WHATEVER WILL BE
I was known for being the girl who fell apart.
Trent Cassini was infamous as the boy with no future.
I only saw him as my brother’s dangerously rebellious best friend.
That didn’t matter because Trent didn’t see me at all.
Now I’ve come home following an unthinkable family tragedy.
While Trent has returned on a mission of personal revenge.
There’s more than one reason to be wary of him.
Yet those reasons disappear with one rough kiss in the moonlight.
As the sudden guardian of my two little nieces, I have far too much at stake.
After all, Trent’s world has always been a volatile one.
Filled with extremes and strewn with heartbreak.
I’ve been playing it safe for so long I’m unsure how to risk my heart.
But it seems the troubled boy I once knew has become a man I’ve underestimated.
And against all odds, we just might belong together.

I have mixed feelings on this one because on one hand, it wasn’t that bad - but on the other, it wasn’t good either. In fact, it was interesting in the first few chapters but suddenly it started going downhill for me hence for my rating.

Safety:
No OM/OW Drama
No cheating
No violence other then what happened to Hero in past and towards The Evil One.
No virgins, though both had many sexual partners in the past & are considered equals in terms to sex kinks.
No HEA. Mostly a HFN with a plan for HEA.
No view of the future.

Must Read

Engagement factor off the charts, Cora weaves a tale of loss, tragedy and a web of intrigue.

The characters were engaging, I was invested from start to finish.

When Gretchen gets the call that her sister is dead she packs up her life and returns home. She’s now guardian to her nieces. But she’s left with more questions than answers. Dealing with her grief while continuing to survive the nightmare she’s left with.

It’s Trent, her brothers best friend that she leans on for support. He’s also returned home, but he’s here for other reasons. Revenge namely. His brother sent him away, his resentment and greed saw Trent live a nightmare he was unable to escape from. Trent’s only goal now is to gain the upper hand and destroy his brother. He wasn’t expecting Gretchen or the adorable little girls to steal his heart.

When the secret surrounding the girl's father emerges it’s an explosive conclusion that will affect them all.

It’s a yes from me.

I AM A MESS! This story has taken me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Truthfully I am not shocked. If you have read this author before then you know this is the norm not the exception.

Trent and Gretchen come from the same small town. Both have experience trauma and loss. The definition of family is seen in a beautiful way. As someone who is blessed in the sibling department, my heart ached for Gretchen. That feeling did not go away as all is revealed.

As blessed as Gretchen was with her siblings, Trent has the opposite. His POS brother has me filled with fury. I will say I was so shocked how this story gets flipped on its ear. I thought, oh good, this is going to be a revenge story but it doesn’t really. Karma rears it head and settles injustices. The true revenge becomes a life well lived.

Ummm the sexy, yummy moments between our Trent and Gretchen are delicious. They have me fanning myself. HOLY HOTNESS can you say panty change?!

You see our couple let life’s disappointments go. They shine in the beauty of their love. Best of all they have sweet young girls who help them remember who they lost and how life goes on. Sob.

Happy Emotional Reading Everyone! XOXO

Gretchen Aaronson may be home to become her nieces new caretaker after tragedy but her brother’s friend, Trent Cassini, shows back up in town too. Both come from troubled families however can they find a little slice of happiness is all the chaos? Set in a small town with a funeral makes for a unique beginning for this romance. Part of the coming home series with a different author adding their book each month. This took a bit to get into for me but I did enjoy the back and forth banter with our main characters. Also, the scenes with Trent and the little girls are adorable. A mix of sweet, sad and revenge rolled into one. This can be read as a stand-alone. Told in dual POV

This book needed to be SO much longer for Trent/Gretchen to even be remotely believable

The fact that the brother left the 4 year old girls unattended??? And they drank whiskey??? And one of them threw up from it???? And NOTHING ever comes of it??? Like I’m not even sure they told him it happened??

They let the girls see their MONSTER of a father on his death bed? Really really odd

No no no no no

Everyone in this book needed therapy that’s all I have to say

This stand alone in the Coming Home Series is one that steals your heart and has you riding a wave of emotions. Trent and Gretchen had a past, he was her brother's best friend and nothing more however eight years forward and the instant they see each other again a connection is formed and the chemistry is sizzling. She is the one thing in life he never realized he needed and he is the safety and love that she has always craved. Two people brought together will ride the waves of passion and drama and ultimately a love that ensures whatever will be. A beautiful love story of two broken people who will have their hearts mended when they least expected it. Can I also say that the twins at times stole the show and the way they called Trent was just heart melting.

