Return to the epic fantasy realm of Rokugan’s samurai and magic in the collected Legend of the Five Rings novellas, featuring an all-new story of the Lion Clan
Deathseeker by Robert Denton III – a shamed Lion Clan warrior finds a chance for redemption when she discovers a foundling with magical ancestry, whose secrets could change everything.
The Eternal Knot by Marie Brennan – a young monk with a mysterious tattoo must learn to embrace her destiny and become a superhuman hero of the Dragon Clan.
Trail of Shadows by D G Laderoute – the quest for a lost relic leads a team of bold Crab Clan samurai into a dangerous expedition through the monster-haunted depths of Shinomen forest.
Plus, the Legend of Five Rings Halloween tales – a collection of spooky Rokugan stories – never before collected in print.
Full disclosure: I'm one of the authors of this book. Hi! Yes, I rated a book I co-authored. Here's why:
1) "The Eternal Knot" by Marie Brennan is perhaps *the* best of the L5R Great Clan novellas, and it is included in this very tome, along with an extended epilogue, "Pine And Cherry Blossom."
2) "Trail of Shadows" by D. G. Laderoute is one of my favorites among the Great Clan novellas; the protagonist is compelling, my favorite fantasy rat-folks make an appearance, and it features one of my favorite yokai.
3) This book also contains a slew of short fictions, and a short fiction collection in print is something I've wanted to see from L5R for a long time.
4) I sincerely believe my novella "Deathseeker" is my strongest work so far.
The only thing that would make this book even better was if it contained some of the full-color inserts from the previous editions. But hey, it's still a great tome for fans of L5R, and folks who are curious what all the fuss is about. :)
Audiobook. A great collection of stories that serve as an excellent introduction to the world of Rokugon. Surprisingly heartfelt and wonderfully written!
I had already read all the entries in this collection except for the new one: Deathseeker. Not what I expected from a story about the Lion, but I couldn't be more pleased! It touched upon some dark subject matter, but did so eloquently. The author paved a convincing arc in the short time allotted too.
The other two novellas, Trail of Shadows and The Eternal Knot are quiet enjoyable too. As is the collection of short stories, especially the spooky ones!
If anything disappoints me about this collection, it's that Deathseeker didn't get its own cover like the other ones in their discrete releases. I'd love something depicting Shiemi, the titular character!
As for what it is and the price I paid, it was worth it. I just wish that they could stop with the "I was going to kill you while you were sleeping, but I need you to hear my monologue", which also happens in the daidoji shin series. Like, is there really not another way to make your protagonists escape danger? But I liked the ending of the deathseeker. I enjoyed how it gave us a glimpse of that ethical mindset and vision of bushido beyond stereotypes.
I've read this and Volume One for help with running my Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition RPG. It's helped me out with some details on the universe. I'm not sure that these books are any use to people that aren't fans of the RPG.
If you're looking for samurai/Japanese history, these aren't the books for you. Gaming fiction is notoriously fickle.
