I just finished reading Why Not Me! and it was so good that I feel the need to share my thoughts with others. This is a book of the real-life struggles of Doug Pollock told in the first person. Reading about the life experiences that Doug has gone through with drugs, alcohol and relationships are very real and the way Doug tells his story has you hanging with every page. As you read his story, you can tell that Doug is a great person at heart and you cannot help but feel a bond as Doug goes through the ups and downs in each chapter of his life. This book has you living through his life in a series of poor decisions, misfortune and bad relationships that eventually result in a 20-year prison sentence. In prison, Doug is determined to make the most of his time. He had the determination to change his ways and doing so found faith in God that helped him to make positive life choices that helped him recover from his addictions and the poor choices that kept him down through his prior life. Life outside of prison keeps you rooting for him as fights to stay away from his prior lifestyle, excels in his work and his faith in God becomes stronger. Doug then meets his true love and you can't help but smile as you can tell these two were meant to be together. This book is a true success story that makes you realize it is possible to recover from the lowest points with dedication, commitment, faith and love.

Doug Pollock’s dynamic testimony of redemption takes you from the ash heap to the mountaintop. My favorite theme was the victim versus victor mindset. The journey from victimhood to taking responsibility for the things that happened to striving to improve oneself to finding the power of regeneration in Jesus Christ is real and engaging. It’s a journey many Christians take in one way or other. I know I did.
.
My favorite part of the story was his romance and marriage to Kristin. So funny, so heartwarming, so relatable! More pirouettes, please! Ha!
.
This book is more biography than memoir as it covers Doug’s life story as a whole, but the way it is written prevents you from feeling bogged down in the miry details, which are an important part of the story and able to offer hope to anyone who feels the cards they were dealt have doomed them to the darker side of life.
.
I kept turning pages to find out where God would take Doug next, more than once staying up past my bedtime. Whether you are lost, looking for hope, in recovery, or just dealing with your own demons and wounds, this book is a challenging, uplifting read.

One thing I love about reading is that I get glimpses into other lives. Sometimes they are fictional, and sometimes they are stranger than fiction. This memoir is the latter; it’s a raw and an authentic look at a life that was almost wasted.

This book details how one man went from the gates of hell to being redeemed by our gracious God.

“Why Not Me!” is a great reminder to never give up on people. You never know when God will shake them up, and bring them to repentance.