Trentcassini!!! OMG how I loved this book!! Every time those little girls would scream out his name I melted. This was another wonderful coming home (but with a tragic twist) story, and in this author's style, we can laugh and cry at the same time, while just begging for the couple to get together already. When personal tragedy has two people feeling vulnerable, but unable to resist the chemistry between them and the sexual sparks that have existed for years...it's a recipe for pure romance heaven. I loved this book!!

These two were different and unexpected. As kids they never spoke but as adults their chemistry was off the charts. A traumatic event brought them together and who knew they would be each other’s rock. They both had some family drama from the past to deal with but one thing they had was each other. They were a great team and they both deserved the happily ever after that they got.

This was so good. It's emotional and angsty like CB is known to produce, small town, "I hate that I'm attracted to you", brother's (old) best friend, small town...tropes that just hit, you know? There's a lot of tension for both Trent and Gretchen as the arrive back in their home town for vastly different reasons. The banter and chemistry were great and I loved how the kids got along with everyone despite their circumstances. I'd recommend this for sure. I volunteered to read and review an early copy of this. All opinions are my own.

Whatever Will Be is a tragically beautiful, poignant story that will break your heart and then fill you with hope, love, and healing. Trent and Gretchen have journeyed from the lowest depths of troubled times in their teen years to their twenties when they are brought back into each other's lives when they both return to the small town they grew up in. Around each other since they were kids due to the fact that Trent is best friends with Gretchen’s brother Danny, they quickly find themselves becoming fixtures in each other’s lives once again after a tragedy rocks their world. While Gretchen never turned his head as a teenager that certainly is NOT the case now. Trent throws Gretchen’s heart, body and soul in a tailspin she never could have predicted when he is there for her and her twin nieces.

Trent is this delicious blend of dirty, sweet and serious. He’s confident and successful and she makes him want things he didn't know he wanted or was missing from his life. He has baggage left over from some trauma during his teenage years. They each offer each other this stability and comfort of a family they’d both long since been longing for. Goodness knows they both deserve all the goodness life has to offer. Gretchen is sweet and caring. She’s selfless and unbelievably sexy. I love the fast paced way they fell for each other. They are adorable and hot. Them together and then them as a couple with the girls is just totally precious. I couldn’t get enough of Trent and Gretchen. This book had it all.

When tragedy strikes her family, Gretchen Aaronson returns to the place she never imagined herself living, ever again... her hometown of Lake Stuart. While dealing with the unexpected loss of her sister, and stepping into the role of guardian to her twin nieces, Gretchen never imagined finding love during this devastating and impossible time in her life...

