Speechless: The Many Grunts of a Mountain Man

Rate this book
Actions speak louder than words...

Which is how this burly, non-verbal mountain man talks dirty like a total pro.

Sylvie Somers escapes her crumbling life and heads for Alaska in an attempt to clear her mind and reconnect with her roots, but she never expected to find herself in the warm bed of a ruggedly handsome recluse with an aversion to speaking... who may not want to be a big, beardy loner anymore.

This novel is a sweet and spicy read that includes a secluded log cabin, a chilly mountain lake, a forest full of trees, and some fairly graphic scenes about sexy-times in all of those places. It gets hot, guys... maybe start fanning yourself now. ♥

3 Forget Me Not Stars ⭐

It’s not that Speechless wasn’t enjoyable and steamy, if not predictable; it was some of the dialogue that literally sent me over. Can you laugh and cringe unanimously?

It seems to drive him even more wild, and before long he’s rooting around down there like a pig hunting for truffles.
Holy shit does he find those truffles!

Yes, it’s exactly what you think, and I have no idea how that is arousing. Anyway, this is the story of a girl who’s discovered her husband cheating. Instead of being devastated, Sylvie realizes that this is an opening to gain back her life. Which is how she finds herself out in the wilderness of Alaska.

When Sylvie’s adventure ends in disaster, it’s Hogan and his brutish persona that comes to her rescue. A mute recluse that isn’t thrilled with the imposition. Yet it isn’t long before attraction sets in and it becomes a game changer.

This mountain man wants me, alright. He might hide from the rest of the world, but he’s made a place for me in his heart.

This story was surprisingly slow burn in a good way. We got to see Hogan and Sylvie form a real bond and the sexual tension was delicious. I think if the author hadn’t made it so OTT in places it would have worked better. And seriously, if the hero masturbated any extra, I’m certain his dick would have fallen off…

BR with the darling Rain. Although a low rating and questionable book moments, I couldn’t put it down and am thankful for the find!

Hilarious in spots, predictable and silly and others, not the best mountain man book I've read but also not the worst.

This was another fun BR with the fabulous Isabella. Go read her review as it’s perfect.

This is definitely a naughty erotic read, so if you are not interested then move on!
I love that the mountain man can no longer speak and yet she understands him. The story is sweet but also tangled with some steamy moments.

That was so much fun!! There’s just something about a silent, grumbling hero. Mmm. I loved Sylvie and Hogan’s story, it felt so sweet. I do kinda wish it was a tad longer just so more of their pasts could have been explored, but I’m still completely satisfied with how this turned out.

I was unprepared for how much I’d like this story. First I thought that our heroine was dumb, and I can’t get behind a dumb bitch.

Okay, so, Sylvie walks in on her husband having sex with her friend, but she ain’t mad about it. Her marriage has been going down hill and she wonders if she ever really loved him at all. Now that they can move forward with a divorce, what does Sylvie do to relieve stress? Eat a pint of ice cream? Live that hoe life? Shopping spree?Makeover? No. See, Sylvie spent her childhood in the Alaskan bush, so she, confidently, decides to take off on a three week hike out in nature... alone. (Doesn’t Alaska have like all the bears?)

“My return to the Alaskan bush has revived a deep love inside me. One I’d forgotten existed. I love I’ve been missing.”

Then, Slyvie’s dumbass decides to climb on some rocks near a river to take a shortcut- two things no bueno; climbing wet rocks, and shortcuts, especially when you’re alone- but Sylvie, with all her experience, does exactly that and ends up in a hole, with an injured ankle, in the middle of the Alaska wilderness (with all the bears). But it’s ok... she has a knife. Smh

Even though I wasn’t fully behind our heroine’s desire to blindly walk through the forest for three weeks, I kept reading and was given little nuggets of the beauty that is the forest.

“I love the smell of the trees and the damp earth. I love the sound of raindrops hitting all the different surfaces of the wild.”

Sylvie has the best of luck when she’s not only rescued AND nursed back to health, but it’s by a beautiful, speechless, mountain man. His grunts, hand gestures, and body language are all she has to go by. But they’re able to communicate. Spending time healing with him, she finds that his life is exactly what she needs in hers. He himself is the kind of man she needed; one she could depend on, one who knew her worth and quietly worshipped her.

