What happens when an Academy dropout joins a mercenary company? Catastrophe! Anarchy! Moral Disintegration! In short you have quite the mess. But for Kaylin, that is just another day in the life as she and her crew fight and plunder under the shadows of Ziammotienth. The young wizard has found a place among the rough and tumble sell-swords and adventurers. But deep down, she fears the secrets within and beneath are calling her deeper than she imagined. But before she can even dream of plunging back in there are debts to be paid, alliances to be forged, and secrets to be rooted out. And that doesn't even cover the fact Kaylin still has much to learn. But pressure makes diamonds, and the beating hammer brings forth shining steel. Can Kaylin survive the process? When monsters abound, from the shrieking harpy to the slithering basilisk, nothing is for certain except the barbaric peoples of Ziammotienth have something to say. Yet, this is the road she chose, and every step she takes is one of freedom and purpose, defiance and destiny. Nothing in life is certain, but that has never stopped Kaylin before, and it certainly won't stop her now.
Our girl Kaylen has many adventures both with and without her mercenary company the Dragon Claws. Her newest bestie, the hobgoblin Rahl, is a huge help as is her miniature dragon, Wivre. The Company Captain Crozier (a crozier is a shepherd's crook, btw), has taken too many contracts and is driving the company to complete them before time runs out. Unfortunately, the humans have pissed off too many humanoids and the entire ruined city has risen up against the residents of Last Rest. How will they pull their bacon out of the fire this time? It takes a little imagination and a lot of cooperation, but they get the job done. The style of magic in this series is unique. I really enjoy it! The rarest of all ratings: 10/10 unicorns 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
I want to like our heroine. I really do. But she seems to lack any kind of common sense and I lost count of the times she froze, or hesitated, or paused, or stopped to stare, or whatever. And this is during battle or another life-threatening situation.
Seriously? Our most-excellent thief who could pretty much assess and react to situations both decisively and very quickly suddenly develops a condition where she cannot process anything without standing still?
I don’t get it. I really don’t.
And then there’s her focus on pretty much one type of magic. While then author wants us to believe some pretty sparkling lights equal a good fireball, well count me unconvinced.
Enjoyed this book, a really fun fantasy. Kaylin Knight, a mage school drop out, joins a band of mercenaries. No simple memorizing of spells for this mage. She learns to create new ones, something that trained mages don't do, all without realizing how unique she is. Very good descriptions, characters grow, actions abound and the story never falters. She learns actions have consequences and enemies can become friends. Lots of magic and monsters
I love this series, it has all the storylines if great D&D without the dice roll. Kaylin is working with the Claws to fill their contracts and at the same time she is trying to find more books and scrolls to help with her magic. She is making friends and coming to see the Rest as her home. I can't wait to read more books in this series for more adventures of Kaylin and the Claws.
Dang,. Loved this book, sadness having to wait for the next one
In the feeling of old fantasy stories the hero comes from a poor sad life finds unknown talents and gifts then rises to aid on conquest and battles with battle and some very slight humor and well done narratives this was a fast and fun read and fast only because it was so enjoyable
This is typical of Michael Anderle. It starts with the first page. The next thing you know is you're neck deep in the story, inside this world and the characters and their lives...and you want more...no, you need more. This is what a master story teller does and he does it superbly well!
Looking forward to the third book. You have created some strong characters and ideas for the story. I will be reading book three when it is released. Thanks for the hard work of publishing your story.
Another great book by Michael! It is nonstop action and the storylines are amazing. The magic is unique and the lead characters are wonderful and will have you cheering them on.