Trent Cassini's life was changed forever when he was accused of a crime that he didn't commit... by his own brother. So when Trent returns to Lake Stuart, he does so with a major score to settle, but in the process, finds a sense a belonging he never knew existed... with his best friend's little sister...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whatever Will Be was an emotionally deep and often heart wrenching, brother's best friend, romance! Gretchen and Trent wanted nothing to do with each other when they were younger and their lives hadn't yet imploded around them. But with their unexpected reunion, an intense and unlikely attraction immediately flares between them. With Gretchen's life in complete upheaval, and Trent's focus on revenge, a romance between them is nothing if not complicated... and neither of them planned on finding each other during some of their darkest moments...
Gretchen's character really brought the emotion and love to this story. The commitment she shows to her nieces, the love she had for her sister, and the devotion that she shows to those she cares for, it was easy to hope that she would find someone who would cherish her like she deserved. Trent was a self-made man who overcame a nightmare of false imprisonment and losing his birthright, all from the man he called a brother. With his goal of revenge clear in his mind, the last thing he expected was to fall for Gretchen...
This story provided an unexpected torrent of emotional moments, a heartwarming and lovely love story, and a sexy, simmering chemistry. In a town filled with tragedy and betrayals, will Gretchen and Trent beat the odds that are stacked against them, or will the reality of living in Lake Stuart ultimately reflect the tragedy of their past hardships...
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
Ohhh i adored this! Fantastic storyline, bit of angst, fun, sweet, heap of chemistry, bit of sexy times thrown in. All bloody amazing!
At the beginning i thought maybe Gretchen may be a bit of a damsel in distress but she was far from it. She was unexpectedly confident and really funny. I loved her! She gave Trent back as good as he gave and their banter had me chuckling all through.
Trent was seriously yum. To the point and bold but also a really great guy you can't help falling for. It didn't take him long to figure out what he had in Gretch and that made me love him more.
Both had difficult childhoods to overcome but as adults they're both strong and determined not letting their past dictate them.
A tragic accident brings them back together. Trent is best friends with Gretchen's brother Danny and he goes to offer support to him. When he see's Gretchen again for the first time in years the attraction is instant. They didn't really have anything to do with each other as kids but now they're adults the sparks fly. Trent see's this as an unexpected bonus but it's not the main reason he is back in town. He's out for revenge. He's plotted for years and now its time to execute his plan. Of course things are never that easy and his plans become complicated by his relationship with Gretchen and her family. Can he let his plans go in order to make sure Gretchen keeps her family together?
I loved the whole plot. It was heartbreaking at times but also a real overcoming the past story. You root for both of them to succeed and the ending is exactly what you hope for. Unputdownable from the first word i devoured it. I laughed and cried, i got angry and broke my heart and finally i swooned and loved. Just brilliant!
Highly recommend! Its a slightly different take on the brothers best friend trope in that although they knew each other as kids they didn't really have much to do with each other back then which i felt made it fresh.
Whatever Will Be was an enjoyable, fast paced read with wonderful characters. Both Trent and Gretchen were forced to leave their hometown during painful circumstances and tragedy brings Gretchen back while revenge brings Trent home. Neither expect the attraction that draws them together when they come face to face again and they are powerless to resist. When a hidden secret threatens the happiness they have found, will they be able to survive?
“Gretchen Aaronson is proving to be everything I never knew I wanted wrapped into one hot, feisty package.”
Both Trent and Gretchen have painful pasts and both have risen above them. Trent is a self made man who has returned for revenge and to reclaim his birthright. He starts out as blunt and withdrawn, but we soon discover a heart underneath all of his brashness. His fierce protectiveness of those he loves will make you swoon.
“Trent is a source of unpredictable color in my life and I like thinking about him.”
Gretchen has found herself the guardian for her sister’s two little girls. All of her plans for her future have to be reconsidered and she has to forge a new path. Gretchen is outspoken and is not afraid to go after what she wants. She also loves her family and will do anything to care for them.
“Gretchen Aaronson is the answer to a question I didn’t realize I’ve been asking.”
I loved watching the relationship between Trent and Gretchen develop. Their chemistry is blazing hot and their banter was so fun. They were a strong support system for each other and I loved how open and honest their relationship was. They faced obstacles head on and together.
Full of emotion, heart and a bit of suspense, Whatever Will Be will pull at your heart strings.
I absolutely loved this
I loved this book. There was a lot of tragedy in the beginning and at first I wasn’t sure if I would continue, but I’m SO glad that I did.
As I said, this book starts out with a lot of family drama and tragedy, but as I got to know the characters, I fell in love with them and I became fully invested in their story.
