Two people get a second chance at love in this heartwarming story by author Nancy Naigle, The Wedding Ranch…
When Lorri Walker’s husband gifted her with a mastiff puppy on Valentine’s Day, she believed he was recommitting himself to their marriage after going astray. Six months later, he left both her and their dog for someone else. Since her recent move to Dalton Mill to unbraid herself from the past, Lorri’s graphic design business is now flourishing, her growing mastiff, Mister, has plenty of space to romp, and her ex in Raleigh can fade to a distant memory.
Ryder Bolt is haunted by the tragic loss of his wife and young son seven years ago. Thankfully, ranching keeps Ryder busy, and spending time with his niece and nephew—whose venue, The Wedding Ranch, has become a popular tourist destination—keeps him from getting lonely.
When Lorri and Ryder met, love was the last thing they were looking for. When they’re together, smiles come easier and burdens feel lighter, and both are embracing the possibility of something deeper.
But when a long-buried revelation surfaces, the fate that brought them together threatens to tear them apart.

The Wedding Ranch by Nancy Naigle Contemporary romance. Slow build and closed door. Lorri moves to a new subdivision after her divorce is final. It’s on five acres and perfect for working from home, farmers markets, county fairs and her huge mastiff dog, Mister. Ryder is unhappy with his parents decision to sell parts of the farmland. Meeting Lorri has him thinking maybe it’s not such a bad thing. The two don’t want a relationship. They get to know each other slowly and overcome obstacles as they come up.
An emotional story of love, lose and rebuilding. Sweet and charming.
🎧 I read this book first and then did a second reading by audiobook. The performance was nicely done by Lisa Larson. The tone and cadence is exactly as a soft and emotional romance should be. There are specific voices for the two main characters and changing from one to the other is smooth. Both reading and listening were pleasant and romantic. I think I preferred the audiobook just a smidge better for getting to know each character and what was in their hearts.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley and St Martins Griffin and Dreamscape Media.
I loved writing this book. I hope you'll mark 12/6/2022 on your calendar, and preorder it so you'll be one of the first to get it upon release.
There are some familiar characters from a few other books popping up at one of the big events at The Wedding Ranch too. I hope you recognize them. Don't worry though, I'll be leaving a little trail of fun ways for you to connect with the story between now and release time.
Haven't read any of my novels before? Well, don't hesitate to download my novel list from my website www.NancyNaigle.com. There's something for everyone.
This is a Cowboy Small Town Romance. This book is very slow to get going, and it also took me a while to connect to the characters. I almost DNF this book, but I am glad I kept going. Once, I was pulled into the story I really enjoyed it. There was a big twist in this book that I did see coming, but I still loved how it was handled. I really love the dog in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Griffin) or author (Nancy Naigle) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
I love a small-town romance and this novel was that and more! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this heart-warming second chance, friends to lovers’ romance!!
Two people with emotional scars trying to leave their past behind and begin again. Neither wants a relationship, but the attraction between them is too strong to deny!
🎧The Narrator, Lisa Larson, did a fantastic job. The voice transition between the two MC was very smooth and the softness of her voice seemed to go along with this story perfectly.
I highly recommend this to anyone that is a Hallmark movie fan. I can see this playing out on the TV screen easily. Oh, and did I mention that a 180-pound cuddly mastiff dog named Mister steals the show!!
For Lorri Walker, married bliss was a myth. Lorri wasn’t miserable in her marriage, but it wasn’t fun and games either. Her marriage to Craig was bordering on mundane. Until one day Craig brings home a mastiff puppy as an offer to repair their relationship. It worked for a while until Craig leaves Lorri for their puppy trainer.
Hoping to start anew, Lorri moves from bustling Raleigh to farm country, Dalton Mill. It was a stark contrast to what Lorri was used to. But it was what Lorri felt she needed — a new home on five acres for her pet mastiff, Mister, to run around in.
It didn’t take Lorri that long to enjoy what country style living had to offer. Friendly neighbors, farm fresh produce, and quiet. Lorri still needed to experience the county fair, though. And she vowed to experience it after her neighbor, Tinsley invited her.
Lorri mapped out her plan of attack at the fair. She wanted to experience everything that the fair had to offer — from the 4H competitions, craft and baking booths, and even cotton candy. Lorri was so engrossed in the activities around her that she failed to realize that a steer got loose and was headed straight for her. Luckily, Lorri was tackled to safety by her savior Ryder Bolt. And that tackle would be the best thing that ever happened to her.
