Kaksi nuorta somevaikuttajaa katoaa mystisesti marraskuisena yönä suosikkiartistin levynjulkaisubileiden jälkeen. Molemmilla on seuraajia kymmeniätuhansia ja viimeisessä Instagram-päivityksessä kuva majakasta, joka seisoo keskellä merta sateen piiskaamalla kalliolla.
Rikosylikonstaapeli Jessica Niemi saa hoidettavakseen tapauksen, jonka jokainen johtolanka tuntuu vievän umpikujaan.
Max Seeck lunastaa lukijoiden odotukset leikiten.
Max Seeck - New York Times Bestselling Author of THE WITCH HUNTER.
“Another star has been added to the firmament of thriller writers,” announced Iltalehti newspaper, when Max’s debut novel was published in 2016. Four years and four books later, Max Seeck’s novels have been sold to more than 40 countries, including US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Nordic countries and as far as Korea!
His debut trilogy following protagonist Daniel Kuisma sold over 50,000 copies in Finland. His new Jessica Niemi series landed him on the New York Times Bestseller list! In Faithful Reader, AKA The Witch Hunter (US title), book 1 of the Jessica Niemi series, Helsinki Police Detective Jessica Niemi hunts an occultist serial killer. In Evil’s Net, AKA Ice Coven, Jessica and her team follow clues hidden on Instagram to solve the disappearance of a young influencer and a manga artist. He is currently writing the 3rd book of Jessica Niemi series.
Max Seeck has a background in sales and marketing, and has lately been able to dedicate his time to his lifelong love of writing. His interests include well-conducted research, reading Nordic Noir and listening to movie soundtracks as he writes.
My first novel with a Finnish setting. LOVE the atmosphere, the frigid dark winter of Helsinki!
A woman's body in manga doll costume washed up near Aurinkolahti beach. The medical examiner found a marking on her arm that could point to something sinister. Jessica Niemi, investigator of Helsinki police delves into the homicide case while tries to locate two missing Instagram influencers. This is a classic detective story and social media investigation.
Jessica is a flawed individual who's been through so much as a minor. Her family died in an auto accident. Jessica appears to hear things from the beyond. Office politics also plays a role in her mental being as her new boss isn't fond of her.
The Ice Coven is a story with many Japanese influences, manga dolls, schoolgirl uniforms, and Japanese characters. While I appreciate the police procedural side of the story, the hashtag investigation just doesn't click with me personally. I had thought there would be more witchy things to the story, with "Coven" in the title. We're also reminded more than necessary how wealthy she is from her inheritance and that she's living in a crummy studio as a facade to her real opulent flat. Jessica's background isn't really touched on until about 40% into the novel. This is probably best to read after the first in the series, "The Witch Hunter".
That being said this is a fun thriller and I was wrong with my prediction. I do like it when that happens.
Thank you to Berkley, Max Seeck, and NetGalley for this ARC. Available September 28, 2021.
One trippy book with surprise twists. Nothing like you have ever read. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Max Seeck is a master at unique settings and completely unique plots. I love the fact that this is from a police procedural point of view because it is so much more in depth than similarly written novels in the same genre.
I also love the fact that he puts his stories into the frozen cities of Northern Europe. The locations for the reader may be foreign but that just adds the additional layer of atmosphere to every part of the mystery.
This story is somewhat of a continuation which follows a detective with big secrets of her own, and while there are multiple references to past cases, I’m pretty sure a reader could definitely read this as a standalone. Although the first novel, The Witch Hunter, was great too and not one to be missed!
The Ice Coven is incredibly different from any other novel in the police procedural or crime genre. There are multiple twists that you don’t expect, fabulous character development, and many layers built into this murder mystery. I could not stop reading!
Seeker is a fabulous author with a unique imagination. This is one trippy book! Nothing like you have ever read! I will definitely continue to look forward to his novels and twisted crime novels.
The Ice Covem is a highly readable piece of nordic noir, good characters, good mystery and short snappy chapters that really suited the narrative.
