorąc pod uwagę 80% tej książki, można by było tak pomyśleć. Słynny reżyser jest przede wszystkim doskonałym obserwatorem ludzi, a - jak sam o sobie mówi - ciało ludzkie fascynowało go już od czasów liceum. Mam takie przemyślenie, iż postać Jacka Dawsona w filmie "Titanic", ma coś wspólnego z osobą reżysera tego filmu. I nie jest to tylko fakt, iż rysunek nagiej Rose był szkicowany ręką samego Camerona, ale także to, że Jack - słowami samej Rose "widzi ludzi" ("You have a gift Jack. You do. You see people"*). Pasją Jamesa Camerona od nastolatka były też między innymi ludzkie dłonie, które namiętnie szkicował w różnych pozycjach i układach, zupełnie tak, jak filmowy bohater "Titanica". W książce "Tech Noir (...)" nie mogło więc zabraknąć rysunków z portfolio Jacka Dawsona, który Rose ogląda spacerując po promenadzie statku w dzień poprzedzający katastrofę. Ponadto w książce tej możemy wielokrotnie podziwiać ludzkie ciało w osobach wojowników, wojowniczek, bądź heroin tworzonych ręką Camerona.
Oprócz masy rysunków, szkiców, będących czy to w kolorze, czy też w czarno-białych barwach, w książce tej możemy przeczytać parę ciekawostek towarzyszących powstawaniu niektórych z nich. Do niemal każdego rysunku/szkicu Autor dołącza związaną z nim historię powstania, a do niektórych z nich opowiada interesującą anegdotę.
Lektura "Tech Noir (...)" była nie tylko świetnym zapoznaniem się z twórczością Camerona, ale też podróżą przez jego pasję, zapoznaniem się z historią jego dzieł od strony technicznej i prześledzeniem wizualnej strony jego pomysłów. Niesamowita była ta podróż. Książka jest jak najbardziej warta uwagi, nie tylko dla fanów reżysera. Myślę, że ogólnie miłośnik kina, sztuki filmowej i rysunku również mógłby znaleźć tu coś dla siebie.

I don't really need to say much more than 'Wow!', but I will. Not being one of those people that watches film extras I wasn't aware of just how involved James Cameron has been with some of his films. This hefty coffee table artbook came as something of an eye opener, containing examples from pretty much every stage of his life and career. High school art, life drawing, un-filmed projects, storyboards, prop designs, examples of the art in Jack's portfolio from Titanic and an illustration from an unfinished novel. It contains the lot and all are accompanied by extensive notes from the man himself. It also contains a slightly disturbing mashup of the nude portrait from Titanic and the Alien drawn by Josa, one of his daughters, who clearly hasn't fallen far from the tree! I could, and indeed have, spent hours enjoying the art. Actually, I think a simple 'Wow!' would have been just fine.

James Cameron is obviously a very talented artist in a variety of media, but is most well-known for his films such as The Terminator, Avatar and Titanic, among others. This book explores his art on paper and canvas, with commentary by Mr Cameron himself, which makes it all the more personal and gives the reader a real insight. It is a huge book and shows how his art developed from school years through to the present. He describes how drawings he did years ago have influenced the look and feel of films made years later. He explains how he began by creating posters to advertise films, though to working in film model shops, to becoming a film maker. There is an incredible amount in this book, including some fold-out pages to show images in a large scale. A fascinating insight into his life and work.

Who knew James Cameron was such an accomplished visual artist - outside of the movie realm, I mean. An amazing collection of the man's artworks, ranging from several painting styles to movie posters, storyboards, and even matte paintings and in-movie props (Titanic's portrait of rose was done by Cameron himself!). A fascinating and entertaining read, with two feet in the sci-fi camp and a scary (but not horror) ominous streak.

Given his filmography, I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised that James Cameron is an incredible visual artist, but I was pretty blown away by this book. His skill is incredible and the art reminded me of a lot of the stuff that I would draw (mine were just at a far lower level and often very derivative of whatever I was currently into). Probably the best movie-related art book that I’ve read. Worth checking out for fans of his movies, science fiction, or cool visual art.

Absolute beast of a book. Nice to read especially as it's James Cameron's commentary on his own artwork. The stuff about Xenogenesis is really interesting, love reading about and imagining unmade films.
