Sibert Medalist and naturalist Nic Bishop explores the world’s largest land animal -- the ELEPHANT! Few animals are more impressive than elephants. They are by far the biggest of all land animals. And yet, elephants are more than mighty. They are sensitive and intelligent creatures who live in large, caring family societies run by females. They have extraordinary senses and communicate in complex ways that scientists are only now starting to understand. Elephants play an essential role in the delicate African and Asian ecosystems. Today, elephant populations in both Africa and Asia are being threatened. Join award-winning author, photographer, and naturalist Nic Bishop as he gives readers an in-depth look at one of the world's smartest and most fascinating animals.
46 pgs. This is a spectacular book on elephants. You will learn so many facts and enjoy the stunning photos. The only thing I was disappointed in was a comparison picture page of all the elephant types. It has a chapter on that, but does not feature each one so we can compare as a reader. Otherwise the book is great for reports and pleasure reading on animals. Be sure to read the captions next to each photo for additional information. At the end of the book is a real story section from the author about some encounters he had with elephants that will inspire you. Great book and information that kids will enjoy. Highly recommended for Grades 3-5.
Photographer and author Nic Bishop introduces readers to different types of elephants, their traits, abilities, and common activities. There's a note in the back of the book about the challenges of photographing elephants in the wild.
An excellent guide to elephants for middle grade readers. Bishop's excellent photographs bring these animals to life and complement the text well. An excellent choice for middle graders studying elephants, are elephant enthusiasts, are curious readers, or are just general animal lovers.
Excellent, informative book on elephants. The pictures are exquisite and so fun to look at. And the information is super fantastic…it entertained my 2nd-6th graders well. It’s a longer read aloud book, but the reading level is probably around the 3rd grade level. I read it aloud in one sitting and it took me 20-25mins…and I enjoyed learning more about elephants along with my kids!
Nic Bishop takes his considerable talent as a photographer to investigate the world's largest land animal. As with his other works, the stunning photographs stand out for their clarity and focus. The text provides a great commentary as Bishop shares the attributes that make elephants so remarkable. In addition to their size and strength, elephants also exhibit characteristics of intelligence and family devotion. The book covers topics related to the types of elephants, herd life, growing up and communication as well as the physical features that make elephants so formidable. The amazing photographs are wonderfully complemented by the large, easy-to-read text. I always enjoy studying the photographs in a Nic Bishop book. They are phenomenal (and yes I know I'm gushing). From pictures of baby elephants peaking out between its mother's legs or sucking its' trunk to a group of elephants communicating using their trunks to a picture of one of the world's largest elephants, the photographs do a great job of taking readers into the world of the elephant. The author's note at the end of the book is a fascinating glimpse into the work required to create the book. Highly recommended.