The Wedding Ranch is a wholesome romance novel that is so refreshing. It’s faith based so it doesn’t have any steam or heat that would make it borderline erotic.
The narrative unfolds in the third person point of view and it’s fitting for the storyline. I loved how each character is revealed as the narrative progresses. Granted Lorri and Ryder were my favorite characters, but the minor players were just as good.
The plot is a strangers to lovers romance and like any good romance novel, there is the element of suspense — when will the two subjects realize they were MFEO, and what will it take for them to realize that? The Wedding Ranch is deserving of five outstanding stars.
I received a digital ARC from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
This is a really sweet story of two unlikely people who get to know each other. Both are hurting from the past and just are not ready for a relationship beyond friendship. In a lot of ways, I saw what was going to happen and knew trouble was ahead, but it didn't take away from my investment in their story. The author did a nice job of working things out. This is a great story of forgiveness and moving on beyond past hurts, intertwined with a faith thread and really likable main and secondary characters, set in a lovely background. The ending brought a happy smile to my face. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley. All thoughts are mine only.
This book is a feel good story with all the feels. It was like reading an emotional roller coaster. Sadness, happiness, excitement are just some of the emotions I felt while reading this book. The story of Lorri and Ryder is one you will want to read. Lorri is recently divorced and Ryder lost his family in a tragic accident. This is a great small town romance that will keep you reading until the end.
This audiobook was provide to me by NetGalley and Dreamscape. Thank you.
Sometimes I’m just in the mood for a super sweet and heartwarming read and when that mood strikes I know I can turn to Nancy Naigle. Her books are sugary sweet and innocent, the type of wholesome book you could let your Grandma borrow and not worry about if you know what I mean 😉 Was this a little cheesy? Yes. Was it predictable beyond the usual romance manner? Absolutely. Did I really care that much? Nope because I knew it would be before I even started it and it was kind of like putting on your favorite cozy sweater and knowing it’ll keep you warm all day. So cheesy but true! So if you want a pure little romance that will still somehow melt your heart try this it was pretty fun.
For me the start of this book was very slow. I couldn’t get attached to the characters and the conversations felt forced. I don’t understand how the MC forgave her husband after he admitted repeatedly cheating on her and didn’t even change his behavior afterwards, he just gave her a puppy and all their troubles went away. But admittedly this is probably more a personal opinion because both my fiancé and I have always been of the same mindset that physical or emotionally cheating is 100% a dealbreaker. ⠀ This book was unexpectedly serious and sad. But somewhere in the middle it got good, and I did end up getting attached to the characters. I loved the small town romance. ⠀ I saw the plot twist coming because there were a lot of twists, but I still enjoyed it. This friends to lovers romance was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. If you don’t mind some serious themes this is definitely worth the read.
This was such a wholesome romance, truly. There were some small bumps in the road but overall they worked through their issues and found a way into each other’s hearts. The setting was also very beautiful as well.
🌀Synopsis Lorri’s husband cheated on her…more than once. He decided to buy her a puppy and take it to training so he could get to know the trainer. Then he asked her for a divorce. So, she moved. She found a place in the country where she gets to work remotely and have a small piece of property. Ryder lost his wife and son in a tragic accident. He finds though, that he is willing to open up again. When he and Lorri have an encounter at the fair he is excited to get to know her. She’s excited as well until she realizes her brother was the other person in the accident. Now they must both find a place of forgiveness in order to be able to move forward.
I loved this book and had fun reading it! From the start, the character’s antics had me chuckling (and sometimes rolling my eyes) in a good way. This truly was a nice and heartwarming story and I look forward to reading more Nancy Naigle books! I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Thank you so much!
What a great gift to us from Naigle this December. A great story of love and forgiveness. I love women's fiction that makes you feel good. It is a must read and I Highly recommend this 4-star read. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
An entertaining second chance/life after divorce romance between a middle aged divorcee and a widower. I thought the mastiff pet stole the show in this cowboy, dual POV romance. Overall just an okay read that was good on audio but didn't do much for me if I'm completely honest. Much thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an early digital copy and a physical ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The Wedding Ranch ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction Format: Kindle eBook Date Published: 12/6/22 Author: Nancy Naigle Publisher: St. Martin’s Press Pages: 352 Goodreads Rating: 4.21
I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
Synopsis: Two people get a second chance at love. Our main characters Lori and Ryder come from heavy past trauma and are looking for a way to move on. Lori moves from a big city to a small town for quiet living, to start over. Ryder lives in this small town and runs a business. How can they move forward in their lives. Can they forge a friendship, or maybe more?