The love story between Trent and Gretchen was intense and emotional and beautiful. What started out as almost indifference to each other turned into sizzling chemistry, and evolved into an epic love and dedication to one another—despite the tragedy that surrounded them. Even though there were sad and devastating parts in the beginning, this book was also filled humor and hope. I almost want to say the stars of this book were the twins. They were absolutely hilarious and adorable in every single scene and I loved the instant bond they formed with “Trentcasini” -(I could not get enough of that😉).
This book was so well written that it felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading. It was so easy to picture every scene and the dialogue was so natural. By the end, I had laughed and cried and was left with an overall happiness with how everything fell into place. I would definitely read this again because now I miss these characters lol.
Gretchen has come home after tragedy has struck. She is tasked along with her brother to raise her 4 yr old nieces after her sister passes away. She left her small town and never came back. Trent left his small town by force and is coming back to get revenge against those who wronged him.
Trent is/was the best friend to Gretchen’s brother. They have grown over the years but still touch base every once in a while. Trent is a damaged man based on things that happened when he was forced to leave. And he is out to right some wrongs that were made against him.
These two connect in a way that neither or them expected. There are moments in this book that seem a little out there, but at the same time they work and make sense. There are truths that are found; secrets that come out, and destruction in the wake of these things coming out.
The pacing of this story was a little bit off, and some of the decisions made were frustrating. I am still on the fence on whether or not I truly liked it. The storyline was strong but needed something more. I will give Cora Brent another try because I did like her writing style, and maybe it was just these characters that didn’t work 100% for me.
Disappointing and predictable
Spoilers!
I had such high hopes for this book but it did not deliver. The story was predictable and the writing wasn't great. There was a lot of narrating of the story but not a lot of conversation between the characters. This made it difficult to connect with the characters and really learn who they were.
I could already tell who the father of the twins were going to be before I was even halfway through the book. What I'm surprised about is that no one thought to order a paternity test in this day and age, just to have proof.
I also didn't think it was good form to bring the twins to meet their father while he is at his deathbed. They are four years old! They didn't know they had a father to begin with, just lost their mother, and then their guardians just decide to drop a bomb and say their father was dying and expect them to understand at such a young age? That did not make any sense to me at all. The was brief mention of grief counseling but nothing past that. After the scene at the hospital with their dying father, they will surely need counseling more than ever.
This story is supposed to be part of the "Coming Home" series but it did not bring any warm feelings, which is what home is supposed to do.
Whatever Will Be is a new standalone, brothers best friend romance. This is the first book in the Coming Home Romance Series where one author a month brings you a new standalone story about coming home.
This story was heartbreaking, tragic, a bit predictable, but original. There's vengeance, family drama, humor, some steamy scenes, and sweet moments too. There are realistic aspects and subjects such as abuse, anxiety, panic attacks, ETC.
Trent and Gretchen had a lot in common. Hurt by the people that should love them the most. Gretchen was the complete opposite of what I had expected. Her character developed quickly and I liked how confident and ballsy she was. Trent turned out to be a lot more caring and dependable then I would have imagined.
Their journey was painful but the events that happen was the fate to bring them together. As the title indicates, whatever will be...will be. You can't stop destiny. It's a stark reminder that life isn't always fair, but you have to keep pushing forward.
I'm hoping we will see this couple again if Danny gets a book.
Trent and Gretchen haven't seen each other in years. The last time they saw each other, it is safe to say they were pretty much at rock bottom. Six years later Trent returns home to find that Gretchen's sister, Julia, has passed away. She is the mother of twins and he meets them and is quickly taken in by them. Gretchen turns her life upside down in order to step up for them. Her brother, Danny, who was also Trent's BFF, isn't so sure he wants to put his dream of a major league baseball career on the backburner. So Trent steps up and offers to help Gretchen and the girls out. Soon Trent discovers that Gretchen is everything he could want in a woman. I was kind of ho-hum about their relationship though. I didn't feel that spark between them. Gretchen was also kind of rigid so I didn't get the feeling she let loose at all. The whole issue with Liam was kind of unnecessary. The whole thing of taking the girls to the hospital was OTT and there was no need for it. The ending was okay.
Whatever Will Be is a fantastic standalone story in the Coming Home Series.
It's a story that'll pull on your heartstrings yet still manage to make you smile as you fall in love with some wonderful characters. It's a small town, brothers best friend romance that's packed with all the feels.
Trent Cassini and Gretchen Aaronson are dealing with a lot, tragedy brings them together and they don't have an easy time. They connect on a level neither one was expecting but they're willing to take a risk on each other as they discover some shocking revelations.
I loved Gretchen with her sassy smart mouth, how she surprised Trent at every corner made me laugh. Trent was every bit the broken bad boy, I absolutely loved everything about him, he melted my heart with the twins.
I loved them both and enjoyed their story.
I'm really hoping Cora has plans for a story about Danny sometime in the future....fingers crossed.
