Justin D. Hill has carved himself a niche in 40K fiction as a (*the?) chronicler of the fall of Cadia through his Lesk novels. This is a nice reflective piece, looking once more at the psychological consequences of their ‘failure’ and chronologically falls at some point during his novel ‘Cadia Stands’. It’s as well-written as we’ve come to expect from Hill and is absolutely worth the readers time, even as a stand-alone piece.

A short story covering Minka Lesk’s experiences directly after the battle for Cadia. Hill never shies away from depicting the visceral horror of war, but in this story he gives us the mental suffering too. We see Minka’s terrible dreams, as she tries to come to terms with the events of the battle, her mental suffering much greater than her physical injuries, and yet the story ends on a note of hope.