My Thoughts: This absolutely reminded me of a Hallmark Christmas Movie, which by the way, I absolutely adore. This is a first time author for me, but will not be the last time, I will be going through her backlog to add books to my TBR. Ryder is a country man and has suffered a terrible tragedy. Lori suffered devastating heartbreak. How they met is so sweet and enduring. After the chance meet, they decided to build a friendship, I do not want to give any more as I do not want to spoil for other readers. The characters are well developed, have layers of depth to them, are creative, have an instant connection, are likable, are relatable, and the supporting characters are well done, as well, really contributes to the story. The author’s writing style is complex, invoking, captivating, emotional, and brilliant. The description of the scenes, of the characters is so amazingly done that you felt like you were right there with the characters, envisioning what they are going through. The plot is well built and this has a fantastic ending. I highly recommend picking up this story of redemption, forgiveness, love, and hope that comes out later this year!
Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒ The Wedding Ranch by Nancy Naigle is a wholesome romance set in a small town featuring a large Mastiff dog!
Story Recap: Lorri Walker thought her husband was trying to save her marriage when he gave her a Mastiff puppy for Valentine's day. Six months later, he left her, and the dog for good. Lorri decides to move out of Raliegh and move to the rural suburb of Dalton Mills and finds a home with a big yard for her dog, Mister.
Ryder Bolt has lived in Dalton Mills his entire life, and he’s not happy about the housing development that was built on land that should have been his. Still grieving after the death of his wife and young son, seven years ago, Ryder tries to keep busy with his ranch and helping his twin niece and nephew with their wedding event business at The Wedding Ranch.
Neither Ryder nor Lorri want a relationship, but as they spend more time together, their friendship becomes more. But, can their past show up and change their future?
My Thoughts: I love a good small town romance, and The Wedding Ranch was all that and more! I love a romance when both characters don’t want a relationship but just can’t help themselves as the attraction is so strong, and The Wedding Ranch is a perfect example.
I liked that Lorri wanted to move out of the city and live in a rural suburb, especially as she has such a big dog. She definitely enjoys the small town vibe and makes the most of moving to a small town.
I loved this heartwarming sweet romance. The characters were well developed and I liked them both very much. It was clear they were meant to be together from the start. But, they each had a considerable amount of baggage and I loved seeing how they each were able to unload it.
Recommendation: I highly recommend The Wedding Ranch to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Wedding Ranch written by Nancy Naigle, is a wonderful Women’s Fiction Novel that had me on a roller coaster of emotions. Tears and laughter. Lorri and Ryder are both looking to move forward with their lives. Both have a lot of baggage dragging them down. How does a person find forgiveness not only for others but themselves as well. Heartwarming story with some familiar characters you don’t want to miss. A story of learning how to forgive and love again.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book.

Ryder Bolt is haunted by the loss of his wife and young son seven years ago. Thankfully, ranching and spending time with his family keeps him busy. The Wedding Ranch, owned by his niece and nephew, is a destination for celebrations. When Lorri and Ryder met, they weren't looking for love. But, love found them. Can their new relationship survive unknown information revealed about a past event that has shaped both of them? This was a very intense emotional contemporary romance about forgiveness and the way our pasts affect our futures. Both Rider and Lori have unresolved issues. When they met, they were broken. Love and forgiveness helped them see the new future that lies ahead for them. I love this story because it made me think of my own family and loved ones. The characters and setting were endearing. I wonder if this story is part of a series, because I would love to see what happens next with these characters. I recommend this to anyone who loves a good romance. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this advanced reader's copy. This review is my unbiased opinion.
Audiobook (narrated by Lisa Larsen) I really enjoyed this sweet romance. The quick friendship and the slow bloom of love felt just right. I did guess what would be the final conflict very early in the story but that didn’t spoil it. In fact, the anticipation made me even more anxious to reach the reveal. (I did think a lot about the movie, Return to Me. Different situation but definitely the same vibe.)