Gretchen Aaronson and Trent Cassini have known each other all their lives but never had any romantic feelings for each other. Trent is Gretchen's brothers best friend, who was sent away by his horrible brother Liam who lead to get rid of him. Trent suffers terribly in the place his is sent to, meanwhile Gretchen has her own demons to overcome when her father is sent to prison for murder. Gretchen's older sister Julianne is the one who keeps the family together but when she dies in a horrific accident leaving behind her 4 year old twin daughters Gretchen has to come home to take care of them. Trent meets up with her again at Juliannes funeral and both feel a connection.. The added bonus of the connection between Trent and the twins is heart warming and with lies,betrayal and hatred added to the mix this is a story that will stay with me for a while.
A brother's best friend story, but not really. Trent returns to his home town with an agenda. He wants to take back what his older half brother stole from him when he had him taken away in handcuffs in the middle of the night.
Gretchen returns to her home town when her older sister is killed and leaves 4 year old twin girls in the care of Gretchen and her brother Danny.
Even though he ignored her in high school, now he is very interested.
The story was pretty good, but some parts bothered me a bit. I didn't think it was appropriate to be hooking up at the sister's wake service, especially since they had no past history and basically just met. The dirty talk was a little weird for me too at the wake. If you take the wake and the death out of the story, it's all fine, it just felt a little off putting given the circumstances. Also, the twins didn't seem too bothered by the death of their only parent so that didn't feel to realistic.
Well Cora Brent ended 2021 with the best book of the year and now she's starting off the new years 2022 with another Best book of the year. Whatever Will Be is absolutely heartbreaking and compelling and has all the right feels that reach in and grab your heart and bring light back from the darkest times in the lives of the Aaronson family Gretchen and Danny and Jules twin daughters and Trent Cassini . The storyline is absolutely one that I didn't see coming from Cora and she did such a fantastic job with it and I had to use tissues a few times, but like I said when we think of the darkest times of our lives there is always light in the end . Congratulations Cora Brent you truly are one of the best authors I know and who truly writes from the depth of your heart to bring us such powerful and meaningful stories that reach our hearts.
Whatever Will Be by Cora Brent is book one in the Coming Home series, a series of books all written by a different author, and what a perfect start!!
They say you can't go home and Trent doesn't necessarily want to be back in his hometown but he has some vengeance planned. What he doesn't expect is to come face to face with his best friend’s younger sister. He also doesn't expect to be so attracted to her. She's going through her own tragedy and major life changes but soon realizes it's nice having someone there for her. I loved these two together!! They had me laughing at their witty banter and shedding a tear or two as they shared their pain.
Cora Brent is the queen of writing characters that are a bit broken, have family dysfunction but love hard!
This was a great story that I could not get enough of despite the rollercoaster of a journey that I went on through it.
Brought back by tragedy and placed into the new caretaker role, Gretchen returns to the small town of her youth to care for her nieces. What she did not expect was the return of Trent - her brother's friend as well. Where both come from troubled upbringings, they have returned from different reasons.
This story was well written and there were a few twists that I did not see coming. The chemistry between Gretchen and Trent was off the charts and I enjoyed the banter between the characters. In the end, this rollercoaster of an emotional journey was off the charts and I would recommend it to others.
Cora is the QUEEN of writing characters that are a bit broken and family dysfunction. Whatever Will Be is no exception. Trent and Gretchen both return home but for different reasons. What they didn't expect was to find their greatest love in the form of an old next door neighbor.
The book was filled with moments of tragedy, great sorrow but also moments of banter, love and romance between Gretchen and Trent. I have to say though the true stars of the story are Cait and Mara. You can't help but fall in love with them and root for them as a family. They managed to rise from the ashes of all their loss and begin to build this beautiful life for them and the girls.
Wow what a book.
Just finished this not 10 minutes ago
After a deep breath tears in my eyes and a gulp of now cold coffee I can start this review.
I went in blind with this and have not been able to put it down.
Gretchen and Trentcassini both back home ,both for two different reasons.
Both having left their homes after life changing situations the two are back
With neither of the two expecting it they are both pulled together and lean on each other also with the help of two little girls
Absolutely loved this , throughout reading I had a lump in my throat and a smile on my face
Beautiful believable characters that leave you feeling you actually know them.
all the love for trentcassini
I liked this story and characters—though they both had rough childhoods, Trent ended up being a caring, swoon worthy man, and Gretchen loved hard and wasn’t shy about going after what she wanted.
While I’m a big fan of Cora Brent, I’m not a big fan of insta-love and I do feel like that’s what happened between Trent and Gretchen. This is one book that would have benefited from a few more words describing the path to love for the main characters. I’m still glad I read it and will take a look at the other books in this Coming Home series, and I’ll always read what Cora Brent writes next!