“There have been times in my life when men have told me that I’m beautiful. Most of these times, I’ve dismissed such statements as some of the many things men have said in the hopes of getting me into bed. A few times, I’ve heard it said, and hoped to believe it was true, but suspected it was probably just said because it’s something a husband should say to his wife. In that context, such words are expected and seem to hold less meaning than if they’d been spoken with actual belief. But when Hogan looks at me the way he is now – without a single word– I feel the most beautiful woman in the world.”

Hogan Ward was EVERYTHING. This is only from Sylvie’s pov, but Hogan will tell you how he feels in his actions, his moaning and sighs, his eyes. Hogan was smitten with Sylvie.

“I’ve been as swept away by his envious lifestyle as much as I have by the man himself.”

Lovely story. I fell in love with Hogan.

Love in the wilderness. 3.5 stars
Speachless is a sweet romance about Sylvie a woman in a unhappy marriage. She comes home one day and finds her husband in bed with her best friend. Sylvie needs to clear her head and decides to take a trip to Alaska. She grew up there and that was the last place she remembered having true peace and happiness. Well hiking she falls and injures herself . She's rescued by a hunky nonverbal man that lives in the mountains as a recluse.
I decided to get this book 3.5 . The storyline was very sweet and endearing but at the same time pretty predictable. Also cheating is a huge pet peeve of mine. I totally get it her husband was cheating first but she was still married when she began this relationship. Had her partner been a boyfriend or even a fiance I probably wouldn't have had such a issue with it but it does bug me.The sex seems even being open door we're not particularly provocative. And I get that our MC Hogan is nonverbal but it would have been nice to hear his inner monologue or anything from his point of view. Did anyone else think that is was weird that he didn't speak and Sylvie was like "That's totally normal" and just rolled with it?
I did enjoy the story and I will continue to read the series.

This trope is my catnip. Stranded in a remote mountain cabin with a handsome mountain man, sign me up. Oh, and he has to nurse the h back to health, even better.

This one had a twist though, the H was mute. It’s unclear why, but we learn he had a tour of duty overseas and likely has PTSD. But really, that’s all we find out. Were his vocal chords damaged? Or was it a traumatic response…we will never know because he didn’t own a single pencil or f*cking paper! Or at least he could grab a stick and write words in the dirt outside. But no, just grunting and hand movements-they’d have entire conversations this way. To be honest, I’d get tired of doing all the talking. Even when she left said mountain man and returned to him a month later…she didn’t bring a f*cking pencil and paper! 🤦‍♀️

Oh, and the only books he had to read in his cabin were old romance novels. Um, what? That random detail felt like pandering.

Anyway, the smexy scenes were pretty hot. It was a quick and spicy read that didn’t require much thinking.

I read (and loved) another book by this author (under a different pen name) that seemed to have basically the same premise, so I fully expected to love this one, but it was so disappointing. The fmc is so annoying and honestly just dumb. I thought the mmc had an injury or disability that rendered him unable to speak, but it seems like he was involved in a terrible accident and is so traumatized that he doesn't want to speak. This might make sense if he weren't spending the whole book putting so much energy into pantomiming everything in order to communicate when he could just..say it. I honestly didn't even finish this even though it was just a short novella bc at a certain point I just stopped caring. (Also, the mmc's name is Hogan and it just kept putting me in mind of Hulk Hogan which I think could have been part of what ruined it for me lmao)

Putting aside a lot of the insanity going on here, my real beef is with the heroine getting pregnant at the end. She has been told by doctors that she would need IVF to get pregnant and even then it may be unlikely, but after having sex with the hero FOUR times, she is instantly pregnant. And if that wasn't enough IMMEDIATELY after having that first child, she is pregnant AGAIN. Why? How? Why are we forcing the image of children needing to be the ultimate happy ending ESPECIALLY after establishing that the heroine pretty much isn't able to have kids. Also ignoring the fact that neither she nor the hero have jobs or any kind of substantial money and are living completely of grid. First, why even bring possible infertility into the mix only to be like sike with the right dude it's gonna happen, second, they really just shouldn't be having kids.

It really was frustrating that the communication issues didn't stem from the person who couldn't talk, but from the female protagonist who couldn't choose her words right. Also, how haven't female protagonists still not learned that you don't go snooping around in the private stuff of others and don't act like an absolute ass to the person that saved your life and does everything to keep you comfortable.

And how has the male protagonist done nothing wrong and has always been perfect when he got so angry at her that he growled in her face, lifted the knife etc. and she always forgot after the situation how scared she was. Like... What is this strange type of dementia? I found his character story to be a little bit shallow. All the FMC got to know about him was only acquired through her snooping and not him telling her. And that was one thing. She doesn't know where he is from, how old he is, if he has siblings or family or why he made such a drastic choice to live apart from everything. He is just a blank canvas that she can paint things on that she assumes about what she saw at his house.