I found it quite predictable but enjoyed it none the less but it does follow that thing I've noted a lot in my avid watching of all things chilly- there's inevitably a brilliant detective who is right 99% of the time but who always get sidelined by politics and people trying to edge them out. They aren't believed which drags out the catching of killers by a fair bit. See The Bridge The Killing and various others. It seems to be a thing!
The setting here is chilly and beautifully described and overall this was a good read..
The Ice Coven is the the second instalment in the Detective Inspector Jessica Niemi series which is a compulsive and engrossing work of Scandinavian crime. It features all the best elements of the Scandi noir genre but it remains fresh and interesting, with plot twists that keep you reading long into the night. It's a dark, atmospheric read set in the remote rural countryside surrounded by dense woodland that translates into a unsettling and claustrophobic undertone running the length of the mystery.
There's plenty of intrigue, mystery and a plethora of twists and turns with a wild and chilling plot and all of this never fails to keep you engaged and captivated throughout. Niemi is a larger than life character who is deeply flawed making her relatable and human with strained family relationships and a few skeletons in her closet. I can't wait to see her develop and evolve as a character as we come to know more about her in the instalments to follow. Highly recommended.
I really liked the first book in the Jessica Niemi series, The Witch Hunter. So, I was thrilled to return to Jessica's world in the sequel The Ice Coven. I like that we get to know more about Jessica and also an interesting case. It's a thrilling book and the ending was really good. I do miss Erne, her mentor from the first book.
Now I'm longing to read the next book in the series, The Last Grudge. I do recommend reading the first book in the series. Jessica is such an interesting character with a special past, it's better to get to know her from the start.
The Ice Coven by Max Seeck is book 2 in the Jessica Niemi series, and I loved it just as much as book 1 - The Witch Hunter. While I didn't find this one to be quite as atmospheric or witchy, it was still incredibly creepy and an excellent police procedural. There are a lot of different things going on which makes the plot very complex and interesting, and I was gripped by the entire storyline. Jessica's visions of her mom are an aspect that I really can't get enough of and all I want to know is exactly what is going on, but of course, Seeck isn't going to let me off that easy. There were a bit fewer of her 'dreams' in this installment, but what there was made me anxious for more and was probably my favorite part of the book. It adds that supernatural/ghosty element that I love having in books, and it definitely mixes things up from the procedural parts of which there are many.
The audiobook is also a great way to go and narrated by Abby Craden. She did not narrate The Witch Hunter, but I thought she did an excellent job, and I would definitely love to see her narrate the other books in this series. I have listened to her before and I always think she does a great job, no matter how many viewpoints there are, and in The Ice Coven there are a lot. This is a bit on the slower side, and I wouldn't call it nonstop action or anything, but at the same time, I think the pace was pretty steady throughout and there weren't any parts that felt unnecessary to me. I have been trying to read more Nordic Noir, and I think if you love that type of crime fiction along with police procedurals, this series is a great choice. The Ice Coven performed well as a standalone, but I have to say I think it is a good idea to read in order simply for the character backstory for Jessica. I wish I could read the next book immediately, and I cannot wait to see more of Jessica and more from Seeck!
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Booooo Alright I didn't LOVE the first book with Neimi, but I didn't think it was a dud like others did. This was a total slog to get through - at best 1.5 stars for SOME moments of interest, but the whole thing was just a massive disappointment. Catty female characters, an case that has too many moving parts to it (and is so uninteresting I didn't want to put the effort into keeping track), absolutely nothing to do with the first book (or its loose ends) and a lot of moments where this book just talked down to the audience.
1. There's nothing even remotely related to an "Ice Coven" in this book. It's nothing like the first one, where there actually was a coven that at least had witchy vibes. This is a whole different case - it should have just been called something else!