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Loved it. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed others so much more. 1🌟 = I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
Name of Book: The Wedding Ranch Author: Nancy Naigle Publisher: St. Martin’s Press ~ Griffin Genre: Chick LIt Pub Date: December 6, 2022 My Rating: 3.5 rounded up Stars!
Lorri Walker’s husband Craig leaves her after fifteen years of marriage for someone younger. Lorri and her dog ‘Mister’ move to a newly developed area as she needs a new start. She meets Ryder a rancher, who is having a hard time dealing with the death of his wife and son who were killed by a drunk driver. Plus there is also bitter over the property his father sold to the developer that Lorri’s house sits on. Hmmm will these two have a second chance of love?
Okay this Hallmark story is predictable ~ however if it weren’t, I would have thrown the book across the room. Sometimes it is nice to read a story and end it with a smile on my face. In the “About the Author’ we learn that Nancy Naigle likes to write small town love stories with a dash of suspense and a lot of heart. Awww nothing wrong with THAT! She has written two Christmas stories Christmas Joy and Hope at Christmas that have been turned into films for the Hallmark Channel. So calling this a Hallmark story is a positive!!
Want to thank NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press ~ Griffin for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for December 6, 2022
Such a good read! This book had me hooked from the first line, I finished it in a day because I just couldn’t put it down. It is one of those books that is just a feel good read and perfect for those days where that’s what you need. Lorri and Ryder are such cute characters . I look forward to reading more books by Nancy!!
Although the beginning of this was sweet, with eventual ex-husband Craig giving Lorri the mastiff puppy, which they name Mister, it also failed to engage me as much as I expected. I'm going to blame that on myself, however, as I was trying out a program that reads the book to me rather than reading myself, not like audio versions, so I may have been more focused on that aspect than the actual story itself, bad me. In any case, Mister is a loyal, lovable hit and I liked Lorri, but considered Craig a selfish jerk. Lorri's friends, aside from the "foot-in-her-mouth" Stacy were also likable thought I didn't feel we intially got to know them well. Again, may have just been the format as I didn't give that up until later. Ryder on the surface initially seems the typical cowboy type, reticent, lover of the land, and shunning "having fun" as his friends urge after the death of his wife and child some years ago. Seven, he would remind you quickly. That quick response is evidence of the depth of the pain remaining.
Given the title of the book, I was expecting the ranch to be a more prominent part of the story, especially after its introduction by owner/managers Ross and Reese. Ryder is their only backer, it's a family thing, and they're excited to have gotten a request from a country music star and prominent photographer to host their wedding events. Ryder, again, the loner cowboy sort, opts to camp out after agreeing to allow them to use his home for the couple. Don't get me wrong, the ranch doesn't just vanish from the story but it isn't really as important a part of the plot as I'd expected, either, aside from the symbolic images the title conjures up.
Ryder and Lorri, of course, do eventually meet after we're treated to their individual stories in alternating sections. I'm not sure I'd call Ryder rescuing Lorri from a cranky steer at the fair a "meet cute" but it served its purpose. I definitely liked that it also didn't instigate an immediate, hot relationship. They approach their friendship slowly, both cautious of being hurt again, and it rang more true than most "meet cute" couples' meetings.
I won't detail the plot further as part of the fun is simply being that proverbial fly-on-the-wall as you watch these two wary people slowly open up to each other as they find out they have more in common than not. Oh, and Mister, the huge mastiff puppy (think it said he'd weigh in at about 180 lbs) certainly has a role to play. If you're a Hallmark fan, you'll love this one. It's an easy read, with characters with depth, surrounded by likable friends and family, with twists and turns on the road to happiness. Definitely worth a read.
Thanks #NetGalley and #StMartin'sPress for introducing me to the "Wedding Ranch" characters. Now, true, Mister might be a bit intimidating on first meet but he's a real character, too.
Lorri Walker knew that her marriage wasn't perfect, but when her husband gave her a puppy for Valentine's Day, she thought they were going to try and make it work. Six months later, she and her mastiff, Mister were left behind when he left her for the dog trainer. Lorri knew she needed to make a change and move on, so she moved to Dalton Mill, where she could work from home and start over. It was just going to be for a year, but things change. Lorri meets Ryder Bolt, her neighbour, who is grieving the death of his wife and son, killed by a drunk driver seven years earlier. He helps his niece and nephew run "The Wedding Ranch" which is where he met Lorri. The more time they spend together, the more they care about each other, until Lorri realizes that there is something between them that Ryder will never be able to forgive.