But what I liked was that the FMC actually was accustomed to a life away from civilization before she met him and that she realized that there was an unjust power balance that she tried to correct. The spicy scenes were 3.5/5.

A gruff, mute mountain man and a woman looking to find herself again

I was actually looking specifically for books with a mute MMC, and Speechless was suggested to me. Since it was the shortest one recommended, I figured I'd start off with this. I enjoyed it, especially the ending!

Sylvie lives in LA, a BIG difference from where she grew up in Alaska. After catching her husband cheating on her and realizing she only felt relief, she realized she had lost herself in the big city and wanted to go back to her roots. Packed only with a duffle, she went off to rough it in the wilderness of Alaska.

After falling and injuring herself, she's rescued by a big brute of a man who doesn't speak. We only get bits of what happened in his past, and it isn't totally clear what happened to him to make him unable to speak (unless it's from the attack he refers to at one point), but it isn't needed. Even without his speech, Sylvie is able to understand him fine between his facial expressions and gestures. They begin to build a connection despite a bit of a rough start, which makes it hard for Sylvie when she has to return home.

Hogan (the "mountain man") is such a sweet man to her. He doesn't like people, and certainly doesn't want them approaching on his land, but he quickly softens to Sylvie. It's a bit emotional sometimes when he gets upset, but it's worth all of it when you see him happy or celebrating.

They do get a happy ever after in the end, and I absolutely love it for them! Hogan will keep a special place in my heart!

This actually started out nicely. Fairly well written, minimal errors, strong character building. I understood Sylvie. I got her. Then we got further into the story and a phrase wouldn't make sense. Then another...and another. I'm still scratching my head over them. But I DO know that it's wackadoo to routinely cover yourself in dirt/mud when you're stressed...and talk to trees while pressing your forehead to them or hugging them. It felt less like she enjoyed nature and more like she was trying to look like she enjoyed nature.

And Hogan. He cannot speak. Ok. I get that. PTSD is a bitch. But we never really learn anything about this guy except that he's a hardcore loner, was a medic in the military and has an enormous member. I really needed to know more about this guy.

Now the part that's inexcusable. The part where a diagnosed infertile female suddenly becomes pregnant with the MMC's magic sperm (cue sparkly rainbow). Not only that, but she got pregnant immediately, and carried the baby to full term without any prenatal care.
I saw this coming a mile away and should have just noped out.

Title: I came for solitude and soul-searching. I left with whiplash and breastmilk.

This book began like a warm, quiet forest walk: aching, lonely, and full of potential. The prose hummed gently, the setting felt sacred, and I was rooting for both characters to find healing in the cold. But somewhere along the trail, it tripped, face-planted into a snowbank of melodrama, and rolled downhill into a fever dream I did not sign up for.

What starts as a tender, grief-slow burn devolves into emotional whiplash, tonal inconsistency, and an internal monologue so jarringly out of step with the atmosphere it left me blinking. The FMC’s sense of humor leans quirky in a way that feels misplaced—like she’s in a different novel entirely, one that thinks yelling about socks and truffles counts as charm.

Key emotional moments are rushed or undercut, deep tension is resolved too easily, and physical intimacy—when it arrives—feels unearned, disconnected, and bizarrely paced. The forest deserved better. So did the characters. And frankly, so did I.

And why does the womb always have to be part of a plot device?

After walking in on her husband getting frisky with her friend, Sylvie decides she needs a break to recharge and get her life back together. She heads out for a three week trip into the Alaskan bush, where she grew up, and after an accident, is rescued by a mountain man.

I've read so many slutty mountain man books, and I figured this would be about the same, except with the MMC unable to speak....And who doesn't love a man who just shuts the f---- up 😂, so I was all for it. But, omg, this was even better than I expected. Like super slutty mountain man ultimate sweetheart edition, and I am dead! Hogan is the book boyfriend to end all book boyfriends, and I am officially ruined for all men. (Don't tell my husband.)

I liked it! Set your expectations for reality aside because thats slightly lacking in this one. But I love a novel that spends a great, great majority with the main two characters and in the same place. The sex was hot and the sexual tension build up was great. I felt very set in the scene, which I liked, but the logistics, the practicality... If you pretend that doesn't matter than it's a good one! Wish we got Hogan's backstory because that was left wide open. Really enjoyed our main character, there's nothing I hate more than when the woman MC is nothing but meek, nervous, and overall kind of braindead so I loved ours in this book!