2. All the women in this book are SO PETTY. The new police chief hates Jessica because ??? She does I guess. Nina hates Jessica now because ??? she slept with literally cult member Mikeal (which was this even a thing in the first book? I feel like it was added just to isolate Jessica more) and now literally fantasizes about Jessica dying. All their interactions are so tedious and CATTY it was awful to get through
3. The case is boring. There are a lot of leaps made by the team concerning what is connected with each other, and they end up being right most of the time! With the exception of a final TWO twists (which weren't really that shocking, nor did I care at that point), anything that Yusuf, Rasse, or Jessica randomly thinks of, no matter how much of a stretch, tends to be right. Just random shit! With the most basic of similarities! It made me disinterested in the case quickly, so once they added so many extra layers, I just hated it more bc the book expected me to invest in something I didn't care about
4. A lot of the technological aspects of the story were explained in a way that you would use with a toddler. People know what Instagram is. They know about metadata, the WayBack Machine, even GPS tracking. I'm not an expert, but it felt insulting
Major Disappointment imo - I liked the characters at the end of the first book, and was excited to see how they would develop along with the coven plot. This was just a waste unfortunately.
Dazu kommen wirklich gut ausgebaute Figuren ins Spiel.
Max Seeckin jännittävä dekkari Pahan verkko jatkaa Uskollisen lukijan tarinaa, jonka pääosassa toimii rikosylikonstaapeli Jessica Niemi.
Jessica on todella mielenkiintoinen rikosylikonstaapeli. Tosin hänen miesmakunsa on surkea.
Pahan verkko kutoi rikollisen verkkonsa salaperäisesti nettiavaruuteen. Tykkäsin tosi paljon tästä nykyaikaan ja somemaailmaan tiukasti sijoittuvasta dekkarista.
Max Seeck is the Finnish author who made a striking entry into the Nordic crime fiction's hall of fame with his novel, The Witch Hunter, a thriller featuring an intricate plotline mingling elements from both horror fiction and the police procedural subgenre. The protagonist, hardboiled female investigator Jessica Niemi, won the readership's sympathy for her special way of approaching the case in hand and her faceoff with a wicked satanic occult satisfied even the most demanding fans of the genre. In this book, Seeck chose to divulge sufficient background information regarding Jessica's past and the interjected chapters, narrating her adventure in Italy in the company of a nasty man named Colombano, further embellished her characterization.
The Ice Coven by Max Seeck is the second in the Detective Jessica Niemi series.
Series Background: (Warning – Contains spoilers from previous books) Detective Jessica Niemi has suffered a lot of loss in her life. She was the only survivor of a car crash when she was six. Her parents and brother died in that crash. Then she lost her foster parents. Recently her boss/mentor and father figure, Erne Mikson, passed away from cancer. She is still having nightmares about her mother, and the coven of witches from the last case. She is a very private person, and only Erne was aware of how wealthy she really is. Jessica works for the Helsinki Violent Crimes Unit of the Police Department. Her new boss is Superintendent Helena Lappi, and Jessica is having a few problems with her (who they secretly call "Hellu"). The rest of her team includes Yusuf Pepple, Rasmus Susikoski, and Nina Ruska. Nina and Jessica don't get along too well either, since she slept with Nina's boyfriend Mikael, who ended up being a bad guy anyways.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) A woman's body washes up on the shore of Finland, and at first Jessica and the team think it may be the missing woman they have been looking for. However, they soon determine that Lisa Yamamoto is still missing, as is her friend Jason Nervander.
Lisa and Jason are both social medical celebrities and lifestyle bloggers, and some think they may have disappeared as a publicity stunt.
But as the team investigates the last party they attended, and speak with Lisa's roommate and eventually her father, it becomes clear that this is a much bigger issue than originally thought. Now the team is looking into prostitute rings, and drugs, and human trafficking.
Meanwhile, Jessica's new boss has discovered some damning details about Jessica's past, and it looks like it may be career-ending.
My Opinions: First, I have no idea where the title came from. I loved that title, and was really disappointed that it seemed to have nothing to do with the book.
Second, this book is long, and part of my problem is with the unfamiliar people and place names. Between the Japanese and Finish names, I was stumbling along. But that's okay -- it's my problem, not the the authors'.