This was a lovely Nancy Naigle romance. The setting of the small town, the farm, and the summer all bring that romance to the forefront. Both Lorri and Ryder are great characters. They are both dealing with some emotional scars, but if they let it, they can heal each other. I liked that they are both artistic and how those talents help them heal. All the characters add to the story and support each other. The addition of Mister, Lorri's mastiff, was great. He is always around adding fun to the story and was also instrumental in Lorri's healing. There is a twist that causes some angst in the story, which I hadn't suspected, but it wasn't surprising either. This is a story of healing, forgiveness, grief, family and above all else, LOVE. I can definitely see this one being made into a Hallmark movie, it would be perfect. If you enjoy a sweet romance, with a delightful cast of characters and a charming dog, then pick up The Wedding Ranch. I did a read/listen with this book and enjoyed the narration by Lisa Larsen. I found it more of a reading of the book, rather than with voices, but it was easy to listen to and I did enjoy both formats.
The Wedding Ranch is a heartfelt, uplifting tale set in the small town of Dalton Mill that takes you into the lives of Ryder Bolt, a young widower still grappling with the loss of his wife and young son and the all-consuming grief that is preventing him from moving on, and Lorri Walker, a newly divorced woman looking forward to starting a new life in a new home with her beloved mastiff, Mister.
The prose is genuine and smooth. The characters are relatable, hesitant, and kind. And the plot is an addictive, alluring mix of friendship, family, life, loss, grief, introspection, support, forgiveness, community, new beginnings, furry friends, and the power of love.
Overall, The Wedding Ranch is another cosy, heartwarming, delightfully enchanting story by Naigle that reminds us to surround ourselves with those we love and to always live life to the fullest.
Thank you to SMP Romance – St. Martin’s Press for gifting me a copy in an exchange for an honest review.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of The Wedding Ranch by Nancy Naigle.
I enjoyed this book, started out slow but had me laughing out loud at times. Wanted to strangle Craig multiple times but Lorri, Ryder and Mister were enjoyable and likable. By the end of the book I was crying my eyes out. Sweet, cute and delightful.
Sometimes, even though bad things happen that may be out of your control, or you cannot understand why they happen, or move past them … grief, forgiveness and healing all have a purpose.
Can definitely see this as a Hallmark movie. Enjoyable book that left me feeling good. Thank you.
After her husband leaves, Lorri and her huge mastiff puppy make a new start in the country. Will she also find a second chance at love with widower Ryder?
This story started out strong, and I really liked this author's writing style... and the information about Lorri's profession piqued my interest. I also enjoyed learning about the wedding ranch venue (hence the title!) owned by Ryder's niece and nephew. Unfortunately, I guessed the revelation mentioned in the book blurb very early on and was extremely disappointed by it. It was just way too coincidental for my tastes. Overall, this was a sweet, "Hallmark" type of story, and I would recommend it for those looking for something light and sweet.
3.5 stars
Location: Dalton Mill, an imaginary suburb outside of Raleigh, North Carolina
I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Nancy Naigle is a very prolific writer! She has written a number of beloved romance novels and series as well as many with a holiday flare! I have especially enjoyed her holiday books, which have been my main exposure to her books. I finally decided it was time to branch out and try some of her other books that weren’t necessarily holiday related. I have loved her holiday books so I figure it was a no brainer to try this one out and I am so glad I did!
I love the cover of this book and it just stood out to me as something I would enjoy! I have been knee deep in reading murder mystery thrillers and I think it was time for me to take a break and change things up a bit with something more lighthearted with some romance. I read this one pretty quickly so if you are looking for something to change up your reading this holiday season—-this would be a great option for you—-plus it has a sweet mastiff in it I mean how can you go wrong with dogs?!
Naigle is a proven writer with a large fan following and for good reason! She does a great job bringing her characters to life and telling their stories. Not to mention she is a master at small town romances and stories! I am so glad I picked this book up because it was just what I needed to read right now—something quick, easy, and happy with a guaranteed HEA! If you love small town romances you need to check this one out! It will warm you up on a cold winter night!
Lorri will instantly garner reader sympathy, her husband leaves her and her dog after Lorri thinks things are getting better. Something similar happened to a friend of mine and I instantly felt compassion for this poor character! I mean what an asshole! I think readers will instantly feel connected to her character like I did and start the story excited and eager to see her ultimate HEA come through. I was so excited to read her story and see her and Ryder come together—-especially when neither want a relationship. Their chemistry and connection was really well develop and cultivated throughout the story and I couldn’t have been more pleased when things wrapped up. I think readers and fans of small town romances will find a lot to love in this book.