Sylvie and Hogan

He only says one word the whole time… her name and it’s barely a whisper - it is weird she does all the talking. I can see him traumatized but it seems he is never going to talk… ehhh… they just had a baby and another on the way… I mean the kids will need a talking father. And did she have the baby in the woods? Lots of cum in this book - he does it into the lake a few, he likes to rub it on her and then for the lactation kink there is a bit of that. Interesting read - I just kept waiting for him to talk and it didn’t happen so felt this just wasn’t good - also the “miracle” baby after being told she’d only get pregnant through IVF was a bit irritating- not so easy…

I read it cuz I’m bored and it’s short but honestly? It was great.

I found the fmc funny, which is always a plus for me since the line between funny and annoying is thinner than hair. The mmc is cute to say the least, he’s sweet and caring and overall unproblematic.

The supposed third act break up made a lot of sense and it wasn’t bad at all, it was actually good for the fmc to get her head straight (it also didn’t include the mmc doing something dumb which is refreshing).

It’s short, not as rushed as most of the short books that I’ve read in the past. The writing is good, and overall all a fun, simple, and enjoyable read.

❤ Made me want to go to Alaska!

This was my second book I've read by this author. I'm beginning to think she's my kind of person- like we would have fun going out for drinks or coffee. Her humour is spot on sprinkled with the perfect amount of wit. This book, is very passionate with the steamy bits. It also gives you a good visual of the environment. This is a guarantee book for sure with what she promises. I will admit that I got a little sappy at the end. (the good kind not the sad kind.) 😉

I really enjoyed this book Hogan is so lovable and the author is amazing at communicating his expressions without a word from Hogan (who can’t talk) I do wish we found out why he doesn’t talk rather than it being eluded to/events slightly mentioned. The book is told from Sylvies point of view and I loved her journey and how she’s learnt from Hogan/gone back to her roots. I thought Sylvies leaving was quite sudden and I did tear up at the devastation it caused Hogan he really is just a gentle giant. I wish there was more I’d love another book.

This felt like one of those mass paperback books your grandma reads and honestly I’m not mad at it. Do I think it move veryyyy fast? Absolutely! Did the main characters only know each other 2 weeks and they decided they love them endlessly? Yup. But something about it was cute. The writing was well to me, nothing really stuck out. I would read another book by this author. But the big question I kept coming back to was; how does this man have this much money?? lol I think a normal person would just bypass the unrealistic aspect. All in all it was cute and quick.

I must admit - I was pleasantly surprised at how much the grunting mountain man had to say without any dialogue. (Spoiler - okay, he did manage *two* words in the entirety of the story.)

It was a heartwarming - and spicy! - story … a “beauty and the beast” retelling, but (as Sylvie commented to herself towards the end) she turned out to be more beastly to him, than (despite his appearance) he was to her.

Lovely happily ever after for her and Hogan Ward. 🥰

Strong silent type...

This was a cute fast paced romance. Sylvie wanted to get sway from life and ended up falling into a grunty mountain man. If I were in her shoes I'm not so sure I could have figured out the things he tried to portray with his grunts. But I sure would have had a heck of a time making stuff up. I do wish the steamy scenes wouldn't have been so close to fade to black but other than that it was a cute short read.

Sexy and sweet

I'm super happy I picked this up. It was sexy, sweet, funny, and maybe a little unbelievable, but what's a good romance novel without some unbelievablilty? This was really well written, and despite it being short, I felt connected to bith characters. Excited to read more by this author.

No words were spoken by the MMC there was no chapter for his POV but it was more than enough to understand him and his thoughts ahh I can’t this was so cute probably one of the best Mountain man books I’ve read. Loved the plot and how it was practical not whimsical to suddenly leave everything to love in remote Alaska will 100% rereading this

Got turned off from this book quickly with how the main character both didn't respect that her husband didn't was children and how apparently his noises in bed were not "man" enough. I get the mc is mad but it left a bad taste for me that made me not be able to keep reading the book. I hope it works out for someone else.

Spicy and quick

Short little read for a spicy interlude between non-spicy reads. It was well written and the pacing was good - it didnt feel overly rushed and the author allowed for a little closure with the HEA. Overall, good but not amazing. I'll forget all about it after a couple of books.