However, the actual plot was really good, and as with the first book, clues were given sparingly, so you had to pay attention. I had guessed the perpetrator early on, but dismissed the idea just as quickly. There were a number of twists and red herrings, and after a rather slow start, the pace picked up.
So, overall, the book was good, and I will hang around for the next book in the series.

The Story: Six months after Jessica's encounter with a serial-killing coven of witches, Jessica and her team from the Violent Crimes Unit is now assigned to investigate the missing persons case of Finland's well-known social media celebrities and lifestyle bloggers - Lisa Yamamoto and Jason Nervander. It seems to be a straight forward case at first, but when the body of a woman is found near Aurinkolathi, this case has turned into a clear homicide.
My thoughts: This second installment of this series was definitely darker, grittier, with a pretzel-twisty, brilliant plot! Oh my goodness. I just have to say that I enjoyed this one more than the first book!
There are so much depth to the characters! I love love love Jessica and her team! Their work dynamics, relationships and conflicts were well-written. It was really interesting to see how their new leader Helena Lappi is trying to manage this team. Jessica reminds me so much of Harry Hole - an excellent cop with a bad ass attitude! I took an instant liking to her!
I am not going to give away too much of the plot except that it was so original, unique and social media is the driving force of the entire story.
While this book can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend reading the first book first for all the backstories which will help in understanding these characters in a deeper way.
Overall, this was a fantastic police procedural that will keep you at the edge of your seat! It is perfect for the spooky season as there was a dash of paranormal in the story too!

***Thank you Berkley Publishing Group, author Max Seeck and NetGalley for this gifted copy to read and review. All opinions expressed are my own.***
This is the second in the series and I enjoyed it just as much as the first. It was spooky and atmospheric and I love a good police procedural.
A young woman's body washes up on an icy beach. At the same time, two famous Instagram influencers have gone missing. Investigator from the violent crimes unit, Jessica Niemi, is tasked with her team to find out what happened and a search starts involving the missing people.
So many pieces of information come together in this one, like a giant puzzle and while I found parts confusing, I got back on track soon enough. We also see the mystery surrounding Jessica and her protecting the secret from her past, from everyone except Erne. While this one was a slower pace for me, I loved the development of the characters and the setting the author created to provide a very spooky mystery.
Thanks so much to Allen & Unwin for the gifted advance review copy.
Egyedül Rassét, a csődtömeg informatikust bírtam.
In 2020, I was privileged to read a pre-release copy of the first book in this series, The Witch Hunter. So when I had a chance to request a copy of this one, the second in the series, my response in the affirmative was a no-brainer. Now that I've finished it, count me in for the next one.
In the previous book, Violent Crimes investigator Jessica Neimi lost her police department boss, mentor and lover, Erne; now, she must deal with a new and far less friendly supervisor nicknamed Hallu. After a night of partying with a famous singer, a popular blogger named Lisa Yammamoto and her friend Jason Nervander go missing. Jessica, her colleague Yusef and the rest of the team are assigned the case with few clues to go on. Then, police find another woman's body on a beach near a lighthouse; who she is isn't known (except that she's not the missing Lisa), but she's wearing a schoolgirl uniform resembling a Manga character even though she's well beyond school age. Also suspicious is a ring of round marks on her arm that suggest some kind of torture.
As if trying to find the missing duo and a murderer now dubbed the "Phantom," Jessica must deal with her past and a big secret she's been keeping from everyone except Erne. Her supervisor would like nothing more than to discredit her (with an ultimate goal of getting her off the force one way or another). Jessica is still mourning the loss of Erne. Forge on she must, but the only clues point to a rare kind of poison used in "kambo" ceremonies and the aforementioned schoolgirl costumes.
There are some twists as the investigation moves along, and I'll be honest in saying that things got a bit confusing in spots (one character, for instance, was found dead in one chapter by another character and bit the dust again several chapters later, found by a different character). But that aside, it was an adventure I enjoyed very much, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy.