This romance was more on the wholesome side than the steamy side though. When I say ‘I read romances’ to people, I think they instantly assumed hot and steamy. But in reality the romance genre is so diverse and there are a ton of novels that focus on the actual love part which is exactly what this book does. So if you are looking for a bodice ripper this is probably not it but I found the love story was charming, sweet, and full of emotion. I really enjoyed this one and it was exactly what I needed to read right now. Plus there is even a horseback ride—-I mean come on. So sweet. I simply love small town romances and Naigle is so good at them.
This book reads like a Hallmark movie—-albeit not a holiday one—-but it has that sweet, charming quality about it that Hallmark is known for. So if you are looking for something that will make you feel happy, this is it! Ryder was such a great hero and romantic interest. He has his own personal tragedy but now that he’s met Lorri he cannot deny his feelings for her. I just loved watching them come together in this one so much,. Not to mention the dog, Mister, was a lovely addition to the story. I haven ever been a big dog fan but after reading about Mister I was like ummmm hello can I please get a mastiff? Do not miss this charming addition by Naigle, there are so many things to love about it and I am so glad I read it. I am looking forward not only to her holiday books now but any of her books in general!
This was a sweet, heartwarming story about two hurting people. The story opens with Lorri, whose fifteen-year marriage to Craig is in trouble. But when he brings her an adorable mastiff puppy, she believes things are on the mend. She's blindsided six months later when he leaves her for the puppy trainer. Lorri decides the best thing she can do is move away from the memories and start over, where she can rediscover who she is. So she takes Mister, the dog, and moves to the small town of Dalton Mill. I loved the vivid descriptions of her home, her renewed passion for painting, and the joy she gets from the slower pace.
Ryder is a man buried in grief. His wife and son were killed by a drunk driver seven years earlier. He stays busy working his ranch and spending time with his sister and her family. For him, family is everything, including helping his niece and nephew with their new event venue - The Wedding Ranch. Ryder also feels resentment toward his parents, who sold off some of the family lands to a developer, land that he feels should have been his.
The first few chapters were slow as they covered the breakup of Lorrie's marriage and Ryder's grousing about the land. My interest picked up as Lorrie settled into her new home and adjusted to the slower pace. I loved her decision to go to the county fair and the methodical planning of her schedule so she could see as much as possible. I laughed out loud at her first-timer experience with cotton candy and her fascination with the 4-H show. All the new experiences so consume her mind that she doesn't know she's in the path of a runaway steer until Ryder knocks her out of the way.
Ryder is unexpectedly drawn to Lorrie, and rather than help her up and send her on her way, he offers to show her around the fair until she is fully recovered. They find it incredibly easy to talk to each other, especially once each has assured the other that they aren't looking for a relationship. They agree that a new friend is nothing to sneeze at, so their friendship is formed. Watching them find reasons to spend time together, all in the name of "friendship," was fun.
Ryder finds himself more caught up than usual in Ross and Reece's plans at The Wedding Ranch. When a secret celebrity wedding is booked there, Ryder turns his house over to the wedding party. I loved the closeness between Ryder and the "kids" and his belief in their dream. His willingness to step up and help in any way is sweet. A little drama is attached to the wedding when he jumps to conclusions about Lorrie's presence there, but it is dealt with quickly and realistically.
I liked watching Ryder and Lorrie grow closer. It is clear that their feelings are changing and becoming deeper. Ryder's grief begins to let up a little, and everyone notices that he's smiling and laughing more. My heart broke for him as he told Lorrie about what happened and his feelings of guilt over it. Ryder listens as Lorrie speaks to him about her estrangement from her parents because of her brother's poor decisions and their enabling of him. She's never grieved his death because of her anger. But just as Lorrie is ready to confess her feelings, a devastating discovery threatens to drive them apart. Each must look at their past and decide whether the past or the future is more important. These scenes were both heartbreaking and uplifting, and I ached for both. Of course, love wins out, and I loved seeing them come together.
The epilogue was a terrific wrap-up to the story. I loved their plans and seeing their changes as they moved forward. Ryder's big scene was fantastic and was the perfect ending.
